Glass's music is just perfect for movies! It's so easy to image a dramatic scene montage, no sound, just the moving images, with this music covering over it. I imagine this piece representing a journey across an empty landscape. The octaves in the bass remind me of a horse's canter.
This sort of shocked me because I was aware of the 10 Etudes he did many years ago, and I had JUST seen a recent video Mr. Glass made explaining the history of his Etudes, and how in the last for months in his old age made to finish the last 4 of his intended 20 etudes. But my shock was that when I bean watching the video, I had only read "Etude 9." So when the #20 Etude came up, I had not idea what it was. And the sound was strangely modern, yet old-school Debussian as well. And, yes, she is a very amazing pianist, who understand nuance. Especially with these types of compositions. Mr. Clark, you might take an interest in my color-shape associations which I have developed into a honeycomb keyboard and a complete music theory in color-shapes. I'm here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_ Cheers!
Thank you Maki. I love your tempo of No. 9...absolutely sublime. And No. 20...transcendental. Thank you. The Bosendorfer is stunning...much better suited to Philip Glass than a Steinway D.
I do wish that the TV companies would put some of the many thousands of these excellent, enriching youtube videos on in between regular programming. The high standard of musicianship and artistry as exemplified here by Maki Namekawa deserves a much wider audience and it would be great to see something of genuine worth and substance being given a much more prominent place- in our cultural diet If one of them were put on each day at a certain time I feel sure that it would not strain the concentration spans of the viewers too much-it may even encourage some to take up/resume playing a musical instrument-it had this effect on me and inspired by some of the wonderful artists who so graciously share their talents with us, I bought myself a decent Electric piano (which I work hard at each day!)My piano is, by far, the best investment I have made for many years.
Another gem in the m, many treasures we have from Mr. Glass and all of those brilliant artists who show them for us. Sometimes, it is too much for me and I have kind of take a break to re-orient myself. It is really transporting for me.
What an elegant woman, both in her performance and her appearance. The music is all subtlety, abeyance, contrition. And she conveys this flawlessly. Bravo, Maki Namekawa. Bravo.

Glass used this same melody for his Aguas Amazonas, performed by Uakti, a Brazlian group that creates their own instruments. So if you like this (i.e. etude #9), look up the Uakti performance. It's also on RUclips.
The feel of this performance is exquisite. My favourite so far. I thought Chubb did the best but I don't think this performance of these two Etudes can be beat really.
Why does this recording skip some 60% of Etude no. 20? At 5:03, the video skips three full pages of the sheet music and picks up from the second bar of rehearsal mark 21. (I have the score of these Etudes and have played this piece many times.) If you want to hear the complete performance, check out the performance by Vikingur Olafsson. With all due respect to Ms. Namekawa, I find Olafsson's rendition to be even more refined.
Indeed, makes me think of a lovely combination of Brahms and Poulenc; pure nostalgia, pondering over things and times gone by (and Shostakovich looks over the shoulder): Glass is a genuine classic composer !
Brahms + Poulenc,a very apt comparison. Romantic but subtle. Especially nr. 20 which is less minimalistic, has a lot of variations. What a sublime atmosphere in these pieces. What an inspired and novel composer.
stunning playing. The music is so simple and so difficult at the same time. One plays the notes and it sounds awful. But if one plays the music it is transcendent in beauty and depth, not an easy feat. One thing that is curious though is that according to my score she skips about 3 pages of the middle of the Etude no. 20? But just love it any way.
Hmm what? Short of some weird scratching noises at 1:18-1:22 and other parts, I don't hear any audio artifacts during the parts where she's at the keyboard. And I'm using Sennheiser HD 598's.
Am I the only one being allergic to videos being labeled AMAZING ? It's a beautiful video, nice music being splendidly played, but what exactly is AMAZING about it ? This seems just a cheap trick to draw attention... And I must admit it works, as I clicked it largely because of this (and to rant about it, of course).

Original tempo would be ♩=140 A different piece? Who cares about Phil Glass... Video editing consequently out of sync. On the picture : It's simply, beautiful and the filters are very communicative. The cue with the car brings some private aroma into the whole. I really enjoyed!
I hear ragtime, THE ENTERTAINER, at the outset of Numbers 9; of course P. Glass "does his thing" but Scott Joplin might enjoy a turn at the piano. Whoever thought the upscale car ad production was a good idea was wrong - bad bad not good. And the shifting camera perspectives are pricelessly worthless.
It's a more sensitive performance of these pieces than they deserve, as cheap as they are, or would they ever get from the composer himself who never was much of a pianist. But boy, the instant you need a stylist, a visually striking location, great lighting, and a skilled cinematographer to convince people to listen to a recording, the music is showing its many limitations. I give them 20+ years in print, and then just a footnote in a history book of the century. They won't be performed beyond that, like so many others.

