I bought that machine when it was new. Over time I have updated my 4,1 to 5,1 and upgraded to the 6 core 12 thread Intel Xeon W3690, 48GB 1333 ECC DDR3 in triple channel mode, a Samsung 970 EVO M.2 drive on a PCIe card and the AMD Radeon Pro WX5100. These days I am using the machine for light virtualization tasks, as a ZFS NAS with 4 internal HDDs and for legacy hardware like optical drives, firewire stuff and so on. All on macOS Mojave. Without any doubt this Mac Pro has been the most reliable and useful piece of computer hardware I have ever owned. It is in it's 14th year of service and still going strong.
Just a tip about accessing the PCIe slots, there is a button on the fan casing. Press that, and it will slide back, freeing the slots. There is no need to remove the fan completely.

What you called corrosion at for example 5:45, 5:51, 5:58, 8:05 is actually just flux-residue from the original manufacturing, that got not cleaned off properly in the factory and turn white over time. That is also, why this white discoloration only form in very specific spots, where that form of flux was used for thru-hole soldering.
Aside from power consumption and CPU efficiency concerns, this Mac could be quite useful still! As others have suggested, Firmware upgrade, newer GPU/CPU, and maybe even Linux could make this computer someone's new rig! Maybe a home server or video editing machine or whatnot ☺
The AMD RX580 is a great GPU for these Mac Pros. The special Mac compatible GPUs just allow you to see the UEFI screens. This can be annoying if you're trying to reinstall an OS or if you're dual booting since you can't see the boot picker. PC compatible cards will just show a black screen until MacOS boots and the GPU drivers load. It is possible to flash a Mac compatible VBIOS to the GPU too.
I still use a 5.1. ITs all maxed out. Best Xeon CPU and the max RAM. Still capable and with newer metal supported video card you can run the latest version of MacOS. I have been using this with a matching 30" Cinema Display. They are old but still work as new. Love the design, however I need to clean it regularly due to its HUGE fans. Great video!!
They really were wonderful computers, the aesthetic is quite something. I have an old G5 Pro in my collection; you can fit a 17" G4 Powerbook between the 'handles' 🤣
What a FANTASTIC computer. The 4,1 can be firmware updated to a 5,1 and the device itself is upgradable to near modern power. The dual processor models could go up to 128 GB of RAM and with Opencore patcher, it will run Ventura (albeit with a few limitations). The GPU can be upgraded to modern specs too so gaming isn't unrealistic. Really good piece of history.
For the Graphics card, with a compatible OS, you could use up to a GTX 1080 on a High Sierra install(last macOS with Nvidia support) Although, you could also run comparable AMD GPUs from the same period(for stability. I don't think the PSU would be able to handle big power loads), as macOS still supports 3rd party Radeon cards.
@user lol I put an AMD Radeon HD 7970 in mine, and I am running AMD with OpenCore. Full support with Metal and it's the 2008 model. A GTX 600/700 is also going to work until Big Sur, and perfectly in Monterey with the root patch.
Catalina was the last one with native Nvidia support, there were still supported machines that had Nvidia cards. Big Sur was the one to drop it(although you can still get it to work with patches)
I still use one of these today, with a Xeon X5680, 32GB RAM, various SSDs, and an RX 580. This is all used with an install of open core so it can run windows 11 and macOS Monterey.
I think you can just install any old PC GPU in these as long as the OS on the machine has drivers for the video card. In that case, it'd probably be Windows or Linux. My friend used one of these with an RX 580 in it for a while. The Mac firmware wouldn't support the card so it'd have a black screen until the drivers load in the OS
If you are that determined, you can flash the Mac Pro 5,1 firmware onto this machine. Along with the latest OCLP release, you can run Ventura on it as long as you have a Metal compatible GPU, such as the RX580. On Macrumors, there is also a project, which is in testing now, to flash a BootROM onto the MPro to give a boot selector screen and a boot progress screen with almost any modern GPU without having to flash the graphics card first. It is also intended to give USB 3.0 support in EFI.
OK, "young you" = a frelling adorable kid! Also for some reason looking A LOT like a cousin of mine when he was about the same age. Perhaps booting in Windows would give more options.
I have this exact model. It's been on 24/7 for the last decade, most recently built out as a 6TB RAID file server (back when 6TB was considered a lot). Built like a tank, and more dependable than just about any other machine I've ever had. Decently priced, too, at least compared to the lunacy of Apple's current Mac Pro line.
