      Really solid scene, although if I hadn't have watched The Raid 1 + 2, it would be much higher. This series is miles better than any superhero stuff done so far when it comes to gritty.

    The crazy thing is, I've watched this show through twice and I never noticed the subtle color change of the kingpin throughout the show. I love it when shows do that, it really signifys how well it was worked on.

    I was wondering what you thought of Fisk's monologue in the back of the police van during ep 13. Personally, I thought it was the highlight of the character's portrayal and, at least for me, one of the most chilling monologues I've heard in a while simply due to the almost quietly intense and matter of fact nature of it.

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  9 лет назад +29

      jkdjr25 It was absolutely stunning. I really, really disagree with reviewers who claimed the series ran out of steam in the final episodes. the climax was highly satisfying. Kingpin planned a PERFECT escape... that was only foiled by Daredevil rising to a new level (with a badass new suit).
      I can't envision a way it could have been handled better. d'Onofrio and Cox knocked it out of the park.

      @@aldente3868 i’m conflicted tbh. He’s awesome, and obviously well educated, but he is also a self-righteous, insufferable douchebag when he decides to shit on something. He really takes things he has a problem with to the cleaners, which is fine, commendable even... it’s just that I feel he goes a little _too hard_ even when some of his targets really don’t deserve utter annihilation.

    About the Power Rangers thing, I've gotta add my two cents. Super Sentai started off as a pretty blatant take off on western superheroes, but it wasn't successful originally. What happened to make it all work was Marvel getting directly involved. While simultaneously doing a version of Spider-Man that was incredibly goofy and prominently featured the wallcrawler piloting a giant robot, because Japan, Toei created a third group of Power Rangers that was in effect their version of Captain America, co-produced by Marvel themselves. Featuring a team of international heroes, that show was Battle Fever J, and it was the ratings bonanza that launched the series into long-term success and eventually causing a later entry in the series to be adapted into Power Rangers. Odds are, none of that would have happened if Marvel hadn't gotten involved.

    Like I've asked before, would you like to do a Rageaholic Cinema: The Raid 1 and 2?
    By that I mean the Indonesian films that gave Hollywood some much-needed shock therapy. The films that set a new bar in action movies that Captain America: The Winter Soldier, John Wick, and numerous others, including the Daredevil TV series, aspired to reach. The films that I think deserve much more attention than they had gotten in their brief stint in US theaters.
    I also think that The Raid 2's car chase deserves 10 David Carradines out of 5 in the scale of 1 to Death Race.
    [I know I'm not the kind of guy who hypes a film like this, but I think it deserves a bigger audience!]

    As a reader of Spiderman as kid, Daredevil was unimpressive. They always used him as a middle-ground between Spiderman and whatever psycho killer vigilante (almost always Punisher) Spidey had to work with. Between the spoiler free section of this and your comic review, I am discovering a hero I should have loved for years. Thank you and keep up the great work you do on RUclips! I used to be a comic book nerd since I was 5 years old, I'm 32 now. But since this influx of progressive types, the industry just feels like it's alienating its older readers and catering to the SJW brigade. With Daredevil, he was already hating on the show on Twitter beforehand because it was based off Frank Miller's work on the character (he hates Miller and dark and gritty superhero stuff) and he grew up with Stan Lee's run.

    I would have liked for the fight scenes to be shot better, but that’s something that afflicts live action Marvel media at large, and one of the few areas where live action DC reigns supreme. Most of the fights in this season were poorly lit (which understandable but still kind of a problem), full of cuts, and sort of...zoomed in? Like I’m pretty sure there blows that we only half got to see.
    I liked it overall, eager to start season 2 now that I’m several years behind, lol.

    Great review. One of the biggest things that I love about this show is that they have taken the side characters such as Foggy and Karen and made them more than just dependents waiting around when Daredevil is not kicking ass or needing to be saved all the time. Everyone in this show feels like a person that you could write a Champions character on complete with loads of disadvantages. I had to watch the Fisk episode three times with the superb writing of DeKnight in showing us the man rising out of the shadows and the great parallels to Murdock.
    One thing that I think I would love to see is Punisher get this kind of treatment and intersect well with butting heads with Daredevil.

