I've noticed that Frank always pairs himself with artists that are great storytellers. People shallowly complain about John Romita Jr's blocky characters, but, the man can tell a story and sell action scenes. Man Without Fear, I've reread so many times. Also Bill Sienkiewicz is one of the rare comic artists who uses his stylization to bring you in the story, when most stylized comics do the opposite.
With all due respect to Stan Lee: making him a blind lawyer that fights crime at night was not a new idea at all. The golden age pulp hero the Black Bat was already there. Tony Quinn is a DA fighting the mob. They blind him and he gains the ability to see in the dark as he embarks on a quest to bring them down.
I ordered and read Born Again, the Man Without Fear and the Murdock Papers based on this video (I have Out and Devil in Cellblock D on the way). Thanks so much for the recommendations!
Daredevil 182-184 are incredibly underrated. The death of Elektra was such a psychological effect on Matt, he unknowingly let Kingpin Imported some drugs. Consequently, a girl is killed, and a drug dealer is unscathed by Matt's lawyering (dealer had pacemaker). The series pits Daredevil against the Punisher. EPIC. Daredevil 169 is an incredible one shot issue that fleshes out the epic rivalry between DD and Bullseye. Without it, DD 181 is insignificant. Daredevil> Batman. Unknown to most, dark, gritty DD pre dates Batman the Dark Knight returns. Batman in essence is a rip off of DD. Unchallenged praise for Miller's Batman confirms this.....Hush) You do not want Batman Marks have their hero inferior to a far more realistic and psychologically tormented character! Daredevil Is a criminally underrated super hero.
Seeing this video and then hearing how badly Daredevil was neutered and emasculated into a mere character prop in Disney She-Hulk is like a punch to the gut of my soul.
Being a huge fan of DareDevil, I must say his return to the screen was way over-due. he's a very unique and HIGHLY interesting character and I love how they sett the tone completely apart from the rest. We've seen so many tones in Marvel movies done excellently over the years, the serious tone, grim tone, funnier tone and the balance between serious AND funny tone. But this looks gritty as hell, just the way the character should be and I'm highly anticipated for it! Btw great recommendations! Love and War, Born Again, and The Man Without Fear are absolute freaking masterpieces! :) Definitely have to check those other gems out. Liked and Subscribed!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this video. Brilliant. I’ve since chased ever Daredevil suggestion that you posted. Great job. Keep on the good work.
Daredevil is definitely one of my favorite comics. I have the entire Frank Miller run, Born again and a few others who's names are escaping me at the moment.
You gotta at least give honorable mention to Daredevil #7, against Namor. One of the most awesome, inspiring "never give up" comic stories of all-time.
I actually bought Guardian Devil for my brother for Christmas because he is a practicing Minister and Daredevil is all time favorite Superhero. I read the first ten pages and already I got hooked. thanks for the recommendation Razor
(DD SEASON 2 SPOILERS) With fisk seemingly connecting DD to Matt (and requesting his files) and Matt revealing himself to Karen it seems its all set for Born Again on season 3!
+EvilDead Ash - I'm thinking Born Again would have to be season 4, at the earliest. Karen has to run off and do some hard living for awhile before the table is set for Born Again.
EvilDead Ash That's what upsets me most about the needless Punisher prison stuff from season 2: It kind of takes the wind out of the sails of a 'Devil in Cell Block D' story arc. what should have been an 'Oh shit, Punisher's going to prison' moment... will instead be a 'Haven't we seen this already?' moment.
***** Yeah,i also felt that way when they "killed" off Elektra. While i know she will comeback somehow with that blood tombstone the hand was preparing,i feel like it would have been better saved for when the show actually has Bullseye.Seeing Nobu being the one that recreates such a shocking moment in comic book history kinda ruins it a bit. Speaking of season 2,would you do a review of it like you did with season 1? it would be awesome!
+The Rageaholic Would be amazing if they make the Born Again storyline. I read it about a year ago and it is by far my favorite graphic novel of all time, closely followed by The Crow. Somehow though, I cannot see how Charlie Cox can pull it off. I personally find him too wooden and a bit like a wet fart in see-through plastic underpants. I do however find Vincent D'Onofrio to be a great Kingpin and am looking forward to seeing him play a bigger part in Season 3. More Punisher is needed too.. a great addition to the series.
I think that Season 3 will be about the ressurection of Elektra, Bullseye, and perhaps Melvin Potter finally becoming Gladiator. Like Raz0r said, I think that we will have to wait until Season 4 or 5 for Born Again. I can see Karen not being able to live with Matt being Daredevil, so she runs off, gets into porn, and becomes a junkie. As a matter of fact, I can see the opening of Born Again being a great season finale where we see Kingpin finding out Daredevil's secret identity.
