  • Budget overland gear; Overlanding on a budget isn't as hard as you might think. I found tons of gear at even my local Harbor Freight. If you live somewhere where there aren't any overland or offroad shops nearby, maybe you can find the gear at your regular shops instead.
    Obviously I would say try to buy local when you can but if you can't there always other options.This is just one part of a series of videos where I go to local shops and try to find budget offroad and overlanding gear.

    Just wanted to say that I purchased seven different light bars from Amazon and tractor supply and lastly Harbor freight. The road shock light bars from Harbor freight are by far brighter than anything I had purchased. I was trying to stay under $150 budget so I didn’t go for the bigger brands and I am absolutely happy with the harbor freight lights.

    • @jakealcazar3805
      @jakealcazar3805 3 года назад +39

      That's because Overlanding isn't your traditional style camping. Hence why they came up with a separate term. Most Overlanding situations involve trailing down a 4x4 path to find a pretty good camping spot. Back in the days, people would just typically pull into predesignated campgrounds or just to the local lake to "camp". It wasn't as dispersed at it is now. It's a pretty balanced mixture of Off-Roading and "outback" style camping. That is why it is referred to as "Overlanding" taken from the traditions of Australian Off-Roading.

    Tip on the inexpensive cast iron. Take it home and if you have a hand held grinder with a flap wheel, take that too the inside of the pan and get it as smooth as you can before seasoning it, it will work much better. It can make your cheap cast iron perform like the more expensive stuff.

      Something that should be added, NEVER use any winch components that are not tested and approved by a trusted independent lab. Many things you can cheap out on, but something that could easily kill you or a bystander is not it. The winch is fine, no idea how reliable it will be in an emergency, but if it fails it won’t directly kill you. The synthetic line, snatch blocks, d-rings etc are definitely something you shouldn’t buy if they aren’t certified at those loads. No matter how beefy they look, the material used and treatment process can make the difference between 1,000lb rating and 10,000lb rating even with the same thickness.

It was too hot in GA in the day, so I weeded overnight. This thing was amazing and lasted a few nights in a row. And I'm talking like 6 hours in the dark doing this. I use (and like!) a pair of those small RoadShock 4-LED Flood lights (no side lights in them). Plenty bright and plenty wide coverage for me! (I don't do any racing.) When splayed slightly to harmonize with the headlights coverage, they make coverage plenty wide to include tight bends in the road.
    I have a modest 4WD daily driver with 2" lift & rear diff locker. I temporary-mount the lights to the roof using Harbor Freight's 95 Lbs magnets (need bolts, washers & nuts), with a nitrile glove under
    each magnet to protect the car paint. Outside the hood, I ziptie the wires to 60 Lb magnets (again with nitrile gloves underneath). Inside the hood, I ziptie the wires in place. Inside the cab, I ziptie the wires & switch in place.
    No drilling or roof rack required. Works great. Never had a problem and the lights never slide around on me. Terrain is mostly *very* bumpy forest roads in Arizona, plus some low-class rock crawling.

    To me the best thing for any situation is a come-along. I have gotten more more vehicles out of bed situation without having to use a winch. A come-along is cheap and you can use it anywhere. The othe important things are ropes and chains. Not to mention tools at harbor freight have the same warranty expensive brands do. Nice review. I have quite a few of the items you described. I advise against Harbor's duct tape. It is much weaker than 3M's or 'Gorilla' tape, easily delaminates (the thread fibers separate from the adhesive and backing) and has inferior adhesive. Another item that is TRASH is their battery tender. Between initial purchase and exchanges, I had 4. Every one was either non functional from the outset or failed within minutes. No, I did not reverse polarity or short them (although a decent tender has protection circuitry to tolerate such errors). I've owned both Deltrans and Yuasa battery tenders for many years (still do) but wanted to augment them with Harbor's for use on ATV batteries. I later bought another tender made by Deltrans.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I have personally only used their duct tape a few times and it’s been pretty meh. I will say that I have a battery tender for my Harley and ive had pretty good luck with it. That being said I don’t think that harbor freight stuff is bad I just think that QC from their suppliers isn’t always spot on. That’s how I can have a good working product and you can have some fail. That’s why I always hear so many mixed reviews if their stuff. It either works or it doesn’t. It’s not amazing if it does work, it just does the job. If it doesn’t work, at least they’ll replace it.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 3 года назад +1

      @@OXFOOT Thanks for the reply. Yes, they're pretty good on replacement PROVIDING IT"S VERY SOON AFTER THE PURCHASE.
      Most of the tools I've purchased have been reliable and a good value, although their price differential compared to Home Depot, Lowes, Napa, etc., has narrowed over the last year. I often will preferentially buy an American made product, especially after the CCP's increased international belligerence their initial concealment of Covid, and refusal to allow independent investigations into its origin. But it's sad to see that even traditional American brands now have their products made in China.
      As for their winches, I bought two 2500 lb winches for INDOOR use. Both work. But I belatedly (after warranty expiration) discovered that one has less than half the pulling power of the other. It works, but something is wrong with the internal coils/wiring

    I had to use it at my work one time. A Semi (with trailer) was jackknifed in a snow/ice storm and about to slide into a concrete wall in our lot. I hooked the front of my pickup to his front bumper and it took a couple tries but managed to drag him off the wall.