I still have my converted 4,1 > 5,1 sitting under my desk as a server. Probably one of the best designed computers ever made and a testament to the community and repairable, modular designs. I doubt Apple will ever sell a machine quite like this again.
From what I have heard people need the original GPU to update the drivers or firmware to install a different gpu. Something along those lines. Saw it in a video from Austin Evans a few years ago. 10:27 Look mate it's a PKCELL battery. I only now learned Runescape is actually called old school rune scape and isn't a reference to its age.
i bought a broken PowerMac G5 (basically identical case) and gutted it, and converted it to ATX, looks really good and the airflow is amazing, no overheating problems (i7 9700 and gtx 1080). The only logical use for those computers as they are essencially E-waste in 2023
I've owned 4 of these designs Mac Pro throughout the years. And also 1 PowerMac G5. Incredible computers. The 4,1 & 5,1 are probably the greatest (modern era) Macs ever made in terms of longevity.
That looks a whole lot easier to work with than the PowerMac G5's that used the same cases. That thing was a nightmare to get cleaned up. Mind you, it is now just a case for a more modern i7 machine - one of the hackiest jobs I have ever done considering the power supply now sits at the front.
The 5.1 version can be updated to dual 3.46Ghz Xeons and while Apple list a max of 64Gb ram, there's a kit that will allow 128Gb. With an NVMe based drive and a decent GPU, they still make for a very good Broadcast Graphics box, or for an Uncompressed Raw video capture box for some Cinema cameras, using either Sonnet or similar software raid cards and SDI connected capture cards.
I wish there was a way to convert these machines but still make use of the optical drives, SATA drives and USB. I believe a lot of custom work would have to go into it. A M2 Pro Mini motherboard with some custom thunderbolt adapters could make it work, but it would take a lot of skill.
That 4C/8T CPU should still be OK, and upgrading the RAM to 16GB (4x 4GB) would also help as well. I'm pretty sure there should be a way of installing a newer Mac OS to keep this machine running - even basic programs such as Chrome/Firefox/Spotify now require 10.13 or newer.
A dual CPU version of this is my main system. It started out as a lower end 2009 4,1 such as this one except it was a dual CPU. It has since been upgraded to two 6c/12t Xeon X5680’s, 96 GB of RAM, and a Radeon RX 590. It runs the latest release of macOS Ventura booted off an NVMe, and Windows 11. It plays the new Hogwarts Legacy very well, and does anything I throw at it. These old Mac Pro’s even a single CPU model like this, are far from just being a paper weight. I also want to add that I have a second one that is my server. It runs TrueNAS, with 6 HDDs, 4x4 TB disks, and 2x12 TB disks. It also is my Plex server. That one started out as a similar 2009 4,1 but now has two 6 core Xeon X5675’s with 32GB of RAM.
mac pros arent unusable. you just need to upgrade them. my upgraded mac pro has dual xeon 5890s, rx 6600 xt, 128gb ddr3 ram, m.2 nvme, and modern i/o through pcie upgrades
I have the same MacPro 4,1 flashed as 5,1 and upgraded with 32GB RAM, 8 GB video card and running Ventura 3.2 thanks to OCLP 0.61… they can be upgradable and useful in 2023.
I've got a 2008 Mac Pro and two PowerMac G5's an boy, are they some beautiful machines. I definitely use them as chairs, and they do definitely work well for that! Also, my Macbook fits right in between the handles, so I also use them as a laptop holder and/or small table-esk thing. Such multifunctional devices with this case design! :)
Im watching this on a 2009 Mac Pro. Mine has a single Xeon X5775 @ 3.06ghz (6-cores), 64gb DDR 3, AMD RX580 GPU, USB 3.1 card, SATA-III card with dual SSD's, and dual 32" Monitors. These machines are still very usable, I love mine, but its starting to show its age, but its still quite fast. I run Big Sur on mine, and so long as it still runs well, it will still be in service.
Most of the white residue on the boards you suspected to be corrosion was just flux residue from selective soldering process. No need to clean that with vinegar.
I definitely don’t think this is a paperweight. Processing power wise Its worlds better than a chrome book. It’s usable..nobody really games on macs anyway 🤷🏻♂️
You should cross flash it to a Mac Pro 5.1. After that you can 1. Boot off nvme, 2. Install 6 core CPUs. 3. Install a later macos than what you can now. And the last efi of 5.1 is much later released than the 4.1s last edition.
I've got a 2006 macbook pro, the chunky one. I got it for $10, but it has no battery. I changed the DDR2 ram modules and I only use it for recording live music since it cannot be upgraded through a patcher unlike my other computer, a macbook white which I was able to update to Catalina and I also use it for recording live music, light web browsing and online teaching.
