The rifle round from that short barrell isn't going to have the velocity or the accuracy to be effective on large game...the .410 shotgun is also basically useless on anything other than snakes...the .45 Long Colt would make a decent close range defense round..but you're still stuck using a two shot single action that's heavier than pistols that are MUCH more effective.. oh, & the calibers this novelty uses are all too heavy to lug around much ammo...so NOPE, it's definitely not any kind of "survival' pistol..
In theory, the first round ought to take care of things in a survival situation. In theory, you should never need to fire that second round. But otherwise, yeah, 45-70 is a MF even in a large heavy pistol.

I really enjoyed the video. Haven't been up in Alaska since my Army years which was 40 years ago. Been salmon fishing in chitna ak , around earthquake bay area, glacier bay, as well as mountain climbing, and hunting ( actually lost a friend & my brothers dog while hunting in the winter but found him 3-1/2 hours later when it started to get really dark in the woods. Boy was he ever greatful). Me and my brother used alot of ammo trying to indicate a lost person and allow him to track back but is difficult to do in heavy woodlands and mountainous area. Someone living on the side of the mountain blasted his stereo to help him find his way to a main road and thats how we found him & 🐕 "Cona" . Anyways the talk of Alaska brought back memories and thank you for taking the time out to make the video of this very nice craftsmanship of a gun that I'll look into buying if I can find it in Springfield, MA. I feel like a beaver-tail on that grip would help enormously. And definitely a full-size grip if you ever expect people to use 45-70. This concept could be modernized so easily.
Yes but the first guy casually gripped the gun he didn't take a brazing stance and didn't have a really strong a grip on it he didn't take a moment to take a bracing stance he just fired it within a second or two of grasping the gun no wonder it bit him like that he has no business firing a gun that powerful SMH
I have the American Derringer 2 1/2” 45/410 that my wife bought me for a birthday 20+ years ago. Not only does it have sentimental value but it is a superbly built handgun that is actually not bad to shoot. I keep 410 self defense round in it with a sticky pocket holster. Nobody walks through a 410 but I have to say, shooting a 45/70 would have to be a fire emergency 😂
Dick Cheney shot a guy with a shotgun shell larger than a .410 *and* from a full length barrel, the man was fine. .410 is a joke caliber for self defense. Load it with .45 Colt DPX.

I found one of these at a local pawn shop a few months ago. I called American derringer because mines a bit different. Mine has both barrels are 45-70. American derringer told me they only made a few in this configuration, which makes it quite rare. It looks the same as yours with the same grip.
The idea behind the 45/70 is to stick in the bear’s ribs when he’s on top of you. No aiming required and it’ll get old bear off you. The other rounds have their own uses.
When I was 10 years old (about six decades ago) my dad got a single shot 12 gauge in a trade. He knew nothing about guns, but bought shells for it anyway. I begged him to let me shoot it. Instead of telling me to put the stock into my shoulder like he did (it hurt him) he told me to hold the stock under my arm and aim down the barrel. When I pulled the trigger the shotgun slid back with the hammer ripping a hunk out of the web of my hand and putting a gash below my eye! There was blood everywhere and dad rushed me to the doctor. At first the doctor thought I'd been shot with my dad screaming about a gun doing all that damage. Eventually he got the whole story and I was stitched up. Lesson: People with no experience with guns should NOT tell others how to use them!
I had a friend who came to school with a black ring around his eye, we all assumed and were scared to ask if his father had hit him or something to that effect. About a week later, literally a week later someone had the courage to ask and it turned out he'd shot a rifle way too big for him and same deal, it shot straight back under his arm and the scope stopped on his eye socket
Well, yeah, your father gave you bad advice there. From about the age of 10 the only gun I had available was a single shot 12 ga. All my buddies has .410's and 22's. I never had a problem with the recoil. I weighed abut 70 pounds, I guess. Lean into it and let it shove you back. In other words, go with the recoil and it's not a big deal. Ok, I've never tried a 45-70 derringer but I imagine it is about the same theory....get a good grip and direct the recoil up and over your head if necessary.
Okay, for one, the .45-70 should be the first one to go off as a last ditch against a bear attack. The .45 Colt should be 2nd and for yourself if the rifle round doesn't kill the bear.
Honestly, if you think your gonna hit a charging bear with that hand cannon I’m impressed. However naive it may be, but it’s an impressive thought. I would imagine that gun would be relied on in a very hairy situation and you don’t want to expend that 45/70 until the bear is close enough to kill you.... Good luck placing that one ☝️ shot on target at any distance.
I have the M1 in 38/357. It was my back up the entire time I was on duty as a LEO in California. (Paladin style) Its a one handed gun in 38 but hold on with two in 357. For those that haven't fired one of these in a magnum or heavier, go into the kitchen, and with a flat hand slam it down onto the counter as hard as you can. That will almost duplicate shooting one of these.
My buddy had a single shot Thompson Center pistol in .30-06 with a 12" barrel, that thing was an absolute hand slapper with hotter rounds. Probably the hardest recoiling pistol I've ever shot, a .44 doesn't even come close. I shot it with one hand and earned the respect of all who witnessed it, everybody else was double fisting it🤣.
Many years ago my brother had a 45 ACP subcompact that I shot once and by once I mean one round. That was all it took to convince me that big rounds in tiny pistols was a fool's choice. It didn't help that the grips were sharply checkered walnut but the biggest problem is they ended in the middle of my palm. You could barely get two fingers on it. I couldn't even imagine what the 45-70 felt like. 😳
Yeah I have a light S&M revolver that shoots 38s and I call it the fast ball. It's like catching a fast ball after you fire it. I have a S&M 357 and it has the weight so doesn't hurt to shoot it.

