Back when fall damage killed mario. Glad to see his legs improved over the years. Now he can jump off the top of a city hall tower and land on his feet.

Let's hope they don't bring back fall damage for a third time. Kinda sucks when you're known as "Jump Man" for outrageous jump height and can be hurt by it.
I got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas when I was 5, my first proper exposure to video games, and it was mind-blowing, but then my dad told me stories about how games used to be 2D, and what the original game with Mario in it was like. It equally blew my mind that games used to be "flat" before I was born, and I made a genuine effort to seek them out through arcades and playing the NES and SNES at other kids' houses. Finding a Donkey Kong cabinet for the first time felt like completing a religious pilgrimage.
Same thing with computers. I never liked computers until I turned 14. *WHERE ARE THEY NOW?* Mario: Moves from New Donk City to the Mushroom Kingdom, and protects it from Bowser. However, he will gladly invite Bowser (as well as the current Donkey Kong) to go racing or play sports with him after defeating him. Donkey Kong, Sr.: Moves from New Donk City to a jungle where he fought in the Great Ape War against King K. Rool and the Kremlings, and marries Wrinkly Kong (sadly, she later passed away, but returns as a friendly ghost). Now mentors the current Donkey Kong and his sidekick Diddy Kong while reminiscing about the good old days, but will take part in combat if needed (especially when facing off against the Snowmads). Pauline: After breaking up with Mario, she becomes the mayor of New Donk City.
Slight correction: The American version has all four levels; they are simply introduced incrementally. The first time through you do indeed do play just the first and fourth levels. But on the second loop, the elevator stage is introduced as the second level and the pie factory on the third loop as the second level. So it's barrels, rivets, barrels, elevators, rivets- and then finally- barrels, pies, elevators, rivets with all four repeating in that order until you reach the "kill" screen. (The NES version omitted the pie level altogether.)
@@vulcanraven9701 There's an overflow error. Every time you play through a sequence the game adds four more seconds for each level. Eventually the game reaches 256 seconds which is the highest number you can store in a 8 bit circuit (256 is 2 to the 8th power). The next time through, the game tries to add four seconds which just causes the counter to roll back around to four (like the odometer in your car). Since you can't complete the level in four seconds you will lose all your lives. In video games, this is called a kill screen. This same error is not exclusive to Donkey Kong. At level 256 in Dig Dug, all the enemies spawn to the middle of the screen which is also Dig Dug's starting point and so you instantly die. At level 256 in Pac-Man, it runs out of fruit items to draw on the bottom of the screen so it fills the right side with garbage and not enough dots.)
The US set on mame has all the screens. It just goes barrel, rivet, barrel, elevator, rivet, barrel, pie factory, elevator, rivet. Then repaeats. till the 22nd kills screen.
That's how the original US arcade works. Uploader was wrong about the description and has obviously never made it more than a couple of minutes into the game
Just to let you know how much Mario has changed: Was a carpenter back then and didn't love Princess Toadstool Peach but instead Pauline, was a normal human who would get hurt if falls on the ground from height, didn't have mushrooms that contain superpowers, was a cruel man because he kidnapped Donkey Kong and whipped him, his son Donkey Kong Junior managed to save him from Mario's cruelty. Man Mario has changed alot.
There was a very similar game I used to play on the BBC Micro in the mid 1980s when I was about 5 or 6 years old called Killer Gorilla. There were two versions and we had them both. One version, when you had the hammer you couldn't climb the ladders and only jump normally. On the other version, there was a screen just before the main title screen where you could choose the amount of lives you have. Also on this version you could climb the ladders with the hammer in your hand and you could do an extended jump. The extended jump was when you pressed the "jump" key (return) at the same time as the "up" key (star) and you stay longer in the air. This jump made the third level a hell of a lot easier. You could get from the left side of the screen to the right side with only 2 jumps. I miss those days. I like reminiscing.
I'll never forget my first time playing this at a Holiday Inn somewhere when my family was on vacation back when this game first came out. I was immediately obsessed with it.
I am 32 years old. I have been familiar with the "how high can you get" screen for more than half my life, but it wasn't until just now that I noticed that those words could be misunderstood as a drug reference. Maybe it's a reference to the fact that this was Mario's last sober day before he started taking shrooms and seeing flying turtles and shit.

