- How to Sublimate an Image to Aluminum!
After getting a few requests for more videos on Sublimation Transfer printing, I decided to show you how I go about to Sublimate Images on to ALUMINUM Plate that has been coated for sublimation.
I am using a 4 color ( CMYK ) EPSON WF 1100 leaded with a CISS with Precisioncolors Sublimation inks.
Printed the transfer letting the driver control color and choosing Presentation Matte for the paper and PHOTO quality.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed watching this. It was concise but detailed, and not how I would have thought metal prints were done.
Than you. Actually sublimation is one of the ways to produce aluminum prints. You can also use inkjet coated aluminum which can be printed on any printer featuring a straight media path. They require some post treatment such as varnishing and lamination to protect them. None of that is required when you sublimate to aluminum.
Awesome tutorial.. well-paced spreading the knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Wow that was the clearest tutorial we have ever watched
🙌🙌🙌 Beautiful work! I have the same heat transfer, great to know I can use my photography photos .
Great video ! I have a heat press so I am going to try this.....just had one done by a local business and it was a bit expensive !
Excellent overview of the whole process-- beginning to end. Still debating whether to include this type of product in our offerings but at least now I have a much better idea as to what would be involved. Thanks much!
It's a pretty large commitment as you need dedicate a printer only for sublimation and never go back to common inks. As well as a good reliable heat press and possibly a mug heat press as well.
most wholesome informative video i have seen
Great tips. I just ordered the F570 😎 Good luck with my Journey
That's awesome! The colors seem to come through on the metal far better than what the paper looks like. Very nice.
That is always the case.
Very nice process and video dear José. I was always very curious about the process of making those beautiful metal prints. I just never studied the subject because I am not ready for it yet. But I am sure it is something I want to experience in the medium term futuro. Thank you for sharing this.
There will be much more coming once I get my new Heat Press.
Loved your video- where can I find the aluminum mounting to hang the picture after sublimating? I looked on your Amazon page- couldn’t find it- Thank you- enjoy the Holidays!
What are all the items you need to sublimate onto metal blanks(do they have to be raw?) Heat press, epson inkjet printer, transfer paper, Teflon sheet and tape? What are the brands of all the items you use? Watching you do this perfectly I want to be sure I am investing in the exact products that works. Thanks!!
CHROMALUXE Sub Aluminum/ A-Sub Paper. Inks form Precisioncolors. The rest can be whatever brand you choose.
Thank you so much for all this info Brother, we really appreciate you being so open and sharing this hidden knowledge. Could you please also tell me what is the name of the heat press you use? I'm looking to get a machine to do my art prints on aluminium, would love to do prints larger upto A3 or even A1

Hi Jose, I just got in the digi coat spray for sublimation. I believe its the same layer coating that they apply on the aluminum sheet you got there. I'm gonna apply the the spray on the bottle openers i have so i can sublimate a photo on to it. Will keep you posted. Plus i been rearranging my Computer room to place my new toys...lol. Arrrg Not enough room . Wished i had a basement .
I ordered the white and clear glossy in 32 ounce bottles.
I will apply it to so called subway ceramic tiles which are about 4x8". They will be perfect landscapes, as.well as wedding party group shots. It should be about 3-4 days till it arrives. I will be trying my air brush but I don't know if it will be to viscous. I might have to use a hand spray bottle of a wide camel hair brush.
Let me see your results in the FB Group!
Amazing tutorial Thank you for sharing. Where do you find the aluminum panels.
Can you tell me where I can purchase these sublimation substrates. I would love to cut my own. You are very talented BTW and I enjoy your videos very much.
This is great! 👍🏼 I have a few more questions. Are there any acrylic plates specifically designed for sublimation? The products I have looked at only mention that they are made of acrylic material. Should they be coated with polyester? If there are suitable acrylic plates, where can I find them? Alternatively, how can we print images on acrylic materials that are not suitable for sublimation? Thanks in advance.
Great demo, many thanks! You explained it so well, Jose.
I know nothing about sublimation but would love to make a few photo prints for my house.
I see printers at $200 and then this pro printer for $1500. Besides the size of paper, can anyone tell me what the difference is?
Is there a huge difference in quality between the two printers? I don't want to do this professionally.
12:41 - PRECISION colors, not PRECION. Typo.
Hi Jose, I don't know if you'll see this, but i was wondering if these sublimation machines would be ok to transfer onto an aluminum enclosure, used in small electronics (basically an aluminum box, that are typically about 1.5 inches tall and just a few inches width x length). It would barely use any of the heating surface, which is why I'm wondering if that's ok or if the surface of the heatingheating plate needs to come down all the way and cover most of the area it presses. Thanks!