This old Mac Pro's with Linux installed are solid, but power hungry servers. Saw few of them and even did one on my own for friend lately as he didn't wanted to get from his Mac but wanted it to be server, so one Debian install later, Openmediavault on it and Jellyfin after all made his server. It is power hungry, bit loud when near it, but as it is on separate breaker and in another room, can't complain about noise. Friend upgraded to Mac Studio (M1 Ultra, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD), so he has his old Mac Pro to spare and didn't wanted to sell it as it have memories with it (got him though high school, college and on that machine he found his first full time job).
They are great machines. I have a pair with the maxed out Xeons and 32GB RAM. They were my primary 4k editing setup until the M1 Macbook Pro came out. Their downfall is power consumption. They burn 250W at idle. It becomes quickly apparent that it costs more than the machine is worth just to have them running for any considerable amount of time.
Yep. I've been measuring the power usage coming out of mine and it's clear that a M1 Mini could be had (used) for the energy costs alone. However, I'd still have to pay for some sort of HDD enclosure or NAS system to hook up to it, and an enclosure for my BluRay drive.
Seeing this video on my 5.1 Mac Pro with Dual 6 cores Xeons, 96gb of ram and a Amd rx 5700 XT. I use it for 4k Multicam video editing without a problem. Runing Monterrey. If you install a cheap used Metal compatible GPU and use Open Core you can further upgrade this machine and giving it a new life span. Still are great and cheap machines.
I enjoyed your video. I've got a Mid-2010 Mac Pro tower that's having an issue outputting to the monitor. Just stopped working one day. Sounds like system still boots but doesn't display anything on the monitor. So am looking for tips on doing a deep clean and this video is helpful. I wasn't sure how to disassemble the power supply/ optical drive area.
wikkid , just ordered two of those , on st patricks day too 🥃🥃🍀🍀🍀 used these for ages but when apple pulled os support it was a bummer, now thanks to open core, we are back. i mean think 5,1 or 7,1 , thats £300 plus a gpu or £5k errm 6,1 was apple being apple , G5 cube etc..
Might make for a decent NAS or home server if you can get a custom OS running on it. Not exactly power efficient, but it's an option for repurposing old hardware without throwing a ton of upgrade parts at it.
Gut them and put modern hardware in them. They make a great case. You can paint them, put a side windows on them and make them look pretty sweet. I used epoxy to secure the standoff onto the internals. Fun project if you are into that kind of thing. I now have 2 of the Mac G5 version.
Just for info, with a proper metal compliant GPU, my Mac pro 5,1 is running Mac OS 13,2 via OCLP. These old machines are awesome, well worth still picking up if you can get one, the graphics cards are probably double the cost of a system but well worth it
Those Apple "cheese grater" cases are awsome. Windows XP was a huge step up from 98 and ME for home machines. I went from Win ME to Windows 2000 before getting XP, and the increase in stability over ME was incredible. Mind you, I remember Windows 95 being a huge step up from Windows 3.x and MS DOS. 😁
i always look forward to when you finished with the pc and are able tp play some games, been a fellow osrs player i love the fact that you play our childhood game still :) much love from UK
I love mine! Installed Win 10 on it, a more modern graphics card, and it will quite happily run most games I throw at it. Granted it's noisy and hot, but it was absolutely dirt cheap. Slight downside is you need to keep the original graphics card in as well as the bios screen won't display on the new card.
These old Mac Pros have no issues driving any GPU, just don’t expect an EFI boot screen (unless you use OpenCore Legacy Patcher) on ones without a Mac VBIOS
If it's not a thermally conductive material like some bad pastes or liquid metal (Which is also bad, but...), the "wrong" amount of thermal paste is not enough to adequately spread. There's not too much. Period. It is OKAY if thermal paste gets places, it's not conductive, it can't cause harm. Except to your wallet, since, well, it isn't free. You put enough to spread. That's good.
This is why I sightly agree with schools buying s**tty eBay Windows PC's for their IT rooms. You buy expensive brand new Mac Pros or Minis and they just become outdated and slow in under a couple of years. At least with cheap Windows PC's you can replace em every couple months.
I usually never download games I see sponsored but the fishing game seemed relaxing rather than the regular type of game you see ads for so I downloaded it and used the code. We’ll see if it is any good. Hoping for some nice beautiful locations to fish.
