Every history class needs to teach the uprising in Newark in 1967. We need to teach all American History , the good, the bad, and strive for a better tomorrow and learn from the past.
Thanks for an informative and balanced report on the riots. I lived in East Orange, on the border of Newark during that time. It was a tenuous five days. We didn't learn much about the cause, just that it was happening. All we knew about it was what we heard on TV. Thanks for filling in some of the gaps. 55 years later, still putting everything into perspective.
The cab driver was known, and cited a lot for driving with no license. A cop car was double parked making a stop, and the cabbie grew impatient and went around, probably going against traffic. No big deal but I’m sure the cops didn’t appreciate that cabbie. People from the neighborhood were allowed into the precinct to view the cabbie-so they knew. And a black police captain was brought down to advise the cabbie wasn’t dead. A lot of students from Newark at Princeton wrote lengthy theses on the riots. Amazing that ordinary whites blame blacks, and vice versa. Never occurs that these problems occur due to actions of people whose pay grades are WAY ABOVE those of the ordinary people involved. Maybe we all need to get a clue. Newark is totally changed and totally worse. So what gives?
Will you PLEASE do a video narrative on Paul R. Williams, the first black architect who commissioned drawings to who’s who in the entertainment industry and has buildings still standing today in Los Angeles. I love your narratives. They’re cool and informative!
I was a member of the N J National Guard in 1967 and immediately deployed to Springfield Avenue in Newark, which was the very heart of the riots and unfortunately significant destruction. I spent 5 days sleeping outside in the old Roosevelt Stadium during the day and being deployed each night .That was 54 years ago and my primary observation remains how the rioters in Newark burned down their own neighborhoods! Soon after the riots, just as 1 example, ALL major grocery stores moved OUT of Newark, leaving the poor people of the inner city ( of Newark) with few options o purchase even the basics of food and having to spend more for the very basics at much smaller specialty stores, etc.This in turn frustrated the people even more.I believe that riots unfortunately hurt the very people that riot! BTW I was shot at by a sniper on a roof on the 1st night on Springfeild Ave. Thankfully he missed.

So im guessing people who are abused and oppressed on a daily basis should just sit there and take it just to make business owners, many who don't live there, can feel ok... our founding fathers would literally laugh at that notion... they literally rooted and fought a violent revolution over tax increases... imagine what would of happened if the British were actively beating people within an inch of their lives just because said person drive around the cops on the opposite side of the road
Let's not get FACTS in the way of erroneous opinions...the cab driver that was suppose to have been beaten within an inch of his life by the police....never was.He was inside the police station the whole time and not injured. So, the spark that was suppossed to have started the whole riot was nonexistent.I grew up in a small town about 15 miles from Newark( Cranford, N J). My Mother & Father would drive to Newark every Saturday to shop( Mom did not drive).Springfield Avenue in Newark was a WONDERFUL place to shop! Many fine Butcher stores, Fish Mongers, Bakeries, etc. When we needed clothes Mom would take us on the bus into Newark to Bambergers or Hanes. It was the place to go to shop, they had everything! So what do they have now or even 3 years after the riots ? Slums...My point was that these people foolishly destroyed their own neighborhoods and economic lifelines and that to me was/is so very sad. There had to be a better way....

I was born in Passaic in 1960. School was like the movie "Stand by Me". We moved to Ringwood and life was better, but in 1977, we left Jersey for good.Life was MUCH better in our new state of Oregon.
I am amazed. At a loss for words. I learned so much and think this video should be shown in every school. The research alone is very impressive but the presentation using old photographs, news clippings, and drawings is so good. I didn't want it to end.
This video in my opinion touched on few facts as to the many underlying causes of this riot. This was a decent video but didn’t go far enough. For instance, the firefighter that died had a heart attack, some of the women killed was the result of state police shooting at other local police (a clear lack of command and control.) The National Guard had to make an announcement over loudspeakers to tell them to ceasefire, “you’re firing at each other!” There were at least two snipers that claimed to have fired shots into the air to divert police attention away from the building. (Ebony Magazine, August, 1967.) 1967 was known as the summer of love as similar riots broke out in several major cities. Disenfranchisement and police brutality were the common themes that lit the powder kegs. Newark was termed the predictable insurrection because it was just that, predictable! It’s a shame how time losses some of the most significant facts.
I moved here in 1965 I was 6 months old and coming from Miami Beach Florida, "I don't know what my father was thinking". But jobs in the South weren't paying enough so he decided to bring us up here to East Orange New Jersey which is a couple of blocks from Newark. Little did we know that in 2 years the Newark riots would break out and it got difficult after that. Newark does have a vibrant section that is called the hipster millennium White population section on the north side of downtown Newark. So gentrification has happened here in Newark the surounding areas are still as the map in this video portrays with that exception. But things aren't well here in Newark. It is no longer that vibrant suburban area.
Grew up in Newark 1967 age 8 the riot was devastating gun fire , fires 🔥 at night sirens beautiful Springfield ave and other businesses destroyed life property loss it was a scary time especially so young asked my father why he said son we as a people have had enough and now releasing rage held in for so long 😢
My ( white ) parents lived in Cranford, N J about 18 miles from Newark. My Mom LOVED shopping in Newark ! Springfield Ave for the excellent Butchers, Bakeries, and all things FOOD, etc. The best around IMO. We never went into Springfield Ave after the riots...these riots were a significant loss for everyone...