So, I'm coming _very_ late to the table on this, but I disagree with Miller on his stance regarding Superman and Wonder Woman. That's not to say I don't get it, but I don't agree with it. Heroes like Superman and Spider-Man are people who desperately need a human connection to keep them grounded. To keep them from being their "persona" for too long. And while it's true that both have something of that in their respective parental figures, ultimately they need a partner who can keep them firmly entrenched in the lives of the people they fight to protect when wearing their costumes. That doesn't mean that you can't have a bad writer (or even a good writer) who doesn't find themselves quibbling over what to do with these "normal people," and I think Frank is one of those writers- I don't think he has the interest to write Superman with Lois. I think it would bore him to tears. And because of that, I don't think I'd _want_ him to write Superman with Lois. But that doesn't mean that Superman being with Lois is a bad idea, in and of itself. Similarly, that doesn't mean every hero needs this. Batman is a guy who has lots of more human connections through people like Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Leslie Thompkins, and other side-characters in the Bat-Family. Further, unlike Clark and Peter, Bruce isn't really a "normal person," nor does he _want_ to be, for the most part. Because of that, he fares better with love interests like Catwoman and Talia. Likewise, Matt Murdock - while obviously carrying plenty of baggage - is not someone who would benefit from a Mary Jane or a Lois Lane, and as such benefits more from having an Elektra. Long story short, I think it's important to consider the type of character when looking at their relationship options, and to not just try and take a "one size fits all" approach to this kind of thing. I don't think Frank is wrong, period. Just that his approach isn't a good fit for characters like Superman. Otherwise, really good stuff, and I'll have to pick up "Man Without Fear" at some point.
Thanks for this Razorfist, I recently just bought my first comic book and it was Daredevil! Though it was "Father" and I really enjoyed that one, it had a good twist. Thank you for this list man, Daredevil is my personal favorite vigilante type hero. Dude is badass and will fight anyone who fucks with Hell's Kitchen.
I've watched this episode probably 5 times, and it has inspired me in many ways actually. It certainly helped to kick off my obsessive collection of graphic novels, and also reignited my teenage love of Daredevil comics. At 41 years old, the wife is scratching her head as to why 4-5 different graphic novels are getting delivered every week. I'm sure she is thinking that my midlife crisis is kicking in, although that happened a good few years ago. Thanks Razorfist, I now pretty much have all these, just need to get Love's Labour Lost and Redemption in book form. When I head back home to UK for my month holiday this summer I'll be able to finally get my hands on the Bendis and Brubaker runs, which I now own in their entirety. Cannot wait, just ploughing through the Miller Omnibus, which is nothing short of fucking awesome and I'll definitely reread. Born Again has always been in my top three of all time, just fantastic. Just wondering though, I don't have Mark Waid's run but have heard good things generally about it. What exactly don't you like about it? Your channel is great mate, and love the humour.. especially the Metal Mythos (Motorhead, Queen, Iron Maiden). Keep em coming!
I remember reading Guardian Devil in middle school and was blown away by how amazing it was. The reveal (and death) of the mastermind villain still sticks with me.
2 years out and I still come back to this video. I've read most of the stories on this list and DD has jumped from something like #24 to #3 on my favorite superheroes of all time list. Thanks Razor!
Riley Humphrey I've a favour to ask. I'm ordering a daredevil book from Amazon and I don't know which one. Either guardian devil or one or the frank miller volumes. Which one would you recommend?
It depends. I'd say start with the Frank Miller volumes, particularly The Man Without Fear. Then work your way through Frank Miller's other stuff. Guardian Devil best comes later.
I feel like part of the reason Marvel took so much risk with Daredevil's lore (pretty much all the dark stuff Frank Miller did) is because when characters aren't that popular, they take greater risks, i.e. Deapool. Before Joe Kelly got his hands on the character, all he had was being a "Spider-Man who kills people". The insane, over-the-top, and fourth-wall-breaking behavior we all associate with Deadpool nowadays is thanks to Joe Kelly, based on what I know.
Actually Joe Kelly developped what Fabian Nicieza has set up... and later Fab rolled with what Kelly has perfected. And DP , as he started as, never really reminded of Spidey. The jokes were already there but he was a friggin' monster...
D.C. Stranded No problem, I get that, but what I meant by disassociating Early Wade from Spider-Man is that while it is the general consensus, my personal reading experience did not give me that impression. And you can definitely crank the " not much of a good person" notion up to the next level. Deadpool was a horrifying man (and stays that way for a long time !) with a harsh redemption .
saidi7975 To b honest I've barely read any Deadpool comics. Most of the info I have on the character comes from research and second hand information. So, what do you mean when you say harsh redemption?
