3:25. You may or may not know, but Rae Carruth had his pregnant GF murdered in 99. The baby was delivered but suffered brain damage. He tried to escape but got caught. He served 18 years in jail.
Love the discussion at the end about the goal of a volume/bulk submission. It’s not about winning on every card. It’s about using the volume so if you win on enough cards the whole order is a success.
I didn't see a refractor line on the '96 select certified Ripken! Crack it out and submit again and pay with more higher return insurance and it may come back a 10! Also, there were only 45 of them made, but at present, I would say maybe only about 10 left that are available to be acquired and not in permanent Ripken collections.
Love love love the financial breakdown aspect you've started including in your PSA orders. I do this, as well. It helps me understand if the submission was a success by evaluating the order as a whole vs any one individual card. Thanks!
I was thinking the same thing. Any card of that POS will not hold any value whatsoever. Why even spend the $18 to get it graded? Looking to post that card at an online company -- like COMC -- hoping that a set builder needs it??
I am a lifetime card collector and recently sent in my entire collection of Kobe Bryant Rookie cards and a couple of other special cards. It was around 50 cards. I have had these cards since I opened the packs, protected them and then rechecked them before I sent them out to get the best grades. I had a card store owner double check them for any defects and cleaning. I was so disappointed that I received the package back last week and it was not higher than a 8 down to 4's with 3 altered ? These all came straight from the vendor. How can you find out what is the issue with the cards ? I have sent PSA 3 emails and not received any response back. I joined the silver subscription program and I have about 20,000 more to get graded but I'm considering BGS now. Please help 🙏 Thank you
I love all of details that you've added to these videos. Seems like just the perfect amount of info. The way you explain it from your point of view, I feel like is extremely helpful. Very cool Maddux and one of the coolest Jordans Ive ever seen. Very thankful for these Gem Mint 10 Videos that you constantly put up, Chris
These are some of my favorite hobby videos to watch Chris. Great job with the breakdown and financials at the end. Love the transparency. That Griffey is amazing. Is that going up on your ebay store? JWI
I agree, you only need a few hits (10s) to make the entire sub worthwhile. My recent bulk sub of 30 cards, I got 8 PSA 10s. That’s only 26% gem rate. But 4 were Lebron rookies, 2 Steph rookies, 1 Embiid rookie but the biggest winner was a Durant Topps black border rookie that sells for 2K, raw only sells for $20.
I have a lot of gradable 70's basketball but I've decided to adhere to my 10 bucks a card "line in the sand." Yeah I have not sent in anything since OPERATION SŪPERGOUGE started but I think their pricing may mimic the recessionary trough.
Good Lord, are people really asking for seller fees too? Maybe you should be taking our cards, evaluating them for us and submitting them after too! Some times those fees are based on the actual sales price and even your sales price is an estimate. I think you’re doing a great job. No more info needed.
Those music cards are a good investment. I've got the 1991 pro set and some of those ( ozxie. Cher, Ll cool, Lennon, U2, Led Zeppiln, and Lynard Skinard) bring in big bucks.
Glad you had better luck than a lot do. I refuse to use PSA because of upcharging, inconsistency on grading, and the Nat Turner blatant conflict of interest getting 10s on his cards then sends them to the auction house he owns. I'll use SGC if I ever grade anything again but everything I get is PC. I'm a Baseball Card Collector strictly. Thanks for sharing Chris
Do you think there are enough collectors of the set, and the card is so rare, that it doesn't matter to collectors that Rae Carruth is a convicted murderer and served 19 years for his crime? I wouldn't be spending a lot of money for that card, myself.
What do you do with convicted murders cards? You have Ray Carruth I have Henry Ruggs III Rookie Card PSA 10 SP. Well, Ruggs III is under house arrest awaiting trial, but he killed a women and her Dog.
Tell that to the bazillion Luka Prizm 10s, or various other junk wax era stars like Griffey with multiple thousands of gem mint copies. But of course they have to, for every complaint about it, thered be way more if their rare cards were rendered worthless. Essential Credentials do not grade well for one reason, the interior edges. The alignment is rarely perfect with the backside, and when it is and the edges are clean, they will grade high. I've graded dozens of them.
for certain cards yes. but its mostly the inexperienced newbie graders who either know jack shit about the card set or they are high on playing God for the first cpl months, u know the “u aint gonna get a 10 from me” type of newbie graders. The inconsistency is a real problem
That's why graded cards are crap these days because most people cut there slabs up without sending in the original grading sticker to get a better grade. That's why tag is the future
Hi Chris, all the ex2000 cards are graded low because the inner boarders from the inner cut-out are judged for centering AND edges. Nearly impossible to get gems.
Add a gigantic amount of return insurance to the psa order. But first, let the '97 Credential or Essential Credential sit inside an Old book for about a month (to a year) so the BOOK MITES can eat the frayed inner edges of the paper in that dang square! They won't eat the acetate. and unless PSA has an atomic microscope they won't see the little chomp bites on the inside edges! They WILL see the lines of your bic disposable, so guys please don't go that route. Please be patient and let nature take over for a while!
Glad you got a 10 on that Maddux! Those are actually really rare to find, there's an interesting backstory about those from a while back about a guy buying up all of those and then winning a lawsuit against Topps for lying about their print run on the gold refractors
Yes, topps did a couple more print runs or backdoored them just like what Pinnacle did with their 1997 Pinnacle certified Mirror Golds. I would say there are about 150 of them that were made total by topps. (about 120 '97 Pinnacle Certified mirror golds total were made over about four print runs of 30 each. um in case you guys were curious) Still the biggest issue in the community that will always divide brother against brother is whether 'to peel, or not to peel?' That's the big question! I think it's an instant 10 if you peel the plastic off and show the stunning beauty of the card. And getting a ten on an unpeeled card is real tough especially since that peel can start to furl up at the edges or bubble up somewhere or just really distract from the cards look and complicate the grading of the surface.
This type of mindset is what many submitters have, and the problem with that is this how we get to that "junk slab" situation. I'd be more inclined to say if a 9 would add a good deal to the value, then it would be worth it. Think if it this way, sell for 10 today or maybe 20 in 2 months in a 9. That's hoping the card hasn't dropped in the 2 months you wait. That's how I would need to look at grading to be worth it.
Hey Chris, wondering if you have any thoughts about the quality of PSA grading currently. I've submitted cards that I would estimate are coming in 2-3 grades lower than I would expect. I'm looking at some cards with great centering, corners, edges, no surface issues, coming back as a 6. Also seeing issues with autograph cards. 9/10 autos I sent it came back as either a 8 or a 9. The non-auto cards I sent in, 35/41 came back as 10s. I also saw a card come back as a PSA 1 (excellent centering and edges but with some surface creases. Definitely wasn't an 8,9,10) but certainly should have been a 5 or a 6. Any thoughts?
you be shocked. theres a market for almost anyone. not sure who would buy the Rae cards though, hes a convicted killer. I am thinking he is investing for 10-20 years from now
I know people always claim PSA does pop control on cards, but I truly believe they purposely look to give lower grades on 90s Inserts like PMGs and Essential credentials. Obviously they aren't going to give an almost perfect card a 4 or something extreme, but when it has a little damage and would normally deserve say an 8 or 7, they seem to always round down and hit it with a 6 or 5. You never get that bump up like you would on a more modern card.
While they definitely use population control software a lot of it just depends on which grader gets your cards. They have a ton of people grading and a lot of them are part time, or college kids. You dont have a high percentage of people grading for psa that are doing it as a career, its just a low paying job for them. Not exactly a recipe for consistency.
PSA use to be pretty predictable on their grading. Today it’s a crap shoot. I personally believe there policies have changed to keep “10” pop reports low to keep people submitting cards.
Great content as always. I think it’s important to also factor in your fees paid and eventual expected tax one will pay. This is first year many casual collectors like myself will get hit with a 1099 from eBay. I’ve been accounting meticulously, but I imagine many are not and will be disappointed come tax season.
when you were like "this is a rae carruth card...i dont really know how to explain..." i was like oh god where is this going??? but you were just talking about the grading process.
These are some of my favorite video from you. Love seeing what you decide to submit. And see how your projection on the grade pans out. And thank you for answering what I’m sure a lot of people were wondering regarding if you do voiceover on the video lol. I thought that’s what was happening but wasn’t sure 😂
What do think of the theory that PSA grades modern and/or low value cards easier to encourage more people to grade and then grades high value and/or vintage cards tougher? Also, maybe newer low value cards are assigned to newer graders who are more lax. Or it may simply be easier to find more newer gem mint cards.
I like to imagine an alternate audio version of this where you just MF PSA for the poor grades and that’s why you have to go back and do voiceover 😂 Anyway, love the content!
That's stupid and destroys the vaule unless he sends in his cut graded tag to remove off pop report. That's why I don't care about graded cards so many people crack same card to get same grade without removing from pop report lol. Bunch ah bums
The big thing on that card is to check the hologram on the back. They are often off center or even missing part of the diamond. Makes getting a 10 extremely difficult.
I've also reacted to the PSA clampdown on high grades by scrutinizing submissions more tightly, but don't discount the fact that the grader you get is still the biggest influence. To that point, I sent two orders of 1990 Marvel Universe cards to PSA all from the same purchase and one order came back 8s,9s and a few 10s and the other order came back mostly 10s and the rest 9s. Very frustrating fact of grading.
Grading a Carruth you Savage. I get going for low pop count cards only if theres decent demand but with the downtrending im not sure whats going to move anymore. Stay away from womens sports it will tank you.

