- The left-wing former president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has defeated far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the country's presidential election.
Lula won 50.9% of the votes after a campaign which saw two sides of the political spectrum go head to head.
The election represents a huge comeback for Lula, who could not run in the last presidential election in 2018 because he was in jail and banned from standing for office.
Lula spent 580 days in jail before his conviction was annulled and he returned to the political fray.

I'm Brazilian and Bolsonaro is not fascist. Lula supports Venezuela claiming that venezuela is a democracy, same with Nicaragua and African regimes. Lula has the support of the midia and "justice" 9 of 11 supreme court judges were appointed by Lula's Party and his Vice-president candidate party. Lula was judged in 3 of 4 instances, all 3 instances with career judges with no political appoitment and was convicted, but in supreme court 1 judge that was appointed by him and campaign for him annulled the entire criminal case, he was not declared innocent. All those politicians who supported Lula said years ago that Lula is a fascist and corrupt but now they $upport him. It's had to free a people that wants to be enslaved.

Well thank God the US president says the election in Brazil was credible! Until I heard that reassurance from an American I didn't know what to think. Good to know you don't need an Electoral College or Supreme Court decision to have fair elections.
The US election system is a little hard to we understand in Brazil, because it’s very different.
The Amazon is a unique world treasure.... and so the rest of the world viewed Bolsonaro's goals of 'developing' it with cynicism and trepidation. We've seen the end result. Some made lots of money developing our lands yes, but most didn't and much also was lost. And we live in places that perhaps, had less to lose.
Brazil has 32 political parties, 23 of which are represented in Congress and in order to govern effectively broad coalitions are required.
Lula, during his first and second terms as President mastered the art of broad coalitions and mostly governed from the Centre ground.
I can see no reason why he wouldn't do things any differently than he did before and, with a Centre Right vice President (and former political opponent), I can see no validity in comparisons with Argentina or other South American countries.
Admittedly, the economic outlook is quite different to when Lula was first President but his policies will inspire the confidence of the global markets and encourage, in particular, ESG investments, which in turn will give him some headroom to implement neo-liberal policies in Brazil, eliminating hunger and poverty in a Country that produces 8 times what it needs seems like a no-brainer to me.
For too long Brazil, under Bolsonaro, has embraced isolationist policies which has pushed international investment away to the detriment of Brazil's advancement.
Fortunately, Brazil have a democracy that is alive and well where the people get to decide who will be their President unlike in the UK where we get a seemingly endless succession of politicians being "selected" as Prime Minister being thrust upon us....

He didnt prove the allegations were wrong, one of the supreme court judges he appointed demanded the investigation to be closed due to "irregularities" in the process of his investigation. So he is not innocent at all, he just has a good friend in the supreme court.

You guys made it seem as if Lula was indeed sentenced for corruption, but didn't state that the judge who arrested him forget fake evidence of crimes right before the elections to take Lula out of the pool, then became Bolsonaro's minister of justice right afterwards. Lula was declared unguilty by the highest court, so he was basically a political prisoner somewhat like Madela. You also didn't mention that Bolsonaro used police blockades to hold people from voting in regions where Lula had major approval. Even though he bypassed the constitution, he lost!

This was not a "narrow victory". Lula beat Bolsanaro by 48.43% to 43.20% and again 50.9 to 49.1. Had this been an RCV election, Lula would never have had to go into a runoff race.
Bolsanaro lost twice and it was millions of votes apart each time.

I don't align politically with Lula, but there is no question he is the better man for the job. He distributed billions (yes, with a b) of reais to EACH state to buy respirators and whatever equipment was necessary, and vaccinated anyone who wished to take them at record speed. He didn't have a say on whether to do the lockdown or not. That right was taken from the supreme court and given to the governors and mayors. And most of them imposed the lockdown. Most of the governors also took the federal funding for corruption. So a lot of people died because the money was not invested in hospitals. So it's easy to blame the presidente when you don't take a closer look, or watch the BBC. I hope that's clear now.
I never doubted Lula's innocence or competence even for a second. It's a great relief for the brazilians who not only want their country to be once again respectable, but also want our country to feed our own people once again.
During the Labour Party's government, we essentially erradicated hunger, but now we have as many people going through food insecurity as the US, which is simply shameful.
Brazil produces enough food to feed 1.6 BILLION people- about 8 times its entire population- and yet we currently don't provide enough food for more than 33 million brazilians. The responsibility of this falls upon right wing politicians and the market.
