You know what I found out when it comes down to the front wides, or the height Middles, was that if a movie is using all six height speakers, sometimes the wides aren't used, but if the wides are used significantly, then sometimes the middle heights aren't used. I just keep all them on. Because a lot of my movies are mixed with Front wides. And there's A LOT of music out there that uses front wide support, and it is a huge difference, especially when they mix vocals in the front wides to make their voice sound much closer to you in your space. Definitely do some more listening to them. Also, when you use DTS X Pro, or neural X, those front wides are always on.
PS. So we're sayin' that UNLESS material is specifically mixed in 9.1.4 (like Channa's mix) that the DOLBY Surround Upmixer is not going to evenly spread out tge Front stage as well as the DSU tends to split up the Rear signal like in DPLIIX etc?
My front row is just forward of the center line of my room and thus my Wide zone sounds great. I have no need for actual Wide channels there. I will test it at some point in the future. Its possible my back row could benefit from them. But my MLP doesnt need them.
