So I had a smaller one near a transit station and metro rail. You often go unnoticed as a single adult without a vehical. Now you have kids and a vehical you'll be noticed. And services that claim to offer help really they're not adiquit to meet needs. A family would have an easier time obtaining them but what little Aid is provided is often not sufficient. I used to work at a "nice" homeless shelter in Texas, and the "help" is stretched thin and underfunded. The rooms were three bunk beds in a 10x10' room, one bed for each wall, the fourth wall had a closet. Resident's stuff was always getting stolen. There weren't enough bathrooms to allow the residents time to shower every day. You had enough time to brush your teeth and wash your face. Dinner every night was spaghetti and a slice of white bread. Curfew was 7pm, which isn't flexible with the working hours in most retail/fast food/service industry jobs. So getting a job to get out of that situation is even more difficult. 25% of our residents had Bachelors degrees and once held jobs that would pay for a middle class life, if you are saying these people got in that situation by their own doing, you are wrong. They had weekly drug tests and would get evicted if they failed their second one. It's not anything close to luxurious, I would live in my car or a storage unit over that place. The one nice thing was that they allowed you to keep 1 dog or cat, a new rule, the residents used to have to give up what was often their only loving family member. I just cringe when people say there is always help, that help is insufficient.

    There are a lot of comments on here where people are being exceptionally judgmental.
    Millions of people in United States are one or two paychecks away from something like this happening to them. You lose your job, get injured or sick…you hope that your savings will last while you look for a new job or while you recover. But rent and expenses quickly eat up your savings...until both your money and options are gone...and then you lose the roof over your head.
    Thankfully, here in the United States we have safety nets for situations like this...public assistance and other programs. Yet, many of you would judge people who ask for assistance, as well.
    For all who are so quick to make judgments, I truly hope that if you're ever in a position where you need help that people do not do the same to you.

      Especially from what I've seen, its very well possible that you could be too disabled to do any substantial jobs to make enough money to pay rent for a place to live, but not be disabled enough to qualify for disability benefits. When I was homeless in the early 2010's due to depression and anxiety which was causing alcohol abuse, I never did stay in a storage unit, however I did do some stealth camping in wooded areas, under bridges, and in abandoned buildings

      In FL my county, getting help takes months of paperwork and red tape even if you have small kids.
      The places only do intake a couple times a month, but don't post the dates and times you have to call and leave a message. By the time you get a call back, the in take time has passed or the funds ran out. Come back next month.
      This family only got help because the media was involved. And city and county officials needed to look good we are helping this family by skipping all the red tape because it's a major election year and they want to Keep there seats and county jobs.

      They should have called the police, not human services. All human services will do is give these people taxpay dollars they didn't earn. The fact they put them into emergency housing proves that this news crew did the wrong thing. More welfare for those who refuse to work. The adults should be in jail and forced to pay for the clean up of the mess they left, and the kids should be put into foster care. If this family wasn't split up and the parents put in jail for a long time, then I'm going to be furious.

    • @r2dxhate

      @@Chris-Christopher- Yeah that makes sense. If someones family isn't ruined, you will be furious. For the price of housing them in jail, we could put a real roof over their head instead, and keep the family together. Some kids are better off with foster parents, but most often it's just a surefire to path mental problems for the kids that got separated from their parents. There are happy families in countries with way worse standards of livings.

    • @Chris-Christopher-
      @Chris-Christopher- 3 года назад +1

      @@r2dxhate, you say "For the price of housing them in jail, we could put a real roof over their head instead, and keep the family together". I say for the price of giving them a roof over their head, we could lock them all up for good and not have to worry about them committing crimes in the future. I don't care if some kids good better in foster care or if they do better with their parents. This isn't about what's best for the kids or the parents. This is about following the law and punishing those who do not follow the law. They slept in a storage unit. That is illegal. They need to be punished for it. Lock the parents for 10 years and ensure they never see the kids again.
      As for the kids, the foster care is broken and mostly used by leeches to collected money for nothing. That is why these kids should be put into juvenile hall until they are 18, and then transferred to adult prison. At their age they are beyond fixing and should be proactively kept off the streets. If the liberals were not so weird about capital punishment, I would like to see it used in this care for everyone involved. I am tired of these people ruining my great country.

