    Bob and Brad, I usually love your stuff, but I have to tell you… I have tried everything from a large wedge to a thin folded towel, and every weight and variation in between. I ALWAYS wake up with lower back pain, no matter how I try to support myself from a lie-flat position. I bought an expensive, medium firm, mattress composed of dual layers of pocket springs with a latex top. Same result. It just breaks my heart when I see you trot out the orthodoxy about wedges and pillows. In the few times I've slept in a recliner, I stayed asleep and I awoke without pain. How can that be bad? Besides, the recliners you can get from medical suppliers often have adjustable lumbar support. In addition, a recliner with separate motors for head and feet will allow you to get into a position that will decrease snoring or elevate your feet to reduce oedema. A chair that could achieve even two out of three things for me would be a huge advantage. Nothing can beat the comfort of being cradled in a decent recliner. the chair you showed in your video does none of these things.

      @iamunce Hi I enjoyed your comment. Have you found a great sleeping recliner that you could recommend me? I also have mid back pain and must sleep on my back to minimize it. I don't yet feel it necessary to have a "lift" or "assisted exit" chair yet, just something nice to sleep in. Thanks.

      Same; lower back pain every night. I bought 2500€ memory foam mattress... Still I get best, painless sleep in my cheap recliner 😵

      They said that it puts your back in a flexed forward posture, which is true, and is also unhealthy for you back.
      You get used to sleeping like that and have pain if you lay flat, because your are training your body into a detrimental position (forward flexed).
      What you’re describing is a self fulfilling prophecy… you sleep better in a recliner because you are adapted to it, not because it is better for you.

    @Bob & Brad, Hi Bob & Brad, I have Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. I've tried sleeping in a bed and it's way too painful for me to get comfortable to sleep. I have to sleep in my recliner to get sleep. I actually sleep very well in my recliner and I wake up feeling very rested. I was diagnosed with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis about 10 years ago.

      I’ve been sleeping in the recliner for the last few years. I put a bit of wood under the front of the recliner so that I lay back a bit more when reclined and it’s so much better than sleeping in the bed. Easier to get up in the morning helps a lot with hernia pain and back pain and hip pain and the chair is perfectly contoured to the body. Where is the bed offers no support whatsoever.

    The position on the table is exactly how I have to lay on the floor almost 24/7 when my sciatica is active. It is the only position I can be in without terrible pain. I use the hassock instead of the block.
    My Chiropractor, pain meds, the shots in the spine do not touch it unless I live on the floor. When the back pain lets up a bit, CBD helps a bit.
    I have much empathy for anyone suffering with back issues. Thanks B&B!

    Good video! I sleep in a (VERY EXPENSIVE) La-Z-Boy rocking recliner every night, on account of my COPD. I can breathe easier in this recliner than the bed, when I would be using a wedge under my back. I can't quite get the bed head elevated enough with my bed, even with a tall wedge.

    I have sciatica and my weight has been a problem (getting this resolved with my endocrinologist). I weigh 265 and sleep on a couch for comfort. I have a recliner, but it kills my lower back. Adding a small roll pillow to my lower back helps right away. It’s made of memory foam and has made a difference. It fills that gap nicely.

    I saw the thumbnail on this video and wasn't sure if this was a joke. I'm a short overweight woman. I've been sleeping on my recliner for years. I cannot sleep flat. The pain to get up off the bed and walk is excruciating. I'm thinking of saving up for an adjustable bed with a memory foam mattress. It's super expensive but I don't see another way to stop sleeping in my recliner. Now my legs are restless. I wore a Fitbit to check my sleep patterns and I wake up over 20 times. I wake up every time I have to turn over. I can't even sleep in one position for too long. I become stiff. I feel like The Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz. My weight didn't cause my backpain but it has made it worse. My back pain however did cause my weight gain because I can no longer ride my bike, skate, go to the gym. I had a car accident a few years ago and that was the beginning of me sleeping on the recliner.

  • @lokipokey

    I'm confused. Sleeping in bed with pillows or a wedge under your knees causes your pelvis to tuck and flattens/rounds your back inward. But you're saying that in a recliner, you should use lower lumbar support to keep your back swayed/curved in just the opposite direction. Which is it? I have sciatica, scoliosis, spondolysthesis, and arthritis throughout my lower spine and sacroilliac. The only way I can sleep without pain (or pain meds) is either to have 2 pillows under my legs with my pelvis tilted forward and my back flattened, or in a recliner.
    Duloxitine/Cymbalta has also helped the pinched nerves in my back.
    Tell my younger self not to have ridden so many horses, especially the one whose owner said was the sweetest, gentlest thing but turned out to be a bucking bronco. That was the back killer. Landed hard on my tailbone from a significant height.

