8:05 That laptop doesn't even look _that_ thick... Makes me wonder what made people desire thin, fragile machines with poor thermals and shallow keys of 2020s
Just to brag about how thin it is. I think modern devices are too thin. I’d prefer to have a thicker laptop that is upgradable, repairable, and doesn’t kill itself because of heat.
Because the casing for the batteries are sonically welded together, and trying to pry one open will damage the case, and you risk damaging the battery inside, which cause it to explode, and/or catch fire!!
While I never owned the black version, I have the Macbook Early 2008 white edition. I used it for a good while before getting a new device. It's actually possible to swap logic boards with a Macbook 5,2, aka Early-Mid 2009. I swapped them and it now runs El Capitan natively, along with Mojave and even Big Sur with patchers. It's worth it, in my opinion, if you have the time and money to do it. These logic boards usually cost around $30 USD. All of the parts fit in the new logic board except for the SuperDrive, due to an interface change.
Hello from Minnesota! I absolutely love your channel and I'm so happy you finally reviewed a black MacBook!! For some reason this is a computer I am always on the lookout for as I just love the fact that Apple made a black MacBook. Side note: for anyone who owns a TCL tv, the issue seen with the headphone jack in this video is a common problem on those brand tvs! I own a few and this is happened to them on occasion.
Interesting.. I don't necessarily use the headphone jack on my TCL TVs, but that is good to know. I watch your channel too, and love all the retro tech. :) Makes me want to break out the older computers I have and play some older games.
I am still using this with Microsoft Office 2011. I have to say, it opens all my modern big spreadsheets faster than my 2012 on Catalina opens a Numbers spreadsheet! ..and with 4 Gig RAM vs 8 Gig on the 2012 MacBook Pro. I recently upgraded the 2012 with Open GL Patch, installed Ventura on a new SSD disk, and it runs just as well as my wife’s new iMac. I have the Black iBook networked with the MacBook Pro to handle any excel files and PowerPoints in native format. I don’t see the need to pay Microsoft for another licence again! Thanks for the video 😊
I bought this laptop last year, but in white and with a c2d T8100, 4gb of ram, 500gb ssd, with a charger but no battery for $50. the cpu locks itself to low power without a battery so i bought a black battery. the reason i went with the black one was because it was a great deal for a barely used genuine battery, your setup reminds me of it. i was able to install linux on it with no problems but when i wanted to try windows it refused to boot from that usb so if you wanted windows you had to use dvd to install it. but overall a really fascinating laptop to use!
I have one, the 2.4ghz black Macbook. It has 4GB ram and stock 240gb hdd. I powered it on a couple of days ago and it still works fine. It has not been in regular use for over 3 years now.
That audio issue is common, I had that happen on my 2011 13" macbook pro. Usually resolved simply by inserting and removing a headphone jack once or twice to reset the sensor
In the US it came with 2 GB of RAM instead of the standard 1, which is why I got it. There was also only an 80 GB hard drive in the base model, while the black had 160. Surprised the Australian version skimped on the RAM and that there was a 120 GB white version too!
They had this at the same time they released the first unibody MacBook. I ordered the unibody one and the store shipping this black version. I sent it back and got the nice unibody, and its still going strong from 2008!
I got a white macbook in 2009, used it for several years until one of the hinges broke, then I found a non working black macbook on ebay for cheap, and used the screen/lid on my white macbook to fix it, kinda looked cool, a ying-yang look having a black top on a white bottom
I have a black MacBook that I had found at the thrift store over 2 years ago for $60 and it works. Just upgraded the hard drive with a bigger size since the old one was dying out. And was also able to find a replacement Black Battery that was unused and in original packaging for $12 at another thrift store as well.
I remember this model. It wasn’t my first one; this was probably my 5th computer. But I remember they changed the screens on this model laptop because prior to this they had the matte screens.
This one of the first computers I repaired as a technician at the Apple Store. The white ones were way more common and they’d get cracks in the topcase. I still have my white one but it stopped posting bc of the CD drive failing. Might get around to repairing it.
Kind of wish I would've kept mine around for nostalgia. Didn't collect hardware until later on and every time I see a video covering this model I regret selling it.
My first macbook was one of these bad boys, I bought it in 2006 and I still have it to this day. I replaced it in 2016 with a 2012 MBP, but it lasted those ten years while I was in school, which was very impressive. It’s slow, loud, and unusable for anything apart from light web browsing and writing word documents, but it still works okay considering its age. Not to mention how nice the black looks, with the bright white apple logo. The white ones don’t seem to have aged as well, so I’m glad I ended up with a black model.