    Loving the hell out of this review! I'm currently in the middle of my own episode-by-episode review of the series and I must say, your eloquence shames me just a tad. One thing I wanted to comment on, in your complaint about why Matt never goes after the Fixer's crew, the only thing I could think of is, maybe they weren't comfortable with 12 year old Matt tearing through the Fixer's gang... but they might be okay with a 16 year old Matt doing it. In Man Without Fear, Matt & Foggy are in college 2 years after his ill-fated revenge mission. Sure, season 1 says that Matt first decided to become a vigilante after leaving L&Z, but that doesn't preclude him finding the Fixer during his hormonal teens and taking care of business. Sure, we won't get Stick admonishing him for his actions, but it might actually be better if Matt takes himself to task in that moment and chooses never to kill. I could easily see that as being a relevant flashback in a storyline that deals with him flirting with the dark side (aka, Elektra), PLUS they could use the flashback of the hooker falling to her death as an origin point to bring Typhoid Mary into the series (since, y'know, that was her).

    I actually thought about this show the day after watching it. The Kingpin was the finest performance I have seen for a long time. I remember saying to my housemate "mate, that was good, no that was 'the Wire' good.

  • @daleluck
    @daleluck 9 лет назад +6

    Personally, I don't think the fights were as good as people are saying they are (mainly to do with shit like him being clearly exhausted, then doing a ridiculous flip off a wall instead of just punching the guy next to him), and I'm still getting used to Kingpin who seems more like a big manchild than who I was expecting to find (and while that's all well and good, he's a bit too emotional about his decisions throughout). I think that last point would have benefitted from us seeing a bit of Wilson's life before he met Vanessa, as all of his "coworkers" say he's slipping but we don't actually see what he was like before. I mean, his downfall was pretty much that he chose emotion over logic when confronted by that one guy, when a criminal mastermind like him should have been able to think of another way out of it. I'm also not sold on the suit yet (seems a bit plump, though it might be the height of the actor himself giving that impression).
    Really good show though and those are pretty much my only big-ish problems with it, so I'm looking forward to how the next season does. It is a Netflix show after all so I wasn't expecting it's first season to be absolutely perfect anyway.

    • @daleluck
      @daleluck 9 лет назад

      But it didn't make any sense during the scene. Doing flips is one thing, but having a guy right next to you and being exhausted and then choosing to do a flip off the wall that's further away to do the same thing doesn't make any sense. I'm referring to the hallway scene.

    • @jonahdrake5885
      @jonahdrake5885 9 лет назад +5

      Mustering the strength to do something incredible even when exhausted isn't as uncommon as you think, especially in moments of high octane action where an individual's adrenaline level can be at an all time high.

    • @daleluck
      @daleluck 9 лет назад +4

      Jonah Drake My point isn't the effects of adrenaline, it's the functionality of the attacks he does. They don't make any sense for what he wants to do in the fight. If someone's standing in front of you and you want to hit them, you don't take a step back and jump off the wall to do it, no matter how sick it looks.
      ***** You gotta stop man, you're obliterating my sides.

    For anyone who does in fact bitch about the black and red suit in this show, they made it pretty clear that the suit wasn't finished, but that Matt needed it early. I assume that's why it has so much black in it. I assume when he takes it back and gets it completed, it'll look like a comic perfect representation of itself.

