    I've noticed that Frank always pairs himself with artists that are great storytellers. People shallowly complain about John Romita Jr's blocky characters, but, the man can tell a story and sell action scenes. Man Without Fear, I've reread so many times.
    Also Bill Sienkiewicz is one of the rare comic artists who uses his stylization to bring you in the story, when most stylized comics do the opposite.

    With all due respect to Stan Lee: making him a blind lawyer that fights crime at night was not a new idea at all. The golden age pulp hero the Black Bat was already there. Tony Quinn is a DA fighting the mob. They blind him and he gains the ability to see in the dark as he embarks on a quest to bring them down.

    Daredevil 182-184 are incredibly underrated. The death of Elektra was such a psychological effect on Matt, he unknowingly let Kingpin Imported some drugs. Consequently, a girl is killed, and a drug dealer is unscathed by Matt's lawyering (dealer had pacemaker). The series pits Daredevil against the Punisher. EPIC.
    Daredevil 169 is an incredible one shot issue that fleshes out the epic rivalry between DD and Bullseye. Without it, DD 181 is insignificant.
    Daredevil> Batman.
    Unknown to most, dark, gritty DD pre dates Batman the Dark Knight returns. Batman in essence is a rip off of DD. Unchallenged praise for Miller's Batman confirms this.....Hush) You do not want Batman Marks have their hero inferior to a far more realistic and psychologically tormented character!
    Daredevil Is a criminally underrated super hero.

    Being a huge fan of DareDevil, I must say his return to the screen was way over-due. he's a very unique and HIGHLY interesting character and I love how they sett the tone completely apart from the rest. We've seen so many tones in Marvel movies done excellently over the years, the serious tone, grim tone, funnier tone and the balance between serious AND funny tone. But this looks gritty as hell, just the way the character should be and I'm highly anticipated for it!
    Btw great recommendations! Love and War, Born Again, and The Man Without Fear are absolute freaking masterpieces! :) Definitely have to check those other gems out. Liked and Subscribed!

    (DD SEASON 2 SPOILERS) With fisk seemingly connecting DD to Matt (and requesting his files) and Matt revealing himself to Karen it seems its all set for Born Again on season 3!

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  8 лет назад +8

      +EvilDead Ash - I'm thinking Born Again would have to be season 4, at the earliest. Karen has to run off and do some hard living for awhile before the table is set for Born Again.

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  8 лет назад +5

      EvilDead Ash That's what upsets me most about the needless Punisher prison stuff from season 2: It kind of takes the wind out of the sails of a 'Devil in Cell Block D' story arc. what should have been an 'Oh shit, Punisher's going to prison' moment... will instead be a 'Haven't we seen this already?' moment.

    • @crashfalso
      @crashfalso 8 лет назад +2

      ***** Yeah,i also felt that way when they "killed" off Elektra.While i know she will comeback somehow with that blood tombstone the hand was preparing,i feel like it would have been better saved for when the show actually has Bullseye.Seeing Nobu being the one that recreates such a shocking moment in comic book history kinda ruins it a bit. Speaking of season 2,would you do a review of it like you did with season 1? it would be awesome!

    • @stuartleighton
      @stuartleighton 8 лет назад

      +The Rageaholic Would be amazing if they make the Born Again storyline. I read it about a year ago and it is by far my favorite graphic novel of all time, closely followed by The Crow. Somehow though, I cannot see how Charlie Cox can pull it off. I personally find him too wooden and a bit like a wet fart in see-through plastic underpants. I do however find Vincent D'Onofrio to be a great Kingpin and am looking forward to seeing him play a bigger part in Season 3. More Punisher is needed too.. a great addition to the series.

    • @TheDukeOfTumwater
      @TheDukeOfTumwater 8 лет назад

      I think that Season 3 will be about the ressurection of Elektra, Bullseye, and perhaps Melvin Potter finally becoming Gladiator. Like Raz0r said, I think that we will have to wait until Season 4 or 5 for Born Again. I can see Karen not being able to live with Matt being Daredevil, so she runs off, gets into porn, and becomes a junkie. As a matter of fact, I can see the opening of Born Again being a great season finale where we see Kingpin finding out Daredevil's secret identity.

      +rigren0121 I think what happened was that he was never the same after Sin City, because he never stopped writing Sin City. He constantly tried writing everything he worked on after it like he would Sin City, and it...really didn't work.