Well I mean that he did not change after ONE story (usually , redemptions tend to be done in one shots in comic books ). Wade's goes through various ups and downs (more than once does he fall back in his old habits or even questions the usefulness of said redemption !) But if you want the long version devilkais.deviantart.com/art/El-Rey-Chapa-Welcome-Wade-Wilson-515133623
Guardian Devil was awesome, one of my favorites in part because it showcased one of my favorite comic villains finally written well. I'm not arguing that he isn't Z-list, I just think it's more because of bad writing than a problem with the character concept.
***** Really, I don't understand _why,_ though. Sure, he looks absurd: despite his moniker, he is probably Spiderman's most ostentatious villain, making Kraven the Hunter's leopard-spotted ass look subtle by comparison. That is what makes the character so interesting to me, though, that conflict between being both a natural deceiver and a showoff. That kind of internal conflict would seem like great material for a character to me, but I guess most comic book writers don't share that view. The only other appearance of him that I liked was Mark Millar's _Old Man Logan,_ which I wasn't really impressed with outside of that one scene.
***** It's the effect of being a Spidey villain. While they can be very threatening and certainly skilled, their main nemesis humiliates them in such a way that it rubs off on every subsequent appearance. And as much as I love Ditko's artstyle, some of his designs haven't quite carried over into the modern age.
***** That villian is pretty awesome, not gonna lie. Spidey never fighting people who knew real magic was a stylistic choice by Stan and Steve, If I recall correctly. So they made a fake magician instead. Which is infinitely more original and entertaining. Real magicians like Zatanna are overdone. But that villian? His schtick is his alone.
+rigren0121 I think what happened was that he was never the same after Sin City, because he never stopped writing Sin City. He constantly tried writing everything he worked on after it like he would Sin City, and it...really didn't work.
Ever read Judge Dredd? It's pretty metal and my favourite comic book. I think it might be up your ally. Love the satirical stuff of the 70's and 80's but also the later more serious stuff is fantastic.
***** Fucking awesome to hear! Any chance you could provide a couple of recommendations/personal favourites or might that spoil a possible future video?
I don't think the punisher is credited for his intelligence nearly enough. Focused on pretty much the one thing true, but when it comes to that one, enormously dangerous thing, which according to some continuities he did nonstop for over 40 years, he's a strategic genius.
You didn't feel like Vanessa Fisk served a similar function in her earlier Spiderman appearances? I thought her first appearances in Amazing Spiderman and later Spectacular Spiderman were really well-done and they really got across the sense that she was, as you said, Fisk's "Achilles heel."
I regret to admit I'm not especially boned up on Daredevil despite my interest in the character. I'll use this video as a reference to perform some required reading. Much obliged, Razor!
Just watched the first episode of the Daredevil TV show, and holy crap am I happy Jeff Loeb is the Producer of this series. That was the position I think he deserved for Teen Wolf, but alas Jeff Davis is that short-sighted with his 'baby' and Loeb only worked on one episode.
Hey Razor. Watching this video inspired me to pick up Man Without Fear and after reading it, I'm blown away. This is seriously my favourite origin story for a superhero that I've read. Absolutely loved that book. I've decided to pick up Frank Miller's entire run including the Born Again graphic novel. My question to you is, after reading the rest of Miller's stuff, what would you suggest picking up next? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Ann Nocenti's run, particularly the Typhoid Mary arc, is good. And very much in the style of Miller. But for my money? 'Guardian Devil' by Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada. And follow that straight on through to the Bendis/Maleev run.
Razor I'm with you man I've got every finger crossed for this series. Great recommendations! By the way I really enjoyed the yellow daredevil story way back when I read it also cool Chalres Bronson Shirt.
I was seriously considering going back and collecting Millar's Daredevil stuff since I've been on a Simonson Thor run these days. You've just put me over the top
First off, I would like to thank you for the recommendations! I bought The Man Without Fear after seeing this video and fell in love with it and I cannot wait to delve deeper into the character of Daredevil via the books you recommended in this video. I do have two questions though. 1) Is it within the realm of possibility to do a similar video for Punisher? I've read a good bit of the MAX series and I love Garth Ennis' take on the character but I want to read more but don't know where best to go. 2) Why don't you like Mark Waid? I've never read anything by the author but it seems that others like his work if Goodreads and Amazon reviews are anything to go by and I was curious why you disliked his work on Daredevil.
His team-up with Spidey in the early '90s Spider-Man cartoon is damn good. I believe he was also on Fantastic 4 around the same time. A shame they never made a cartoon exclusively for DD. I think, if done right, it could have surpassed even the almighty Batman: The Animated Series.
I always preferred Spawn. Man comes back from the dead forced to suffer and confront things that ultimately got him damned in the first place meanwhile trying to understand the world he was just thrown in while fighting off the temptation to abandon his humanity and cut loose.
