The unexpected moment led to intense speculation.

I was living in HK during President Hu’s tenure and I’ll say that he never forced HK into whatever it is right now. I always have respect for him. It’s quite a shock for me to see what has become of him. He looks like he aged 20 years in the past 5 years
It is both sickening and sad to see the direction China has been taking under Xi. There are other concerning authoritarian trends in the world, but Xi is now the scariest after watching russia’s slow collapse.

There is, if you will, something uniquely Chinese about this, even among the trend for dictatorial purges. Just like there may be some similarities between the concepts of "saving face" and "guanxi" between Chinese and other cultures, nevertheless, they are pivotal concepts in that particular culture. Because saving face is even more important than, say, in a culture which is less insistent on such appearances, an act of deliberate humiliation speaks volumes. Yes, power relations have always existed among humans but Hu wasn't exactly clubbed over the head; he was treated as though he had no status and the public should be made aware that he was shown to be discarded as though his presence was beyond meaningless. This is fairly mild as far as The Purge goes, but it's very specific power play in a country that has its own power plays stretching back thousands of years to the Warring States period and Qin Shihuang. Not everyone would choose to display their contempt for a previous ruler in quite this way. Just saying.

There are other ways to remove someone from their position. This was a deliberate public humiliation to communicate total control.

But the phenomenon now exists in all news media, advertising and bloggers' Vlog/Live, isn't it? I mean, BBC is definitely a good case study of how music, images, color, and voice tone can be used to influence the audience's "feelings ."
We learned something about lens language in our media language class, but you know, textbooks and professors sometimes lack real-world examples... and the BBC complements this well.
They mentioned Hu wasn't feeling well. Is it possible he has dementia? He looked rather confused multiple times during the clip as if he didn't know exactly what was going on. Also the guide holding his him up and leading the way tells me Hu isn't in great health and may not be of 100% sound mind at the moment.

3:24 you cut off one of the most important sections of Hu Jintao's reaction to Xi and Li.
1. Hu talks to Xi, and Xi nods his head saying "hao hao=yes, okay", that means there was a deal, and Xi pretends to agree; and then
2. Hu taps on Li's shoulder in a concern and deep love, whatever you interpret into that direction. Hu supports Li, communist youth league.
*There are 2 major groups of Chinese Communist Party:
*One is like Xi whose father is the founder of the party who fought and founded PRC, thinks he owns the whole country. This group of the people are the 2nd generation and offspring of CCP founders who have the government official's jobs because of their relationship, not because of their talent. Mao's grandson is also in this scenario.
*The other group of people are the ordinary citizens who have no strong background and were permitted to the party because of their talent.
**One group, like Xi, think they are orthodoxy, have power with no talent to run the country, and the other group have ability, higher education, open-minded and humanity . Hu wants the balance to run the country, yet Xi wants everybody listening to his order. We all know it's The Emperor's New Clothes. Like Putin, surrounds with no truth voice and makes wrong judgement and decision, very dangerous.

You forget Toad and his gang. Xi was supposed to be on the side of the Communist Youth League. He pretended to play along to get Hu’s support. Now, there are 3 factions in CCP. Toad’s, Xi’s and Hu’s. But I think Hu’s gang is being eliminated.
The open minded faction you are talking about are the more liberal minded elements of the CCP, who also have strong inclinations towards the US. Xi is purging the ranks of the pro US elements and establishing a goverment for a ramp up in the confrontation with America. Xi represents the more nationalistic elements of the CCP who are wanting to step up their game in the international arena beginning with Taiwan. The US has never seen anything as what is starting to come its way.