    Well, I'm someone who never followed the Daredevil series of Marvel but has only seen the Ben Affleck movie as well finishing Daredevil Season 1 mainly on your recommendation and after your Top 10 Daredevil stories a few months ago.
    Though I would agree to his resolve to not killing, I felt they've at least put in the effort of why he doesn't due to him being constantly ridiculed by his mentor, Sticks.
    "I wanted a soldier. You wanted a father." That line alone was strong enough for this origin story.
    After watching and what I'm getting from your view on the reviewers, it feels as if everyone was expecting Matt Murdok and Wilson Fisk to be their respective alter egos by the end of Episode 1 or Episode 2 with following episodes to be Daredevil teaming up with Spider-Man and Episode 4 and 5 has him dealing with Elektra and Bulls-eye. As if he's tackling on "villains-of-the-day". I liked the well-paced episodes that delve into everyone's moral ambiguity, emotional context, and resolve to fight against something bigger than them. I miss Ben.
    I liked the contrast you've made how Matt started off alone then ended up with "everything" while Wilson started off with "everything" and was left alone. I loved that every villain or ally were competent and not just "canon-fodder" to sit on the side-lines. Enemies fought very well against Matt/Daredevil, allies of Matt or Wilson went out on their own to find out what's going on that could make or break them. I miss Ben.
    All around, my interest was to watch how the martial arts was in this Season. After watching good series such as this; I feel seasons should build up all the way on the events happening and end on that note (be it a full closure or a cliffhanger segwaying into the next Season). Effectively creating a story arc(s). Heavy focus was on Matt and Wilson and every episode truly showed their character evolution or degradation.
    What really pulls me in with a story like this is when you have two characters "argue" their conflicting views and I mean a valid argument but morals are called into question.
    "Am I right for doing this? Is he really our savior? Am I just like him? Am I really the savior?" Combined with the narrative, martial arts, atmosphere, and characters brings this Daredevil to life for me.
    R.I.P. Ben

    Alright, so I watched this the other day and checked out at the spoilers. Now I'm back, and holy shit. Yeah, it was damn good.
    I'm not a cape fan, or comic fan for that matter. I know next to nothing about this, and the spoiler train didn't run me over since I ignored pretty much everything. I hadn't even planned on watching this. Imagine my surprise when fucking Gomer Pyle was the Kingpin. And you know, I think he really was the best thing about this. I'm a sucker for villains, and he played it damn well. All I remember of the Kingpin was the guy I would occasionally see in the cartoons bear hugging Spiderman to death. The way he always had that concerned/sad look when he was doing things. Plus, he was intimidating. As a 5' 6" guy you tend to notice when the bigger fellas move their weight around. Even growing up with constant self defense classes and techniques, and knowing how to handle myself in most situations, it was still unsettling to see him just fucking man handle damn near everyone. And I liked that. That's good television.
    On the costume. I'm probably way the hell off base here, but it kinda reminded me of the Dark Brotherhood outfit from Skyrim. Tight suit, black with muted red/almost burgundy patches on the shoulders. I dunno. Fucking great show, though. Best stuff I've seen in a long time.

    Well I paused the video and binged the first season. I am glad I did. My attention is difficult to hold and this show kept my eyes glued to the screen from the first scene to the last. This was good advice. I now get to watch the rest of the review.

    Regarding the suit, they are going with a more realist approach towards it, Batman Begins did it with people enjoying it. If it was simply red leather they would repeat the film and I think they don't want that. For me it worked pretty well.
    As for the Ice cream sequence Razor... That is how Matt Murdock remembers why Stick left him. The whole episodes and sequence are from Matt's memory. I still think they can explore this story in second season.

    It's a great first season but this show has in inherit advantage in the fact that it has 13 hours to develop characters and plot points as opposed to a movie 2.5.
    I expect to see Electra and Gao. I don't know much about daredevil but he is a hero I'm glad to learn about.
    My favorite part of this show was gao. The entire season the subtle hints about how dangerous she was.
    Vanessa even in the comics is dangerous? Never knew that

    They did skip huge chunks of his origin story. Expect them to return to it and really delve into the origin. I could see him eventually goaded through the confessional. I'm sure they're using the bracelet excuse merely to add some more personal connection between Matt and Stick while leaving the reality of Stick's abandonment open.

    I'm really not one for crime dramas or live action superhero shows but this series is excellent on a variety of levels. The actor playing kingpin absolutely made that character perfectly multifaceted. Some heros/villians have more than "I do good/evil because, it's the right/wrong thing to do" but just because they're developed a little more doesn't automatically mean they're outstanding, this Daredevil series is. From the main to the supporting cast, continuity, plot, just everything about it. I watched the entire season and not once do I remember thinking: "okay, that part is sub-par and could have done better." The series doesn't feel rushed and the parts that slow down a little enhances the telling of the story per episode and to the overall story. Then there's the Kingpin. A bad guy who truly believes he is the good guy, a good guy willing to do what it takes to make his vision a reality. Intelligent, calculating, methodical and strong both mentally and physically. He isn't perfect and he knows it. Always trying to play to his strengths and keep his weaknesses hidden deep down and far away. Like an anvil he remains cool and undamaged no matter how many times he is struck....until that one button of his is pushed, threatening his mom, his girl or his vision of hell's kitchen should be (okay, okay, he's got more than one mental "launch all nukes now" button or more accurately several isolated arming circuits that all do the same thing, arm every silo and all slaved to the one big, candy apple red, master launch button that simply reads: "commit"

