WALKS IN DORSET at HIGHER BOCKHAMTON, STINSFORD & KINGSTON MAURWARD (& THOMAS HARDY'S COTTAGE)

  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk that is effectively a “cradle to grave” homage to the famous novelist & poet Thomas Hardy - starting at his birthplace at Higher Bockhampton & ending where his heart is buried at Stinsford churchyard. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I park my car at the Thomas Hardy Cottage Visitor centre car park (although the cottage is owned by the National Trust, everyone has to pay in the car park - including national Trust members).
    My walk starts from Thomas Hardy's cottage - there is a fee to visit it & dogs are not allowed inside - but you can get close to the cottage (for free!) as the path goes right along the side of it. Just to the side of the cottage is a memorial to Thomas Hardy & the spot marks the start of the Hardy Way (a 220 mile long distance path that connects various locations in Dorset that have a connection with Hardy).
    I then head South to Rushy Pond and then follow the old Roman road East before heading South again past the Rainbarrows - three bronze age barrows.
    I exit Puddletown Forest, head across a road to Norris Mill Farm before heading West to Duddle Farm & Lower Bockhampton. At this point, I cross Lower Bockhampton bridge & join The Hardy Way along the side of the River Frome as I make my way to Stinsford.
    At Stinsford I visit the church and of course the churchyard where the heart of Thomas Hardy is buried.
    I then head North East to Kingston Maurward where I stop off at the cafe before starting my final leg of the journey North East back to the car park at Higher Bockhampton.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this one! We are both Dorset born and as newlyweds back in 1975 my hubby and I lived in Eagle Lodge, the lodge house to Stinsford School. It is still there but privately owned, I think, now. We used to enjoy walking by the river and in Thorncombe Woods. It was all a lot quieter of course, back then. Less well known!

      We did get a little lost today, ended up going around Puddletown forest a couple of times 🤣 We did it from Stinsford, along the riverside, lower Bockhampton etc, rain did catch us out today but sheltered by the pond in the woods. Feet are feeling it now as it turned out a 10 miler 🤣🤣

    Another spectacular walk! In my dim and distant youth I used to be a huge Hardy fan but cannot remember many of the tales now though I do remember being shocked and harrowed by Jude the Obscure - because we are too many. You did well to abridge 200 miles odd into half a dozen! Reader's Digest will be on to you!! They do say home is where the heart is and that rung true at the end! Thank you for another entertaining video.

    Is there any chance you can map your walk so we could follow it?. we have done your walks in the past and they are great but hard to find your route, and it would be great if you put it on AllTrails or something so we could follow your exact route?

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  Год назад

      Hi. I always put a map as one of the pictures on my post of the walk on my Facebook page "Dave's Countryside Walks", and you can then take a screen print? So if you want to find a map, just put the walk name in the search bar pf the Facebook page & that should take you to the post for that walk. Hope that helps.