Absolutely resplendent; Namekawa's involvement is total. Her interpretation is superb.

Qienes interpretan las obras de Glass están a la altura de impresionantes composiciones.
Quelle grâce, quelle douceur, elle ne joue pas du piano, elle caresse le piano et cet instrument le lui rend bien. Un plaisir.
i love all of this, the video, the music, Maki Namekawa... Philip Glass.... Oh Philip Glass.... owner of my dreams... xD
What a beautiful performance 🎭
!!!
Thank you Maki. I love your tempo of No. 9...absolutely sublime. And No. 20...transcendental. Thank you. The Bosendorfer is stunning...much better suited to Philip Glass than a Steinway D.
Strangely one can love Mozart and still enjoy this ... minimalistic music.
Best Glass recording ever. Composer and pianist well matched.

will never happen, they require sleepers, not awoken consciousness, they want to sell, not nurture, and thus their downfall...
You're one of the greatest composers of all times. Thanks for bringing us into the modern age

Just saw Phillip Glass et al perform his complete Piano Etudes at Purdue University Loeb Theater on a new Steinway D Concert Grand piano STUNNING!
Wow I was there too 👍
What an elegant woman, both in her performance and her appearance. The music is all subtlety, abeyance, contrition. And she conveys this flawlessly. Bravo, Maki Namekawa. Bravo.
Gorgeous combination of music and images. Beautiful.
LOVE #9, OMG so well done! I especially like the video clips of her in the car. Captures the emotion perfectly and leaves it open for interpretation.
Beautiful
Powerful interpretation of a wonderful Etude , all of them so great , thank you Maki Namekawa ♥♥♥♥♥
Out of this world! Amazing
Well played and well shot too. Now release a blu-ray so we can buy it!
This is Bösendorfer sound art! thanks Maki & Philip, great performance
Incredible.
wow....beautiful music, cinematography!
Brilliant.
I love this interpretation. That’s art, it’s not just one static thing, but something to be explored
I love the tempo.

This piece can take many faces. I play it faster than Maki and it sounds completely different. Her interpretation is wonderful as always.

i just *love* this warm, mellow boesendorfer tone. so much warmer than those harsh, metallic and loud mass products from america and japan.
Amazing
Beautiful piece, wonderful video. Glass' piano work is incredible.
Fantastico

Exquisite.

grande, grande.
Number 20 especially is very beautiful.

Maki is one of the best interpreters of Philip Glass etudes ❤️❤️❤️
Well if Philip Glass says it’s amazing I’m certainly going to listen
Maki's the girl for me
She's mastered PG's etudes. And she's pretty.
Works perfectly for me.
Sexist remark there

Yep.

Alison Marschner Oh-oh. Looks like someone is TRIGGERED.

Same as anything by Satie. The feel is what is hard to get right, notes are relatively easy - but it's not notes we're after.
this is amazing!
Grande!!!
Those lush low notes on the 'dorfer
forgot to take the audio out of the first clip in the car
hello Orange Mountain music, how is it possible to record this masterpiece on a double album with very audibile hiss all over the place?
Hmm what? Short of some weird scratching noises at 1:18-1:22 and other parts, I don't hear any audio artifacts during the parts where she's at the keyboard. And I'm using Sennheiser HD 598's.
on the video it's almost perfect, on the album itself it's audible
on the albums????
i'm a pianoplayer myself and i can hear those things for sure
i understand that, and damper scratches are perfectly ok with me, but i'm reading mixed reviews on this album...
I don't hear any hissing on my itunes album- but I have the latest iphone. Maybe your iphone is very old
Even for Glass's music there is always Asian better than anyone , amazing arrangement

I imagine Philip Glass's music FOR MOVIE. NO?
+Cecilia Istocaci Yes, this music has great soundtrack potential.
Philp Glass has wonderful movie soundtracks: The Truman Show, The Hours, Notes for a Scandal, Mishima, Koyaniskatsi. Happy listening!
That's where it belongs very tedious on it's own.
He did many soundtracks. I love for example those ones for "hamburger hill ", "candyman"

Must be something wrong with the recording: I keep hearing the same thing again and again.
Whoosh. Those were the subtle variations flying right over your head.I am sure you were trying to be funny or clever or something trollish.
Whoosh!
it is indeed very simple, but there are many small changes here and there
jajajaj, seem that you know nothing about the good music, you are loser!!!
that's what makes it so interesting and pleasing to me - following the changes. that's the story line. wonderful composer.
