Or be smarter and just get 2 1TB HDD for less the price probably coming up to $100 for both so now $300 and the ram doesn't cost anything but at least $50-70 dollars and you're only allowed 16gb anyways on a MacBook so total $370 for a 10 year old MacBook that works way better than a $500 Windows laptop, $400 Chromebook depending on the size, and over $900 New MacBook depending on the size. Plus the cover doesn't look too bad which is another $5 if you wanna cover the scratches and the keyboard keys replacement probably $20 or less. So running you an estimate of $395. I love how user-service friendly those unibody MacBooks are (at my computer tech job I recently swapped the hard drives in a bunch of them with blank ones I installed the Mac OS onto for resell). But since it's still 11 years old and cannot run the new Mac operating systems, I plan to buy a 13" Touch Bar MacBook Pro soon (Intel version, as I'm not fully ready to jump into Apple's M1-series Macs yet) but still hold onto the 2009 MacBook for running older 32-bit apps on and for burning DVDs of home movies and such. My main computer currently is a 2012 quad-core i5 Mac Mini, upgraded with a 960 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and for optical discs I have an LG external Blu-Ray burner hooked up to it :P
Andre Boccaccio I got a dead 2011 MacBook Pro for free from my local public school. Spent 70 bucks on a 256GB ssd, and modified the PRAM to disable the dead AMD GPU, I gave it to my mom and she loves it. An i7 2nd gen and 8gb of ram are way more then enough for what she does

I love this. I done something similar with mine - a mid 2012 - I got it for free broken, and fixed it. Apple said it only supported 8gig of RAM, but it blatantly takes 16. With that, and an SSD it is completely usable, even running some heavy stuff, video editing etc. As snappy as a brand new all singing, all dancing mac? Nope, but fast enough - and without the huge price tag lol
Austin, I am watching this on my MacBook Pro 2009 with a new battery and a 250GB SSD. This is the first time since 2009 you are reviewing something I use!
Mine is a 2010 macbook pro with 10gb of ram but only a 128gb ssd, so close lmao. Love how these older mac machines actually had really easy to do upgradability.
This is what I did with my late 2008 MacBook that I bought new. The RAM upgrade from 2 to 8 GB made the biggest difference. I recently added a SSD (only 180GB, but free). It works very well and I am very impressed with it!
those old black macbooks could use SSDs and up to 4GB of ram, but it's all kind of pointless because they got cut off at Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and the early 2006 model got cut off at 10.6 Snow Leopard
Hey you should put an SSD, 4GB of ram, and Linux, and there you go, a badass looking linux machine. With Linux you could probably do basic things like day to day web browsing and school work, except it’ll be more modern than the macOS it’s stuck on.
Picking up older laptops like this MacBook is a real bang for your buck! Last year, I picked up a Dell Latitude E6420 for $300 Refurbished, and that machine is a powerhouse still today. I put in a Samsung 850 Evo and that machine is a pleasure to use with its Core i5 2540m, 4GB of RAM, and the aforementioned SSD. It performs way better than Brand New laptops with a similar price tag.
Exactly, I actually bought a broken Dell e6440 with a bad motherboard, I just replaced the board, added 8gb of ram and an ssd and it went from being a dead 70 dollar machine to a $200 monster. I can very easily edit in premier and have 2 billions tabs open while coding for school wayyyyyy better than buying a 200 dollar new laptop.
Where are you getting the dell? Mine was 125 along with hundreds of others similar to it and it had a 3350m and 4gb of ram. Ebay is absolutly flooded with it.
jashelps I purchased mine from a local computer shop. I knew it was more than what they go for on Amazon and eBay, but the store I purchased it from offers a lifetime warranty on the computers they sell, and are very helpful if something goes wrong with the system or will install components for free as long as I pay for the parts.
Yep. Modern userfeel upgrades have been mostly in the random IO of an SSD, and macOS post Snow Leopard really seems to hate rust drives more than most OSs. Had the 2010 MacBook in the family until this year and with an SSD and maxed RAM it felt perfectly fine for day to day web browsing and Office. The most missed modernity's were more in the screen and battery life.
