10 years later and it still looks way better than most laptops from today.
MacBook: 1TB SSD, Core 2Duo
MacOS: *CONFUSED SCREAMING*

Hahaha lol
MAC high Sierra OS with patch to fool it into thinking it’s post 2012 of course,...otherwise no cigar
well now hes in mac heaven
Wrrrrrrry
I love how Final Cut is more expensive than the MacBook
you can pirate it for free
Axem YT fr?
@@DARTbeats You can pirate any piece of software or game for free.
Nice grammar
Or get the pro apps for education bundle with it in and Logic Pro x for £ 180
Well it’s no longer a $200 MacBook lol
Those ssds should cost a few hundred dollars in itself.
NebTheDev YT idk if you’re living under a rock but, ssds aren’t that expensive anymore
its basically a $200 display screen lol
@Derek Frampton hmm, some chinese ssd have 320go for 50€, and there are really good disk (not better than WD, but better than HDD)
Yea kinda pointless when you can get 2014-15 mbook pros for 600$ used...
You should build the ultimate iPod classic

Haha I got one of those from my school for $40 bc they thought it was broken, but I fixed it and it works great. :)
good to hear
I got a broken 2015 MacBook Air from my school because I fix laptops and they didn't need it anymore. Just needed a new battery and it runs great.
@@RyBird wait so like students can ask the school for broken laptops and they're fine with giving it away?
@@deadalpeca8099 No, they were for a Nazerine Mission trip to Guatemala to help build houses for people. We had too many donated by the school so we couldn't bring all of them with us.
@@RyBird hmm interesting
For that 650 dollars after upgrade, u can probably get an MacBook Air 2017 base model on black fridays!
Yeah. But you can't upgrade the new MacBook and pretty sure this MacBook will be faster than any Mac books for the next 10 years
@@JustinAbroad whats the last macbook that could be upgraded?
@@catgarcia2238 I believe that would be the 2013 Macbook Pro.
@@JustinAbroad no it wont the base model air now is faster than this
@@JustinAbroad He just upgraded the ssd not the CPU, the air has a core i5 but this has a core 2 duo
This was pretty cool to see. I forget that older MacBooks are this easy to get into. Great stuff Austin!
What are you doing here, Knuckles? Lol
xX_SpeedyScout_Xx I'm subscribed to Austin's channel.

Which core 2 duo is it?
And i want upgrade my cpu from 2007 Pentium to core 2 duo.. I'm just confused about the version of it.
I found a 3.33ghz E8500. Is it legit?
My pc is from (2007)
They used to be easy, but the good old times are over... unfortunately.
Who else just watches the video but never "builds" anything.....😂😂😂
Samar Nawaz you should try it out! Don't build everything they show of course, parts are expensive, but every now and then try to do something. Really rewarding! I would recommend modding a gameboy or something like that for a start. They're easy to open and there are a lot of ideas and tutorials online you can use. Sadly a lot of the dedicated websites with parts for them is in USA or China, so if you live in EU you will have to wait alot to get parts.
That was me until just last week. I had an old, half-dead 2008 HP6730b laptop with Windows XP lying around the house and while I was able to make it somewhat usable again by installing Puppy Linux (Tahr Pup, I think) on it last December, this video inspired me to replace the original hard drive with a WD (Green) 240GB SSD. With the latest version of Puppy Linux, I've got a great desktop replacement that actually matches my 2014 MacBook Air.
Well, not quite - they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but it's pretty close.
If you know what you're doing, stuff like this can be pretty easy and fun, and you'll feel a sense of achievement by being able to breathe new life back into an old computer.
would like to do this kinda stuff to computers but cant cuz like im 11 and i dont know how also i dont think my mom and dad would even let me open a laptop or even buy parts for it
Me! I find it very relaxing and interesting.

