One of the best ways to explore York is on foot. A stroll down any snickelway, wall or ings opens you up to a whole world of discovery. This year, in conjunction with Welcome to Yorkshire’s #Walkshire campaign, we’re encouraging people to Love Walking in York.
If you are in Yorkshire and looking for things to do in York England, then watch our video as we walk through the centre of this incredible place, taking in the sights and sounds of the streets here.
The first thing that strikes you about York when you arrive here is just how beautiful and ancient it all feels. It really is like stepping into another world on some streets, most notably the famous Shambles and the area around York Minster
York England is a walled city in northeast England that was founded by the ancient Romans. Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, has medieval stained glass and 2 functioning bell towers. The City Walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse. The Monk Bar gate houses an exhibition tracing the life of 15th-century Plantagenet King Richard III.
York is worth visiting at least once if you are in Yorkshire. The city has several historic landmarks and has a very romantic and scenic old town. With attractions like visiting the York Minster, the chocolate factory, the historic castle walls or the Shambles, you are in for a treat.
York was founded in 71 AD when Cerialis and the Ninth Legion constructed a military fortress (castra) on flat ground above the River Ouse near its junction with the River Foss. The fortress was later rebuilt in stone, covered an area of 50 acres, and was inhabited by 6,000 soldiers.
Perfectly placed half-way between London and Edinburgh and with the glorious Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Wolds right on the doorstep, York England is unlike any other English city. There’s thirty world-class museums you can explore, the best racecourse in the country and a thriving cultural scene, not forgetting, York is voted the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times. So, what are you waiting for? Book your break to York England and create your own adventure!
Like stepping back into the middle ages, the overhanging timber-framed houses and traditional shopfronts of The Shambles makes it one of the UK’s most historic (and picturesque) streets.
You can’t miss York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe and also one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in the world.
You can reach York from London by train in 2 hours. Or from the city of Leeds, it is just a 20-minute train ride.
A place of extraordinary cultural wealth, visit York and you’ll discover a beautifully preserved medieval city that’s a must for York England history buffs. Step 2,000 years into the past as you wander the Gothic halls of York Minster Cathedral, delve into the city’s Viking past at the annual Jorvik Viking Festival, or explore history of a different kind at the National Railway Museum.
Trace the footsteps of William the Conquerer and enjoy mesmerising views from Clifford’s Tower, or dip into the eclectic array of independent boutiques nestled in the postcard-pretty 13th century timber buildings of The Shambles - York’s most beautiful street. Add to that a buzzing foodie scene and some of Britain’s most stunning scenery, and you’ll soon see why York’s the place to be. This guide to York should give you an idea of what it's like to wander the streets of York in the city centre of York England.
York is one of the most popular places to visit in the UK, and it’s no surprise - spend a day in York and chances are you’ll have walked past every type of architecture from every era in human history.

Oh my word you’ve just listed three of my favourite places!!
I’ve got a great Haworth video on my channel and Hebden Bridge will be coming out soon!
Sending best wishes to you in sunny NZ!
You should also visit Lincoln, our cathedral is beautiful and the shops near to it very much like York!
@@AF-wr9hx Lincolnshire is the place we intend to move back to when we leave Nz. We have had many wonderful holidays there and the catherdral is one of our favorite places to visit. Cant wait to be there 💕
I've been a few times, once for a week with a Yorkpass. Highly recommended! Thanks for re-stirring the memories.
Can't wait to graduate from York (YSJU) in 2023. It will be incredible to extend my trip to visit Christmas Markets (bucket list)!
On yes - definitely would recommend that!
I was there in 97, love it! Great video.
thank you so much for a great walk York is My Favorite city
Our pleasure!
Thank you for this video. I have very happy memories of walking The Shambles and visiting the minster with my mum. She loved the quirky shops and bought me a crystal cat that I treasure. We went in the height of summer and it was so packed you were almost carried along with the crowds.
You're really welcome
I started the channel for that reason - to try and give people happy memories
Great place to visit especially the Railway Museum
Agreed Tom 👍👍
Went to York once as a child and have fond memories watching this bought back those memories
Ah lovely stuff - it's a beautiful place isn't it! Are you going back again sometime?
Lovely to walk round my hometown again!
Ah awesome stuff - hope it brought back happy memories!
I’ve enjoyed your walks round Haworth, Holmfirth and now York. Is it sunny everywhere you go!? Back in the 1980s I lived in Cheshire and my girlfriend lived in Edinburgh. We each took the train and met up in York for a few days every so often. Much time was spent in Taylor’s Tea Rooms on Stonegate. Happy days... haven’t been back since so nice to see it all again!
Fantastic stuff! That sounds like a proper romance!!
I will let you into a secret regarding the sun and the blue skies / I check the weather in a morning to see where it’s going to have amazing blue skies and jump in the car and race there as fast as possible to capture it 🤣
@@GimbalWalkTV I appreciate the time it takes to create your amazing videos. Like you say a lot goes on behind the scenes. A lot of waiting for the right weather! I guess rainy days are good for editing. By the way what gimbal do you use? I have watched a lot of walking videos and yours are right up there with steadiness & smoothness. Thanks
@@RealStAndrews Thank you so much
Wow absolutely love York quirky shops and buildings it’s a lovely place thanks for showing as it bought back a lot of good memories for me 😊

I love York... Me and the hubby went there in 2015 on our honeymoon... Not been back since then, the ghost walk starting from The Shambles is really good, the best one in my view!! Can't wait to get back to York at some point. And recommend a tour of the York chocolate factory, its very interesting and full of history.. Then end up in the shop and buy loads of fattening chocolates 😉
Been to York many times for a city break. Stunning place!

