Millions Suffered. Hundreds Died. Greg Abbott Will Probably Get Re-Elected Anyway. | NYT Opinion

- Should politicians be held accountable for disasters which unfold under their watch? It’s a question for Texans voting for governor next week.
The incumbent, Greg Abbott, was at the helm during a storm in February 2021 in which the state - sometimes billed as the “energy capital of America” - was paralyzed by power failures. About 4.5 million homes lost electricity and at least 240 people died in freezing temperatures.
While the storm blanketed most of the United States, only Texas suffered such widespread blackouts and high death toll.
In the Opinion video above, we reveal how Mr. Abbott’s decisions before and during the storm allowed an entirely preventable humanitarian catastrophe to unfold. Among the victims was 87-year-old Connie Mae Richey, whose terrible story was brought to light in the documentary “Protecting the Greed.”
We show how fossil fuel companies made billions in unexpected profits during the storm and how some later rewarded Mr. Abbott with campaign donations.
Quick to blame others, Mr. Abbott somehow dodged full accountability - indeed, polls suggest that he is sailing toward a third term. His likely success next week shows that when Americans vote increasingly along party lines, politicians can fail with impunity.

I don't think there's ever been a better argument against unregulated capitalism then a CEO discussing how much money their company made off people dying.
The everyday person with a voter ID doesn't have a clue. Molded ignorance is exactly what the 'Abbotts' of the political world want. Beats the informed - every time. Ignorance gave us what we are today.
That's because you don't Sundstrand capitalism. There is not capitalism here because it doesn't exist an energy free market and so a person cannot choose the company that he/she wants to provide energy. This are monopolies created by the state government so this case is another example about how capitalism could be the solution and yet is blamed as the problem from people that don't understand it. Capitalism exists only when there is freedom of choice.
@@davidebalestrini8857Balestrini I do agree with you that energy resources are monopolized, and that in itself is a huge problem, but I don't think that YOU fully understand what capitalism is TRULY. You are not alone. MOST of us think of capitalism in this way:
1. There is a good or service needed.
2. There is someone (some people, SOME-THING) that is able to provide that good/service.
3. People who need said good/service pay money for said good/service.
Capitalism in general is not a bad thing, and in fact, most of us would agree that it is good. Some people have a need (for a good or service), and someone is able to satisfy that need for a price... Yeah, that's how most of us think of capitalism and it shows in how we vote (if we vote).
Way WAY WAAAYYY back in the days, this was done through barter. You have a good or service that I need, I have a good or service that you need, I will give you what you need in exchange for what I need, and we will barter for how much we will exchange (how much is your good/service worth my good/service?). However, here is the official definition of 'capitalism' by Merriam-Webster online:
"an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market" - www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/capitalism
So, if this is what capitalism is today, is it really good for the majority of us regular folk?
And, please break down this definition and tell me where fair trade comes into play? This whole definition SCREAMS red flag;
a. private or corporate OWNERSHIP of CAPITAL goods... !!!
b. INVESTESTMENT that are determined MAINLY by PRIVATE COMPETION... !!!
And I absolutely "love" how at the end of this definition, it gives you, "in a free market". Is the market truly free? Really? This is a form of mental, emotional, and political manipulation.
So, all this being said, when people start to turn into a COMPANY/CORPORATION, there needs to be regulations. Point-blank. Period. It's as simple as that. Otherwise, you will get MONOPOLIES. Why does this happen? Because it comes to a point when folks make money just for the sake of making more money, and no one cares who suffers or dies in the process! This is awful! No one wants a government or a society that condones this way of thinking.
So, I guess the biggest question is, 'what does capitalism mean to YOU?'

How can Americans can be okay with the corruption between corporate donors and politicians?
Ignorance and apathy
Ignorance and apathy
We're not.
We're not but we're not forcing our legislators to do anything about it. Only a few such as Senator Whitehouse and Katie Porter even discuss the topic. It's strangling America and has both parties at each other's throat arguing about everything but the real causes behind inequities.
There used to be some moderately effective limits on corporate donations. Then about 10 years ago, a flawed Supreme Court case known as Citizens United, basically argued that corporate "speech", via huge donations, was legal. Since that time, corporate donations have skyrocketed, and they're allowed to hide these donations via dark money NGOs.