We need more practical tips like this to fight against Apple's planned obsolescence. There are small home offices that as units of older Macs which can actually revived and improved, thus saving costs. I highly appreciate your effort to create this video tutorial.
Apple products last the longest. Try to find a 9 year old laptop that performs as well as they do.
“Planned obsolescence” 😭
ThinkSink , the planned obsolescence is referred to the now-on-the-shelves Apple computers, which are impossible to barely open, neither try to upgrade them: after two years new models ARE obsolete.
I use Apple since 1984, and you can trust me.
briccimn the MacBook Air is sealed and hard to repair but it’s still running strong a decade after its inception.
briccimn but they are supported for longer and they have the best build quality, so you couldn’t break it even you tried to. Sure they may not be used upgradable, but macOS is supported and optimised for older machines, so you wouldn’t run into any problems down the line.

1. Buys $200 laptop
2. Spends another $600 on it
3. ???
4. 10 year old $800 dollar laptop lmao
Zack was it really 600?
Or be smarter and just get 2 1TB HDD for less the price probably coming up to $100 for both so now $300 and the ram doesn't cost anything but at least $50-70 dollars and you're only allowed 16gb anyways on a MacBook so total $370 for a 10 year old MacBook that works way better than a $500 Windows laptop, $400 Chromebook depending on the size, and over $900 New MacBook depending on the size. Plus the cover doesn't look too bad which is another $5 if you wanna cover the scratches and the keyboard keys replacement probably $20 or less. So running you an estimate of $395. Again only an estimate you could get certain things cheaper or even settle with 2 500gb HDD which is even cheaper. It's up to you. But you can make this laptop work as a budget winner and would work better than modern day laptops that again are way overpriced.
Made the calculations it is less than 300$ for a 500GB ssd a new battery and a new keyboard and a new cover and 200$ for the macbook and that is 450$-500$ and it is way better than alot of laptops at that price range and you can sell the parts you swapped out and make a few bucks out of it [30 max]
PowerL1N3 « work better than modern day laptops » are you dumb ? How can a Core2Duo with an HDD (yes in raid with your configuration but speed for multiples files is waaaaay slower than a single SSD) can compete with a core i3/i5 with SSD starting at 600 bucks ?
Cyrille CF Dude, watch who you call a dumbass before reading into the text correctly. I was definitely talking about it being a better performing laptop in this day and age FOR THE BUDGET! Not for overall performance!
It is so cool to see an apple product that is upgradable!!
Pooch Playz no, an is correct.
Jerico Tamayo well, I’d say if it’s newer and unibody. Unupgradable. Moderate (time-wise) things like Mac Mini and Mac Pro are still upgradable. New things like the 2018 Mac Pro (Coming later this year) will be upgradable.
Yes, I wish they had an alternative MacBook Pro model that had more upgradeable parts.
This was actually one of your best videos. It was nice seeing you give positive remarks on something that will help out slot of people.
I dug up my old MacBook and did this and I even downloaded an intel i11 and some more ram

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that is still good for light work and traveling, but not for main use. I upgraded it with 16GB of DDR3 from 4GB which is total overkill for it, and a 240GB SSD and that brought it back from the dead. It went from unusable to generally slow, but kind of snappy. If the RAM had been soldered on and the storage non-upgradable, it would have been retired by now. So yeah, planned obsolescence is a thing.
QuantumBraced I bought a 2012 MacBook Air (used) with an i7@2.00Ghz, 250SSD, for $500
Andre Boccaccio I bought a 2015 MacBook air 13" for 200 lol
is it 15 inch?
No, 13"
daam i could have installed 16 gb too then, though i read it wasn't supported so i went for 8gb :( upgraded a a year and a half ago and this 8 year old computer regained life lol
This seems like a great option for college students. Looks like fun for tinkerers too!
pretty sure there are way better options if you're tight on budget and are in college haha
2nd hand MacBooks are pretty good options for students. I got a maxed out 2012 MBP for $500.