Another great walk …makes me want to visit York again . The subtle background music and street sounds worked well.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Fabulous video as always keep on walking 🚶🏻
Thank you
Going next year. So excited
You'll have a great time!
I've been to York several times. With the pandemic I've not had the chance to go since 2019. Hopefully by next year things will have calmed down enough for me to go again.
Fingers crossed for you
Love your walking through towns videos, thank you x
You’re welcome 😊 It's a pleasure to film them!
One of my favourite cities to visit. I usually stay over and prefer wandering around the streets in the evening when its a bit quieter 😉
Amazing video !! Being a Yorkshireman this makes me proud 👍👍 great job 👏
Thank you so much! This one was a pleasure to film ❤️
I went to York six years ago. It is such a wonderful city with so much history! We walked around the walls and the historic areas and at night we joined a very funny ghost tour. It is sad to see it with so many closed shops. Covid aftermath, I Guess...
Ah I want to go on the ghost tour now you've mentioned it!!
@@GimbalWalkTV It was a foggy winter night, really suitable to amble through the narrow streets around the cathedral led by an actor/guide narrating creepy stories!
@@monicadagna683 ha I bet that was brilliant fun!!
amazing
Great place!
Such a wonderful walk!! 👏🤩🙌 Thanks for always taking us along and letting us enjoy these lovely places! Yes, I've been to York before and it's one of my favourite places ever! Lovely memories from this city, can't wait to go back!
Thank you Andrea!
So glad it triggered happy memories for you like that ❤️
Sometimes I go to places and fall in love with them - York does that to me!
Gimbal Walk TV Absolutely! I couldn’t agree more, York is simply magical 😄✨ It has that effect on people, I fell in love with it the first time I saw York Minster from the walls coming from the station, stunning! Always enjoy your videos, brilliant work! 👏😀
@@AndreaBahen Thank you!
Have you ever walked the York City Walls? Am thinking of filming a wander along them
Gimbal Walk TV Ooh that would be brilliant! I’d love to see a wander along the Walls 🤩! Yes, I have! not the entire circuit though... but my favourite part has to be from Bootham Bar to Monk bar, some incredible views from there! Don’t you think?
謝謝您的影片,對於我的英國旅行規劃很有幫助。
It's a lovoly place
I am been there before in York go in town to walk around about was great. I go there again one day.
Yes! You'll have a great time!
Born and raised in York.
I hope to return one day.
Fingers crossed for you Ruben ❤️
great video i love york
Thank you - means a lot! ❤️❤️
In short, I have been to York. I loved it.
Great isn’t it!
Thanks loved the video with no music, if feels more like you are walking the streets yourself. Have you ever did any videos in the Devon / Cornwall area, beautiful places down there also.
Thanks David!
I was just heading towards there this week but got Ill and had to come back home so will try again soon!
Another good video. Is it pedestrians only? Lots of listed buildings I imagine as well. It would be a must see for me......even if only in my dreams.
There are just a few roads that allow traffic but other than that you can just wander safely without getting mowed down by a Morris Minor hurtling down the road!
@@GimbalWalkTV lol, our cars are bigger. Thankfully we don't play the knock down a pedestrian points game these days. I could see myself dropping kilograms walking about.
💕💕💕 PERFEITO!!!!! 💙💙💙 Obrigada pelo maravilhoso passeio!!! Abraços do Brasil 🇧🇷
❤️❤️
Hope one day I will go there and have a walk!
Fingers crossed for you 👍👍
Hope you are safe and well - let me know what you think of York - is it a place you've been? Would you like to go?
I live in York. It's a lovely city.
Wonderful, I can feel it all over again. Don’t know how you kept yourself from wandering into a pub though. I couldn’t
@@jeffmougenot9467 I know what you mean! York is the ultimate pub crawl!
@@GimbalWalkTV not for the last 12 months it's not. We've lost a significant portion of our indy pubs and microbreweries.
But at least we've finally gained a Michelin star restaurant!
@@keytostart7053 where's the restaurant 😁
I've been to York. Its a shame you didn't get coverage of the museums, e. g. Castle Museum, Clifford Tower, Jorvik Museum and the Railway museum, don't forget the city walls. Video is nice.
Amazing video! Just I would like to know which place of York is this?
York in Yorkshire England - it's the main city streets right in the middle of York
Are you filming this on a gopro attached to your head ???
By the way lived in York all my life
You missed so much out my friend.
There is lots more to see ,,I've seen it all my life but I can understand why others would find it interesting.
If you come back and do this again and need someone to show you around,,give me a shout on this comment. Happy to help. 👍
Thank you so much that would be great!
Excellent quality video. What camera do you use?
