I would take that old school Toyota over that new one all day
foolish
@@user-do9ir8lv2myeah having preferences is just dumb, I can't stand practical people. Like why not waste your money on things you don't need?
Agreed. I owned that exact truck and put 300K miles on it in 11 years with no problems. I dont know why the guy says it's slow. Perhaps his bigger tires. Mine was plenty fast and I hit 80 with ease. I have couple of friends with the new turbo hamster wheel v6 Tundra and they have all had major turbo, engine and tranny issues. One guy's plastic seat frame cracked the day he bought it. Something has gone wrong at Toyota.
The only thing that I would prefer is the 4cylinder over the 3.0 V6 (3 point slow)
I really wish I was able to get a 1991 4-cylinder 4x4 regular cab basic with A/C.
Haha that headgasket gonna blow
So nice. THIS is how they should make trucks, and cars, even today. Simple, mechanical, reliable, and probably much more affordable. Would much rather have one of these than the rolling computers they make these days.
Which one has more recalls?
I'm sorry but the 3.0 V6 is well known for headgasket failures. No matter how many times it's fixed it happens again. Design flaw
Reliable? The 4 cylinder yes. The V6, no lol
I bought a new 1991 Toyota SR5 Xtra cab 4x4 loaded air, sun roof , bucket seats, consul, full power options, 5 speed, big wheels and tires and a four speaker stereo with CD player a big deal in 1991. She was light steel blue with factory stripes and I loved that truck. If I could I would go back in time and buy one and bring it back for today. What a great truck.
Please TFL, more videos like this! Thank you.
I own a 98 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4WD 3.4 V6 5 speed. I've owned it for 6 years and currently has 157k miles. Dont think I'll ever sell it. Its a desert truck so no rust but faded paint.
Yep, I drove 1st gen Tacomas for 13 years.
JUST KEEP IT. COMING FROM A BIG TOY FAN WHO LOVES OLDER MODELS. MY 21 TACO CAME OUT OF THE FACTORY WITHOUT A HEATER HOSE CLAMP!
I love love love it. I had a 1994 4x4 Xtra cab 3.0L V6 5-speed manual just like this one except mine was green and it was the base model. I bought it brand new and I drove it for 300,000 miles before I sold it and immediately had seller's remorse. My rear bumper suffered the same fate and was rear ended twice. Rust started to develop right after that just like this one. I also had the bed liner. I so miss that truck. It was slow and noisy but it never left me stranded and I never got stuck. I'm in NJ and in the winter months I drive it up to Vermont very weekend to our ski house. I've even helped pull other 4x4s out of trouble with it. I've also taken it on multiple trips to Ontario, Canada and helped move my wife down from there. I was able to do a lot of the work on the truck myself because it was so simple and easy. I changed the shocks, plugs and wires, timing rotor and points (back in the distributor cap days), oil changes, etc. I've been looking to buy one around me but no luck yet. I'm disappointed that I didn't take many pictures of it. The only picture I have of me with the truck is in Cannondale's 1999 catalogue with me on my bike leaning on the truck. Yup, I'm a mountain biker also and I still ride. 🛻
I just quickly googled the 1999 calendar, is that you in the yellow shirt? Red bike? Nice truck.👍
@@kw8757 Indeed that's me if you mean the catalogue unless they also had a calendar I'm not aware of.
@@tmwei396 I just googled Cannondale Catalog 1999 and scrolled through all the pictures, there can’t be many pictures of cyclists standing next to their pride and joy with their mountain bike. The internet is pretty amazing isn’t it?
I’ve got a 2013 Land Cruiser known as a J150 here in the UK, Prado everywhere else, and I love it.
Headlight upgrades are a must on old trucks if you’re actually going to drive it
I don't like the ones that look modern though, those lights look SO out of place on that truck, they look terrible.
There are LED upgrades that mimic the look of sealed beams.
I drove just fine in throughout the 90’s with halogen lights. People are just becoming too soft nowadays.
@@CarnutMM yeah I agree. It’s super manly to not be able to see where you’re going 👍🏻
Those Nokian outpost tires are really good tires.
1984-1988 are my personal favorite....
BTTF 👍
2005-2015 is it for me, especially with the now legendary 1GR-FE engine. As long as the frame hasn't rusted out. Otherwise I'd go with the 2004-2006 Tundra.
@@damilolaakanni
They are ok. The VK56 engines are way more reliable tho. It's the best motor Japan has ever made and it shows. Nissan didn't change a thing for that motor in 20 years!! Toyota changed all the time!!
I had a 1984 4x4 with locking hubs and straight axle in the blue with silver stripes. Paid 14,000 brand new
Mine 79- 83 love the round headlights
Let's not forget that those 3.0 V6 engines had a recall on them. All the head gaskets were blowing out cause the rear exhaust manifold was creating too much heat. Plus no power. I remember the recall was in place for years.
Yup super junk if it hadn’t been for the 22r they would have gotten the reputation they got that’s for sure
Awesome video! That was the last time Toyota made a small pickup that appealed to me. I have a 1994 SR5 xtracab with the long bed. 4x4 with a manual transmission. Been my wood hauler since 1998. Never an issue.