Call me crazy but I actually enjoy shooting mine. The main issue with mine is the oversized grips tend to break after 120-150 rounds of 45-70. Mine likes 300gr bullets. It will keyhole 405gr bullets after 10 yards.
I honestly don’t remember the recoiling being as bad as it was this time. We were shooting hornady Lever revolution 250 gr. They might be a little too hot for the pistol. That said, if you enjoy shooting yours, you are the man.
A good friend of mine bought one of those. He is an experienced pistolero. First shot, the gun whacked him in the middle of the forehead and and left a bloody wound. Well hell, he should have known to take it seriously.
They obviously made the ultimate derringer…I can see enthusiast’s buying it just to say they got one ….I’d say it’s the knarlyist derringer ever made !
My go to truck/beater gun is a bubba'd post-war No.4 Enfield sporter with a 20" barrel. I also have a .45-70 Siamese Mauser that I regularly hunt moose with as it can digest hot thumper loads with ease

I have a Thompson Contender with a 45-70 barrel. All I could find was Leverevolution ammo. Decide I would shoot it and reload the brass. The recoils was extreme.......to put it mildly. I changed the grips to what I "thought" would be better to control the recoil. Recoil was worse. Finally stopped above my head and gave me hammer bite. Look at a Contender some time and see how far that thing recoiled in my hand. The grip I changed out had a beavertail on it. The other one did not. Just finger grooves on the front that did NOTHING to help.
No doubt, 45-70 is tough enough from an 1886, shoulder bruises every time. Took me years to find a butt-pad solution but it still hurts like a first wife!
I think if you shoot the 45/70 barrel with light loaded rounds, it's probably a lot more mild. A 300 grain lead bullet with a trap-door level pressure load won't kick like that fairly hot hunting round made for the lever gun.
i have to agree. i imagine the load is more suited for rifle. can say the rifle packs a decent kick. first time i time i shot one it bout knock me on my ass.
If you’re looking for something like this, I think that Bond Arms is a better derringer for the money. They are tanks that are well built and the barrels on the Bond Arms can be changed out to a variety of other barrels/calibers. I have one and love it. I specifically bought mine as a pocket carry for when I’m walking my dogs in the woods near my house.
I bet the velocity leaves a lot to be desired with a cartridge loaded for 20+" barrels. Someone should develop handloads with pistol powder for the sudden surge of .45-70 handguns.
That’s pretty cool about the 45-70! I have a Public Defender that I plink around with using .45LC and .410 shells once every few years (not my favorite gun), but it definitely wouldn’t handle the 45-70 haha.
I have one in 45/410 both barrels, the grip is rounded and much shorter. It's a cool concept and fun to shoot, although as an actual survival tool, it's not terribly practical, it's pretty much impossible to hit anything at any range but very close.
I had a guy bring me one of these to work on one time, had the original pistol grip rather than that S&W grips you have. It had a terrible trigger pull, I'm guessing close to 20lbs because it was bending my tester arm so I stopped. I brought it down to just under 8 lbs, but didn't want to go any lower than that due to no trigger guard. I was scared testing with .45LC and 410's and thought it's not that bad. I'm glad I didn't do the 45-70 LOL.
I have the S&W survival kit, comes with a M360, shoots 38 special and 357 magnum. The 357 really turns it into a hand cannon, 5 shots. Small, light and consealable.
It's too bad you didn't get into more detail about the mechanics of this gun. How does it handle different calibers and lengths of rounds? Are the top and bottom chambers different diameters? Is one chamber threaded and the other not? Or are both chambers the same? Would've liked to see that explained.

Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! I've had a Bond Arms for awhile, .45/.410. It's a shooter, but man is it heavy! With 3 1/2 inch barrels mine is a 1 1/2 pounds loaded. I don't know about y'all but that's to heavy for everyday carry. So, it stays in my boat. It does a number on snakes and such. They are built like a tank literally.

Knowing how 410 recoils in a Derringer like that, the visual difference between 410 and 45-70 recoil in the video tells me I don't want to try 45-70. My tip for firing smaller high recoil handguns is to wear fingerless work gloves at the range it saves a lot of pain. I'd be interested to know what the velocity of the 45-70 is out of such a short barrel, it seems there might be a lot of blast and recoil for not much energy in the bullet that leaves the barrel.
I'm surprised that it can generate that much pressure/recoil in such a short distance. I'd have expected either a big fireball or a big puff of unburned powder. I guess it was JUST enough.
A light "hand cannon", could also be called a "large wrist breaker" and a "small wrist removal device". That is very impressive and scary to shoot, again, for the wrist damage risk. Awesome. You're brave men to try it. 💚
Bloody wristkiller, i just saw the grips and that smelled to big recoil. Unbelievable strong build of this tiny gun. I would not have the balls to shoot that monster.
It's a boot gun for rangers. If a bear is actively attacking you, then this gun makes all the sense in the world. In every other scenario, though, you are correct.

That's interesting alright, but I think I'll take my Heritage Rough Rider over that. Can use a .22LR cylinder, or .22WMR cylinder. Good little revolver for taking small game, plenty accurate, and the price is right. A bit too big to be a pocket gun, but pretty good nonetheless. Besides, with a barrel that short, your shot shells will have terrible range, not to mention you're just wasting powder on those .45-70 cartridges. You definitely want more barrel to get the most bang out of those. Short little barrel like that for a rifle round is a big nope. I don't even like 10" AR-15 builds. Waste of primers and powder. Still... after seeing this, I kinda want one just to have one. 😅

I can only imagine what this would be like. I bought my wife a Glock 26 for her birthday a couple of years back. It only came down to about the middle of my palm. I was very uncomfortable firing it. Fits in her hand though (I have big hands.) A pistol that small with anything larger than a 9mm seems kind of ridiculous. Why would anyone put a .410 or 45-70 in a derringer?

I also really think this guns intention was also to accomodate running out of ammo for a specific calibre instead of being good at any 1 round, its really a use what you got sort of situation as its ment for protection from wildlife
My dad and I used to shoot his original 47-70 Springfield trap door. I remember after 20 rounds even from that ole trap door with no padding on the butt end just the steel that wrapped around the wood. I would come home with big red welts on my right shoulder. The only other gun from that period with a huge kick for a rifle was dads 50-70 sharps carbine. I think I need one of these 45-70 survivors models. Does anyone have any info on pricing, do they still make them. I’m in GA. Should be pretty easy to find.

Okay, for one, the .45-70 should be the first one to go off as a last ditch against a bear attack. The .45 Colt should be 2nd and for yourself if the rifle round doesn't kill the bear.

Honestly, if you think your gonna hit a charging bear with that hand cannon I’m impressed. However naive it may be, but it’s an impressive thought.
I would imagine that gun would be relied on in a very hairy situation and you don’t want to expend that 45/70 until the bear is close enough to kill you.... Good luck placing that one ☝️ shot on target at any distance.