i actually really love my 2010 macbook and was wondering if i could replace the stuff inside to "upgrade" it. this video helps a lot now that i have the knowledge that i'm able to!
Austin, great video, can you help direct me to a video on how to build a MacBook best suited for Final Cut Pro (or video editing?)
The poly carbonated macbook from 2009 is my favorite and my dream mac until now.
Watching this on my iPad, shaking my head at my sad late 2009 MacBook sitting right next to it.
I actually did this with a 2009 MBPro and I'm still very happy with it! I even added windows via bootcamp and it runs most games up to 2012 pretty decent.
Really Cool and looks very useable even though old! Great Job Austin!
Yep. Modern userfeel upgrades have been mostly in the random IO of an SSD, and macOS post Snow Leopard really seems to hate rust drives more than most OSs. Had the 2010 MacBook in the family until this year and with an SSD and maxed RAM it felt perfectly fine for day to day web browsing and Office. The most missed modernity's were more in the screen and battery life.
I know that feel man.
I upgraded my 2010 MBP with an SSD, put the original Toshiba HDD in the optical drive slot and made them a hybrid drive. Then 16GB of RAM off eBay for $30 gave it the capability to run basically infinite Chrome tabs. Had to replace the keyboard due to water damage last year but parts were cheap and the process was a lot of fun. I'm going to miss this upgradability when I have to let go of this gem.
Did the same to my 2011 MBP - 250gb SSD, HDD in optical drive and 16gb RAM and it ran a treat. BUT I just upgraded to a 2016 MBP w/ touch bar and it is soooooooooooooooo much better. The weight savings and battery life just absolutely kill it!
..... this is the most RUclips-like comment ever
Most modern OSes hate 5400 RPM drives. Windows 10 runs like crap on those.
tipoomaster do you recommend I buy this MacBook or an 2007 imac?
MacBook-$200
SSDs(2)-$300
Battery-$30
Keyboard-$20
Shell-$20
Plus shipping and other costs totals to about $600. Not a bad value but I also feel like you could buy a lot of modern laptop for $600
Julian Fairfax mmmm probably another like $60
Leggo0 or BUILD A FUCKING PC
remember that IOS needs specific RAM. probably more than $60
Terrible value, you can get a Lenovo ultra book with a newer quad core i5 or i7 with better specs for the same price
I’ve had one of these sitting in my drawer forever and now I think I might breathe some life back into it again
Pretty cool! I have a late 2009 MacBook as well; bought it for a little under $100 more than three years ago as it didn't come with a hard drive or power adapter cable (the latter of which I already had from an older failing MacBook), and I upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and installed a 256 GB SSD into it, but I kept the SuperDrive intact as I can still appreciate having an optical disc drive. I love how user-service friendly those unibody MacBooks are (at my computer tech job I recently swapped the hard drives in a bunch of them with blank ones I installed the Mac OS onto for resell). But since it's still 11 years old and cannot run the new Mac operating systems, I plan to buy a 13" Touch Bar MacBook Pro soon (Intel version, as I'm not fully ready to jump into Apple's M1-series Macs yet) but still hold onto the 2009 MacBook for running older 32-bit apps on and for burning DVDs of home movies and such.
My main computer currently is a 2012 quad-core i5 Mac Mini, upgraded with a 960 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and for optical discs I have an LG external Blu-Ray burner hooked up to it :P
Maybe you should try doing a giveaway of this custom MacBook

Good vid. One of my favorite hobbies is upgrading older computers for friends and family. Only other thing I would've done is reapply the thermal paste. Especially on older Macs were the factory paste is old and cheap
Nice recycling! Thanks for the vid. I did the same, minus the second HD, with you Mid 2010 MB. It runs great. I just wish I could play 4k video!
I have a 2009 Macbook Pro. What you failed to mention is that the computer only supports SATA2 so your SSD will run at drastically reduced speeds...
While tru the speed difference isn't all that drastic, still better than any HDD anyways.
SATA3 has twice the bandwidth as SATA2....
Jarl Ballin' However you have to remember how much of that bandwidth actually gets used especially for a laptop this old with only a core2duo.
I can tell you from experience, the SATA2 bottlenecks the SSD's speed....
Jarl Ballin' yes it will bottleneck, even w/ a core2duo

I agree.