I love Daredevil but I've only read volume 2 of the collections that were released of the Miller run, and man without fear. I've considered catching up with the 1998 relaunch in the Marvel knights imprint
I personally loved Mark Waids run. Sure, it wasn't as deep or complex as most of the character's previous arcs, but I loved how they finally gave him a break. The fact Daredevil was forced to fully reveal his identity (which was pointed out in-story to have been hastily put in the bottle again) was a twist I didn't see coming. That being said I'm glad the new run returned the character's grittier elements.
***** Is that a common practice? Can i find most of the comics you mentioned here on that format or only a few have them? And if only few then why those specifically?
EmperorOfLols Marvel has been doing it more lately, but sadly, I think Guardian Devil was both the first, and last, Daredevil story to be adapted in motion comic format. I'm not sure how they select them. I know they did Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men (it's actually on Netflix, I think) and Bendis/Maleev's Spider-Woman. They appear to just be adapting more popular comic runs. Given how Mark Waid's Daredevil has fallen in popularity, it's not surprising they wouldn't be over eager to adapt it as a motion comic.
I just ordered the entirety of the Bendis run and Guardian Devil because of your recommendations. I do have a question though. I don't like The Dark Knight Returns. It may primarily be my dislike of the art and it's treatment of Superman but i really hate that book lol. My question is do you think that I should read the Miller run? If i really hate The Dark Knight Returns will I even like Millers Daredevil stuff? Thanks for the recommendations.
I stopped the video after number 6. The microsecond Punisher AND Daredevil are in the same sentence is enough for me to go to my comic store and pray it's there. Thanks Razor!
Dear Razorfist; it is with due pleasure that I must thank you for turning me onto one of the greatest and underrated superheroes of all time, and also inadvertently making me like the Punisher more than I already did prior to reading the story arc of him getting willfully arrested just to save Matt Murdock from a dropped soap prison buttfucking of brutality. What other comics do you recommend? In my city there are at least 3 different comic book stores that have essentially anything that I could need and I would like your opinion on which ones other than DD and the P to push my interest and my wallet into something other than the vanilla bull shit that I was reading before.
Love the video man. Huge comic book fan myself and a big weekly buyer but I've never really delved much into Daredevil. This is going to change now thanks to you! Off to check these books off, thanks a lot!
Hey Razorfist, thanks for your vids. You might like Charlie’s War by Pat Mills drawn by the late great Joe Calquhoun, the UKs greatest comic artist. It’s about WW1. I think you would really like it. I don’t think many in the US know of it, or him. Always like your vids. Loved Romitas work, Millers obviously , and Typhoid Mary rocks.
numbersandletters0I Deadpool has a game, multiple cameos, an entire slew of retarded Internet memes, and an upcoming movie. Deadpool has so much media, it's actually made him more obnoxious. Nightwing needs more media. Spawn needs more media. Judge Dredd needs more media. All Deadpool needs is to be axed so that Marvel can breathe a long exhale of dignity and taste.
numbersandletters0I no if he becomes popular marvel will run him into the ground like they have with spiderman if daredevil remains under the raidar the he will be able to maintain his quality much more effectivley because hacks will be less likely to use him to sling shot their carrers into the spotlight
Great video! Do you plan to do more of this? It was a pretty good list and I wouldn't mind seeing it for other characters. I would like to hear, for example, your 10 Essential Punisher Comics.
I wish you would've went into a bit more details about Mark Waid's run on Daredevil. I usually liked many of Waid's comic books so I wonder what did he fuck up so badly.
I purposefully deferred for my audience's sake because the video was already nearly 20 minutes long. I could go off for another 20 minutes on Waid's run alone.
***** please do so. All I've heard about Waid's DD is that it was more light-hearted for the most part ... if you found it THAT heinous, it'll be fun to know why !
What I loved about Kingpin's plan in Born Again was that it wasn't over the top super villain bullshit. It wasn't Ray guns and moon magic. It was subtle and precise. And he only screwed it up when he went big super villain in a profoundly desperate and stupid manner. Great stuff.
Question for you; what did you think about the Ikari character Waid introduced, or indeed that whole 'Revenge' storyline? Having not read it myself, from what I gleamed it had elements of the more serious tones of Daredevil that we know and love. Or is this an example of the "inconsistencies" you dislike about Waid?
So given you really like the "Common abilities multiplied by the lack of sight" does that mean you favor the Movie adaptation's sonar sense over the fully sixth-sense radar sense? I actually didn't mind the false daredevil duplicates even if the point of it at the end was just for the scare of "Try the red one."
That's weird. Has Batman been merely coasting in Daredevil's slipstream this whole time, starting with The Dark Knight Returns, and most recently with the casting of Ben Affleck as the new Batman?
Great vid sir, very concise and well researched. Clearly shows how much reverence you've always had for the character. A bit sad showing how well written and deep the writers made their stories in the past, and now most comics creators at Marvel seem not to have grown up actually reading comics but watching sitcoms, and their shallow and poorly done books reflect that.