  • @Adorni
    @Adorni 2 года назад +4

    So, I'm coming _very_ late to the table on this, but I disagree with Miller on his stance regarding Superman and Wonder Woman. That's not to say I don't get it, but I don't agree with it. Heroes like Superman and Spider-Man are people who desperately need a human connection to keep them grounded. To keep them from being their "persona" for too long. And while it's true that both have something of that in their respective parental figures, ultimately they need a partner who can keep them firmly entrenched in the lives of the people they fight to protect when wearing their costumes.
    That doesn't mean that you can't have a bad writer (or even a good writer) who doesn't find themselves quibbling over what to do with these "normal people," and I think Frank is one of those writers- I don't think he has the interest to write Superman with Lois. I think it would bore him to tears. And because of that, I don't think I'd _want_ him to write Superman with Lois. But that doesn't mean that Superman being with Lois is a bad idea, in and of itself. Similarly, that doesn't mean every hero needs this. Batman is a guy who has lots of more human connections through people like Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Leslie Thompkins, and other side-characters in the Bat-Family. Further, unlike Clark and Peter, Bruce isn't really a "normal person," nor does he _want_ to be, for the most part. Because of that, he fares better with love interests like Catwoman and Talia. Likewise, Matt Murdock - while obviously carrying plenty of baggage - is not someone who would benefit from a Mary Jane or a Lois Lane, and as such benefits more from having an Elektra.
    Long story short, I think it's important to consider the type of character when looking at their relationship options, and to not just try and take a "one size fits all" approach to this kind of thing. I don't think Frank is wrong, period. Just that his approach isn't a good fit for characters like Superman. Otherwise, really good stuff, and I'll have to pick up "Man Without Fear" at some point.

    I've watched this episode probably 5 times, and it has inspired me in many ways actually. It certainly helped to kick off my obsessive collection of graphic novels, and also reignited my teenage love of Daredevil comics. At 41 years old, the wife is scratching her head as to why 4-5 different graphic novels are getting delivered every week. I'm sure she is thinking that my midlife crisis is kicking in, although that happened a good few years ago. Thanks Razorfist, I now pretty much have all these, just need to get Love's Labour Lost and Redemption in book form. When I head back home to UK for my month holiday this summer I'll be able to finally get my hands on the Bendis and Brubaker runs, which I now own in their entirety. Cannot wait, just ploughing through the Miller Omnibus, which is nothing short of fucking awesome and I'll definitely reread. Born Again has always been in my top three of all time, just fantastic. Just wondering though, I don't have Mark Waid's run but have heard good things generally about it. What exactly don't you like about it?
    Your channel is great mate, and love the humour.. especially the Metal Mythos (Motorhead, Queen, Iron Maiden). Keep em coming!

    I feel like part of the reason Marvel took so much risk with Daredevil's lore (pretty much all the dark stuff Frank Miller did) is because when characters aren't that popular, they take greater risks, i.e. Deapool. Before Joe Kelly got his hands on the character, all he had was being a "Spider-Man who kills people". The insane, over-the-top, and fourth-wall-breaking behavior we all associate with Deadpool nowadays is thanks to Joe Kelly, based on what I know.

    • @saidi7975
      @saidi7975 9 лет назад +5

      Actually Joe Kelly developped what Fabian Nicieza has set up... and later Fab rolled with what Kelly has perfected. And DP , as he started as, never really reminded of Spidey. The jokes were already there but he was a friggin' monster...

    • @d.c.stranded7134
      @d.c.stranded7134 9 лет назад +3

      saidi7975 that's what I meant when I said "Spider-Man who kills people", he cracked jokes but wasn't much of a good person.

    • @saidi7975
      @saidi7975 9 лет назад

      D.C. Stranded No problem, I get that, but what I meant by disassociating Early Wade from Spider-Man is that while it is the general consensus, my personal reading experience did not give me that impression.
      And you can definitely crank the " not much of a good person" notion up to the next level. Deadpool was a horrifying man (and stays that way for a long time !) with a harsh redemption .

    • @d.c.stranded7134
      @d.c.stranded7134 9 лет назад

      saidi7975
      To b honest I've barely read any Deadpool comics. Most of the info I have on the character comes from research and second hand information. So, what do you mean when you say harsh redemption?