    • @r2dxhate
      @r2dxhate 3 года назад +6

      @@Chris-Christopher- I assume you're being sarcastic with ghoulish overkill to prove your point.
      But if you're being genuine, then you seem very religious about the law. You do realize that this country is less than 300 years old, and the laws are supposed to be made by the people, right? Except the system has been perverted so that laws are made by corporations and special interests, and sometimes even perverted by foreign interests.
      You want capitol punishment for a parent doing whatever they can to keep their kids off the street? You're a monster. Have you seen the "working homeless" problem? Where democrat cities like LA have such a high cost of living that fully employed single parents can't afford to live anywhere?
      Cities like Detroit built this country with brands like Ford, and then communist China stole our manufacturing and made those economies collapse.
      Factory workers spent their lives pushing a button, or screwing in the same thing over and over, for surprisingly ok money; and then got replaced by a machine. How do you blame those people for not being able to learn highly technical jobs? Assembly line jobs attracted the dullest of humans to do rudimentary jobs, and then those jobs washed up and left a bunch of unskilled workers in a central location.
      This "Systemic racism" stuff really seems to be about covering up classism.
      But you just sound bitter.

Then when they do something like this to avoid living in the elements on the streets. The county gets mad and wants to prosecute. Makes no sense when you see people trying to get out of their position. The storage facility I rent from has about 7 people living there. But I think the owners know and are only looking at the money value. And my city is also anti homeless. They don't offer any long term solution as most small cities. This is a result of people either down on their luck, Homeless after released from jail or drug use. When both President Trump and Hillary were campaigning. Neither one ever mentioned anything about the homeless. Pretty Sad!

Not just the clueless big media reactions but most of the brain dead social media reactions such as a lot of the vile comments right here on RUclips. Our modern society glorifies high finance con artists, crooked politicians, vapid pop music celebrities, and talentless reality TV stars. Showering such fools with endless amounts of money (money that these millionaires don't need at this point). Then someone gets in a bad situation like living in a storage unit or crashing on a friend's couch for a couple weeks... And holy moly what a scumbag that unfortunate person is for having the nerve to not be rich and $ucce$$ful!!!! It's just beyond the point of shaking sense into these fools who have zero empathy for another human being. These tools are just soft fleshy robots who consume and buy. Materialist mechanisms, that's all 90% of the populace is anymore. It's sad. The funny thing is when there's an uprising or collapse of government, the resourceful folks who endured hardships with novel solutions will be the ones who survive while all the little corporate capitalist slaves die when they can no longer tweet about the calamity facing them.

      I have personally been homeless 3 times and have managed to pull myself out of those situations. Was it hard? Yes. Very time consuming and the will to want to do so.This was my own fault due to some dui's when I was younger. I am now disabled due to heart failure and live on a fixed income. This was not how I thought my life would turn out. But God gave me no choice in the matter. I own a car with insurance and rent a nice room in a home. That's it. Due to my disability I was not successful enough to own my own home or able to gain enough years for a regular retirement from a company. I do have 30 years work credits so I will be entitled to a small social security check when the time comes. My point is I live very minimal. I think people that have everything under the sun in their garage and the roof of a home over their head. Still don't think have enough. That's where that old saying comes from. "Keeping up with the Jones" Because they don't want the neighbors looking down on them because their car is an older model. Or their kids aren't carrying cell phones like the other kids. I think most of the people who make bias and selfish comments on subjects like this against mankind is very uncalled for and maybe they should try to be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem spreading their hate in words because they can. There is also another saying "Never say never" because no one is an exception to homelessness.

      Caryn Schwengel Yep, they scold everyone else for spending money on anything but cheap drinking water and rice & beans, yet when Christmas shopping season rolls around they urge everyone to rush out a buy! buy! buy! or else the economy will crater into a dark pit of death. They want us spending our money on all the products and services offered from the companies they invest in, and they simultaneously shame us at the same time for buying these products that make them wealthier. Plus then a lot of their middle class salary slaves shame anyone even slightly beneath them in terms of wages and material possessions.

