- This is My 2021 Silverado 2500 HD Custom Truck. One of the things I disliked about the this trim is the steering wheel. In this Video I upgrade it to a Leather steering wheel!

Bought a 2022 2500 custom and the first week I noticed how i frowned at the steering wheel too. It’s hard and slippery, I’ll just add a steering cover from amazon. Quick and easy fix.
Yeah a cover is a good idea.
You should just switch over the left steering wheel controls on your old steering wheel to the new one. Would require more take apart of the new wheel, but that way you dont have to worry about having the heating button there and not working. Thinking about doing the same thing for my trail boss.
I’m going to try to get the heated button to work, stay tuned….

@@Myksgarage just did my wheel. I ordered one without the heat button from Rock Auto. If you have a heat control, WAMs is trying to crack the equation I hear. In the meantime. I just put a hair dryer on the main bolt for a little while, then with a 1/2" drive breaker bar, it came right off.
Does a 1500 only have the battery terminal on the passenger side to disconnect?

check the fuse box and see if the fuse for heated seat is missing and installed,
The wiring harness might be the same for both models

I have the exact same truck but a 2024, mine doesn’t have steering wheel control and it’s driving me nuts.

If you check the fuse block, is there a spot for the heated steering wheel where you just need to add the fuse so it will work?
I haven’t checked the fuse block yet , I’ll try it and see, hopefully it’s that easy!
Hi! By chance, did you check the Steering wheel heating fuse ? it is the F22 in the right passenger fuse box, did it work?

I have a 2020 custom with the halogen headlights. Is there a way to turn off the headlights off of auto? Il turn them off then everytime i start my truck there on again an its driving me crazy! My headlights are on even a bright sunny day.

No I never explored it further.
@@Myksgarage I am working on mod, based off another RUclipsr that got the heat to work using an aftermarket controller. I am going to tinker around with it when i get the parts and post a video. Might be pretty easy "fix" to get it working.
i was able to break that center bolt loose with a ratchet, but after a few turns it stopped and got really tight. im wondering if i can use heat and an impact gun? or could it be possible they stipped it at the dealer when they did the recall? all im trying to do is move the steering wheel a couple notches to the right to center it perfectly. at the dealer they told me it cant be further adjusted, which is b.s…
Yeah I would use an impact wrench
already order same wheel the stock wheel on my 2021 feels uncomfortable.

Did the replacement part you listed come with all of the audio controls or did you need to switch them over? & is the heated steering wheel plug & play?
The wheel I Bought came with all the controls. Heated steering wheel didn't work because mine was not wired from the factory for it

Is it possible to put the steering wheel on crooked? If you don’t get the notches lined up? Or can it only go on one way?
You can put it in Crooked, you have to line up the marks or it will be misaligned

Looks like the Chevy airbag doesn't quite fit the GMC wheel like it should. Good thing to know.

I just upgraded to the same but the lights on the controls dont light up now also airbag is not a perfect fit

My steering wheel does not have the cellphone option on the right side of the steering wheel. Will the wiring be there if i purchased a steering wheel with the cellphone buttons?.
Good question, not sure. My truck did not have the heating steering wheel option however the new wheel did and when I hooked it up the wiring was not there so it didn't function, that could be the case for yours.
Question, just purchased a 2020 silverado 1500 custom, I don't have the controls on the right nor do I have the audio toggle pads on the back of the wheel ( Both sides). Is this just a matter of plug and play?
Possibly, but I can't confirm because mine had the audio controls. I just wanted the leather steering wheel.
Got a question for those of you have attempted this. I found a wheel but it does not have front collision( my current one does). I plan on swapping out and keeping all of my controls. Do we think that the new wheel will lack any wiring needed for my front collision to continue working once I swap?
You should be able to swap over all of your controls to the new wheel
Has anyone found out if this works? I have a 2022 2500hd custom and it has the front collision alert. Can I use the leather wheel #84646078 w/o heat, w/o front collision and just install my existing front collision switch into this wheel!? Or should I order the wheel #84946343 with front collision and with heat and install my switch in that. Or just keep the switch in that wheel and the heated wheel switch would not work. Would like the heated wheel option but I haven't found anyone who got that to work yet so I would like to use my switch with just front collision in the wheel so I don't have a wheel heat switch thats not working. Thanks
@@jasonconnerley6753 you want to find one with your existing features, if they have more you’re ok, but they probably won’t work. If the new one has the extra heated option, you can just replace the buttons with yours so you won’t have a dead heat button. This is the route I took with both of my upgrades.
Ok, thank you Micheal👍 I was thinking the same...to get a leather wheel with more options than I have vs the one without front collision. Wasn't sure how the wiring works but I would feel safer getting the wheel with the heat so that I know my front collision will work, and just change the switch so there is not a non-functional heat button. Was just trying to save a few dollars if I could...lol Thank you!
Does anyone know what color the rubber wheel is in the custom trim? Trying to figure out if I should order the black leather wheel or the extra very dark atmosphere leather wheel? Haven't received my truck yet. My wt is obviously black but on the custom vids. the wheel looks lighter possibly...help! Lol