I use it for taking notes in school, it works fine
Hey Austin, I was wondering if you could update the description with the links to the replacement parts you got! I got that same computer sitting back at home and, although I have upgraded its ram to 8GB, I think it would still be cool to update the hard drive with SSD and even the keyboard with those stealthy black keys! Awesome video man, very nicely done!
mac sales sells macbook upgrades ect. So they are your best bet
I used that guide to upgrade my 2010 MacBook to boot from an SSD (I used a Data Doubler to install a bigger hd I had laying around to just store media). It makes a world of difference! Boot time was cut in half vs booting from the stock hd! Remember you'll need a sata to USB cable, they're cheap though. When I was cloning to the SSD, the SSD had an error message but I just tried again and it worked like a charm!
This is what I did with my late 2008 MacBook that I bought new. The RAM upgrade from 2 to 8 GB made the biggest difference. I recently added a SSD (only 180GB, but free). It works very well and I am very impressed with it!
I did this two years ago to my 2009 MBP, shipped with leopard. Today it still runs awesome almost 2019!! Sad you can no longer do this to newer macs :(
upgrades alone cost 300
MP Dope I bought a 2012 MacBook Air (used) with an i7@2.00Ghz, 250SSD, for $500
Andre Boccaccio I got a dead 2011 MacBook Pro for free from my local public school. Spent 70 bucks on a 256GB ssd, and modified the PRAM to disable the dead AMD GPU, I gave it to my mom and she loves it. An i7 2nd gen and 8gb of ram are way more then enough for what she does

I loved my black MacBook! Wish I would've kept it just to see how far I could upgrade.
those old black macbooks could use SSDs and up to 4GB of ram, but it's all kind of pointless because they got cut off at Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and the early 2006 model got cut off at 10.6 Snow Leopard
Hey you should put an SSD, 4GB of ram, and Linux, and there you go, a badass looking linux machine. With Linux you could probably do basic things like day to day web browsing and school work, except it’ll be more modern than the macOS it’s stuck on.
Gavin Larson I had a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430C. *Had*

Definitely go for RAM + SSD upgrades. You'll notice it every moment you're using your computer. RAID is not even remotely necessary.

Great build idea! I’ve been considering if I want to invest money in my aluminum unibody MacBook from about 2009. I use adobe CS5 on occasion and have the master collection and I hear it won’t run on late OS upgrades so I’ve not upgraded. I just can’t justify buying a new MacBook for now.

I plan to do that with mine 2009 Macbook but you have to take the whole Motherboard out.
Im doing this with my 2012 mac as it keeps overheating and switching off
I love this.
I done something similar with mine - a mid 2012 - I got it for free broken, and fixed it.
Apple said it only supported 8gig of RAM, but it blatantly takes 16. With that, and an SSD it is completely usable, even running some heavy stuff, video editing etc.
As snappy as a brand new all singing, all dancing mac? Nope, but fast enough - and without the huge price tag lol
Do u remember what it cost for all the upgrades?
Hahah why do you need 16gb of ram on a core 2 duo??
Thank you. I plan on doing this to a MacBook I’m getting for $90. I just need something to do light audio engineering for music