@@insertnamehere6559 yeah, but you wouldn't throw valuable data out with the trash either.
I use to repair and flip tons of these on eBay and Craigslist, made a decent living for a couple years. These MacBooks have a hot spot on the bottom near the back middle that got incredibly hot when you used the Mac for a long time.
"perhaps one day these will become collectible" they already *are*, it's just that they haven't reached the point of being absurdly priced.
I bought my first ever Mac back in 2007 and it was a MacBook, unfortunately I couldn't afford the black one back then so i bought the white model, brings back so many memories, thanks for the video!
You could paint that battery black or vinyl wrap it
he’s like “they didn’t have a black one… but it’s fine”
I’m like “nuh uh no way get out the black sharpie”
@@lukel909 yea right
The internal cleaning was so satisfying
Why is the "healthy dose of eucalyptus oil" so funny to me
Maybe I've just watched a vid from this youtuber before, but it strikes me as peak Ozzie for tech videos when it's eucalyptus oil. Like koalas with screwdrivers😂
I've still got my 2008 "Blackbook" that I bought while living in Japan, so it has the Japanese keyboard layout. I don't use it as much these days, but it still works. It's the computer I use to sync my iPods.
One day i´ll probably get an older macbook just for the "what´s it like to run windows" experience 😃
Never thought I'd see a MacBook that was not only user serviceable, but was designed to be user serviceable and upgradable. This is really cool.
Dust is a computer's enemy, so you should clean it every once and a while
This comment reminded me to clean my laptop.
This looks so much better then the silver MacBooks.
I had the first generation of these from 2006, the 32-bit Core Duo. Over the years I upgraded the memory, hard drive, replaced the battery. Back in the day when devices were actually upgradeable and you could extend their life.
I found one earlier this year for $30 at a thrift store and in the same month someone threw out the box for the same model. I can't wait to fix it up! Thanks for your content :))
Wow macbook is really rare! And the cleaning is very satisfying…
Why don't you swap the casings of the batteries? The computer will look much nicer.
Because the casing for the batteries are sonically welded together, and trying to pry one open will damage the case, and you risk damaging the battery inside, which cause it to explode, and/or catch fire!!
I picked one up for 35$ running snow leopard. I honestly love it.
Bruh that laptop is nostalgia, i remember when i was 6 i would play on it for soooo long! (At least 10+ hours)
I still have this one.
There was a boot firmware update , only then you can Install Lion.
I've still got my black 2007 Macbook. Doesn't do much though these days, except for running a few ancient DOS games in Boxer. Great vid BTW
All of the parts fit in the new logic board except for the SuperDrive, due to an interface change.
my smile instantly faded away when he put the white battery in
That computer looks awesome! I want one now.
@@michaeljones3687 If you don't use the headphone jack you likely have nothing to worry about on those TVs. 😀
Thanks for watching my channel! 🤘
Greetings from Slovakia, everybody have a great day!
I really like this black Macbook. It reminds me of Thinkpad laptops. Keep finding more colored laptops if you can.
Old laptops are seriously made to last a long time
Another laptop saved from landfill. Great work! :)
Very nice restoration Nathan!
I want the black MacBook's back with the new MacBook Pro but with fully black design. nice work for the video man.
Crazy. These were EVERYWHERE when I was in college.
It has not been in regular use for over 3 years now.
the black macbooks were always fkn cool. I remember seeing them in school. Absolutely next level
you blew my mind when you showed the optical audio output :D
Chrome will also work on Snow Leopard, even though it will try to tell you that it doesn't. Automatic updates probably won't work though.
Old MacBooks are underestimated, with such great usability dispite the lack of web browser compatibility
That audio issue is common, I had that happen on my 2011 13" macbook pro. Usually resolved simply by inserting and removing a headphone jack once or twice to reset the sensor
Hey man, great video. I starded watching you because of Hugh Jeffreys with the macbook video! You've become my favorite😁
Me too
In the US it came with 2 GB of RAM instead of the standard 1, which is why I got it.
I got one of these in a closet somewhere, I might try to bring it back to life for typing, I recall it to be pretty good at that.
For some reason my intermediate school had TONS of these things back in the day
YOOO PSIVEWRI UPLOADED
:)
This is so refreshing… and satisfying.
Aaarrgghhh i want one of your macbook. So vintage!! 😻😻😻
It just looks cool with the black colour.
here we go. Another epic video from psivweri
5:55 Changing date to 2011-2012 using a terminal during installation would help
It would make me so happy if Apple released another black MacBook. I really hope they make them again in the future because I would buy it 100%