I know that feel man. I upgraded my 2010 MBP with an SSD, put the original Toshiba HDD in the optical drive slot and made them a hybrid drive. Then 16GB of RAM off eBay for $30 gave it the capability to run basically infinite Chrome tabs. Had to replace the keyboard due to water damage last year but parts were cheap and the process was a lot of fun. I'm going to miss this upgradability when I have to let go of this gem.
Did the same to my 2011 MBP - 250gb SSD, HDD in optical drive and 16gb RAM and it ran a treat. BUT I just upgraded to a 2016 MBP w/ touch bar and it is soooooooooooooooo much better. The weight savings and battery life just absolutely kill it!
I don't see a cost analysis for all of your upgrades. I know the ram is around $70, the battery is probably $70, and those drives are around $280. So your around $700-750. Aren't you dipping into the newer MacBook? Pretty sure you can get a used 2012 MacBook pro for around $800
I actually did this with a 2009 MBPro and I'm still very happy with it! I even added windows via bootcamp and it runs most games up to 2012 pretty decent.
Hey Austin, I was wondering if you could update the description with the links to the replacement parts you got! I got that same computer sitting back at home and, although I have upgraded its ram to 8GB, I think it would still be cool to update the hard drive with SSD and even the keyboard with those stealthy black keys! Awesome video man, very nicely done!
I used that guide to upgrade my 2010 MacBook to boot from an SSD (I used a Data Doubler to install a bigger hd I had laying around to just store media). It makes a world of difference! Boot time was cut in half vs booting from the stock hd! Remember you'll need a sata to USB cable, they're cheap though. When I was cloning to the SSD, the SSD had an error message but I just tried again and it worked like a charm!
Always disconnect the battery from your laptops when working on them! just had to say that...dont know if you read these comments...but yeah man. I don't know why you'd say that. just in case . ya know? I'm sure my fellow technicians will agree.
Jordan Howell you mean every laptop or only on this video? The risk is if the power suddenly go out it will damage the hardware And nowadays laptop have discharge system so instead of charging the battery when reaching 90and above it will act like power brick (you can see it says not charged)
@@AppleReviews if you have a macbook pro and you have the A.C adapter plugged in and remove the battery while it's on, the cpu prefomance will cut down in half.
BH4x0r No, it dosent. This 10 year old machine looks better than most pc’s that come out today. People hate on apple, but nobody says they have bad design.
Bror Alwin Sagstuen most of their shit looks the same... its getting old af who wants some piece of trash in 2018 when it nearly looks the same as some shit from 10 years ago, i don't get that. that + most of their shit costs 2x more than its supposed to either way
They aren't meant to change all the time. Change over refinement defeats the purpose of making something good into something great. You don't exactly manage that by radically changing it every single year. When you pick a design and stick with it, it makes it easy to improve and make it better for the current day and the future. Think about it this way. If you purchase something that's great and does everything that you need it to do with no fuss, what's the point of changing it? Let's not forget the things that can inevitably stop working or things that are flat out inconvenient for you now where the previous thing was perfect for you. Clearly you don't understand the concept and need to do a little more thinking/research to figure this out. Not all change is good, frankly most change is negative in one way or another.
I have the exact same MacBook for university. I‘ve upgraded just from 4gb Ram to 8gb of ram! (Yes it works.) and replaced the hdd with a Samsung 500 GB SSD. It works just fine.
i actually really love my 2010 macbook and was wondering if i could replace the stuff inside to "upgrade" it. this video helps a lot now that i have the knowledge that i'm able to!
I was going to buy a new macbook but with the student loan and all, I decided to upgrade my 2011 macbook pro's HDD to an SSD. It had a 2.5 ghz processor installed by default, so it's running nicely. Considering the price of a new macbook, upgrading the old one was definitely a better idea.
Good vid. One of my favorite hobbies is upgrading older computers for friends and family. Only other thing I would've done is reapply the thermal paste. Especially on older Macs were the factory paste is old and cheap

I still need to get one of these models some day and I plan to give it many upgrades! I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that has a similar set of upgrades, just with more ram and better and higher capacity SSD’s.