Love it!!! The 1994 is a far more superior pickup truck than the 2024 is.
lmao not even close
Until you are in an accident. I worked that job for 30 years. Those older cars were death traps compared to today’s cars. We would run a fatal 2-3 times a month in the early 90’s. Last year it was 3 the entire year.
@@user-vx7vi3vq1c Of course new vehicules are way safer, 30 years of technology is separating those two trucks. But they do not have to be that big either!
Way to go kase ps your doing tremendous. Thanks for all the work your doing. You stepping up has not gone unnoticed by me ❤
I had a 1996 Toyota T100 SR5 great pickup.
Very cool truck. Tkanx, Kase!
My dad's 1977 Toyota truck (22R engine?) was $3775. I still have the original window sticker, tailgate and shift knob.
Still running my 89 sr5 dlx 2wd with the v6 that we bought new and it just keeps going.
Fantastic video! That order at Tacoma looks terrific.
I had that exact truck (color and all) when I moved to CO in 95.
I miss narrow body trucks and vent windows
In 10 years that new truck will just be an old truck, but that 94 will still be cool and probably worth more.
Also the 94 can be fixed in a driveway instead of a shop.
I shudder to think of the cost to replace the 1 screen dash instead of just a new gauge on the old one.
I'm not one to comment corrections 🤣but actually the pickups had solid front axles up to '87 year model I believe.
Before I snagged my 80 series, I bought one of these in '93 year model in the Springs in 2017. White with blue stripe package, deluxe, regrettably a manual-swapped original automatic with new KO2's.. The deluxe also came with a factory 2" lift. And the 3-spoke steering wheel up to '93.
Mine had 156kmi also but was immaculate. All the way down to the factory paper barcode label on the bed just behind the license plate. It was perfectly legible and looked like it was affixed yesterday.
Ended up selling it (before the price boom :(() as it was entirely too nice to do to it what I had planned. Entre' the 80 series. Miss that truck tho. It was amazing.
I'd take my '93 or that '94 all day long over a new one. 👍
What an Awesome look back.... A lot to admire there and a look into how we got here..... progress... for better or worse...This isnt about judging...
What a great truck! My friend had a ‘95 Nissan that was a lot like this. It was 4wd/5-speed/4 cyl. Manual hubs. It was awesome off road!
I wish I was able to rebuild my Dad’s 1995.5 Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4 V6 all manual like this.
Yes trucks get into shows. And this would most definitely qualify and would place as long as it’s kept as stock as possible.
I like that it has the wing windows.
A University of Houston shoutout!!! Go Coogs!!!
Miss my 89 SR5
had a 1992
Awesome truck excellent shape
That’s incredible
Are those the correct rear shocks? looks like they are almost all the way compressed at ride height.
How cool the seats is just like a 2nd row seats.
Old school goes with cool 😎
So funny how you guys talk about how slow this truck is and not wanting to go over 75. I had a couple of those trucks and they have no problem doing 110 mph on the highway.
Yeah it's not THAT slow. Compared to a new one, yes... But the V6 is perfectly capable of getting you a speeding ticket.
I remember pegging the needle to the steering column in a 4 banger Nissan hardbody, probably got it to 105 judging by how long the needle was pegged after I let off... Took a while to get there, but it did it.
I’m sure the Colorado elevation plays a factor. But it’s definitely got enough to get you where you want to be.
I would rather have the Old Red one. Had a couple like it. We have a 1st gen 4 runner now and it's more reliable than my 2010 F-150 so far.
The Toyota Tacoma is the most powerful Tacoma of all Tacomas
That truck is r134a (says it on the hood) so getting the ac serviced shouldn't be an issue
Really clean truck, great survivor.
Over 150k gotta full service the cooling system and timing chain to prevent issues.
That is a Toyota “Truck 4x4 DX.” Not an SR5 trim level as the guy states. Toyota US simply called this the “Truck.” The Tacoma name was introduced for the new generation that came out for 1995.5.
The 4Runner then as now shares the same interior. The V6 was no power and horrible gas mileage also they were prone to head gasket problems. Toyota would fix them even after the warranty expired as long as you had documentation of maintenance. The 3.4 V6 introduced in 1996 was much better motor.
1988-93 3.0 was not that good
My Dad’s 4x4 Tacoma and my 4x2 Tacoma were both listed as 1995 models.
Dear Toyota bring back the 1989 to 1994 Puck-up!!!!
I wish Toyota would go back to simpler trucks like this one. My daily driver is a 2000 4Runner with 255K miles and I will keep it on the road until I die before I buy a new vehicle.
The old taco were great for a small simple truck. Great for going to lowes and picking up charcoal, mulch, or any other basic homeowners needs. Downside is if you towed anything more than a jetski blue haired old ladies driving ford escorts or dodge omni would give you the finger and blow your doors off at 35mph.
Another bummer is guy probably paid more than sticker of when vehicle was new originally. Inflation is a beach.
Nice 😊
I have a 2016 crew cab and 6 ft bed... Knock on wood I have had no major issues... Like I hear many 2016 have reported.
