Dimebag was the guitarist and he was one of the best to do it. 5 Minutes Alone and Domination are both great songs by them. They helped originate the genre of groove metal. Thrash dominated metal in the 80s and Pantera was one of the catalysts that changed metal in the 90s and 2000s.

  • @Billinois78

Fun fact: In about 1989, a year before Pantera put out their first official album (1st on a major label) Dimebag Darrell was asked by Dave Mustaine to join Megadeth as new guitarist. I understand his response was "Well cool, man! As long as my brother can be the drummer". Unfortunately, or maybe not, Dave had already hired new drummer Nick Menza at this point, so Dime stayed with brother Vinny Paul in Pantera.
If you do a couple of other noteable songs for Dimebag's solos, Floods by Pantera, and Inside Out by Anthrax. That solo is insane.
    Cheers

This is sort of Pantera's version of a "radio friendly" song, their most popular song and MTV hit. Geat song still, but not near my top songs by them. "Hollow' is anothr great one from this album, in the same vein as "Cemetary Gates". "Revolution is My Name", "Floods".

Alright, Dime Bag Darryl and those heavy riffs. I saw them open for Black Sabbath in 1998 in Boston Garden and they were great. Both bands were awesome that night as Sabbath was doing a reunion tour with Ozzy and Bill Ward both back in the band. Killer show. Nice reaction. Hope to hear more UFO and their brand of great hard rock. Rock On! 😎

I had the privilege of playing in a band that opened for Pantera back in '85 and '86 when they were still considered to be a "glam" metal band. They were actually quite heavy even then, and they used to do the best cover of Metallica's "Seek and Destroy" during their live sets. Both Darrell and Vinnie were the nicest guys in the band, and they treated us great. When we first opened for them, I had never seen them before. After our opening set, I watched them play, and I was blown away by their sound and Darrell's over-the-top guitar playing. I had no doubt that these guys were going to eventually become very successful.
Nick and Lex, if you've read this comment this far, I'd like to request the instrumental funk track, Power, by Marcus Miller. I think you'll appreciate his musicality on the bass.

Hey Eric, great story! I had always heard that the brothers were super nice guys (never got to see Pantera sadly).
Out of curiosity, what was your band and any recordings?

    • @integraleric
      @integraleric 3 года назад +2

@@mvunit3 The name of the band was Prisoner. I was the third and last drummer they had during the 80's. We had roughly an album's worth of studio recordings, but nothing ever came of them. We had released some vinyl 45's of some of the tracks. I left the band shortly after we opened for Pantera for the last time at a place called the Stardust Theater in Sherman, TX near the end of January, 1986.
By the time I caught up with the guitar player a year and a half later, the band was history. I ran into him again in Deep Ellum in Dallas at a club roughly 14 years later. He had a new band and had rewritten some of the old Prisoner songs to sound more contemporary.
I connected with him again in 2010 and discovered that he was performing in comedian Alex Reymundo’s comedy act. You can see him here in this video at the .10 mark (ruclips.net/video/xtTGn-QFBIg/видео.html). He’s the dude with the beard and cowboy hat jamming with Alex Reymundo.
Thanks for asking, by the way 😊

@@integraleric - Wow! I'll have to checkout that link too!
I have had a few friends who had bands that recorded CD's, and opened for some pretty heavy hitters.
The one with the most longevity has been "Kragen Lum" of the Prog Metal/Thrash band Prototype, who went on tour with Exodus, when Gary Holt joined Slayer. He also has been part of "Heathen" for 3 albums. Prototype, if I'm not mistaken, was the _last_ band to open for Death, before they went to Europe. That is the show that was on VHS and DVD called; "Death: Live and Raw (at the Whiskey)". Prototype's Set is here at Yt called "Prototype - Live At The Whisky 1998", I'm at the front with 2 others - stage Right. One of the guys is Perry Grayson of "Destiny's End" and "Falcon".
Prototype have 3 albums, and _slowly_ working on their 4th.
Now that I'm writing and re-reading your story; It reminds me of these guys who were straight out of Highschool in the city of Claremont in SoCal, they called themselves "Lachesis", which I designed their logo.
They were a cross between UK's "Sabbat" and "Death", VERY technical Thrash/Death Metal, they just blew the doors off the 3 club shows they did . . . and then they dissolved, a couple of guys became engineers. They were all "smart" kids that went onto Universities back in the 90's.
I always wondered, "What If". They were amazing. And its funny that I got them _into_ that type of music, when they were kids hanging out at a Comic Store I worked at :p.