Those energy officials should be prosecuted. Their punishment should be to live in an uninsulated home with no power for 5+ years. Citizens should have a class action lawsuit against Abbott and the energy tycoons.
Hahahahahahaha. Sadly , I live in Texas and I voted for Beto because of reasons like this . GOP has done absolutely NOTHING positive for Texans and will do nothing more if re elected . Republicans will turn this country into an third world hellhole if they stay in power. I feel no pity for folks who keep voting for them especially when many of them are low income people themselves who rely on food stamps,medicare/medicaid , social security and other government programs themselves yet continue to vote for an party that wants to get rid of all of them. How can you be that native ????? At this point , you might as well try to stop helping them since they don't wanna listen yet be stubborn and vote GOP .

Yes he did. Congratulations Texas keep digging your grave.
I was working on a project a guy outside of San Antonio and asked him about how he felt about Abbot. He asked about why I didn't like Red states so, I told him. I gave him all the reasons Texas is a corpo-state with Abbot selling out it's citizens. He agreed, but his parents would never forgive him if he weren't a republican. I told him that sounds like he doesn't get to live his life, like his parents were livin it for him. He never spoke to me again. RIP Charles, it's been 8 months. Progress got done without you.
These folks cannot fathom the idea of individuality. They need someone to tell them how and what to think and feel. That's why other people's lifestyles offend them soo greatly when in reality, they have 0 impact on them what so ever.

funny thing is democratic states spend 25-30 percent MORE on the police. I lived in Boulder, CO and they spend 75% of their ENTIRE CITY BUDGET on the police...
In the rest of the world this is called corruption. In the US, it's called lobbying and donations. I'm honestly amazed at how the US was able to survive with all the private interest groups behind politics
Because people are fooled into believing that America is a democracy.
There is no reason that energy companies shouldn't be owned and controlled by the state. Private energy is directly at odds with the needs of the public and leaving it to the free market is purposeless because they hold monopolies on their respective areas.
Same with water and shared infrastructure like roads.
the absolute irony of this statement is hilarious. given u are literally complaining abt politicians being corrupt and then also complaining about private companies monopoly, yet are ok with giving these exact politicians control over this same monopoly? at least private corps are held accountable to the public when the gov leaves the market alone
didnt you watch the video? they are low key controlled by the state, but not in the way you want
Agreed 100%! As it stands, the state is controlled by money instead of Democracy. The sham Republic needs dismantled and we need to start voting for policies instead of people.
@@adam3496 can you explain how these private companies have been held accountable for the hundreds of deaths?

Yeah it was worse for my house being away from the city because fro Saturday to Friday I had almost zero power and absolutely no water. We were having to boil snow ever time the power would come on which might have only happened once a day at times. There was no where we could go either because we live at the bottom of a hill so we couldn't even get out of our driveway.

You have to ask yourselves what owning guns actually helped the gun owner achieve, considering the premise of gun ownership to help prevent government abuse.
At this juncture, the government, private enterprises and private conglomerates are all armed to the teeth and so deeply entrenched in our lives that the average person can do nothing to stop their influence, through gun ownership.
Surely a lot of gun owners back in the day would have perceived the following reforms as a form of "government overreach" - women's & minorities suffrage (voting), ending segregation, legalizing interracial marriage, other civil rights, immigration, legalizing homosexuality, legalizing abortion. And yet they failed to stop these measures even though they owned guns. Abortion is under scrutiny again but that didn't happen because people own guns today.
So, back to the question - what exactly did gun owners achieve because they owned guns?
Self defense is a very important thing to owning guns, even without the thought of overthrowing the government guns are important, some may say it leads to more violence but even in times without guns wars and murders happened all the time, and modern day Britain has many stabbings and acid attacks. Owning guns means the gun owner achieves safety and peace of mind, and the ability to protect your family.
That is a false primus. The true primus is that is was necessary and right to have strong well organized and well regulated militia to defend the country and state from all enimies.
Don't forget that at the time, Indian attacks were a common thing.
We still could use some well regulated militias, maybe with some basic military training say from a Professional soldier. Maybe a combat veteran. Showing the basics of how to function as a part of a military unit.
I could understand many Americans would want to participate. Learn how to breakdown an M16? Go on a field trip to an artillery range and be instructed how to fire a Howitzer?
Who wouldn't want to attached?
@@genebaughbba3479 Your attempt at a historical context is laughable. Go read Scalia's investigation into the historical context in the Heller case. It's free, and downloadable.
Oh, and it's "premise," not "primus."
@@obsoletevalues6209 We The People were the army. Simple. It would be nonses for anyone of that time to even suggest disarming the population. There's bear out in the woods.
@@HannaBerrry I'm not sure that that is even the case as in most cases the gun gets misused by a family member or child or is used in a fit of rage to address a situation where a gun was not needed, and then you have just disrupted your family, your neighborhood, your community. On paper it seems like a good idea but how reality plays out is different.
