Ohh "American Tail" ! Hi David ! You are awesome 🥰✡️ My Jewish Grandpa was friends with "Schoolboy" Bernie Friedkin and my Uncle with Red Buttons. They were all really tough and eschewed HaShem/Judaism. My cousin's Jewish Grandpa made his fortune selling eggs in the street as a small child. He was religious, though, and his sons all are well known.
Hey from Alabama Dave! We missed you for a minute. My dad and I watched several movies per your recommendation. Particularly Hester Street (your favorite) and Fiddler (one of ours cause we are both musicians). Anyway great to see you back. Love the channel. The one on Jewish songwriters and Xmas tunes was great.
Steven Spielberg's ancestors were among the Jews who had to flee Russia. Also did you know Fievel was named after Spielberg's grandfather? In fact a lot of the scenes from the movie were based of stories his grandfather would tell him about life in his day.
My step-grandfather came to America fleeing the chaos of the Russian Revolution and had the Ellis Island experience. On their entry the immigration intake official not only americanized my poppy's and his brother's names but he also made a mistake and swapped the boys' names so Murray became Louis and Louis became Murray who eventually became my beloved Poppy. Because their papers read the wrong names but the papers were their "official" documents, the boys decided that they would forever go by the swapped names.
So my understanding is the immigration officer unilaterely changing names is a misconception and it was social pressure to conform that led to people changing their own names more often. Can you comment on that? Also I've not heard of American Pickle before, is it good?
Also have you seen Mrs. Santa Claus with Angela Landsbury it's pretty interesting I think the Deutro-Protagonist is a Jewish Suffergette in early twentieth century New York, and part of the story is her mother's anxities that her daughter will draw the attention of the police and they'll get in trouble and maybe have to flee the country again. Though it's a Christmas movie the character's Jewishness is sorta natural in the story and they end up participating in the Christmas fun at the end as friends, but not with any need to change. I think it's probably deserves an award for "best Jewish character in a Christmas movie."
From what I understand this far I believe that it is largely a simplification that people's names were changed at Ellis Island. I'll have to look into it more for American Tail episode. Also check out the American Pickle video on the channel
just as good as always!, well done!
Love how comprehensive this is!! Learned so much
Love!!! Thanks Dave!!!💖
Loved An American Tail as a kid. Thankyou.😊
I loved An American Tale. I think it was the movie responsible for my entire historical fiction obsession, especially the Gilded Age of NYC.
Great Job Dave ! 👍- greetings from a polish Jew in Montreal
Great content, thank you 😊

Amazing video
Hey, David.."The Believer" with Ryan Gosling is UNBELIEVABLE. WOW. Ouch. Can you analyze "Left Luggage" sometime ? That's my favorite movie.
Ok I'll have to see why it's a favorite! And yes the believer is just crazy. I wonder how much is based on reality