To me Daredevil is the best well written superhero of all times. The chance of picking up randomly a good story of him is big. Although i understand the RazörFist's criticism about Mark Waid run on the series (his point of view) I think that is one the best regular comic books series from nowadays.
Good list, if you had made it a top 20 do you think you might have included some more Denny O'Neil stories? I know better than to ask if you would have included parts of Ann Nocenti's run
360FANMAN117 Actually , he just said that people came back for "New X-men", but he never said that he liked it ( from his tumblr, he said that he definitely does not) . Me ? I consider that "run" to be the epitome of rectal writing ; heinous, mean-spirited and despicable
The good: Absolutely love your rants, and you have a knack for doing videos in an "off-the-cuff" kinda way I rarely see anyone being able to do. And you clearly know the material VERY well. Sound is also pretty decent. The bad: The camera being used, the lighting, and worse even, your "set" make for a very poor visual presentation. There's weird saturation/frame rate/white balance issues going on, and the mish mash of posters in the background make for a very confusing look. It took me a while to even understand that you have a DVD/Blu ray stand in the middle of the shot. Sometimes, less is more. If you could work with better camera and maybe trim the stuff going on in the background, I think it'd make the visual presentation of the videos quite a bit better! Our of curiosity, what camera do you use?
I have an HD camera. It's the one we film with. We deliberately put the saturation and contrast filters on because we don't *_want_* to look like _every other crew cut / HD camera / popped collar dipshit on RUclips_. And that's never going to change.
***** >>We deliberately put the saturation and contrast filters on because we don't want to look like every other crew cut / HD camera / popped collar dipshit on RUclips. To be totally honest, I don't understand what one thing has to do with the other. You CAN have decent video quality and not look like a "popped collar dipshit". I don't see how those two are related at all. And the problem isn't that it isn't the camera is SD, that's not what I was talking about. I was talking specifically about white balance/lighting/frame rate issues. The saturation/contrast I get being a deliberate artistic choice -- I'm not a fan, but then again, I'm sure a lot of people would disagree with me --, but what's with that frame rate...? Also don't get me wrong, I'm not shitting on your work. I love your videos. Just trying to make some constructive criticism re: video quality, is all.
izzynobre I disagree. I full-body cringe at how many channels on RUclips have pristine production values... and *_nothing else_*. And, almost without exception, they fall into the above described archetype. We go for a different look. In _all_ things. We started with a grainy IBM USB camera I bought at a garage sale for 5 bucks, and honestly? If that thing shot in widescreen and at a decent framerate? I'd still be using it. It gave my show a cool, genuine visual texture that no one else has. We've attempted to mimic it through production effects ever since.
***** I see your point, but it's not like the content would change if you were to, say, fix lighting or frame rate. Shows with poor content aren't that way because they have production values; they have poor content because the content is poor. You cant have both content AND production values; two movie/comic book fans as ourselves can surely agree on that :) Anyway, I understand you're not interested in technical criticism, so I'll take my leave. I WILL say this, though -- I'm finding a bit ironic that my criticism seems so unwelcome, when the whole premise of your channel is to pass criticism on the works of others. And yes, I will consider a response such as "whatever my show is superior to those other dipshits' shows on youtube and WE WILL NEVER CHANGE" as "does not take constructive criticism well". When you respond to a well-meaning critic by namecalling people, I get the feeling I just shouldn't next time. Food for thought. Again, I mean it when I say I love the show, and I'm already looking for some of these DD comics!
***** I hadn't seen you edited the comment, so I'll address that point: >>We go for a different look. In all things. Fair enough. I can definitely respect that. I didn't know those decisions were deliberate artistic direction, is all. By the way, when we say "we", I assume you're working with a video editor/writer...? Or is that a less literal "we"?
As i am grabbing my keys and heading out to my preferred comic shop i am curious, what does Razorfist think of some other heros that i cant help but enjoy like Hellboy and the team from BPRD, Moon Knight?
I agree 99%. Mark Waid's DD isn't as good as past stuff, but still not bad and pretty dark in its own way (that Coyote character probably did the most twisted and fucked up thing I've ever seen in fiction) and if nothing else will act as a pallet cleanser for when DD returns to form, which he will after the Netflix show. Marvel Comics is nothing if not willing to bend over and take it from the cinematic universe.