Like my grandmother used to say it takes two to tango. This did not happen in a vacuum, and it was not entirely provoked by the government. You are leaving out the blacks participation in the actual riots. Maybe they weren’t getting adequate representation. But they kept voting for and still keep voting for the same Democrat party. And it was Black people, looting and rioting. And those people had to live with the destruction that they made for many many years. I remember projects going up beautiful buildings for people to inhabit at low cost and those same buildings 10/20 years later being demolished, What you hope to succeed in but other than Destroying your own environment is beyond me. I remember a time where after those riots I don’t think there was one food store with in the city limits of Newark for probably another 40 years give or take 10 years one way or another. And for black folks to succeed in my opinion, they have to accept responsibility for their actions and a lot of this destruction, none of this takes place in a vacuum. I understand that. My point is. Government is no one‘s friend. The black community should have found the wherewithal within themselves to pick themselves up by their bootstraps or continue to live in squalor. I’ll tell you one thing for sure. My European relatives would never have stood for it. Even if the government came in and destroyed their living space. They would’ve taken it upon themselvesto start over with nothing. Like most of them did at At during the depression.
Neighboring Jersey City suffered from the same decline, disinvestment, and racial tensions as Newark yet that city has worked hard on cleaning itself up, redeveloping and attracting major new investment and residents. If current trends continue unabated, Jersey City could eventually surpass Newark as the largest city in New Jersey. Why is Newark still stagnant, decayed, and in the doldrums while the rest of the Tri state area is booming and prospering. What is wrong with Newark?

I've been researching as many riots and masscres involving Blacks fighting for their Civil Rights and you are the first I've found who has taken the time out Beautifully put the information tohether. Thank you, I live in Newark and anm seeing it come to life again in 2022 with new lofts, rentals And retail but they are NOT providing near enough housing for low income, however Newark offers tremendous opportunities for education and decent jobs with benefits. I believe money rules and there is no real regard for low income housing sadly. If residents would go after the opportunities it would eliminate the need for the low income housing.

This video is for me an example of why "Critical Race Theory" is one of the best ideas to come out any law school in American history. The analysis of federal and state laws and policies that negatively affected and still affect black Americans is the only way to make positive change. It is not a tool to divide people or to call white people evil, it is a fact-based inquiry into social problems that reasonable people should credit and support. Great job!
We Americans acted outraged by how the Germans treated the Jews in the 1940s while we treated the blacks the same if not worse here in America until the 60s had a civil rights movement finally. That’s very recent.

I would love to figure out a way to bring more vibrance to Newark... Newark is a city of mostly black working families today so I don't think the town needs to focus on bringing whites to the city although I pray that whites would feel welcome in the city if they chose to live here.... Well my father was Plainfield officer John V Gleason who was the only fatality in Plainfield. I am saddened that some overlook his horrific death. I understand the issues of black Americans but it should be said his death was unjustified. Someone should do a documentary about his death
Might add, during this period Blacks also started leaving Newark and crossing into Irvington( which is now somewhat north of 80% Black. There were also riots in Plainfield and in Perth Amboy. Interesting to note that following the Newark riots they arrested over 1500 rioters and yet in the January 6 2021 takeover of the Capitol in DC no one has been arrested - hmmmmnnnnnn!!!!!
Houses outside Newark looks better with lawns and backyards(reminds me of real america). Entire newark looks cramped, houses are 2-3 feet apart. From an Asian immigrant perspective
I call them “hug me houses” u can literally stand in the windows of two neighboring houses and reach out and hug your neighbor. That’s how close the houses in Newark are
I was 9 years old during the 1967 riots Newark was golden. however black leaders encouraged people to burn down their own houses the Italian's did not moved from North Newark, they line up with guns and dare anyone to come into the area, my father worked in Kearny, a town next to Newark and within a week of the riots we moved to Kearny a mostly white town so black folks moved from Newark also it was a horror site as our windows were shot out because someone was on the roof throwing molotov cocktails at the Nation guards in tanks, and I could go on, but I will never understand why you would burn down where you live, and the current Mayor of Newark's father was encouraging this crazy😢
Before 1960 cities in the NE were prosperous loud and proud! Since then and especially in the last 25 yrs outflight be every demographic will no dought hollow out most large cities on the East Coast!
The extension of this is the establishment of the NOI (Nation of Islam) creating a hub in Newark many of the FOI (Fruit of Islam) security and soldiers of the nation were from Newark as an extension of this event