I have the M1 in 38/357. It was my back up the entire time I was on duty as a LEO in California. (Paladin style) Its a one handed gun in 38 but hold on with two in 357. For those that haven't fired one of these in a magnum or heavier, go into the kitchen, and with a flat hand slam it down onto the counter as hard as you can. That will almost duplicate shooting one of these.

My buddy had a single shot Thompson Center pistol in .30-06 with a 12" barrel, that thing was an absolute hand slapper with hotter rounds. Probably the hardest recoiling pistol I've ever shot, a .44 doesn't even come close. I shot it with one hand and earned the respect of all who witnessed it, everybody else was double fisting it🤣.
And now 20 years later (I dont know your age) due to magazine restrictions this is also Californias duty pistol.

Many years ago my brother had a 45 ACP subcompact that I shot once and by once I mean one round. That was all it took to convince me that big rounds in tiny pistols was a fool's choice. It didn't help that the grips were sharply checkered walnut but the biggest problem is they ended in the middle of my palm. You could barely get two fingers on it. I couldn't even imagine what the 45-70 felt like. 😳
Yeah I have a light S&M revolver that shoots 38s and I call it the fast ball. It's like catching a fast ball after you fire it. I have a S&M 357 and it has the weight so doesn't hurt to shoot it.
If 38 hurts your hand you’re just a puss I shot a 38 snub nose revolver for years and it never hurt my hand

Call me crazy but I actually enjoy shooting mine. The main issue with mine is the oversized grips tend to break after 120-150 rounds of 45-70. Mine likes 300gr bullets. It will keyhole 405gr bullets after 10 yards.
I honestly don’t remember the recoiling being as bad as it was this time. We were shooting hornady Lever revolution 250 gr. They might be a little too hot for the pistol. That said, if you enjoy shooting yours, you are the man.
A good friend of mine bought one of those. He is an experienced pistolero. First shot, the gun whacked him in the middle of the forehead and and left a bloody wound. Well hell, he should have known to take it seriously.

I also have a .45-70 Siamese Mauser that I regularly hunt moose with as it can digest hot thumper loads with ease

I have a Thompson Contender with a 45-70 barrel. All I could find was Leverevolution ammo. Decide I would shoot it and reload the brass. The recoils was extreme.......to put it mildly. I changed the grips to what I "thought" would be better to control the recoil. Recoil was worse. Finally stopped above my head and gave me hammer bite. Look at a Contender some time and see how far that thing recoiled in my hand. The grip I changed out had a beavertail on it. The other one did not. Just finger grooves on the front that did NOTHING to help.
I had one of these. I called it, "the dumbass gun" for obvious reasons. :)

No doubt, 45-70 is tough enough from an 1886, shoulder bruises every time. Took me years to find a butt-pad solution but it still hurts like a first wife!

I think if you shoot the 45/70 barrel with light loaded rounds, it's probably a lot more mild. A 300 grain lead bullet with a trap-door level pressure load won't kick like that fairly hot hunting round made for the lever gun.
I agree. This was our first time shooting the Lever Revolution in it. There was a significant difference in felt recoil.

Looks alot like the Bond Arms Derringers. I dig their 45colt/410 version. Also the 45acp version and interchangeable barrels is cool.

If you’re looking for something like this, I think that Bond Arms is a better derringer for the money. They are tanks that are well built and the barrels on the Bond Arms can be changed out to a variety of other barrels/calibers. I have one and love it. I specifically bought mine as a pocket carry for when I’m walking my dogs in the woods near my house.
They don't make one in 45-70 tho 🤔
I bet the velocity leaves a lot to be desired with a cartridge loaded for 20+" barrels. Someone should develop handloads with pistol powder for the sudden surge of .45-70 handguns.

The barrel that's closest to the hinge is the upper barrel so he had it right.

That’s pretty cool about the 45-70! I have a Public Defender that I plink around with using .45LC and .410 shells once every few years (not my favorite gun), but it definitely wouldn’t handle the 45-70 haha.