Fantastic video. Granted I am more of a Batman afficionado than a Daredevil one, but I do like DD (Yeah, I know that you consider Bats as the Metallica to DD's Motorhead, but to me Batman's best is Brassens while Daredevil's is Léo Ferré.). And while I am at it , THANK YOU for the Dennis O'Neil shout-out ! He created the OPTIMAL Batman and Joker and ushered 3 decades of Bat-comics to enjoy ! I have to point that while I do like Matt, my favorite character (and what made me read Miller's run) in the book is definitely Wilson Fisk. Loved the guy from the Spidey TAS, and the comics Kingpin is no exception. As for the other villains ? Well, Bullseye sort of overstayed his welcome after Miller's run (though I think he started with Marv Wolfman , didn't he ?). Though, I didn't mind him in Kelly's Deadpool or Gambit's "Assassination Game" arc. Typhoid Mary walks a thin line between cool antagonist and "grating acquaintance" (I know her from Joe's Deadpool once again...). And Elektra ? Definitely made for THAT arc and damn does it show. I don't mind resurrections if they IMPROVE the character ( X-Factor's Jean Grey is far better than Space Chicken woman for example) , but Ms Nachios was that monovalent (Which is NOT a bad thing I'll precise. Some characters are only made for a few story-arcs . It is just their condition, so to speak) As for Barbara's crippling...it is just that. It's simply because Alan needed a victim, that was it. Of course it took Ostrander, Dixon creating and maturing her as Oracle and Puckett and Horrocks writing Cass Cain to make it worth it. And Bolland's art aside, it did not really benefit the Joker. Out of curiosity , what ticked you off that much in Mark Waid's take ? I mean you seem perfectly fine with Original Yellow DD (who I do like too BTW...).
I think season one of the Netflix series (which is incredible) is definitely based on The Man with out Fear, while season two seems like it will be drawing on Death of Elektra (with the inclusion of Punisher), which will hopefully lead us to an amazing season three based on Born Again. This is assuming that they get Karen addicted to drugs during the end of season two. I never realised this until recently but this is something I have wanted very much to happen. What do you think?
+Aleksandar Kovaceski Nah I say do Death of Elektra next season since they haven't introduced Bullseye yet, and have either Season 4 or 5 be Born Again.
this is true, bullseye is not in this season. I think they are running the story involving the Hand this season setting up Death of Elektra next season. Hopefully they do get to Born Again bringing bak vincent denofrio for an epic come back. And then maybe even Guardian Devil for the following season after that.
Great job with the list. Redemption is underrated I read that one a little while ago and really enjoyed it. But Born Again I think is a bit overrated, after the fall of MM the story dragged for me and it doesn't really get going until Nuke and Captain America show up.But that's just me.
8:30 "Punisher shows up."
My God, was that an amazing delivery.
Like a heroic two-face story?Awesome!!!!
Black cat is a marvel anti- heroine.
I ordered and read Born Again, the Man Without Fear and the Murdock Papers based on this video (I have Out and Devil in Cellblock D on the way). Thanks so much for the recommendations!
ajbahus Right on! Glad to hear it!
+ajbahus Dhe Dare devil franchise is Бolshie бullshit.
+The Rageaholic Top 3 heroes..? go!
+The Rageaholic where did you get those voiced over comic book thingys?
Red-and-yellow is dhe kommunist kolor skeme.
Daredevil Is a criminally underrated super hero.
from the seventies, Batman was dark
Seeing this video and then hearing how badly Daredevil was neutered and emasculated into a mere character prop in Disney She-Hulk is like a punch to the gut of my soul.
Woah, Frank Miller has a much softer voice then I expected.
You need to make more videos about comics because you kick ASS doing it.
Listen to this guy folks. He knows what he's talking about.
'Father' is a really good one, too. And had a very special meaning to Joe Quesada, from what I understand.
It does, I plan on getting all these comics you recommended on here. Why is Daredevil so underrated? It's crazy.
I’ve been in a deep dive with Daredevil and the Bendis run is my new favorite run in comic book history
The jokes were already there but he was a friggin' monster...
saidi7975 that's what I meant when I said "Spider-Man who kills people", he cracked jokes but wasn't much of a good person.
D.C. Stranded No problem, I get that, but what I meant by disassociating Early Wade from Spider-Man is that while it is the general consensus, my personal reading experience did not give me that impression.
And you can definitely crank the " not much of a good person" notion up to the next level. Deadpool was a horrifying man (and stays that way for a long time !) with a harsh redemption .
saidi7975
To b honest I've barely read any Deadpool comics.
Always come back to your daredevil vids
Love your passion
Just watched the the movie (Directors Cut) yesterday and to see this being uploaded now is a Godsent, thank you Razorfist!
Guardian Devil was awesome, one of my favorites in part because it showcased one of my favorite comic villains finally written well. I'm not arguing that he isn't Z-list, I just think it's more because of bad writing than a problem with the character concept.
Oh, absolutely. Guardian Devil is probably the best story about... _that_ villain... in his decades of history.
*****
Really, I don't understand _why,_ though.
Enough with the mystery! O, the suspense is getting to me!
;)
*****
That villian is pretty awesome, not gonna lie. Spidey never fighting people who knew real magic was a stylistic choice by Stan and Steve, If I recall correctly. So they made a fake magician instead. Which is infinitely more original and entertaining.