I bought one of these as a machine to force me to focus, and not dossing about the internet. I was shocked to find it just does everything really well. Even with the old spinny drive, you know what? I could use it all night for everything I’d normally do for fun, as well as Office being nil problem to it. These are a nice deal particularly since they scratch, instead of denting like ally. Really nice video. Much enjoying Austin’s stuff.
I live in England and we have our tax included in prices so I just wanted to ask when you say something like $200 laptop do you mean including tax or not?
I did this with my 13 inch mid2010 and it's working great! after the last os upgrade it became unbearably slow, it wasn't even Sierra. good thing we kept it around. I'm surprised how easy it was to do. everything inside is straight forward. I got 1t Kingston kc600 and 8gb ram(almost all guides just mention 4gb, hmm). I'm so happy right now. how did you replace the keys??? can you make it backlit? how do you replace the speakers? better yet can you use the connector to the speakers as a power source for the backlight? thanks!
You can buy any modern ssd to get all Speed out of this device, its not Important to take an expensive one (or better two) like Austin... Even the cheapest one on the market are enough to push the possible Speed to the Limit (wich is the mainboard in this case)...

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, and up until a few days ago, it was the only computer I owned. I work as a video editor, so as you can imagine, that's pretty crazy. It even handled 4K footage ok if I made proxies. If my new computer lasts even half as long, I'll be really happy.
These are my favorite kind of computer mods. I've done this exact same thing to man Mac's and am always happy with the result. Upped a 2012 Mac Mini from 4 GB to 16 GB RAM... daily computer still in January 2019.
MultimediaLucario it was a powerful laptop back then (it’s core 2 Duo was the i5/i7 back then ) , and also being able to put 16GB DDR3 back then in 2009 costed a lot of money like 500€+ and was very superior
@@armeniancrusader301 omg! I didn't knew.... I already placed 8gb RAM... did it improve performance? by how much? doesn't it have a max something that even if you put 32gb it will only work on 8 or 16gb? if adding another 8gb is worth it, I might swap the 2x4gb ram to 2x8gb. thanks!
I still use my early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro. I upgraded it with 8 GB of RAM and a SSD a couple of years ago. It still works perfectly and is great for browsing, media consumption, office work and some light photo editing.
Great build idea! I’ve been considering if I want to invest money in my aluminum unibody MacBook from about 2009. I use adobe CS5 on occasion and have the master collection and I hear it won’t run on late OS upgrades so I’ve not upgraded. I just can’t justify buying a new MacBook for now.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro. What you failed to mention is that the computer only supports SATA2 so your SSD will run at drastically reduced speeds...
While tru the speed difference isn't all that drastic, still better than any HDD anyways.
SATA3 has twice the bandwidth as SATA2....
Jarl Ballin' However you have to remember how much of that bandwidth actually gets used especially for a laptop this old with only a core2duo.
I can tell you from experience, the SATA2 bottlenecks the SSD's speed....
Jarl Ballin' yes it will bottleneck, even w/ a core2duo
Watching this on my iPad, shaking my head at my sad late 2009 MacBook sitting right next to it.
I'm addicted to this video
upgrades alone cost 300
MP Dope I bought a 2012 MacBook Air (used) with an i7@2.00Ghz, 250SSD, for $500
Andre Boccaccio I got a dead 2011 MacBook Pro for free from my local public school. Spent 70 bucks on a 256GB ssd, and modified the PRAM to disable the dead AMD GPU, I gave it to my mom and she loves it. An i7 2nd gen and 8gb of ram are way more then enough for what she does
A TB of SSD storage is pricey isn’t it?
Toby Cowles nice
Tech Which core 2 duo is it?
And i want upgrade my cpu from 2007 Pentium to core 2 duo.. I'm just confused about the version of it.
I found a 3.33ghz E8500. Is it legit?
My pc is from (2007)
Also which is better core 2 quad 3.13 ghz Q9600 or core 2 core 3.33 ghz E8500?
Those upgrades probably cost more than the macbook itself lol
they do
I love this.
Do u remember what it cost for all the upgrades?
Hahah why do you need 16gb of ram on a core 2 duo??
Thank you. I plan on doing this to a MacBook I’m getting for $90. I just need something to do light audio engineering for music

Austin, I am watching this on my MacBook Pro 2009 with a new battery and a 250GB SSD. This is the first time since 2009 you are reviewing something I use!