my pantera story comes from my dad.. my dad before i was born started dating my mom in '88. They met in Dallas and my dad was a huge rock fan like so many, Deep Purple was his personal favorite for what it meant to his childhood. Now Pantera was not huge in '88, in fact i dont think they started touring til '87 really. Early in the relationship my mom told my dad she wanted to go to see a group and my dad messed up the tickets and got the wrong dates or something. They went to The Basement in the summer of '88 dressed in decent clothes from work to see a group. TURNS OUT, IT WAS PANTERA. My dad is the type of person, he spent the money, he is staying. My mom is NOT a metal fan, my dad was a little, but who the hell is this group? He said they spent the entire concert right next to speakers stage right and to this day, the many concerts he has been to, that was the loudest and wildest concert he has ever seen. I think part of that was the mere shock of holy shit, what did i show up for, but he couldnt believe the energy just nonstop blasting of metal in his face, literally directly into his face. My mom didnt have a great time, but she never forgot it LOL
My dad has been a fan ever since. My dad, as well myself, does not hold back on audio. He hosted parties outside before i was born and I was raised with floor to ceiling jbl speakers in his office. 8 18" subs, 8 12" woofers and 8 3" tweeters, some stupid amount of racked crown amps all running through its own Fuse box separate from the house. When his large collection runs into Pantera, our house even as a little kid would just shake as he turned it up. Good times, holy shit they rock. This playing through 8 subs causes chest pains and you just feel your insides shaking, it isnt healthy but its an experience worth living.

Wow… you need to hear the entire album. The track immediately following this on the album is nothing like you described. It’s not a laid back groove Metal song in the least… it’s actually a fast paced Thrash song. Vulgar Display Of Power is now regarded as one of the quintessential Metal releases along side Master Of Puppets, Rust In Peace, and Powerslave. For sure Pantera are regarded as a Groove Metal band but, the last five albums of their career, including Cowboys From Hell, are solidly in the Thrash vein. I guess I’m shocked to hear Nick wasn’t familiar with this album or their later releases. They’re all worth checking out. The album Far Beyond Driven (1994) is actually my favorite album from them and it’s even heavier than what you heard here. Pantera really did push mainstream Metal into extremes no other band has since. You will find some very unsavory aspects on some songs here and there but the music was first and foremost always fun. It wasn’t just about mosh pits and brutality for no reason. You’ll even find some social commentary on a few songs. They weren’t the most refined band but they also certainly weren’t the blunt headed troglodytes they have the reputation of being. It was all image and how the media portrayed them. You should check out the title track to The Great Southern Trendkill. Find a lyric video of it if you can. That song really sums up what they thought about 90s trends and music.
    Great reaction video as always!

    - the album 'Loosen Up Naturally' and the songs 'Freedom' or 'Get High'.
Although 'Get High' has a gimmick it is a very interestingly constructed song that will satisfy what you are looking for.