I bought one of these as a machine to force me to focus, and not dossing about the internet. I was shocked to find it just does everything really well. Even with the old spinny drive, you know what? I could use it all night for everything I’d normally do for fun, as well as Office being nil problem to it. These are a nice deal particularly since they scratch, instead of denting like ally. Really nice video. Much enjoying Austin’s stuff.
Picking up older laptops like this MacBook is a real bang for your buck! Last year, I picked up a Dell Latitude E6420 for $300 Refurbished, and that machine is a powerhouse still today. I put in a Samsung 850 Evo and that machine is a pleasure to use with its Core i5 2540m, 4GB of RAM, and the aforementioned SSD. It performs way better than Brand New laptops with a similar price tag.
Exactly, I actually bought a broken Dell e6440 with a bad motherboard, I just replaced the board, added 8gb of ram and an ssd and it went from being a dead 70 dollar machine to a $200 monster. I can very easily edit in premier and have 2 billions tabs open while coding for school wayyyyyy better than buying a 200 dollar new laptop.
Where are you getting the dell? Mine was 125 along with hundreds of others similar to it and it had a 3350m and 4gb of ram. Ebay is absolutly flooded with it.
jashelps I purchased mine from a local computer shop. I knew it was more than what they go for on Amazon and eBay, but the store I purchased it from offers a lifetime warranty on the computers they sell, and are very helpful if something goes wrong with the system or will install components for free as long as I pay for the parts.
Fair enough.
you should do one for the mac mini
I did almost exactly everything you did internally. Opted for just one SSD because this era of disk drive is in my opinion the last good non-blu-ray drive and I do use it. I intend to eventually find a casing to make that drive external and toss a 2nd 250GB Evo in for RAID.
These are my favorite kind of videos!!!

Always disconnect the battery from your laptops when working on them! just had to say that...dont know if you read these comments...but yeah man. I don't know why you'd say that. just in case . ya know? I'm sure my fellow technicians will agree.
true - but show me how to disconnect any battery in MacBook after about 2014
My solution is - to keep it ALWAYS charged 100% and only do conditioning it every 1-2 months
uhhhhh... unplug the battery from the socket? Or with the most recent MacBooks sliding a card under the motherboard?
Jordan Howell you mean every laptop or only on this video?
The risk is if the power suddenly go out it will damage the hardware
And nowadays laptop have discharge system so instead of charging the battery when reaching 90and above it will act like power brick (you can see it says not charged)
Wouldn't you be fine if you just shut down the laptop to upgrade the HDD/SSD??
Tech101 off course, if you shut down the laptop properly, you can do anything lol as long you can do it lol that includes change sdd/HDD and ram
Links for the parts would be nice
I enjoyed this video. I watched it sometime back and it inspired me to upgrade my mid-2010 MacBook Pro. I got the computer new when I started college. It got me all the way through college and Then some. I had given up on it because it was getting slow. I watched this and decided to upgrade. I opted for a small 128gb ssd because I didn’t need a lot of storage. Then got the 8gb ram upgrade. It sped the computer up tremendously! It became much more usable. I was using it for a work computer. Now, I will say, for what I was doing I didn’t need maximum performance because my job just required me to get online and use a software that’s online. But speeding up the MacBook made it more pleasant to use. Faster startups and shutdowns. Quicker functions. I didn’t do a battery replacement but kind of wished I did.
So for me, I spend like $150ish maybe a tad under that. $150 vs $1000 for a new MacBook Air was a better option for my needs.
That is so cool! I’m hoping to do something similar to a old desktop that I have but I haven’t cracked it open yet so I’m not sure if it’s completely soldered to the computer itself
I did this with my 13 inch mid2010 and it's working great! after the last os upgrade it became unbearably slow, it wasn't even Sierra. good thing we kept it around. I'm surprised how easy it was to do. everything inside is straight forward. I got 1t Kingston kc600 and 8gb ram(almost all guides just mention 4gb, hmm). I'm so happy right now.
how did you replace the keys??? can you make it backlit? how do you replace the speakers? better yet can you use the connector to the speakers as a power source for the backlight? thanks!
On yours you can put 16gb of ram as long as it has a core2duo inside
What about the keyboard? I have to replace mine
I'm addicted to this video
super smart way. well done!
I've got the same laptop laying around. Maybe I should upgrade it too...
I would. They are great machines
It's worth your time. I have the exact same model, and I use it as my daily driver for just about everything. It's capable of way more than what most people would ever expect of it.
You were actually able to make it look like shit nice
Bror Alwin Sagstuen it looks like garbage by standard like any crapple product.
BH4x0r No, it dosent. This 10 year old machine looks better than most pc’s that come out today. People hate on apple, but nobody says they have bad design.
Bror Alwin Sagstuen most of their shit looks the same... its getting old af
who wants some piece of trash in 2018 when it nearly looks the same as some shit from 10 years ago, i don't get that.
that + most of their shit costs 2x more than its supposed to either way
They aren't meant to change all the time. Change over refinement defeats the purpose of making something good into something great. You don't exactly manage that by radically changing it every single year. When you pick a design and stick with it, it makes it easy to improve and make it better for the current day and the future. Think about it this way. If you purchase something that's great and does everything that you need it to do with no fuss, what's the point of changing it? Let's not forget the things that can inevitably stop working or things that are flat out inconvenient for you now where the previous thing was perfect for you.
Clearly you don't understand the concept and need to do a little more thinking/research to figure this out. Not all change is good, frankly most change is negative in one way or another.
ThunderMasterMind But it isint great, it’s meh.
i actually got one yesterday and today i updated it to high sierra
Did similar on a mid-2010 Mac Book Pro. Added in a 500gb SSD and 16gb of ram. Runs like an new machine.