I feel like in an earlier video you had essential credentials that had the same problem. Oh you just mentioned it lol. Yeah it's crazy, what is wrong!?
Thanks to you, now I write down my expected grades before sending in every order now as well. Wow, amazing Ahsoka Tano! Can’t believe it got a 7. and perfect timing on getting your soccer cards back for the World Cup! I’d be interested in one of your Posey PSA 10s and the 2016 Kane Silver Prizm PSA 9 if you’d be willing to move them. Thanks
Man..... i figured you would know by now to send your thick cards to bgs or sgc... seriously!! Make us a video..crack those and send.. we would love to see
Thanks! Man I just got my Posey back - 10! not bad for a card sitting in a box for since opened - cost was about $0.10 - eureka! Appreciate the detail on your revel. ? - were the Trump cards in the holders crooked? Have a great one and always look when crossing the street!
Chris, there's another utuber that shows his submits from psa. if he disagrees, he'll break them out and send them into SGC. I've seen him get the bump up in grades. why don't u try 1 of those psa 7.
Nice return man, usually I slam PSA for their inconsistency and other issues. BUT, to give them some props, they have NOT been up charging me on recent returns, and that is cool by me, thanks to them! Nice mix of fun cards here, the Essential Credentials is a head scratcher…
I need all of you to flog me, beat me into submission for a really dumb move I made. I WAY over paid for a card on Pristine Auction last night. I feel so stupid. Remember to always do comps on a card you like. I took a chance on a card that I liked and then looked at comps afterward and now realize just how bad the deal was value-wise. Ughh...
6:15 man, Hoop Dreams was a fantastic movie