      Yeah hf isn't terrible unless ya buy battery tools but their newer ones seem to have gotten better..but corded tools are perfectly fine for an occasional use tool . daily use would be better to at least buy Ryobi or similar brands but they can be had refurbished off eBay for half cost. Hand tools I buy there a lot because they have lifetime warranty..who cares if it's a cheap tool it works .I've rarely broken a harbor freight tool .if you use em wrong no brand will survive.

    personally I prefer using reflective cord and glow in the dark stake caps and toggles that I got from amazon... but the glow in the dark cord is handy too.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад

      Reflective probably makes more sense if you walk around with a headlamp which I usually do. Maybe I’ll have to check that out. The glow in the dark chord isn’t super bright so you might be in to something.

    • @mattlewandowski73
      @mattlewandowski73 2 года назад

      The reflective line I have will pick up light from the camp fire, or a flashlight even with a red headlamp the reflective I use is noticeable even if the GITD is not.
      The biggest problem with glow in the dark is it has to soak up light to be able to glow (sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours depending on the product). How long depends on the quality of the GitD material used. If you are like me (or several outdoor channels I follow) it is not uncommon to roll/hike into camp just before sundown if not after. that does not give much time for the GITD material to build up a charge. It is not uncommon for GITW to be depleted in the middle of the night when you want to slip over to the latrine.
      I do still make use of GitD as mentioned above I have stake caps and toggles, I like to mark containers with GitW paint or tape (especially important ones like first aid kit which has a GitD first aid cross patch glued onto it.) and I have often had GitW tape rings around my fire extinguisher (a band on the bottom, and a band just below the shoulder of the cylinder) I used to have GitW paint on my old scuba gear for similar reason. the more ways you can make your stuff noticeable, the easier it is to spot in an emergency or the less likely you are to trip over it in the wee hours. I like to have both reflective and GitD on safety items as well.
      As I replace my camping gear it will again be getting GitD and Reflective treatment. Some reflective tape and GitD paint or tape on a new first aid kit, red reflective (harbor freight and amazon both have red/white reflective tape for trailers) on fire extinguishers. it is not a bad idea to mark easily lost items with reflective tape or reflective paracord. I presently have an iorange and black (harley colors) paracord key chain on my key fob, but since I have push button ignition, I tend to keep my keys attached to my belt at all times. I am still considering replacing the orange and black with orange and reflective (my tacoma is orange) if you have electric lanterns for camp it is not a band idea to mark the switch for your light with GitD (I used to have one with GitD paint around the switch bezel.)

    There’s a lot of uses for a chain that a strap isn’t good for. I live in the Pacific Northwest and everyone I know carries a big chain. Probably because that’s what is used when logging lol. Side note: besides duct tape a roll of bailing wire is essential in a lot of situations also a roll of #36 bank line comes in handy. Add a couple of heavy duty needles and you can stitch up just about anything with the bank line. Cheers

    I have that camp chair. I only use it around the garage and rarely fold it down so don't care about how thin it can't get. I move it constantly and toss it on a pile of stuff when I shut down for the night, etc. It is study and holds my 220 lb weight very solidly. I will warn anyone that putting a large drink or stuff on the table might tip over once you get out of the chair, but otherwise it has been excellent.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад

      Yeah it looks thin enough for something like that. Honestly for the average person it’s probably not even bad for camping. I have a hammock chair I use now that’s bigger but I like the comfort. The little table is probably more of a gimmick but I’d imagine it’s better to eat off of. Most of the time I make steaks at camp and I’d rather cut a steak on that little table rather than my lap.

    information notice:, the harbor freight winchs are second hand units made by smittibilt winchs !, the fairlead is ok, but for the money get a fairlead roller instead, the roller places the cable or rope back where it came from, the cover does not, !the lights are made from instalight, cheaper online. the straps are great when used doubling up, u shape. straight pull it will break, the strap state 20,000#, no have of that. remember , 20,000# is max strength, working load is always half.

  • @obiesunstreak2409

    On the lights, you got it wrong. The idea of "Ditch lights" is to flood the area closer to you and cover the sides so you can see to the right and left more. This is why they are mounted at an angle not pointing front. You want FLOOD not SPOT for this function. Rock lights are for lighting up next to your tire so you can get placement/line right.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад

      I have my ditch lights set up as flood lights but I also don’t have side shooting lenses on them. Mine are bajas and are great as a flood. The idea of the side shooting lenses is that it is a flood at that point because the light pattern shown on the box doesn’t include the side pods.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад

      Rock lights are for tire placement yes, but IF I got them I would use them for camp.

    • @obiesunstreak2409
      @obiesunstreak2409 3 года назад

      @@OXFOOT The side lights just don't throw enough light. Not for good wide angle view.
      At the end of it, you want your ditch lights to be flood, and your bar to be mounted high and be 'spot' to focus light in distances. This means you get 3 coverage points, up close (flood), main headlights (med), and light bar (distant)

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад

      I had a too light bar and absolutely hated it. In Colorado it’s too dusty for them. I have a bumper light bar because the top mounted light bar just usually illuminates dust and snow. I’m not a fan.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 года назад +1

      I have a buddy who runs the exact like for ditch and seems to think it lights up enough in the side pods. I don’t disagree that typically you would want a flood. I like the baja flood/spot combo personally.