    • @saidi7975
      @saidi7975 9 лет назад

      Well I mean that he did not change after ONE story (usually , redemptions tend to be done in one shots in comic books ). Wade's goes through various ups and downs (more than once does he fall back in his old habits or even questions the usefulness of said redemption !) But if you want the long version devilkais.deviantart.com/art/El-Rey-Chapa-Welcome-Wade-Wilson-515133623

    Guardian Devil was awesome, one of my favorites in part because it showcased one of my favorite comic villains finally written well. I'm not arguing that he isn't Z-list, I just think it's more because of bad writing than a problem with the character concept.

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  9 лет назад +13

      Oh, absolutely. Guardian Devil is probably the best story about... _that_ villain... in his decades of history.

    • @raccoononymous
      @raccoononymous 9 лет назад +5

      *****
      Really, I don't understand _why,_ though. Sure, he looks absurd: despite his moniker, he is probably Spiderman's most ostentatious villain, making Kraven the Hunter's leopard-spotted ass look subtle by comparison. That is what makes the character so interesting to me, though, that conflict between being both a natural deceiver and a showoff. That kind of internal conflict would seem like great material for a character to me, but I guess most comic book writers don't share that view. The only other appearance of him that I liked was Mark Millar's _Old Man Logan,_ which I wasn't really impressed with outside of that one scene.

    • @crossbones116
      @crossbones116 9 лет назад +1

      ***** It's the effect of being a Spidey villain. While they can be very threatening and certainly skilled, their main nemesis humiliates them in such a way that it rubs off on every subsequent appearance. And as much as I love Ditko's artstyle, some of his designs haven't quite carried over into the modern age.

      That villian is pretty awesome, not gonna lie. Spidey never fighting people who knew real magic was a stylistic choice by Stan and Steve, If I recall correctly. So they made a fake magician instead. Which is infinitely more original and entertaining.
      Real magicians like Zatanna are overdone.
      But that villian? His schtick is his alone.

    The good: Absolutely love your rants, and you have a knack for doing videos in an "off-the-cuff" kinda way I rarely see anyone being able to do. And you clearly know the material VERY well. Sound is also pretty decent.
    The bad: The camera being used, the lighting, and worse even, your "set" make for a very poor visual presentation. There's weird saturation/frame rate/white balance issues going on, and the mish mash of posters in the background make for a very confusing look. It took me a while to even understand that you have a DVD/Blu ray stand in the middle of the shot. Sometimes, less is more.
    If you could work with better camera and maybe trim the stuff going on in the background, I think it'd make the visual presentation of the videos quite a bit better! Our of curiosity, what camera do you use?

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  9 лет назад +29

      I have an HD camera. It's the one we film with.
      We deliberately put the saturation and contrast filters on because we don't *_want_* to look like _every other crew cut / HD camera / popped collar dipshit on RUclips_. And that's never going to change.

    • @izzynobre
      @izzynobre 9 лет назад +5

      *****
      >>We deliberately put the saturation and contrast filters on because we don't want to look like every other crew cut / HD camera / popped collar dipshit on RUclips.
      To be totally honest, I don't understand what one thing has to do with the other. You CAN have decent video quality and not look like a "popped collar dipshit". I don't see how those two are related at all.
      And the problem isn't that it isn't the camera is SD, that's not what I was talking about. I was talking specifically about white balance/lighting/frame rate issues. The saturation/contrast I get being a deliberate artistic choice -- I'm not a fan, but then again, I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me --, but what's with that frame rate...?
      Also don't get me wrong, I'm not shitting on your work. I love your videos. Just trying to make some constructive criticism re: video quality, is all.

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  9 лет назад +22

      izzynobre I disagree.
      I full-body cringe at how many channels on RUclips have pristine production values... and *_nothing else_*. And, almost without exception, they fall into the above described archetype.
      We go for a different look. In _all_ things. We started with a grainy IBM USB camera I bought at a garage sale for 5 bucks, and honestly? If that thing shot in widescreen and at a decent framerate? I'd still be using it. It gave my show a cool, genuine visual texture that no one else has. We've attempted to mimic it through production effects ever since.

    • @izzynobre
      @izzynobre 9 лет назад +2

      ***** I see your point, but it's not like the content would change if you were to, say, fix lighting or frame rate. Shows with poor content aren't that way because they have production values; they have poor content because the content is poor. You cant have both content AND production values; two movie/comic book fans as ourselves can surely agree on that :)
      Anyway, I understand you're not interested in technical criticism, so I'll take my leave.
      I WILL say this, though -- I'm finding a bit ironic that my criticism seems so unwelcome, when the whole premise of your channel is to pass criticism on the works of others.
      And yes, I will consider a response such as "whatever my show is superior to those other dipshits' shows on youtube and WE WILL NEVER CHANGE" as "does not take constructive criticism well". When you respond to a well-meaning critic by namecalling people, I get the feeling I just shouldn't next time.
      Food for thought. Again, I mean it when I say I love the show, and I'm already looking for some of these DD comics!

