    I remember when they had Adam West basicly play The Shadow in Batman the animated series. Explaining he was Bruce Wayne's childhood hero and insperation.
    And I also find it funny that there were/are complaints that "Zorro" was ripping off Batman, when Zorro was created 20 years before Batman was even drawn.

    I would not mind Batman getting away with theft except for the fact that DC sued Fawcett over Captain Marvel's (SHAZAM) mild similarities to Superman, which IMO was bullshit.

    • @SrEscalofrios
      @SrEscalofrios 6 лет назад +6

      And the funny thing... Later DC took the character and used it for its own company :P
      (And now that they're making a movie about the ORIGINAL Captain Marvel, I wouldn't be surprised if the character gets more merchandise than usual)

    I just realised. In Dawn of Justice, the Waynes were walking out after a screening of "Excalibur" rather than "Mark of Zorro" to facilitate the more modern retelling of Batman. I have to wonder how long before this eventually leads to a film with the Waynes walking out of "The Shadow" and this comes full circle.

      @SrEscalofrios 6 лет назад +4

      Actually, doesn't sounds bad... As long as they get a better writter and a better artist than this piece of crap of crossover, it can actually work "well" (considering how The Shadow from comic medias is shown)

  • @RNSEntertainmentChannel
    @RNSEntertainmentChannel 7 лет назад +42

    You know, I hear people often mention the Wolverine/Lobo fight in the Marvel/DC crossover as just being brought on by surface-level similarities (ie badasses who smoke cigars), but Lobo was actually created SPECIFICALLY to parody Wolverine and other over-the-top, gruff, hyper-violent anti-heroes who were popular at the time. So while I wouldn't say it's in any way similar to Batman and the Shadow (where Batman was literally a ripoff of the Shadow from his inception), Lobo is specifically a parody character (mostly) of Wolverine, so there's a lot more to them being chosen to fight than just surface-level similarities (which are in fact a direct result of Lobo being a Wolverine joke). That being said, popularity determined the results of those fights and Wolverine winning is complete bullshit lol.
    Enjoyed the video, do more comic stuff man.

    Yup, another great review. My dad put me on to The Shadow with the 70's DC comics series, then I bought many of the pulps as a kid as they were often in print and available at the local bookstore. He has always been (and continues to be) my favorite comic/pulp hero and wish he would truly get his day on the big screen with the intensity of character that he warrants vs. the campier treatment he received in the Alec Baldwin film. Who knows, though, if we'll ever see him truly done justice. I guess "The Shadow Knows".

    This is why I'm always interested in what Bob Kane's red tights wearing version "The Bat-Man" would have developed like because it's clear Finger (for all the shit people give Bob over screwing him over) lifted just as much if not more from the shadow as a character than old Robert

    Bi-Monthly means they produce an issue once every two months. The term you're looking for is bi-weekly, which would produce two issues a month. Unless you're saying the Shadow became less popular, of course.

    I've been following this story arc closely; the fourth issue comes out later this month. I have to admit, I'm absolutely LOVING where it's going, but at the same time, it isn't perfect. Your basic problems with the "hamfisted" approach to sticking the Shadow and his agents into Gotham is something I fully agree with, but at the same time, if you're going to have the Shadow and Batman exist in the same world, I don't know how I personally could have done it better. And, as you said, much of what is done for the plot actually works fairly well, given the Shadow's near-omnipotent existence. I'm very excited for the next issue; I don't know if you're still reading it, or have done any other videos on it, but I hope that if you are/have, you're enjoying it. :)

    You should look into the Black Bat pulp character. Black Bat's true identity is Anthony Quinn, a district attorney who had acid thrown in his face in court which blinds him. (Sound familiar yet?). BUT he undergoes an experimental surgery which not only restores his sight, but helps him see in the dark and gives him advanced strength. So now by day, he fights justice in the courtroom, and by night he fights justice on the streets (Does that also sound familiar?)

    The edge that Batman has over the shadow and part of the reason for the appeal is Batman’s rogue gallery. The only other character to have an impressive rogue gallery is Spider-Man. Those villains is what makes Batman. Take that away and the character dies. Anybody that wants to make a superhero comic book, listen to me, work on your villains.

    I'm a fan of The Shadow and have been since childhood. My introduction to the Legend being Alec Baldwin's portrayal of the character in the 1994 movie.
    Since then though, I've listened to several of his classic adventures in the radio shows and his adventures in literary works.

    while I admit that I have not read anywhere near as many Shadow pulps as you, only about a dozen or so, but I do remember at least one more story that describes the shadow as "bat-like". "The Crime Cult" describes him as looking like a bat several times if I remember correctly. Not trying to knock you or anything. I stumbled upon it looking for shadow pulps on amazon after your first video on the shadow. It wasn't from the reprints by nostagia ventures but the earlier ones by pyramid fiction. Perhaps there was some revisionist editing on it that added it in, but thats a bit of a stretch. Anyways love the content man.

      The Shadow: Year One is where you want to start. Just to get the backstory.
      This comic includes a number of references to Pulp characters from the Shadow mythos you may not be familiar with.
      After that? Go for it.

    is Tinsley's work on par with gibson's? I've only read several gibson pulps and loved them

    • @TK42100
      @TK42100 7 лет назад

      From what I've heard, Tinsley's books were more grittier. Lots of violence, torture, explosions, scantily clad women, and often an underground hideout for the bad guys; Tinsley was big on them for some reason. Tinsley also had no problem in having the Shadow injured in his books and often had a woman as a villain, something Gibson never did.

    Thanks for the video. If you could pick another artist that could cast the darker tone intended for the comic, which one would you pick? ( for the sake of variety choose one or more not named in the video). I find Rossmo a little too cartoony forthis but I like how he has refined his art style

    Your prose flows out of your mouth faster than a panty drop in the back of a Motley Crue tour bus. There are so many moments of gold in your reviews and rants, I could literally print off 10 T-Shirts every time you post a vid. Thank you for calling a spade a spade, and Bill Finger and Bob Kane 'The Shadow' stealing motherfuckers they are.

    I wonder, good sir Fist, what would you think to a Shadow/Judge Dredd crossover? I mean sure it might be eeeeeever so slightly slanted in the man with the mountain for a chin's favour but it would be kickass...actually it'd probably end with Dredd recruiting the Shadow given how alike those two are.

    The original film The Mark of Zorro was a 1920 silent picture starring Douglas Fairbanks. Are you sure DC was referring to the 1940 remake with Tyrone Power?

    Hey Razorfist. Just want to say your videos are great , you have immense talent. Sorry I am going to be way off topic here, but I was wondering something. I watched one of your videos titled the Cult of Kojima , and man , it was spot on. I was wondering if you would ever consider doing a part ll or something , concerning all the buzz around his new game Death Stranding. It's just funny how all his disciples are trying to decode every cryptic clue , saying things like, kojima is a genius , kojima is God, this is going to be the best game ever. I was just wondering your opinions on this game or kojima , if any at all . Response would be cool .
