    This is proof that you don't need grand sweeping epic pieces written for a 100+ instrument orchestra to move the spirit.
    Sometimes elegance does it too. And sometimes it does it better.

      Well said!
      I first heard this piece in the BBC documentary Auschwitz: The Nazis and the final solution . In that context ( laid over the imagery of Auschwitz and it's victims ) the music is dripping with heartache and a strange beauty. It is an incredible piece of music that would make the classical masters envious.

    I played this at my grandma's funeral 10 years ago. The other day my wife and I were watching the good place series finale and the song came on. My wife didn't know me back then so she was confused when I broke down crying.

    Either the cellist is playing sharp or the piano is tuned slightly flat in a somewhat disheartening manner. However, when you focus on this, the distinction between what you hear and what you think leads you to contemplate the intonation difference between the cello and the piano when you hear a sharp or flat note. Crescendos on the piano consistently elevate the notes the pianist plays towards a slightly sharper tone. This issue is not related to the pianist. It's just like a rule. With the cellist, there's an observable tendency to ascend towards sharpness whenever a scale is played ascending. By not meticulously notating every nuance in the score, the composer gracefully leaves certain decisions to the musician. My slight perception of flatness in the piano and the cello's tendency towards sharpness in its resonance might stem from a resemblance not to the depth of the performance but to the simplicity of my personal story. Or the piano's flatness reflects the position from which I perceive myself as if the cello would seek to fill in the composition as masterfully as possible. Yet, in this piece, the cellist has conveyed a thought-provoking emotional state through her vibratos. Thanks to Ana Cláudia Serrão and Filipe Melo!

      I’m glad this beautiful performance made you think about emotional resonance, but the instruments are both perfectly tuned and played. This is one of the best performances of this piece I’ve ever heard.

      I think that the Cello works so well with the register the notes played on the piano.

      I agree, it is a bit too fast as if it has been made to fit something specific, perhaps a film score, it needs to be slower, more contemplative.

    My only criticism is the use of vibrato in the cello part, and only because Pärt wrote in his tintinnabulum style (bell-like style) across all his works, especially this one.
    But I don't give a dash about Pärt's principles right now because this is beautiful. Such control in both the piano and cello parts…

    • @alexandrosgoulas
      @alexandrosgoulas 6 лет назад

      Could you please explain me what you meant with "the use of vibrato in the cello part"? As a violinist I'm really interested in comprehending how this music should be played according to its composer :)
      Also, isn't the "bell-like style" referred to the piano? At least this is what I found on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintinnabuli

    • @ternitamas
      @ternitamas 6 лет назад +2

      the bell like part is supposed to be the piano not the cello, so that makes no sense, the vibrato is fine