I have one in 45/410 both barrels, the grip is rounded and much shorter. It's a cool concept and fun to shoot, although as an actual survival tool, it's not terribly practical, it's pretty much impossible to hit anything at any range but very close.

I had a guy bring me one of these to work on one time, had the original pistol grip rather than that S&W grips you have. It had a terrible trigger pull, I'm guessing close to 20lbs because it was bending my tester arm so I stopped. I brought it down to just under 8 lbs, but didn't want to go any lower than that due to no trigger guard. I was scared testing with .45LC and 410's and thought it's not that bad. I'm glad I didn't do the 45-70 LOL.

I have the S&W survival kit, comes with a M360, shoots 38 special and 357 magnum. The 357 really turns it into a hand cannon, 5 shots. Small, light and consealable.

It's too bad you didn't get into more detail about the mechanics of this gun. How does it handle different calibers and lengths of rounds? Are the top and bottom chambers different diameters? Is one chamber threaded and the other not? Or are both chambers the same? Would've liked to see that explained.

Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! I've had a Bond Arms for awhile, .45/.410. It's a shooter, but man is it heavy! With 3 1/2 inch barrels mine is a 1 1/2 pounds loaded. I don't know about y'all but that's to heavy for everyday carry. So, it stays in my boat. It does a number on snakes and such. They are built like a tank literally.

Knowing how 410 recoils in a Derringer like that, the visual difference between 410 and 45-70 recoil in the video tells me I don't want to try 45-70. My tip for firing smaller high recoil handguns is to wear fingerless work gloves at the range it saves a lot of pain. I'd be interested to know what the velocity of the 45-70 is out of such a short barrel, it seems there might be a lot of blast and recoil for not much energy in the bullet that leaves the barrel.
I'm surprised that it can generate that much pressure/recoil in such a short distance. I'd have expected either a big fireball or a big puff of unburned powder.
I guess it was JUST enough.

Large charges of slow burning powder...🧐. Probably incredibly inefficient.
If you use the black powder loads, you get an evasion smoke screen, and a flamethrower as a bonus.

It's a boot gun for rangers. If a bear is actively attacking you, then this gun makes all the sense in the world. In every other scenario, though, you are correct.

Rex Thing is is I have about 30 boxes of assorted 45/70 around the house for my Marlin. I’d shoot a bear off me with that pistol.
That's interesting alright, but I think I'll take my Heritage Rough Rider over that. Can use a .22LR cylinder, or .22WMR cylinder. Good little revolver for taking small game, plenty accurate, and the price is right. A bit too big to be a pocket gun, but pretty good nonetheless.
Besides, with a barrel that short, your shot shells will have terrible range, not to mention you're just wasting powder on those .45-70 cartridges. You definitely want more barrel to get the most bang out of those. Short little barrel like that for a rifle round is a big nope. I don't even like 10" AR-15 builds. Waste of primers and powder.

I think the 45-70 rounds can only be shot from the top barrel and the .45c/.410 can only be shot in the bottom on these.

I can only imagine what this would be like. I bought my wife a Glock 26 for her birthday a couple of years back. It only came down to about the middle of my palm. I was very uncomfortable firing it. Fits in her hand though (I have big hands.) A pistol that small with anything larger than a 9mm seems kind of ridiculous. Why would anyone put a .410 or 45-70 in a derringer?
To poleaxe a bear that is right on top of you. It's an Alaskan survival pistol. Bears being harder to stop than the weather if it's pissed off, hungry and sees a free human sandwich.

I also really think this guns intention was also to accomodate running out of ammo for a specific calibre instead of being good at any 1 round, its really a use what you got sort of situation as its ment for protection from wildlife

Ever heard the term "loaded for bear"?
My dad and I used to shoot his original 47-70 Springfield trap door. I remember after 20 rounds even from that ole trap door with no padding on the butt end just the steel that wrapped around the wood. I would come home with big red welts on my right shoulder. The only other gun from that period with a huge kick for a rifle was dads 50-70 sharps carbine. I think I need one of these 45-70 survivors models. Does anyone have any info on pricing, do they still make them. I’m in GA. Should be pretty easy to find.
Last I checked it was under $700. There is a 5” barrel or a 7” if I’m not mistaken.
