Brazil's Presidential Election Will Determine the Planet's Future | NYT Opinion

- On Oct. 30, Brazilians go to the polls to elect their next president. But at stake is something far more important than just the leadership of one of the world’s largest economies.
Whoever wins will inherit control over more than half of the Amazon rainforest and, by extension, will determine the conditions for future life on Earth.
In the Opinion video above, Brazilian Indigenous leader Txai Suruí argues that this election is the last chance to save the Amazon.
Because of soaring deforestation rates under President Jair Bolsonaro, the Amazon ecosystem is on the brink of catastrophe. The loss of millions of trees has already caused decreased rainfall. Areas not yet turned to ranchland are projected to shift from dense forest into dry savannah as the Amazon reaches a “tipping point” - of spiraling degradation from which there is no return.
This collapse will be felt far beyond the Amazon. Rainfall across two continents, including over California’s agricultural heartlands, comes from the Amazon. Lifesaving medicines are derived from its species. Billions of tons of carbon are held in its trees. Our dependence on this ecosystem cannot be overstated.
President Bolsonaro is defiant in his desire to sacrifice the Amazon, its conservation reserves and Indigenous lands to agribusiness and “development.” His challenger, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, promises to stop the destruction and proved that he can be tough on environmental crime and deliver results during two previous terms in office.
For many Brazilians, this will be a painful election between two deeply flawed candidates. But for the future of human life on this planet, there is only one right choice.

The perspective of this video denotes Brazil only matters because of Amazon and it is the sole responsible for it. The country has other matters at stake as much important as environment. And Amazon also extends to other countries like Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.

So, for you, are other issues more important than preserving the largest tropical forest in the world and thereby preserving life? If we destroy the forest, we are ending life.
Wish the conversation would go to the mechanisms we can introduce to value the forest for what it intrinsically provides as a global resource.
Problem is the hypocrisy that exists between nations and policies. Norway is wealthy and has a voice due to carbon production from offshore oil and gas for reference. Norway is a leader in environmental policies, yet their oil and gas production keeps increasing.
After living in Brazil for six years and being involved with material conversations on domestic policy, the West should reward Brazil by enabling a carbon scheme.
Allow Brazil to monetize the Amazon through carbon credits that would provide economic growth without deforestation. Price it to compete with lumber and cattle. It’s a tax we should all want to pay.
If we in West care, then let’s show it through real, material action and pay to preserve.

Lula is the record holder for fires in the Amazon. Between 2003 and 2010, when he was in the Presidency of the Republic, Brazil registered 2.4 million fires. On a monthly average, the numbers exceed the 25,000 mark.
Bolsonaro, if he continues with the average of the first 44 months, will reach the end of his term with just over 780,000 fires. The monthly average of around 16,000 proves that there are fewer hotspots in the current administration than there were at the time when Lula ruled the Planalto. Temer (15.7 thousand), FHC (14.6 thousand) and Dilma (14.4 thousand) complete the list.
Contrary to the world, Brazil shows a significant decrease in the number of fires and burnings in 2022. From January 1st to August 15th, the country recorded 49,600 fires, against almost 59,000 in the same period in 2021. A decrease 15%, while in the rest of South America the increase was 19%. In the last two years, the country has reduced by around 25% the incidence of fires and burning in its territory.

Studies published last year showed that the Amazon forest already is a net carbon emitter, due to the destroyed parts of the forest and their impact on the remaining forest. More deforestation will make it even worse.

While I hate the attitude of, "Ugh, not ANOTHER international election," especially since Americans hardly pay attention to international politics / current events at all - I really appreciate this video. I hope the American media continues to bring attention to international issues and works to dispel the notion that the US exists in a vacuum. Even if burning down the rainforest didn't affect them directly (which it certainly would), it wouldn't hurt them to show concern or interest regardless.

This is why I am neither left or right. I disagree with many of the left's agendas, but I agree on the importance of nature conservation (which the right put behind development). The title is badly misleading. Although we should all value the Amazonian forests for many reasons--not just as a climate sink--its destruction would not be to blame for a climate catastrophe, nor is it necessarily determinative. The blame and the agency rest with emitters, not those who steward the sinks.
Sure, burning forests is a source of *short-cycle* carbon emissions (i.e., atmosphere -> biomass -> atmosphere), as is all regenerative decay in forests. However, the climate crisis is due to *long-cycle* carbon emissions (i.e., geological deposits such as coal, methane, oil -> atmosphere).
In a way, carbon sinks (e.g., soils, forests, oceans) pose moral hazards, because they are buffers that keep us from suffering the consequences of our own actions. The longer the delay between actions and consequences, the more we wallow in plausible deniability.
Sure, I want to save forests, but the climate crisis is over-determined, and emitters are to blame.

I’m sorry, but did you visit Amazonia forest already? I supposed that not, right? It’s unimaginable big, is impossible you care each Inch of this place, but if you go there you can find lots of military points inside, soldiers patrolling the forest.
I could visit there 2 times, 1 week + 2 weeks, first with Dilma 2015, and 2020 with Bolsonaro; my impression is that the forest is much better now, with the army patrols, than 2015.
