I believe this is one of the most complex violin pieces. I've listened to it quite a lot now. The complexity, the sadness and beauty in it stays fascinating. There are times where I listen to this masterpiece every day.

I first heard this composition, specifically that part from about 1.30 to 2.15, used on the soundtrack of a BBC TV documentary about the 100 Years War, and found it so spine-tingling and atmospheric in the context that I had to find out what it was!

This is true ensemble musicianship between soloist and orchestra in a work which can sometimes be treated like a concerto by the unwary. I agree with others that Ms Samuelsen just about hits perfection here and seeing the performance helps because her attention to the conductor and sections of the ensemble is evident. There is no showing off here but a fantastic team effort instead.
There is something quite unique with Mari. I have been connected to her talent today. I do not see a separation between her and her violin. It seems to me that they are having a conversation together. Really extraordinary.

closest to the best recordings I've heard, thought that the actual soundtrack is from 1984 record where it was performed by Gidon Kremer - violin, Keith Jarrett - piano - this being my all time favourite this concert sounds exactly as I like it
I've listened to the original ECM recording of Fratres dozens and dozens of times. This is the only performance of the piece that I've ever heard that doesnt feel just like a poor copy of what that recording has etched in my memory, thus feels fresh and emotive and wow, just, wow. Edit: actually I mean the Naxos recording with the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and Tamás Benedek.
Surely one of the best renditions of this piece. Mari is monstrous.

Ms. Samuelsen was obviously moved by Pärt's ethereal music and it definitely shows in her superb performance.