Same. But mine is a 2010 with 10 gb ram and the same ssd
Mine is a 2010 macbook pro with 10gb of ram but only a 128gb ssd, so close lmao. Love how these older mac machines actually had really easy to do upgradability.
Harley Strain same
I have the same mac and I want to upgrade it, can you tell me do I need an adapter for the ssd?
Keno Brt no
This is what I did with my late 2008 MacBook that I bought new. The RAM upgrade from 2 to 8 GB made the biggest difference. I recently added a SSD (only 180GB, but free). It works very well and I am very impressed with it!
I'll take that over mine any day
I have a 2006 black MacBook 😢
If you upgrade, Keep your 06 black in good condition, worth alot
I loved my black MacBook! Wish I would've kept it just to see how far I could upgrade.
those old black macbooks could use SSDs and up to 4GB of ram, but it's all kind of pointless because they got cut off at Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and the early 2006 model got cut off at 10.6 Snow Leopard
Hey you should put an SSD, 4GB of ram, and Linux, and there you go, a badass looking linux machine. With Linux you could probably do basic things like day to day web browsing and school work, except it’ll be more modern than the macOS it’s stuck on.
Gavin Larson I had a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430C. *Had*
I damaged that laptop and now I don't have a laptop
Fair enough.
It´s the perfect laptop for DJ´s just for preparing their tracks in rekordbox!
and as a dj you can store your whole music library on it because of the 1tb ssd
The weight savings and battery life just absolutely kill it!
..... this is the most RUclips-like comment ever
Most modern OSes hate 5400 RPM drives. Windows 10 runs like crap on those.
tipoomaster do you recommend I buy this MacBook or an 2007 imac?
I don't see a cost analysis for all of your upgrades. I know the ram is around $70, the battery is probably $70, and those drives are around $280. So your around $700-750. Aren't you dipping into the newer MacBook? Pretty sure you can get a used 2012 MacBook pro for around $800
It is 280$ if you drop the extra SSD the macbook uses SATA II so raid is useless as the ssd alone isn't fully utilized anyways
If you drop the ssd it only ends up being $130...
if you buy a used laptop, i don't see the problem of buying used ram, and used ram is kinda cheap.
you can get 8gb of ram for 40$ or less
That 2009 MacBook is faster than my 2012/2013 Toshiba PC. OOF.
The poly carbonated macbook from 2009 is my favorite and my dream mac until now.
I still have this model and it works like it's new basically. Awesome mac!
I agree.
Gabriele Mucci do you recommend I get this MacBook or an 2007 imac which works well?
I use it for taking notes in school, it works fine
I actually did this with a 2009 MBPro and I'm still very happy with it! I even added windows via bootcamp and it runs most games up to 2012 pretty decent.
Hey Austin, I was wondering if you could update the description with the links to the replacement parts you got! I got that same computer sitting back at home and, although I have upgraded its ram to 8GB, I think it would still be cool to update the hard drive with SSD and even the keyboard with those stealthy black keys! Awesome video man, very nicely done!
mac sales sells macbook upgrades ect. So they are your best bet
I don't know why you'd say that. just in case . ya know? I'm sure my fellow technicians will agree.
uhhhhh... unplug the battery from the socket? Or with the most recent MacBooks sliding a card under the motherboard?
Jordan Howell you mean every laptop or only on this video?
The risk is if the power suddenly go out it will damage the hardware
And nowadays laptop have discharge system so instead of charging the battery when reaching 90and above it will act like power brick (you can see it says not charged)
Wouldn't you be fine if you just shut down the laptop to upgrade the HDD/SSD??
Tech101 off course, if you shut down the laptop properly, you can do anything lol as long you can do it lol that includes change sdd/HDD and ram

that + most of their shit costs 2x more than its supposed to either way
They aren't meant to change all the time.
ThunderMasterMind But it isint great, it’s meh.
I have a mac exactly like that bone stock with 2gb of ram and it's incredibly slow but it's the only computer I have. This video helped a lot thanks

I could use it all night for everything I’d normally do for fun, as well as Office being nil problem to it. These are a nice deal particularly since they scratch, instead of denting like ally.