Thanks Chris. I have a very similar card of Brittany with a swatch attached right to the front.
I didn't see a refractor line on the '96 select certified Ripken! Crack it out and submit again and pay with more higher return insurance and it may come back a 10! Do you know why and when psa stopped doing the .5 grades? Never see it anymore
They still do it but they just very rarely give them out
Rae Carruth is an interesting choice for a sub, even if it is a tough parallel.
I was thinking the same thing. Any card of that POS will not hold any value whatsoever. Why even spend the $18 to get it graded? Looking to post that card at an online company -- like COMC -- hoping that a set builder needs it??

How about some Aaron Hernandez cards
@@jimc.goodfellas sure, Aaron Hernandez didn’t kill any pregnant women. Happy collecting.

Very sorry to hear that. I dont think there is much you can do, as PSA will not give explanations as to why cards got the score they got.

I have a amazing greats Mcgwire /250 that I bought at my LCS back in 98. I can only hope it's worth as much as I paid back then.
The Aaron Donald card is a rough grade. Hold it for about 8 years and sell it when he becomes a first ballot HOF.
That Rae Carruth mention seemed a little too casual.. Did you get that in a lot with Aaron Hernandez and Darren Sharper cards?
😂

Mirror Blue cal is /45. Easily 500-1000
Oooh nice! Not sure why I was thinking /60 or /90

💩 Nat Turner wants Quotas for his company policy - his PSA Graders hit their Quotas. PSA is Bad. SGC is MUCH better at Grading. 💯
How poorly those first two cards are holdered is embarrassing. I don't get PSA's quality control sometimes.
Cards from 2006....PSA finally got them back to you. :)
I guess you did okay. Saw totals at the end
What do you do with convicted murders cards? You have Ray Carruth I have Henry Ruggs III Rookie Card PSA 10 SP.

Was that Ike Hilliard in PWCC’s weekly auction? I won it but won’t get it because of an outage. If it’s yours, will be re-motivated to win again
Thanks
Have you tried sending any of the Essential Credentials to SGC? I'd be curious to see if they come back with more 9s
I haven’t but I might try that
That Hoop Screams was a huge hit 😳
Man..... i figured you would know by now to send your thick cards to bgs or sgc...
Yeah the trump cards were crooked which is definitely annoying. Congrats on your Posey!
@@collectorinvestordealer Thanks! Liked the new intro picture
Chris, there's another utuber that shows his submits from psa. if he disagrees, he'll break them out and send them into SGC. I've seen him get the bump up in grades. why don't u try 1 of those psa 7.
I do that occasionally as well
Nice return man, usually I slam PSA for their inconsistency and other issues. BUT, to give them some props, they have NOT been up charging me on recent returns, and that is cool by me, thanks to them! Nice mix of fun cards here, the Essential Credentials is a head scratcher…
Same. I rarely get up charged even in some obvious cases.
Please get more complicated with the added value section :)
Why do you call 2018 and 2015 early messis haha....2004 to 2007 is early imo
Psa is a freak show
I need all of you to flog me, beat me into submission for a really dumb move I made. I WAY over paid for a card on Pristine Auction last night. I feel so stupid. Remember to always do comps on a card you like. I took a chance on a card that I liked and then looked at comps afterward and now realize just how bad the deal was value-wise. Ughh...
I’ve done something similar dozens of times. It’s all part of the game :)
@@collectorinvestordealer Thanks Chris, to hear from you eases the pain, lol.
Wow, you got beaten up!!
Your not missing anything Chris psa grading sucks so inconsistent ,same thing just happened to me ,I wish people would wake up