Your video is blowing my mind. Have you tried to make the same procedure on aluminum folie or cans of soda?
You also show us all accuracy in puc mounting also e.i. Tyler marking, keyhole etc. Reallt you are good trainor
Wow amazing , can i ask where we can buy that heat press machine thank you so much 8:00
Hello Jose, wonderful video…..may I ask why you purchase the aluminum panels?
Super demo, thank you very much from a beginner in sublimation. Brilliant
Am interested in printing desk mounted nameplates with multiple different
Names on the plate. How would you cut the aluminium?
You would not. The factories use a heavy duty guillotine shear to cut the sheets after coating. Beyond most if not all home shops.
Really enjoy your content, can you please inform me where I can purchase the aluminum mount plate that was used?
Amazing, love your work, god bless you for teachings us, you’re doing gods work!!!
I’m debating planning on buying an old dry heat press off of Craigslist, there’s some 350’s around for cheap but I think half of my use would be sublimating my photos on to aluminum. Will the process work if the max temp only goes up to 350 degrees? Here’s hoping!!
great work...my suggestion is you should make a jig to always lay it straight in the middle of those pictures without you having to do any measuring...just let it land in the middle ...im a woodworker and think it should be very easy to make it and will save you tons of time and effort ....thats assuming you will be doing lots and lots more prints this way.
That is coming! This was just my very first try at this.
Jose Rodriguez looked beautiful if I had the equipment I would try it my self
It is a very nice process.
Great video - thank you! As an owner of some lovely art printed by this technique onto aluminum (or aluminium as we say in the UK), can anybody suggest a safe way to subsequently clean the print to remove dust and insect marks that accumulate over a period of time?
Beautifully explained video
Thank you 🙂
Hi Jose, thanks for all your great work for us photo printers. I currently sell my photos printed on a Canon Pro 10, with edits using LR & PS. I'm considering adding metal photo prints to my offerings. Not interested in conversion printers. Looking at the Epson SureColor F170 purpose made sublimation printer as a entry level sub printer vs. the Sawgrass 500. I'm primarily intersested in metal prints. The Sawgrass has very expensive ink, but is the Epson F170 have enough resolution to make a good print on 8.5x11. Sawgrass has more resolution but cost more on several levels. I looked at the Epson F570, great print size, and resolution but huge jump in price from the F170. Haven't seen a review of the F170 on your channel. Your thoughts? Thanks again for your work.
Hi, so what printer did you buy?
I see what you do... This is great... you mistakes is good., It makes me think about MY mistakes. thank you
Thank you for the explanation. unfortunately you missed an important part. How to prepare the paper print. Can we use just any paper for the sublimation? what resolution to be used. ? Thnx
I have some very special old photos in my home. Is there a way to get those copied to get aluminum prints done. I have an aluminum print I purchased. The colors are AMAZING!
I love it great work. Can you tell me what type of transfer paper you used? New to this.
Wow, thanks for the info. I am not sure if you mentioned but how is the image printed on? what kind of paper is used? Thanks in advance for the update.
You use a sublimation printer with sublimation inks onto sublimation transfer and then heat transferred using a heat press to aluminum coated with special polyester sublimation coating. The key word here is sublimation.
@@cheo1949 did you convert an inkjet to a subli printer? Would it take a fill up cartridge? Thanks. And awesome tutorial.
oh my got that is cool
Hey Jose, thank you so much for the detailed tutorial! do you know what about little keychains? how can I make small aluminum keychain with a picture I have drew? I barely fined anything about it. some keychain with a cartoon are made on a solid paper but it seems too easy to be damaged, in addition, i need to know how to create small pieces of aluminum and adjust their size to the pictures.
You buy the key chain blanks. Hundreds of different products are available for sublimation. Try www.conde.com
Yooo 🔥 sir you are amazing thank you for the knowledge
Loved your detailed instructions. New sub today.
I made a cardboard template measured out with center lines for faster setup on butting the standoff hanger on.
???? Not sure what you are describing here.
Thanks for getting back. Sublimation paper, is it a special paper for this process or the same as regular photo paper. I know nothing of this process.
Yes. It is a special type that of paper only to be used with sublimation inks. You mirror the image and then transfer it to the polyester fabric of polyester coated hard substrate with a heat press. Not an iron.
I seem to have missed the part on how you made the initial print for transfer. Special ink or paper? Thanks!
Nothing special other than you need an EPSON printer loaded with refillable carts loaded with suimation inks. Driver setting are presentation matte at high quality and you let the driver control color. You also have to either manually mirror the image or set the driver to do it. Remember that you will sandwich the transfer print face to face onto the substrate. Thus the need to mirror the image.