    • @izzynobre
      @izzynobre 9 лет назад +3

      ***** I hadn't seen you edited the comment, so I'll address that point:
      >>We go for a different look. In all things.
      Fair enough. I can definitely respect that. I didn't know those decisions were deliberate artistic direction, is all.
      By the way, when we say "we", I assume you're working with a video editor/writer...? Or is that a less literal "we"?

    I don't think the punisher is credited for his intelligence nearly enough. Focused on pretty much the one thing true, but when it comes to that one, enormously dangerous thing, which according to some continuities he did nonstop for over 40 years, he's a strategic genius.

    Great vid sir, very concise and well researched. Clearly shows how much reverence you've always had for the character. A bit sad showing how well written and deep the writers made their stories in the past, and now most comics creators at Marvel seem not to have grown up actually reading comics but watching sitcoms, and their shallow and poorly done books reflect that.

    Dear Razorfist; it is with due pleasure that I must thank you for turning me onto one of the greatest and underrated superheroes of all time, and also inadvertently making me like the Punisher more than I already did prior to reading the story arc of him getting willfully arrested just to save Matt Murdock from a dropped soap prison buttfucking of brutality. What other comics do you recommend? In my city there are at least 3 different comic book stores that have essentially anything that I could need and I would like your opinion on which ones other than DD and the P to push my interest and my wallet into something other than the vanilla bull shit that I was reading before.

    I personally loved Mark Waids run. Sure, it wasn't as deep or complex as most of the character's previous arcs, but I loved how they finally gave him a break. The fact Daredevil was forced to fully reveal his identity (which was pointed out in-story to have been hastily put in the bottle again) was a twist I didn't see coming. That being said I'm glad the new run returned the character's grittier elements.

    Fantastic video.
    Granted I am more of a Batman afficionado than a Daredevil one, but I do like DD (Yeah, I know that you consider Bats as the Metallica to DD's Motorhead, but to me Batman's best is Brassens while Daredevil's is Léo Ferré.).
    And while I am at it , THANK YOU for the Dennis O'Neil shout-out ! He created the OPTIMAL Batman and Joker and ushered 3 decades of Bat-comics to enjoy !
    I have to point that while I do like Matt, my favorite character (and what made me read Miller's run) in the book is definitely Wilson Fisk. Loved the guy from the Spidey TAS, and the comics Kingpin is no exception.
    As for the other villains ? Well, Bullseye sort of overstayed his welcome after Miller's run (though I think he started with Marv Wolfman , didn't he ?). Though, I didn't mind him in Kelly's Deadpool or Gambit's "Assassination Game" arc.
    Typhoid Mary walks a thin line between cool antagonist and "grating acquaintance" (I know her from Joe's Deadpool once again...). And Elektra ? Definitely made for THAT arc and damn does it show. I don't mind resurrections if they IMPROVE the character ( X-Factor's Jean Grey is far better than Space Chicken woman for example) , but Ms Nachios was that monovalent (Which is NOT a bad thing I'll precise. Some characters are only made for a few story-arcs . It is just their condition, so to speak)
    As for Barbara's crippling...it is just that. It's simply because Alan needed a victim, that was it. Of course it took Ostrander, Dixon creating and maturing her as Oracle and Puckett and Horrocks writing Cass Cain to make it worth it. And Bolland's art aside, it did not really benefit the Joker.
    Out of curiosity , what ticked you off that much in Mark Waid's take ? I mean you seem perfectly fine with Original Yellow DD (who I do like too BTW...).

      Ive yet to read Guardian Devil... I'd go for Vol 1 of Frank Miller and start there (though Miller's DD work comes into it's own a little later on in the volumes). The Frank Miller DD Omnibus is fantastic (if you can afford it, then buy that), so collect Vol 1 and then when you can collect all three. Utterly brilliant. Or even go for Born Again, or Man Without Fear... both Miller (Omnibus Companion contains these in bigger sized volume.. again if you feel like splashing out) you'll be able to pick them up cheap on Amazon.