Thank you, I live in Newark and anm seeing it come to life again in 2022 with new lofts, rentals And retail but they are NOT providing near enough housing for low income, however Newark offers tremendous opportunities for education and decent jobs with benefits. I believe money rules and there is no real regard for low income housing sadly. If residents would go after the opportunities it would eliminate the need for the low income housing.

This video is for me an example of why "Critical Race Theory" is one of the best ideas to come out any law school in American history. The analysis of federal and state laws and policies that negatively affected and still affect black Americans is the only way to make positive change. It is not a tool to divide people or to call white people evil, it is a fact-based inquiry into social problems that reasonable people should credit and support. Great job!

I would love to figure out a way to bring more vibrance to Newark... Newark is a city of mostly black working families today so I don't think the town needs to focus on bringing whites to the city although I pray that whites would feel welcome in the city if they chose to live here.... I hate to focus on our differences as people and now more then ever I wish to focus on us all being of one race one people all children of GOD... If this vibrance came to the city all would benefit greatly and pray that day comes soon no matter what it takes I believe in all people in GOD and in the future of a better tomorrow...
Well, I lived in this area during this time. And while you’re depiction of what had transpired is true. And I specifically mentioned that it is true. It only tells half the story. Like my grandmother used to say it takes two to tango. This did not happen in a vacuum, and it was not entirely provoked by the government.
You are leaving out the blacks participation in the actual riots. Maybe they weren’t getting adequate representation. But they kept voting for and still keep voting for the same Democrat party. And it was Black people, looting and rioting. And those people had to live with the destruction that they made for many many years. I remember projects going up beautiful buildings for people to inhabit at low cost and those same buildings 10/20 years later being demolished, What you hope to succeed in but other than Destroying your own environment is beyond me. I remember a time where after those riots I don’t think there was one food store with in the city limits of Newark for probably another 40 years give or take 10 years one way or another. And for black folks to succeed in my opinion, they have to accept responsibility for their actions and a lot of this destruction, none of this takes place in a vacuum. I understand that.
My point is. Government is no one‘s friend. The black community should have found the wherewithal within themselves to pick themselves up by their bootstraps or continue to live in squalor. I’ll tell you one thing for sure. My European relatives would never have stood for it. Even if the government came in and destroyed their living space. They would’ve taken it upon themselvesto start over with nothing. Like most of them did during the time of the depression.

Well my father was Plainfield officer John V Gleason who was the only fatality in Plainfield. I am saddened that some overlook his horrific death. I understand the issues of black Americans but it should be said his death was unjustified. Someone should do a documentary about his death

Might add, during this period Blacks also started leaving Newark and crossing into Irvington( which is now somewhat north of 80% Black. There were also riots in Plainfield and in Perth Amboy. Interesting to note that following the Newark riots they arrested over 1500 rioters and yet in the January 6 2021 takeover of the Capitol in DC no one has been arrested - hmmmmnnnnnn!!!!!
Black militants stormed the US capital building with guns in the 70s and it was called a protest.
UPDATE: 890 rioters from the January 6th, 2021 capital riot have now been found guilty, with over 1200 of them arrested.

I was 9 years old during the 1967 riots Newark was golden. however black leaders encouraged people to burn down their own houses the Italian's did not moved from North Newark, they line up with guns and dare anyone to come into the area, my father worked in Kearny, a town next to Newark and within a week of the riots we moved to Kearny a mostly white town so black folks moved from Newark also it was a horror site as our windows were shot out because someone was on the roof throwing molotov cocktails at the Nation guards in tanks, and I could go on, but I will never understand why you would burn down where you live, and the current Mayor of Newark's father was encouraging this crazy😢