Stunning result Jose 😎
Thank you! I will show some more in my next video!
Hi Jose, great videos. I just got to know your video when research about sublimation image. Can you share what thckness of aluminum blank should be used and where can I buy them? Thank you so much for sharing knowledge.
You don't have much choice when you buy pre coated stock such as Chromaluxe which is the only substrate I recommend.
Absolutely awesome, thank you. if I wanted to do a belt buckle would the process be similar?
Only it is flat.
Thank u (-;
Can you recommend a press please?
Hi Jose, just a question. Does this aluminum printed image react well with Epoxy resin?
hi, can you share the equipment used to make that print, from the printer, heat press, etc...
Why did you choose less than highest quality? is that important for the process? also why are the the colors were dull on the paper print? and how did they turn so shiny and beautiful on the aluminum, gosh you got me into pro 1000 and now you are getting me into sublimation....!
You are the best in the trade.
Because highest quality causes the dots to over blend due to them wicking. So it actually produces worse results. Highest quality is meant for glossy media minimal for gain. Sublimation transfer paper is matte so you do not use the highest printer res.
Also because it is not ink jet ink but a totally different type of ink, it needs to.sublime to a gas as it is transfered. That's when the true colors emerge. It's a bit hard to judge the proper best settings as you gain saturation and density on the final transfer!
Is it difficult to turn the epson printer to this function?, I searched your videos but could not find one that details how to modify the printer and ink (dye) for this purpose.
You simply take an Epson printer of 4 to 6 colors and load refillables filled with matching number of sublimation inks. So a 4 color would use CMYK and a 6 color one would use C LC M LM Y K.
Sir Very good sublimation lesson in my life thank you very much
can you tell me what the sticky plate to hang on wall is called? and where I can purchase them? Thank you for sharing video awesome work!!
You can't. They were 3d printed for me by a friend.
what spray can we use to make the print more glossy ? Reply appreciated
THE CANON 1000 PRO PRINTS CAN BE USE TO TRAFER ON METAL
Saludos Mr. Rodriguez, I'm new to sublimation and im having some issues with blotching/dots after I press my images. How much pressure would you say you press it at? Also I've read that it can be too much ink on the paper, what paper settings do you use and what DPI are your images? Gracias in advance.
What knd of paper did you used? Is there any recommended ink to use for this or just any sublimation inks?
Hello Mr Jose can y pls tell me the printer y would use now after that time and which head press machine is good? I want to start a Business and its very hard to choose one of so many diffrent printers and so many diffrent head press machines, i just want good results on Aluminium (Chromaluxe) Plates
Okay...showed this to my mom...she is very crafty. She wants a class. Do you have them? Online? In your community? Thanks for this.
Sorry but I do not.
very nice job/work/info. thanks very much
hey Jose,
1) Is the pre press temperature and duration same for all sizes?
2) for the pre coated aluminium sheets, do we choose beforehand whether we want it glossy, satin or matte?
3) can you explain a bit more on the transfer papers
'thank you, hope to hear from you soon
warm regards
R. Gowtham
On an industrial best press there should be difference. On a small consumer press you would press for a longer time as the aluminum plates become larger or thicker. But temp stays the same. You need to experiment.
thanks and the other questions?
Can you tell me the type of metal, is it illuminium, and what type of paper press is used? I will thank you very much
Hello Jose...perhaps I missed it but from where do you buy your aluminum panels? Thank you.

Hii, is this normal paper or any special sublimation paper? Thank you in advance for your response.
Where do you get your photos? What software do you bring your photos in to? Mine are printing too dark. I have a brand new Epson Sure color f570 sub printer, a Mac and just learning photoshop.
great video JOSE!!!
Can i use a CANON PRO 100
for subliprice prins?
You mean sublimation? No. Only EPSON can be used for that.
@@cheo1949 Well EPSON has a some type of inks that can be even waterproof - I read something that in past , they are more pigments than inks it seems to me . and they have some different printing method ... - the heads and printing technology differs - I am not sure how exactly now ...
Hello beautiful work
Can you tell me where I can get metal with key hole at? Thank you
You mean a key hole on the actual aluminum plate? I don't think that exists.
Thank you so much for this
Heyo, I was wondering. What kind of sublimation transfers paper do you recommend? And what kind of sublimation ink do you recommend?
Got www.conde.com.
I use a brand called A-Sub
Awesome Video! I am looking to start printing photography as a business. What would be a decent printer you could recommend, something that can print some size. Maybe a few different printer options that can do this sublimation printing. I am new and have no clue where to begin. Also is epson the only printer this works or are there others?
In 17" wide class...Epson P800 Canon Pro1000 in 13" Canon Pro10 or EPSON P600.