Real magicians like Zatanna are overdone.
But that villian? His schtick is his alone.
You know what? I totally forgot that Frank Miller can be a good writer
+rigren0121 I think what happened was that he was never the same after Sin City, because he never stopped writing Sin City. He constantly tried writing everything he worked on after it like he would Sin City, and it...really didn't work.
All I can say is thank you TJ and DP for leading me to the awesomeness that is Razorfist.
The name Kevin Smith and good don't mix well in 2022.
Ever read Judge Dredd? It's pretty metal and my favourite comic book. I think it might be up your ally. Love the satirical stuff of the 70's and 80's but also the later more serious stuff is fantastic.
Yeah, I've had a subscription to 2000 A.D. for quite awhile. Big Dredd fan.
***** Fucking awesome to hear! Any chance you could provide a couple of recommendations/personal favourites or might that spoil a possible future video?
What are your thoughts on Daredevil: End of Days.
Yes, it was in 70's ASM, even before Spectacular series.
You'd think Batman would be the one that's blind.
Mark Waid's run on Daredevil will end in August, well its about time.
I regret to admit I'm not especially boned up on Daredevil despite my interest in the character. I'll use this video as a reference to perform some required reading. Much obliged, Razor!
May I ask where you got that bitchin' Charles Bronson T-shirt, Mr. Fist?
Just watched the first episode of the Daredevil TV show, and holy crap am I happy Jeff Loeb is the Producer of this series. That was the position I think he deserved for Teen Wolf, but alas Jeff Davis is that short-sighted with his 'baby' and Loeb only worked on one episode.
Daredevil was always my favourite comic hero. It's great to see a fellow fan doing a video.
No love for parts of a hole??? David Mack's epic is just as good as guardian devil, just it didn't have the luck to have Kevin Smiths name on it
Think I just found my new favorite channel Metal+Daredevil can't get better!
Razor I'm with you man I've got every finger crossed for this series. Great recommendations! By the way I really enjoyed the yellow daredevil story way back when I read it also cool Chalres Bronson Shirt.
yo razor, where's Nocenti at? her, miller and Bendis are known for being the trinity of daredevil writer.
Hey Rageaholic What do you think about Frank Miller's works that Linkara reviewed like All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder and Holy Terror?
Has DD ever had an animated appearance worth watching? Great video Razor!
With the new show out on N-Stream, does it stand up to your expectations as a Daredevil Show?
I always preferred Spawn. Man comes back from the dead forced to suffer and confront things that ultimately got him damned in the first place meanwhile trying to understand the world he was just thrown in while fighting off the temptation to abandon his humanity and cut loose.
Vincent nailed King Pin
You're right Razorfist..... I do wanna read Devil in cell block D. Im getting my keys now!
John Tortorella it,s really good
Had to drive an hour to Halifax but I got it! :D
cool have fun
Yea Cell Block D is good but im going to go find Yellow.
John Tortorella if you are finished. what do you think of it? or what do think of it so faR?
I love Daredevil but I've only read volume 2 of the collections that were released of the Miller run, and man without fear. I've considered catching up with the 1998 relaunch in the Marvel knights imprint
I personally loved Mark Waids run. Sure, it wasn't as deep or complex as most of the character's previous arcs, but I loved how they finally gave him a break. The fact Daredevil was forced to fully reveal his identity (which was pointed out in-story to have been hastily put in the bottle again) was a twist I didn't see coming. That being said I'm glad the new run returned the character's grittier elements.
Where can i continue to listen the amazing voice acting at 5:29 for Guardian Devil?
EmperorOfLols It's a DVD Motion Comic of Guardian Devil they released commercially years ago. You can find it on Amazon pretty cheap.
+Crimson Gamer lul
Huh, wasn't expecting something good from Kevin Smith after his Batman Bladder spasm and Black Cat Rape Retcon. May have to give it a shot!
No lengthy rant about Waids DD ? I´m sorta disappointed. Anyway, great video!
Any chance of more comic related stuff in the future ?
Hey Razorfist, thanks for your vids. You might like Charlie’s War by Pat Mills drawn by the late great Joe Calquhoun, the UKs greatest comic artist. It’s about WW1. I think you would really like it. I don’t think many in the US know of it, or him. Always like your vids. Loved Romitas work, Millers obviously , and Typhoid Mary rocks.
I'll have to check that out! Thanks, bro!
I already own Daredevil: The Man with Fear and Daredevil: Yellow
I also remember reading Daredevil Born again for my local library
He has Superhumanly acute senses...
5:30
Just out of curiosity, is there a version if gurdian devil that's fully voiced or something? I'm having a hard time turning anything up.