The video that got me into retro gaming. Thank you.
Very entertaining. makes me wanna play it now
+OG Matty_ Ice The NES version looks the best. But the N64 version has all 4 levels plus the cut scenes.
It would be pretty interesting to see Mario in the flesh again, especially on the VG video game TV screen.
Today's kids will never know the fun of this game and the fun times overall. My the world has change
jonesynahmeen, You are so right, kids these days can't even get pass the 1st stage of level 1.
Hey, I'm barely 18 and I mostly play old games like this (even much more obscure stuff than that). All hope is not lost! ^^
jonesynahmeen Even though I have had experience with many kids who have played this game before, but whatever, fuck them right?
jonesynahmeen Im 13 I passed the game in a original Arcade
Well i’m 13 and i still love this
The release date of this game is closer to the end of WW2 than today.
*WHERE ARE THEY NOW?*
Mario: Moves from New Donk City to the Mushroom Kingdom, and protects it from Bowser.
After this game: I don’t think we will see anymore of this character in future games

Kill screen?
@@pigs18 I see.. that makes sense. They should have just made the game end tbh. Thanks for the explanation btw
@@vulcanraven9701 In their defense, they had no idea anyone would make it that far. And if they did, hey, they got their twenty-five cents' worth.

The US set on mame has all the screens. It just goes barrel, rivet, barrel, elevator, rivet, barrel, pie factory, elevator, rivet. Then repaeats. till the 22nd kills screen.
Dougal Skanes yep that's exactly how it was in the actual arcade when I played it
That's how the original US arcade works. Uploader was wrong about the description and has obviously never made it more than a couple of minutes into the game
That's how u beat Donkey Kong
THANK YOU PIXELS!!!
I had never noticed it back then-I was just a kid playing video games-but the music that accompanies Mario is "Teddy Bear" by Elvis Presley.
Do disappointing that the second stage is missing from most releases! Thanks for posting!
I can't believe that none of the home versions had level 2. It was even missing on Donkey Kong Classics.
Donkey kong for dos had it.
If you wanted to play it on a console you'd have to play donkey kong 64
I remember playing this game from donkey kong 64, I just wanted to break my controller from the times I died lol
Sam Brennan: donkey Kong
Will Cooper: one game you sucked at
Sam Brenner: yeah
Just to let you know how much Mario has changed: Was a carpenter back then and didn't love Princess Toadstool Peach but instead Pauline, was a normal human who would get hurt if falls on the ground from height, didn't have mushrooms that contain superpowers, was a cruel man because he kidnapped Donkey Kong and whipped him, his son Donkey Kong Junior managed to save him from Mario's cruelty. Man Mario has changed alot.
You do a EXCELLENT job of playing donkey kong. I LOVED THE SONG THAT WAS MADE BOUT CALLED
"DO THE DONKEY KONG!!"
I love the sound of the final count down warning. I want it for my car alarm.
My dad told me that he's beat this game before. He did better than me.

I hate the first level.
Maybe because your dad grew up in the 80's and play it in the 80's.
Same.
0:06 I kinda like that theme

Correct.
I didn't think I'd ever need Mario Bros when this came out. How quickly the turn tables...
Happy 43rd Anniversary to the game Donkey Kong as well as Happy 43rd Anniversary Donkey Kong, Pauline and Mario! :)
I remember in 1980. Best game ever!
This was the best game ever when i was a kid you have to idment
1982 the best year

Sigh.... there's always that one idiot... -_-
I am 32 years old.
In the movie PIXELS when Donkey Kong went upside down, why is it Game Over?

Mario: I'm-a think I'm-a can-a handle a big-a fat-a monkey.
Donkey Kong: There were three errors in that statement!
Remember playing this game at my aunts on her arcade 😢
I'm having a panic attack watching and hearing these great sounds of my youth as I was addicted to this game at the arcade I would go to the mall with a quarter just to play one game 🤓
Funny how in this classic game if Jump Man(a.k.a. Mario) misses a ledge he dies but in the original NES game....you could fall from the same height and live, huh??
I made a Donkey Kong level in Super Mario Maker 2 :D