@@wagstaff6135 - Yeah, I used to watch BangerTV and Lock Horns, and a few of us were VERY frustrated with bands they would leave out, or bands that were really important in certain genre's. Sam Dunn is an awesome director, but he says he's a Prog Metal fan, but he didn't really know Watchtower or Fates Warning (this included the Bass player for Between the Buried and Me), 2 of the most important bands starting Prog Metal (along with Queensryche), and the former "Math Metal". So they, using the genre title "Aggro" (short for _Aggressive_ ) would have been a small miracle :p. I believe I heard that term in a few trade mags back in the day, possibly at the Nuclear Blast website as well. It didn't last long as critics noticed that much of the music was in 4/4 - in-turn had a "groove". I'm sure I'd get corrected by someone who will yell at me with letters in all caps :P.
About the bands that were influenced by Jazz/Fusion . . .
Trying to look at some "essay's" I've written on my blog, unfortunately LOTS of video/tracks have been deleted and I have to replace them, and I'm living at a home that has low band-width, so I can't edit many of the links. So I'll have to get back to you about the music :(.
In the meantime, you may enjoy this Playlist of early "Technical Metal" with some of the bands I've mentioned (and the Progressive Rock & Fusion bands that inspired the future of Metal):

For me, the best Pantera was the odd stuff, the type of Metal that I was always into, angular, atypical, complex, HEAVY and stomping; "Primal Concrete Sledge", "The Art of Shredding", "By Devils Be Driven" (Mike Portnoy sampled the main riff which he played along with, within his Drum Solo), "Rise", "Fking Hostile", "A New Level", "Throes of Rejection", "Use my Third Arm", and my favorite track "Slaughtered" (this is a track that goes into the somewhat typical Pantera stomp, but then it takes a left-turn into violent chopping and complex riffage!). After this album, I figured; "How more Heavy could they get?" and I thought the next 2 albums were just a continuation of "Far Beyond Driven" (1994). I basically moved on to other bands, but I played these 3 albums (Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven) on a regular basis. They were go to album especially when I was pissed-off or in a bad mood, etc. VERY cathartic, and was always fun to play on Guitar and headbang to let out some steam.
Nick, you are soo right at 12:38 on. Pantera was pretty much up there with Metallica, and maybe the heavier choice for many.
    And then in 1995 . . .
    *Heavy as a Heavy thing.*
Again Nick (hint hint), as a Metal and Holdsworth fan, a reaction to; *Meshuggah* - "Future Breed Machine" would be awesome. Critics were comparing Meshuggah to Pantera for that particular album release, but personally, I think Meshuggah were 10 times heavier, and much more progressive, yet they were almost uncategorizable . . . Were they Death Metal, Prog/Tech-Thrash Metal, Aggro/Groove Metal, Math Metal, or all the above?
Two Swedish bands changing extreme genres in 95; Meshuggah with their 2nd album (along with 2 previous Ep's) "Destroy Erase Improve", and *Opeth* and their debut "Orchid". 2 bands along with many others I'd deeply get into. After 1995, a slew of complex bands of different extremes began to emerge to create new monsters of their own.
It was very sad to lose guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell in such a violent way. And then years later, his brother/drummer Vinnie Paul from dilated cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease :(.
I guess Darrell needed his big brother. Rest in Peace Bro's \m/.

Not to disparage Pantera, they're great; you mentioned jazz and metal, "43% Burnt" by The Dillenger Escape Plan, and "The lottery" by Exist are two examples of the jazziest that metal can get. The former is extremely technical hardcore, and the latter is more like brutal prog with jazz breakdowns. I'd request them officially through your BMC, but I always seem to miss the cut-off, and I'm otherwise usually poor. Still, I love your content. Thanks.

      Jazz and Metal . . .
The Death Metal version of Mahavishnu Orchestra; *Cynic* - "Focus" album. Even a lot of Death Metal fans back in 1993 didn't get them, they were VERY much ahead of their time. *Alarum* was another early band, as-well as *Aghora, Atheist* (2nd album "A Questionable Presence", and "Elements"), *Watchtower* and much later *Spiral Architect.* I could add many others :p.

Im a massive Pantera fan and Walk isnt one of my favourites. Its a bit too plodding and not enough happens. The solo and the outro pretty much redeems the song (they are the absolute masters of power groove btw) but there are LOADS of Pantera songs I know you will love... you just need to deep dive into all of the songs!
Also, Im not sure how much hatred there was between those bands at the time... Ive heard that Mustaine even wanted Dimebag to play for him in Megadeth, but Dimebag didn't wanna split from his bro Vinnie ;)