      if you have watched many videos about sitting and and lying down for back pain you'll notice that there is no one best solution for all.. the secret is to understand what position is giving you pain and preventing you from resting you should avoid that.. during pain period rest is king, therefore sleep is emperor, whatever works for you as long as you get that well night sleep - DO IT!..
      but of course movement is also needed it circulates the blood and promote healing.. whatever stretches and exercise that you are doing that do not exacerberate the symptomps do it too

      @@captainmorgan5449 had to quit sleeping in the recliner about a month ago because my back & neck were beginning to become problematic.
      Sleep with 4 large pillows to prop me up from waist up in bed lately.
      Side sleeper too- pillows under shoulders have been essential to prevent impingement pain- cannot for the life of me fall asleep on backside.
      Found an old obus-forme back support when unpacking decor- slept in the chair with that, kept my spine aligned nicely, woke up feeling ok.
      Hope you find a sleep solution to help get a better night's rest asap🤞🙏

    Bob and Brad, many of my patients have orthropnea secondary to sleep apnea. Many of these patients cannot sleep laying down, it it is also a potential sign of congestive heart failure. The inability of sleeping in a bed has many negative side effects both orthopedic and may actually be a sign of cardiopulmonary issues.Sleep is important , when you sleep well you hurt less. Thanks for all your informative work you both do. Thomas Fleishman RRT.

    I posted this somwhere else too. But my ancestors used to sleep in bedboxes in which you were always sleeping with your back raised upwards like this or even more steeply. You wouldnt slump as your feet were against the wall.
    I'm looking to replicate this myself and hopefully get some really good sleep.

    Ughhhhh. After having right side surgery to repair my labrum, hill-sachs lesion, torn bicep, and a broken humerus at 26 I could NOT sleep. I sleep on my side. I also CAN'T sleep sitting up. I'm against pain killers 100% after having shingles when I was 21 (Advice...DON'T clear a 30 foot jump on a bike then hit a root on the trail aand bounce into a tree at like 26mph) and becoming dependent on percocet. After basicially becoming addicted to the crap I wish I'd never taken it. After I was out of pain meds I couldn't sleep in a recliner or sitting up at all. I always sleep on my side, and that recovery was horrible. I can't sleep sitting up. It took like 10 pillows to wedge me in a way that my right shoulder had no pressure on it.
    Love the channel guys. It's awesome to know what to do to rehab and strengthen all of these various injuries. I recently also dislocated my left shoulder just throwing a football :( My ortho surgeon told me I have hyperlax joints and that's why I keep getting hurt. Would you guys agree with that? My mom also had a loose shoulder that she dislocated while surfing. Is this a genetic thing?
    Can the 2 most famous PTs on the internet help strengthen both of my shoulders so I can play sports again without needing more surgery?! I wish I lived near you guys. My last 2 PTs sucked.

    It depends on your recliner!!! That old 1970's Archie Bunker recliner they are using doens't lay down flat enough for any use! In my La-z-boy, I can lie back pretty far, and put a pillow under my thighs and get into an almost identical position to a zero gravity chair. For me, it works best if I sleep in the bed on my side for about 6 hours, then get up and spend 1.5 -2 hours in the recliner.

In bed I snore too much, wake up with a foggy brain, my legs hurt, my neck hurts, my back hurts etc etc. I also toss & turn less while on my couch! I have severe back pain I am having a huge problem of continuously falling out of my bed 345 times a night and during the day I don’t know what the problem is I just seem to slide out and wake up on the floor I tried buying a bed rail I have an adjustable bed and it literally destroyed my bed to the point I had to actually buy a new bed I tried a different type of rail but all it does is move and I end up on the floor again I am desperate to figure out a solution to this problem. I’m thinking about buying a lift chair to sleep in every now and then I’ve slept in my recliner while it’s OK I can’t imagine doing it for more than one or two times .
    It’s going to the point where it’s difficult for me to get up I’m having more and more problems because of a two amputation and sores on my feet but to get up from the floor the only way I can get up is to actually push off with my damaged feet so I need a solution desperately do you know of any bed rails that will go on an adjustable bed without tearing them up?
    I there’s also been walking in a surgical shoe where my hips are uneven I’m having a lot of pain to the point I’m having trouble walking or standing without shooting pain and foot pain any and all tips would be greatly appreciated because I’m just going downhill very fast and I’m only 42 years old .
    Also thought about going to physical therapy I really enjoy doing pool physical therapy but the problem is most pools around here are shallow and I’m nearly 6 foot tall is only one pool that will do physical therapy but I’m also legally blind and I’m having problems finding anybody that will physically get into the pool with me to do a class or a therapy session because I don’t have enough visual capability to see what’s happening. I know that there’s not a lot of tips for this but I just wanted you to understand what I’m dealing with I’ve also tried getting a arrow with Gene to try to exercise on I bought a bike but I found it very very painful so I have a $300 bike sitting in my back room

