Dude, thanks for this video, and the other on pushrods. Both things I’ve been checking and trying to do but not super confident in yet. I’ve watched a dozen videos on this but you simplified it enough that I could grasp the information. Coming from the DSM world over to LS has been a new world for me… Any plans on doing a video on piston to valve clearance in the near future, that’s my next mission.

Awesome, glad to have helped! I do have plans to do a PtoV measurement video, it’ll take me a couple weeks to find the perfect example engine to use.

    Appreciate the video!
What about a video with the digital degree wheel kit you mentioned?

Sure, I kinda forgot about that one. I have an entire LS engine build series I’m working on soon also. It’ll be a forged 370 assembly process.

I just had a 🤯 moment the second you took the piston stop off and it hit 0 at TDC. I was lost because i seen the other pistons hit TDC besides the one with the piston stop and it confused me so my question is how do you know how far to set the piston stop or is it just one set length? I plan on degreeing my cam with the heads off. Ive seen a couple different piston stop methods and this part confused me alittle.

The piston stop is used so the degree wheel can be set to absolute 0 on cylinder 1. Basically you rotate it before and after tdc, and you want both directions the pointer to match the numbers as the dead center of that is 0 - when the piston is all the way up. So if you have 15° before against the stop, the pointer should be at 15° after when using the stop.
Think of the engine as 8 one cylinder engines instead of 1 eight cylinder engine. The other pistons location don’t matter as we are only checking Cylinder # 1 events for this procedure.

I have the same up and TSP camshaft. Does the camshaft really to be degree? If so, where to purchase a cam degree kit
    Thanks

I believe they all should be checked. 90 out of 100 are probably ok without any changes, but some aftermarket timing sets can vary. The most accurate has been GM gears/chain sets. Fortunately TSP’s cams have been some of the most accurate ones due to modern equipment, that other places do not have. My last one was supposed to be 113.5icl, measured at 113.4icl, and you rarely get that accuracy elsewhere, through the entire camshaft (meaning cylinder 1 and cylinder 8 match)
At home I have a Comp Cams degree kit, the one I used here is a mix of a Moroso degree wheel, and Jegs components.

great video!! why can't you just put a dial indicator on piston #1 and set the wheel to zero when its at TDC?