I don't see a cost analysis for all of your upgrades. I know the ram is around $70, the battery is probably $70, and those drives are around $280. So your around $700-750. Aren't you dipping into the newer MacBook? Pretty sure you can get a used 2012 MacBook pro for around $800
It is 280$ if you drop the extra SSD the macbook uses SATA II so raid is useless as the ssd alone isn't fully utilized anyways
If you drop the ssd it only ends up being $130...
if you buy a used laptop, i don't see the problem of buying used ram, and used ram is kinda cheap.
you can get 8gb of ram for 40$ or less
awesome experiment. perfect computer for simple tasks,
Love your videos Austin

That 2009 MacBook is faster than my 2012/2013 Toshiba PC. OOF.
Which processor?, lol, i have a gaming i7 of 2013, thats my gaming rig till now
@Todd Shavez Mac is very good for browsing and office/school work, I personally own a MacBook Air 2017 with core i5, and an iMac 2013 with fusion drive and core i7, both of my devices seems to be faster in browsing and school work than my gaming PC, Core i7 4770K OC to 4.2 GHz and a GTX 1050ti OC +135 core clock, +300 memory clock, and yes I do video editing on my MacBook or on my iMac on final cut Pro X, both do the work easily even with a 4k 60fps video! I think that premier Pro on windows is a bit hard for me!
P.S I am a 13 yr old student and a youtuber
Subscribed. Most helpful video for buying a $200 A1342 and what to possibly do with it. Much swag.
I’m a windows guy trying out Mac.
Congratulations on 3m!
Guys hey Austin this is
I got 2010 macbook pro 13 added a 128 gb ssd, 8gb of ram and a new battery. Total $280
Does it work with ddr4 ram?
JAMIE THEMCGAMER only ddr3. Up to 16gb
MrBigant18 Total including the MacBook?
Tommy Rosa yup
Tommy Rosa shopped around for used ssd and ram
Really really wished you listed the upgrades in the description so it was easier for people to find and buy them ourselves
This ia why I"m in love with this channel....
I did this exact build except I only did 1 500gb SSD instead of 2
was it a 2.5 inch SSD you used ?
@@jimlivesey5953 yup same one he used in the video
Cool upgrade
(I would have taken the shell off and painted it black too)
How much did you spend on the upgrade????
i more or less did the same thing with a unibody 08 macbook that a friend gave to me. When I received it the battery wouldn't hold a charge and the trackpad wouldn't click. I replaced the battery, maxed the ram, added an SSD and upped it to the latest OS it supported (El Cap) and it works just fine for day to day.
I have one from 2008 and would like to upgrade do you more details on parts used and maybe some tutorials ?
I was expecting for you to replace the optical drive with a Blu-Ray drive instead.
JWproductions same
Can you give me the info on everything you installed
Hey dude any idea what MacBook pro keys he used for the key swap?
Can you please make an updated video on how this Mac is running?
Got a mid 2010 with the 8GB and SSD upgrades already done for 65 dollars this week. Grabbed it because I suck with managing my own money, but honestly... Pretty smooth experience so long as you keep your expectations in check