Currently running a 5,1 for my main rig. Kitted it out over the last few years and it runs great. Love having the ability to upgrade and tinker around with it. The ethernet daisychaining is actually quite nice to get my pc online too as it doesn't have wifi built in. Currently working on building a new PC inside an old G5 chassis actually. About 80% done, but should be able to finish it this weekend. Test fitting rn, everything seems to fit just perfectly. Though cable management is going to look atrocious since there's no backplate to hid everything behind Want to make a video about it, but not sure how i would go about that, especially this late in the process lol.
i sold my 2012 Mac Pro, 48 gig ram, 6 core for 200 bucks. So glad to see it go. I was tired of dealing with open core every time it needed a new os update. And besides m1 mini crushes the performance compared to it.

Man, this is what I love about your videos, giving love back to whatever it is you got before you and breathing life back into it. It's awesome.
My tip for those dymo labels is use a Heat Gun( paint stripping etc ) and they come off easy.
I wish these had a standard ATX layout, it'd be sick to throw some modern hardware into that chassis!
Ahhh how beautiful the design of Mac Pro, even on the inside 🥰🥰🥰
How I wish your vids were longer
No video with Psivewri is complete without eucalyptus oil and isopropyl alcohol 🤣😂
the best mac with upgradable compatibility!!!!
wikkid , just ordered two of those , on st patricks day too 🥃🥃🍀🍀🍀 used these for ages but when apple pulled os support it was a bummer, now thanks to open core, we are back. i mean think 5,1 or 7,1 , thats £300 plus a gpu or £5k errm 6,1 was apple being apple , G5 cube etc..
Might make for a decent NAS or home server if you can get a custom OS running on it. Not exactly power efficient, but it's an option for repurposing old hardware without throwing a ton of upgrade parts at it.
I believe this model still didn't have the T2 chip so you can probably install any OS with no hassle
@@LaGamerLia666 Get TrueNAS going on it, utilize the drive sleds for the data drives. It’ll have plenty of cpu power to do the job.
How do you find these computers from the trash? Is there an easy way to get them?
the sponsor transition was perfect.
Love the video! And also the email part was funny
These old machines are awesome, well worth still picking up if you can get one, the graphics cards are probably double the cost of a system but well worth it
the cleaning process was INCREDIBLY satisfying :D
Great review love older tech I've never really been a fan of Apple but I love their designs I've always been a Windows XP fan 💕
I started my journey with a 1,1 and currently a 3,1 running Mojave. One day I’ll have the 5,1 and this will be my reference video.
Not any more. That requirement went with OCLP and a custom BootROM which does the same and a bit more besides is in testing.
These old Mac Pros have no issues driving any GPU, just don’t expect an EFI boot screen (unless you use OpenCore Legacy Patcher) on ones without a Mac VBIOS
Opencore legacy patcher! With an SSD you can run way more modern versions of MacOS as long as the GPU is Metal capable.
I'm a fan of the X method of applying thermal paste as well. Never had a problem doing it like that.
This is why I sightly agree with schools buying s**tty eBay Windows PC's for their IT rooms. You buy expensive brand new Mac Pros or Minis and they just become outdated and slow in under a couple of years. At least with cheap Windows PC's you can replace em every couple months.
Lol fishing clash sampled a sound effect from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure for the “play now” button at 12:08
I usually never download games I see sponsored but the fishing game seemed relaxing rather than the regular type of game you see ads for so I downloaded it and used the code. We’ll see if it is any good. Hoping for some nice beautiful locations to fish.
ive never met anyone with more school computer connections
Currently running a 5,1 for my main rig. Kitted it out over the last few years and it runs great. Love having the ability to upgrade and tinker around with it. The ethernet daisychaining is actually quite nice to get my pc online too as it doesn't have wifi built in. Currently working on building a new PC inside an old G5 chassis actually. About 80% done, but should be able to finish it this weekend. Test fitting rn, everything seems to fit just perfectly. Though cable management is going to look atrocious since there's no backplate to hid everything behind
Want to make a video about it, but not sure how i would go about that, especially this late in the process lol.
ah, that good hit of eucalipt oil to endure this filthy mac pro case that we call life.
Nice vid, plus great music for end credits
The greatest Mac ever designed, followed by the 2012 Mac Mini. These old macs work great as servers.
i sold my 2012 Mac Pro, 48 gig ram, 6 core for 200 bucks. So glad to see it go. I was tired of dealing with open core every time it needed a new os update. And besides m1 mini crushes the performance compared to it.
Am i weird in thinking the case designs of these old Mac Pro's are still miles better than any recent PC desktop cases?
My favorite Mac. I really miss my 2006 Mac Pro.
