Disagreeing a bit on the "just buy cheap bits" part. I used to do that and always ran out of the common use ones, they lasted maybe 20 screws then they were done. Since upgrading for a high quality set I didn't have to hunt for bits anymore.
This is all nothing new to me, but I watched the whole thing anyway. That's how much I enjoy Steve's videos.
I work construction, and I will say spending a bit more on Driver bits can make a difference. Cheap bits are made of cheap steel, and if you are putting in 50 or 100 screws a day, the cheap steel will bee6
"drilling holes is boring" wait, was that a bore pun? we merely adopted dad jokes, this guy was born in them
I rarely comment on videos but felt the need to do so here. I've watched several of your videos and stopped two minutes in on this one to comment and subscribe to your channel. You cover each step and do a great job explaining why you're using the tool and how to properly work each step. Other videos, they just jump right in and don't do nearly as good as you do explaining. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Update to this, Ryobi has drill bits specifically for the impact driver. I just finished building a table... Without a level, cause I lost it, then found it. I think it's level.
I used to work with my dad as a carpenter and the impact driver was amazing back then. literally it made life easy.
I would just like to say that you said that you cant drill holes with an impact driver due to the type of chuck it has. There is a large assortment of drill bits out there with hex shanks on them and are rated for use in an impact driver. Also if you look at specs on most tools (either in a catalogue or online) it will say what its max hole size is in wood and metal. Its also there for impacts. Im an electrician, i dont own a drill, only and impact and a sds drill and so far ive not came to a job i couldnt do.
Note to self - get an impact driver.
Hi Steve. In ALL of woodworking channels in youtube, I think you are the most...MICROJIG, maker of the gripper. Work Safer. Work smarter.... I hope you continue that way. Thanks for sharing!
Steve your videos are a Godsend. One may think "oh I can just Google that." But they're totally missing out on the logic and explanation you so completely provide. Any of my friends interested in starting woodworking, with no hesitation, I direct to your channel.
watched this a couple months ago -> bought impact driver, drill driver kits earlier this week -> just watched it again today, on a Friday night
I literally was thinking about buying another drill, because my black and decker sucks compared to my ryobi, and I need to to avoid constantly switching between drill bits and driver bits. Lo and behold, my ryobi kit came with an impact driver. I always assumed it was only for more powerful difficult to drive things. I had no idea you could use it for basic screws. Now I don't need another drill!!! You saved me time and money!
I get it now, an impact driver isn't just a handicapped power drill :)
The advice to use tape on the drill bit to know when to stop is enough for me to subscribe. I feel like I could've come up with this, but I didn't. Thank you very much for the video, extremely helpful educational.
Great video. I am not a wood worker, but my Dad was, as a hobby, when he was alive. If he were here today I know he would have really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.
Steve, if you haven't done so already I suggest you approach stores like Home Depot or Menards or possibly a marketing firm and offer your videos for in-store display either with small screens mounted in various departments or possibly a QR Reader sign linking a customer's smart phone to a video link for various departments like paint, sand paper, drill bits, screws etc. A while back I saw your video on staining and thought this could really help save someone from having to make ten trips to the store because you suggest all the things one might need for successful staining, thus they can be reminded of all the things they might need or remember they have before heading home and having to come back.
I have been using drills and impacts for decades but I still watched the video just to see the microjig placement lol, but your videos are so interesting to watch I stuck around for the whole 14 minutes.
I completely agree with Steve on the impact driver. I've used nothing but a drill for years but about 2 years ago I picked up the same Ryobi impact driver and cant imagine life without it now. If you have to save $$ to get it. Do it. It's worth every penny!