It is on there pretty tight
Apply heat to the bolt. A hair dryer is fine

Yes, but be careful, it looks like there is a change over around oct 2020. Not sure what it was, but Rock Auto was showing one in their selections.
When you swapped your steering wheel, did you have to get your pre-crash reprogrammed?

The precrash is located on the left side of the steering wheel that shows two car icons crashing into each other@@Myksgarage

I have a 2022 Silverado Custom without any buttons on the right side. When I bought the truck I didn’t think it was a big deal but it’s been driving me crazy. I want volume control and to be able to skip songs through the steering wheel so I was looking to do this. What else would need to be added if I don’t already have buttons on the right side?

I have a 2023 (built 12/22) Z71 Trail Boss Custom without the steering wheel radio control option, and wanna do this too, but I’m hearing that the wiring harnesses are slightly different than the 2020-pre 2022.5 models.
If yours is a pre-2022.5 model it’s as simple as a single wire. There’s a guy that shows it as he installs a High Country dash cluster.

I want to do the same to my 2023 silverado 1500 custom. When looking on ebay how did you know what steering wheel fits your truck ? I called the dealer but they cant help me. Also do they airbags for all steering wheels ?

What is the part number on your high country cluster
Mines a custom trim, and I kept the gauge cluster the same, I only changed the steering wheel

Just did this mod this morning and what a difference 👍 ... I swapped over my old trim ring though so the interior would still match though, not hard at all but that bolt is definitely a pain to loosen.
For anybody else without an impact qrench, put a hair dryer set on high heat on the nut for a few minutes. Then it will break loose with a breaker bar and socket. It won't take a lot of force when warmed up a bit.
@@donavonrobbins1908i tried taking the bolt off mine and it turned a couple times then got really hard, you think heat will get it off? it might be its stipped or something.
How long did you have to go at the impact wrench? What psi? Mine isn’t moving.
I wonder if my impact wrench isn’t delivering enough torque. It’s pneumatic and the max is 250 from what I can tell. Does anyone know what the required torque is?
I had mine set at 110 psi. I’m not sure what the torque spec is, mine came off after about 20 seconds

@@Myksgarage yeah, same as yours but with the gray stitching. Also, swapped the cloth seats for the katskin leather to match. Highly recommend it. So much more comfortable and looks completely factory.
That is a gmc wheel. Not for the Silverado.. that’s why it fits wrong around the air bag.
I do believe it's a GMC wheel. It think it looks exactly like the Chevy wheel.
@@Myksgarage take note of the open space below the airbag on the Chevy wheel then the gmc wheel. Then look at the curves in the trim towards the lower part of the airbag. Looks absolutely fine but still incorrect for the truck. We all have the freedom to modify as we please!

anyone have any tips. I have striped out the middle bolt with a torque wrench and cannot unscrew it now. Is there anything i can do about that haha.

The original harness just plugs into it

I have a 2024 2500 custom w/o audio controls. Swapped for the leather wheel that has audio and cruise does NOT work. Called the dealer and they said the wiring for cruise is different. Either way, I love the feel of the leather and will probably not worry about the cruise control since I don’t use it.