I have a 1995 toyota pick up. Manual. Lifted 4wd. Always get offers. I wonder how much I can get for it
Just google it. Depending on condition, prices can be surprising. A truck like this guy has can fetch $20k+.
Halogens on a 94 Toyota truck, yeah sure, Kudo's to the original owner if that's the original frame. Cool truck.
oh oh oh oh what a feeling...............TOYOTA.
How I've personally changed in 30 years: I now identify as a desirable classic.
Love this gen of tacoma/hilux but prefer the generation before this with the SFA and square wheel arches.
“Simple gauge cluster”… a simple gauge cluster is a screen like they have today that somehow they charge more for…
The HILUX I wish my father could buy back in the day: a V6 Hilux !
I miss small trucks, there is a version the dodge light truck from this era in my complex just sitting slowly rotting it is such a waste. I would love this Toyota far more but it is still a waste. I still wish we would get back light trucks they are so useful for weekend warriors.
Early Tacoma trucks looked like.... the Hilux.
This isn’t a Tacoma, it doesn’t say Tacoma on it anywhere it’s just a Toyota pickup truck
The first Tacoma came out in 1995-1/2, different frame, different engines, they made this style in 1995 for half the year and the second half the Tacoma came out. I had a 1990 single cab 4wd Toyota pickup with the 22RE and then in 1999 I bought a brand new Tacoma single cab sport 4wd 2.7 4 cylinder, both trucks were 5 speed manuals with lock in n out front hubs.
Your comparing the orginal Hylux to three Tacoma, the two platforms will share a similar platform when the 2026 Hylux is reviewed after 20 years of divergence
toyota had to widen the body to keep up with the size of Americans 😂
I bought a new V6 auto Tacoma back in 93. Was such a great truck. Would go through just about anything. I miss those simple machines...
I'll take it....
I kinda prefer the old one.
When Toyota first came out with the 3.0v6 it was a junk didn’t stay around long then the 3.4 wasn’t much better in my book but then then the 4.0 one of the best engines yota made minus gas mileage 😂 ! Oh yota first turbo 4 banger was in 85 or 86 guess I could have googled to be sure
One thing has stayed the same… big guys don’t fit in them. I’m 6ft 4in and could never drive one.
I’m 6’4 and I can drive them
@@flight2k5enjoy! If one didn’t know better, one would think humans are all built in different shapes and sizes.
@@Bum_Hip I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here.
I'd take the old one over the new one, and I'm sort of a Toyota Lexus fanboy.
Love those old Toyotas but let’s be honest…the new trucks are wayyyy more capable
Agree 👍
Everything about the older ones is better
Just look at the ground clearance forget what the numbers say .
Old school QDR vs new SHIT
And yea I’m a Toyota fan I’ve had 6 4Runners one Tacoma and a 5.7 tundra that I’m never getting rid of . Keeping my 2022 4Runner TRD off road forever as well .
TOYOTA will NOT get any more of my money until they go back to what separated them from domestic junk .
Jumping off my soap box now just highly disappointed in Toyota
love the older truck the newer tru k has too much plastic
Has changed very very much, PRICES
Nostalgia is great, but not very practical in real world application. The truck has no power and poor MPG. New Tacoma all day.
TELL THAT to ELOOOOON CYBERTRUCK.........30 YEARS.
On the surface, I'd rather have the old one built as new today. However, not all that glitters is gold. That 3.0L V6 wasn't a great engine. It's gutless and likes the blow the head gasket.
I’d rather have the 1994.
Thought it would be off roading
No more new trucks now I'll stay with the old ones new ones will never last as long as the old one
I'll take the NEW 24!! The old is fun but a daily would be painful !
They were sooo. Bad for so long. Tiny. Uncomfortable zero tech. Rust prone bodies. Anemic engines. No personality. Cardboard door panels. Worst radio ever in a truck no support in seats. Horrific driving position especially in reg cab.....i could go on.....but it was reliable...wow
The new Tacomas are big bubbly federal regulated crap
Funny thing is, ALL trucks have made quantum leaps in the last 30 years. If anything Toyota has always been the laggard when it comes to advancements.
That 94 Toyota will be around long after that new Toyota is in the junk yard.
Is that the same Tacoma that broke on it's test drive and had to have the entire front diff replaced? Toyota makes crap now. So sad.
22 tacoma is gutless. Why?
It’s also crazy how a new Tacoma even the trd off-road breaks transfer cases with light off-road even the tundra has issues stop talking so highly about tacomas and tundras the only versions that are reliable are before the body and engine change I even can provide a link to the video of proof it was recorded live on video during a review forget Toyota trucks if reliability and money is a concern lucky for me money is not a concern but I will be buying a Ferrari instead Toyota is officially shameful!!!!!!!
New one is better in every way
TOYOTA is NO Longer an OPTION for the Young Logical Working Man !
Any working man who is not completely incapable of math. Im a Union electrician for a municipality where we don't get laid off and there is plenty of ot. The only new vehicles showing up are Camry hybrids Kias and Hyundais and a few Maverick xls. Used to be nothing but trucks of all sizes.
😂😂😂