@@cheo1949 Thank you so much for the quick reply and the recommendations. I am definitely going to look into them and evaluate my financial capabilities. THANK YOU!!!
@@cheo1949 Also, can you use any size heat press for printing that big and just do it in sections, or does the full image have to go in at same time requiring a big scale heat press?
You can't transfer in sections. You a heat press that is a few inches larger all around than the max job you are trying to do.
Jose Rodriguez thanks!!
Jose, thank you for sharing this process. Can you provide links to where you purchased this press? I am interested in learning this for some of my car photography which I think will look very nice.
I bought this one on EBAY. Cheap and within two months the switch burned out. Bought a better one from www.heatpressnation.com and never looked back. I did fix the first cheap one by replacing the on/off switch.

Sir may I ask you is the ink you used is the same ink for sublimating tshirts?
Can you theoretically print on both sides? Walgreens, Shutterfly, etc. don't seem to offer that as an option and that's what I need.
another great vid. did you use matte paper for the photo? , or is that a special paper for this process?
All sublimation transfer paper is the same. Matte.
Its always good to do one more line ,then figure things out lol
Thank you for sharing this knowledge ! :)
Hello Jose, I want to say thank you for being a godsend. May I also ask if it is possible to print on aluminium business cards since I'm looking to make my own. Will I need to use sublimation ink and just aluminium blanks to achieve this result?
Of course. You print you design reversed on transfer paper using sublimation inks on and EPSON printer. The aluminum blanks must also be coated with polyester to accept the sublimation of the inks.
Would I be able to use a handheld heat press such as Cricut EasyPress 2 Heat Press Machine to recreate what you did here?
Hi, Are you using Degrees celsius or fahrenheit ?
Great Video!
Where do you find the aluminum for this?
You can find Sublimation Aluminum on EBAY and Amazon. The best quality is called CHROMALUXE
Was the paper print used from a Normal printer?
hi, great vid by the way, i am just now getting into aluminum sublimation and i am driving myself crazy here with a issue, im getting smudge marks on all my aluminum sheets after im done, i have tried everything as far as time and pressure and degrees and still it just keeps coming back, looks like wtar droplets and some one tried to wipe this of,,, anyone can help with this??
too much pressure
What type of coat do you use before sublimation?
These Plates come precoated.
Jose Rodriguez where do you get precoated metal?
What is the name of this aluminum cutting machine? Sheets to round corners?
thank you for teaching. i use epson wf7710 with sublimation ink for tshirt printing can i use same printer for this. thank you
As long as the printer is set up for sublimation you can transfer to any substrates that is treated for sublimation meaning it is polyester material or polyester coated.
Hello Jose, videos are great! I am doing similar small sublimation pieces on brass. What printer paper and ink should I get?
Precisioncolors sub inks and A-Sub paper.
Thank you, I have a sawgrass printer, is this good or would you recommend going with an Epson or canon?
It's as good as it gets.
Where can we purchased the blank sublimation aluminiun sheet?
Hallo sir can i ask somethung, what type metal you use and what type of the paper ..thx before
thanks, fo the video I was wondering if you know how to glue the photo paper to the aluminium panel I have a big photo and I like to just glue it at home and then cover it with resin but don't know what kind of glue I should use or work on that.
If you mean epoxy I would just use a good strong spray adhesive. Not the kind that you can reposition.
What is the name of the machine you’re using?
Did you just use the sublimation ink onto the printer or was the printer modified for sublimation cartridge ink ?
Did you find out the answer?
Great video. A quick question. How durable are these prints? Will they hold up as long as a regular print?
Jose Rodriguez 2 seconds ago
Extremely durable. Much more than paper prints. Even the T-Shirt printer by sublimation are lasting through over a dozen washes so far with zero deterioration. Ink turns from a solid to a gas which permanently and from what I hear and read, molecularly bonds i months coating of fibers. My mugs are microwaved and washed in not soap and water and again, zero deterioration. I am sold.
Jose Rodriguez Thank you very much for your quick reply. You have an amazing depth of knowledge about printers. Great work.
Thank you!
Is that paper same as Heat Transfer ?
what is the substance that makes the aluminum accept the image? do you make the sub blanks? i am new to sublimation, i want to cut my own aluminum and prepare blank to accept my image. i know the blank needs to be coated with a poly based coating
ive been dying to diy treat white aluminum sheets with a decent clear coat & heat transfer with a iron if not a heat press. its plausible.
Not an iron!!! You definitely need a neat press.
need Sublimation papper use too ?
greetings Joe, great video. is that weather proof? can that plate be displayed outside? thanks!
No. Probably resistant but not weatherproof.