    FYI: For those considering doing this, more-than-often(especially non-climate controlled storage), the inside walls are often painted with a mixture of paint & pesticide. The idea is to keep bugs out. But when it gets hot inside, the pesticide becomes much more active, and thus pesticide into the lungs becomes deadly. The same idea applies if/when someone uses a heater(to keep warm) inside the container.

    If you live in an high cost of living state it can be highly beneficial in saving up for an rv to live in rather than a van as they don't have enough basic equipment and essentials to make it easier. Used to view living out of an rv or van with rv essentials as a low life way of living but man! Having a new perspective and not going by what society says in this regard. You do what you have to do to survive.

    If this were to happen in other states, the children would have been removed by the Dept of Children and Families and placed in foster care. Other states have no "emergency housing" outside of shelters and when that time is up its up. I had DCF tell me that its not their job to find my clients housing, its the parents job to find housing and if they cant the children will be taken.

When you lose it all sometimes just small shit like being able to have a few cigs to get through stressful day. And you dont have to be on drugs to live like this. Many many homeless people in this country struggle with mental health issues. My major depressive disorder has caused me to lose it all a few times.

    Ther are alot of ways to make this work and not be that bad. They keep saying no electricity or plumbing. Jesus christ electricity and plumbing is relatively new when compaired to how long the human race has existed. And these folks have it a whole lot better than some. They have a roof and a place to lay their head at night. The reporter says its dangerous....why because their only light is a cell phone? I see nothing wrong with it. The only thing i see that is questionable is all the cigarettes on the ground right outside their door.... A huge pile of them. That actually speaks volumes of the person living there. It says alot about the personality type. Not the fact that they smoke ,but the fact that they would just let them pile up like that right outside ther door. They also just have things just thrown in the unit and a place carved out for the bed. What im saying is they could make it easier on themselves if they were a bit more neat and clean about their situation. I lived in a storage unit for three years ....BY CHOICE! It was one of those storage facilities that were not owned by a major chain. The unit i lived in had electricity though. And every storage unit ive ever seen has a light in it and at least one outlet. So i dont know why theirs wouldnt. But i also bought a composting toilet from an rv store i also bought a membership to a gym that had showers. I was quite comfortable. In fact i look back on that time fondly. I lived there for 3 years actually closer to 4. I had a plan when i did this. I was able to save almost 80,000 dollars in that time. Then i bought a small house at auction that needed alot of work and i mean ALOT! But i paid 32,000 for it and quickly went to work fixing it up to where i could live in it. And after 3 years and 7 months of living in a storage unit i OWNED my home ! Now after 6 years my house is complete and i live in a house that does not have a mortgage ITS ALL MINE! And i worked hard for it and im proud of what i did to achieve this. The only bad part about living in a storage unit is the stigma that people put on it. Oh these poor people living in a storage unit....they are sub human because they dont have a rent payment of 1200 a month or a electric bill of 250 a month oh those poor people. Thats ridiculous. I looked at it this way ...."MY RENT IS ONLY 137 DOLLARS A MONTH ! I can save 1500 a month on living expenses on top of my other savings. My story is no different than theirs they are just looking at it negatively. They could very easily turn that negative into a positive. Even with a minimum wage job they could save up a nice little nest egg . but i got a feeling that its more a case of drugs or drinking and wanting the tax payer to take care of them. Just hanging out in front of your storage unit smoking and feeling sorry for yourself will get you nowhere. But i digress. I would do it all over again i honestly can say i had absolutely no hardships while i lived in a storage unit. It was sooo easy. Not alit to clean up. No grass to cut. And after awhile the other people that rented units got to know what i was doing and it got back to the owner of the facility and i pled my case and told him that i would offer security and watch over the place at night. And thats when i did start having some chores ti do around the place i.e. pi king up trash and keeping the place clean. I also earned a few extra bucks when people moved their stuff out and into ther homes. I helped at least 200 people move stuff and everyone of them insisted on paying me. It got to the point where if i was on site and someone needed help the owner would call me from the office and say "can you help so and so move their stuff into unit whatever?" When he rented a new unit he would say to the new customer" i got a guy back there that will help you move your stuff if you need help." I really miss that place sometimes. So stop feeling sorry for yourself hold your head high and make the best of the situation .....its not that bad