I said it once i'll say it again: DareDevil NEEDS more media. Guy fucking deserves it. EDIT: I was thinking DareDevil but put Deadpool. sorry guys.
numbersandletters0I He's everywhere tho
Have you been living under a rock? Deadpool becoming big.
numbersandletters0I Deadpool has a game, multiple cameos, an entire slew of retarded Internet memes, and an upcoming movie.
Deadpool has so much media, it's actually made him more obnoxious.
Nightwing needs more media. Spawn needs more media. Judge Dredd needs more media.
All Deadpool needs is to be axed so that Marvel can breathe a long exhale of dignity and taste.
***** Sorry guys i meant DareDevil. I was tired ok?
numbersandletters0I no if he becomes popular marvel will run him into the ground like they have with spiderman if daredevil remains under the raidar the he will be able to maintain his quality much more effectivley because hacks will be less likely to use him to sling shot their carrers into the spotlight
Hey Razorfist, what were your thoughts on Daredevil:Noir...I thought it was actually the only good thing to come out of the Marvel Noir line
***** Can you please give us a link to that specific Frank Miller interview?
Great video! Do you plan to do more of this? It was a pretty good list and I wouldn't mind seeing it for other characters. I would like to hear, for example, your 10 Essential Punisher Comics.
Gonna go to the comic book store next week to see if they've got these lying around. They better have. Great video!
I loved his Flash and Fantastic Four runs .
Digging the new mic Razorfist, the sound is much so clearer now.
Got guardian devil and born again based on your recommendations both are great comics and couldn’t be more grateful to you
What I loved about Kingpin's plan in Born Again was that it wasn't over the top super villain bullshit. It wasn't Ray guns and moon magic. It was subtle and precise. And he only screwed it up when he went big super villain in a profoundly desperate and stupid manner. Great stuff.
Are there any animated shows/movies based on comics that you like in particular?
Question for you; what did you think about the Ikari character Waid introduced, or indeed that whole 'Revenge' storyline? Having not read it myself, from what I gleamed it had elements of the more serious tones of Daredevil that we know and love. Or is this an example of the "inconsistencies" you dislike about Waid?
I first watched this video years ago and now i have read 90 percent of these and daredevil is my favorite cape character.
Totally agree with you on DD Yellow. It was my first DD book, and probably still my favourite. I rank it as high as Born Again and Man Without Fear.
That's weird. Has Batman been merely coasting in Daredevil's slipstream this whole time, starting with The Dark Knight Returns, and most recently with the casting of Ben Affleck as the new Batman?
Not necessarily. Having compared various runs on both characters, the differences are far more glaring than the similarities.
Although i understand the RazörFist's criticism about Mark Waid run on the series (his point of view) I think that is one the best regular comic books series from nowadays.
razor what do you think about the participation of daredevil in civil war?
god damn it, you got me really excited for Daredevil! :D for sure gonna check out some of the stories.
Good list, if you had made it a top 20 do you think you might have included some more Denny O'Neil stories? I know better than to ask if you would have included parts of Ann Nocenti's run
where did you find that motion comic
Consider making a written list in the description, or a link to it for research's sake?
Yep, definitely reading all this stuff! Thanks for the recommendation's!
One thing that confuses me is that Matt's hair consistently swaps between red arrow blonde. Like does he keep hair dye on hand?
Kevin Smith also did a very good but also controversial run on DC's Green Arrow with Phil Hester bringing back Oliver Queen as Green Arrow!
where can I find myself a badass Charles Bronson shirt like that
Razorfist you said in a rant about Alan Moore that you were not a fan of watchmen, will you ever do a video explaining why?
360FANMAN117 Actually , he just said that people came back for "New X-men", but he never said that he liked it ( from his tumblr, he said that he definitely does not) . Me ? I consider that "run" to be the epitome of rectal writing ; heinous, mean-spirited and despicable
Fuckin A, one of my fav youtubers talks about my most anticipated show and which comics get to get the full Daredevil Experience...Good day for me.
*****
>>We deliberately put the saturation and contrast filters on because we don't want to look like every other crew cut / HD camera / popped collar dipshit on RUclips.
You cant have both content AND production values; two movie/comic book fans as ourselves can surely agree on that :)
Anyway, I understand you're not interested in technical criticism, so I'll take my leave.
***** I hadn't seen you edited the comment, so I'll address that point:
>>We go for a different look. In all things.
It is just their condition, so to speak)
As for Barbara's crippling...it is just that.
How do you feel about Fall from Grace as it relates to the symbiotic relationship between Fisk and Murdock
Great job with the list. Redemption is underrated I read that one a little while ago and really enjoyed it. But Born Again I think is a bit overrated, after the fall of MM the story dragged for me and it doesn't really get going until Nuke and Captain America show up.But that's just me.
Currently getting stuck into Redemption after buying this top 10 on the strength of Razorfist’s video. Awesome, dark, thoroughly reco-fucking-mmended.