    First off, thank you kindly for the recommendation of this excellent show, I'm two episodes in and loving every minute.
    One thing I'd like to add about the fight scenes is that Daredevil clearly takes an ass kicking every time he goes toe-to-toe with the bad guys. Whereas in the batman movies he's basically invincible until some dipshit gets a lucky shot with a knife, Daredevil trades blows with his enemies and often has to haul himself off the ground to keep going. This is excellent because it reinforces exactly what they keep telling you the whole show. Murdocks take hits, but always get back up.

    Just finished up my first run through today - excellent stuff. I plan on revisiting twice before it's relaunch in April 2016. Three really cool things to ponder (keep in mind I have never read the comics):
    1. The Punisher. He's confirmed. If Fiske's portrayal is anything to go by, how brutal can they possibly go with Punisher's potrayal without it being too intense for a series (even a Netflix series)?
    2. Elektra is confirmed. Do you think they'll keep her more than a season? Stick only featured in one episode. Or could they perhaps be using her to eventually launch a spin off?
    3. Gow. Easily the most frightening figure in Hell's Kitchen in my opinion. Could she return?
    I also liked your interpretation of the white painting. But here's another to consider; could white not also be the colour of whitewashing? Keeping in mind that up until he meets Vanessa he wears all black. I don't think this is arbitrary. Personally, the wall for me is a demonstration of the denial Fiske is in by thinking he is doing the city good when he is in fact Hell's Kitchen's black plague.

    While i don't disagree with your opinion on Waid's run on Daredevil, i just want to point out to people not familiar with his other work that he is still a pretty good writer, he just doesn't get Daredevil's character in the same way Loeb doesn't get cosmic marvel, i heavily recomend reading Waid's work for dc which is fenomenal, specially Kingdom Come, 52 weeks and Superman Birthright

    Hey Razor. I loved the series as well and was wondering what are your thoughts on possible storylines for season 2.
    I think it'd be great if they adapted issues 170-172 from Miller's run. I don't know if the storyline in those issues has been given a name(like how 227-232 are the Born Again story), but it essentially deals with the Kingpin returning to New York and being forced to be the top crime boss again. I loved that story and thought it was right when Daredevil went full crime drama and I couldn't stop reading every issue after.
    Thanks for introducing me to DD by the way. I just got started with the Guardian Devil storyline.

    I forgot to mention that on the point about the black spots on the Daredevil suit, the man who made it even stated that the suit was not 100% and that the black would provide the most protection, leading me to believe the plan was to cover most every area in the black armor then paint it all red which could easily happen. Even if it does not the suit is still awesome looking. Season 2 cannot come quick enough!

    • @bZman
      @bZman 9 лет назад

      I do as well, but Matt does not want people to know he is blind and branding is very important when it comes to super heroes. I look forward to seeing the costume evolve though. Nothing is better than small tweaks to the costume that show a hero growing and adapting the suit to fit his needs.

    I definitely enjoyed Daredevil but it was *significantly* darker than I went in expecting, as somebody not familiar with the source material (never was a comic reader)
    I think the thing that impressed me the most was the *patience* of the writers.
    Nothing was rushed. There was no pandering inclusion of a rogues gallery or monster of the week.
    It was one complete, complicated narrative that fleshed out the characters very well.
    Now, I don't think "monster of the week" is necessarily bad, I just think it gets so horribly misused as modern writers attempt to make each episode into a complete standalone story.
    I think the the power of Daredevil was that each episode was just a piece of the whole. I hope it will serve as a master class for future superhero shows (as there seems to be a plethora incoming)
    As much as I enjoyed the Flash and Arrow I think they lacked that... clarity of purpose displayed in Daredevil.
    Cant wait for season 2

    I'm not into the outfit, but that's more because I never really liked Daredevil's look to begin with
    I mean on paper it sounds like a great outfit, but most iterations of it just make him look like red batman, especially the face part