    I only buy Lazy Boy recliners because they are comfortable, but firm, multiple positions you can’t get from other recliners and they last better than any other recliner I’ve tried. I haven’t been able to sleep in a bed for years. I tried multiple wedges and different types of mattresses.
    I keep hearing McKenzie, when I was in therapy they avoided McKenzie because typically caused more pain. Arching back causes a bigger pinch, and bone on bone type pain. :(
    Could you mention non-McKenzie methods or explain who might not be able to use that method. Thank you ❤️

    • @elaineculbert8594
      @elaineculbert8594 4 года назад +1

      Cheri Madlom - The McKenzie technique involves ‘extension’ - which is arching backward as when doing the Mini Pushup (sometimes called the Floppy Pushup) which is very helpful for bulging disc problems. If it increases your pain, you most likely have facet joint issues or SI pain (degenerative disc) so ‘flexion’ (bending forward) eases your pain. It is very important to obtain an accurate diagnosis first from a good physiotherapist and be shown the proper exercises for your condition.

      Elaine Culbert. It’s been several years since I’ve seen a doctor and several years before that when I received therapy. You nailed it, always feel best bending forward, horrible pain arching. I have spinal cord stimulator. I’ve had faucet injections. I think I remember Them saying degenerative and stenosis. I have ankylosis spondylitis. I never understood what McKenzie was, just knew it caused pain. The only way I get any decent sleep is upright in a recliner. Thank you

    • @elaineculbert8594
      @elaineculbert8594 4 года назад

      Cheri Madlom - You probably have noticed that when walking uphill, it hurts less than walking downhill. This is because (when coming down the hill) the back is, unknowingly, arching backwards somewhat so you remain upright and not tumble down the hill. Again, arching backwards is jamming the facets closer together which hurts. You mention facet injections, are you referring to, perhaps, cortisone shots, or a nerve block or a procedure called rhizolysis. Rhizolysis usually involves an anesthetist cauterizing certain nerves that lead to the facets, thus, stopping the nerves from telling the brain you are hurting. It sounds unpleasant but it isn’t at all.

    I had to start sleeping in a recliner in 2008. I couldn't sleep on my side, stimach or flat on my back even with pillows under my knees. Last December a neighbor gave me a hospital bed and I am doing better. I just don't sleep for long no matter where because of the pain. I am lucky to get 2 to 3 hours.

    Beds are unhealthy for many reasons.Probably responsible for a huge amount of back problems. Also since there is alot of room to move you will move from a back friendly position to a harmful one.
    After a lower disc herniation I would wake up in my bed in agonizing spasms. i moved to a double recliner where I can alter my position at will with pillows.
    I can also lie across the sofa with my legs up on the armrest to take the stress off the lumbar.
    I think the days of the bed are coming to an end with sleeping chairs incorporating massage, heat, cooling etc.

    For me, that was one of the worst thing about recovering from a laparoscopy in my abdomen. Both of my shoulders were in severe pain from the gas the surgeon inserted into my abdomen and the gas went straight to my shoulders. And, I also had severe pain in my abdomen. I couldn't sleep in my bed and I couldn't get down onto the floor either. As a result, the only way I could sleep was in a recliner. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. And, my doctor's response was to up the amount of pain killers. *sighs*

    You left out one major point: not everyone is physically able to stand up from a bed, or use a graa bar to pull up from a bed. As a stroke survivor who needs assistance to rise from a bed... I use a zero gravity power lift recliner so I can stand up in the morning without any assistance, makin me more independent. If I could afford it I'd purchase one of those expensive lift beds.

    A wedge is no good for side sleepers.

    • @elaineculbert8594
      @elaineculbert8594 4 года назад

      Fern Brisot - That’s why Brad showed its use while lying on his back. A wedge comes in handy, though, when changing positions. For side sleepers, always put a pillow between your knees as it helps keep the hips aligned (“stacked” on top of each other) which helps with back pain.

      @@elaineculbert8594 Yes...2 Year ago, after MRI , I was diagnose with DDD with tingling leg pain on my left side. After physical therapy I felt better and tingling went away. I am a side sleeper...I am going thru the same thing with my right side now. Will have MRI within a week. I can not sleep as I was a side sleeper and I am afraid to lay on my left from fear of re injuring it. When I am up and walking...no tingling, If I lay down on my side, tingling.
      I tried on the back but that set my nerves off too, plus I feel as if I will choke because I snore. Maybe a recliner temporary and pray that MRI does not reveal a HD.

    Yikes. Whether or not this is effective, do yourself a favor and eliminate your back pain. In almost every case, back pain develops due to sitting too much. This position puts your quads in a constant state of contraction. This, in turn, makes your pelvis tip forward and elongates your hamstrings. This forward tilt causes the pain. You can release the tension in your quads with the following video. Remember that just like a runner or weightlifter needs time and reps to gain endurance and strength, it takes some time to train muscles to release as well. But once you do, your relief will get faster and more permanent. Here's the vid:: ruclips.net/video/MI0SGjzt3R4/видео.html
