I found out about Mr. Lightfoot's passing in yesterday's early morning rain. RIP Gordon, you will be sorely missed but your music will live on forever.
Gordon Lightfoot is a poet from a great era of original groundbreaking songwriters whose likes may not pass this way again. Those windows open for a short time, and vanish as suddenly as they appeared. God forever bless the heart of a poet.
Funny you should say that... this song, Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind...all kind of intertwined and took me back that folk, poeti, searching but hopeful time and for whatever thought process brought to mind Rod McKuen, Kahlil Gibran, Peter, Paul and Mary....etc...Was a young wife and mother, and they all brought me comfort on a turbulent time.
Yes, the world of coffee houses and folk singer/songwriters yielded some incredible talent. When you have thousands of dedicated musicians honing their craft, those that rise to the top are going to be special. Currently its not just folk singers its musicians in general have no place to play, not enough paying gigs to keep many going long enough to develop the skills. We can only hope that over time that will change....because their are Gordon Lightfoots out there and Joni Mitchells, that will never realize their abilities....that's the real shame for us all.
Gordon was a legend in the 70's and still is today. His voice has that same distinctive sound unlike some other artists whose voices have changed markedly over 30 + years.
I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot. Saw him on the Johnny Cash Summer Show a long time ago and my Mother recorded this because she wanted to save Johnny Cash while I wore the tape out playing Gordon Lightfoot. Luvya, Mr. Lightfoot. Rock on.
1610austin I completely agree with you a good canadian singer and he will be a truly great legend of all time I'm not tired to listen his music since my teenage time. Love you Gordon
Richard this Canadian appreciates your pride in your country. Like family, cousins maybe, that scrap once in a while, but woe betide any that try to come between.
I saw Gordon at the Academy of Music in Philly in the early/mid 70's. It was the perfect place for his concert. What a night...he was incredible! Listening to his music today still reminds my heart of an early love that never really left.
When I was 18 and went into the Army I learned this song without knowing it. While the Drill Sergeants marched us around they would call out cadence calls, and one of them was "In the Early Morning Rain". It was sung out to us and we called back with the same cadence and tune of his song, but modified lyrics. It went like this: In the early morning rain With my weapon in my hand And my pockets full of sand As I lay me down to rest I caught a bullet in my chest Tell my baby not to cry Because I'll never say goodbye In the early morning rain.
Saw Gordy twice. The first time was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is the Yooper Anthem and he got a two minute standing roaring ovation for singing it to us . GL GL!
The world is a little dimmer after the passing of this giant. But heaven now enjoys him as we all did and do. The reason that we can see so far is because we stand on the shoulder of giants like Gordon Lightfoot
You know how old this song is when he calls a 707 big! Love and miss this great artist so much and I am a musician so I know how hard it is to write a good song!
Such a beautiful composition and heart-aching sentiment. The parting between lovers takes place at an airport in this song, but it could be a train station or anywhere that people say goodbye. In my case, it was the exit ramp of a highway. She walked away, and I could see her receding silhouette for what seemed like forever. She was gone but I would meet her again two years later. Life had changed. She got hurt by the next man and was looking for comfort. Unexpectedly, we made love, but there was no going back to the way it was. We were heading in different directions in life. I was scholarly and she was simple blue-collar. The parting had no drama as it had the first time out on the highway exit. We would meet again 30 years later, but only on social media. She had her church, two kids and a nasty divorce. I had one kid and a wonderful wife of 25 years, the true love of my life. Still, I would never regret the time we had together, but the image of her walking away on the highway exit has never left my mind. Thank-you Mr. Lightfoot for reminding me of the image every time I hear this song.
Imitation is the greatest tribute to any work! Just look at the list of artists who covered ‘ Early Morning Rain’. My favorite song he ever wrote and performed was’ Did She Mention My Name’. Thanks Gordon for all!
He *is still* a real star with a real voice.... and we can *still* see him in 2022! :) He's not gone yet! And with his soundtracks, he'll live with us forever.
Mark Slovak ...Hi Mark! I love ❤️ Gordon Lightfoot ....I grew up in Minneapolis but used to fly to London Ont to see my future Ex husband. He took me to a concert and I was in love....Not with my ex...with Gordon!
@@vivianperino5006 ----Very Same Thing Happened to Me, When My Ex-husband and I Saw Gordon in Concert in Traverse City, Michigan, in the late 1970's. I Felt So Incredibly in Love, & it Was Not With My Husband. I've Loved Gordon since I First Saw Him In College in ,1972. 💗💗💗💗
I was fortunate to meet him just outside the theatre as he was leaving in Indianapolis and we talked one on one. He's the real deal, down to earth guy. I just wanted to tell him how I appreciated his music and that it had helped me through a rough time in my life. I don't know why I did that rather unexpected thing but he was very kind without being patronizing. We talked some before he gave me his autograph. As is the case I just thought of Early Morning Rain and here we are. I noticed he was playing a 12 string guitar very cool.
Young today don't known this place in time. There was adventure, romance, anticipation and wonder. There was life and a world to discover. I think there is a tragedy in having everything at our fingertips and nothing to discover. Thanks and RIP Gordon.
To think I sat in Gord's living room on Beaumont Road in Toronto and held that iconic 12 string guitar in my hands...12 strings, 12 keys, six sets of guitar wires one octave apart, and not a human in the world that can pick it, strum it, or caress it with the skill and craftsmanship that Gord can.
hi I'm your one fan i like your song even your old now but your voice still had a spirit you can a live who's people died thanks your wonderful song Mr Gordon
Wish I could have been there for this performance. Gordon was part of the soundtrack of my life. I was early twenties when his songs came to the US. If you know about his life there is much to be admired. I'll continue to play his music .
I am 99.99% positive , that I lived across the street from the look out that Gord and his son went to , to watch planes take off at LAX . I had just moved there from BC Canada to El Segundo , March 1964 . - which is immediately south of the airport . Imperial Hwy . Actually I lived in an apt. row on Imperial Ave. in town . The hwy. was LA County - then the airport to the north . It still is to this day a favorite spot to watch planes take off and land . I like to think that I said hi to him in passing - just another "painter passing through".

That is so true and sadly it will never happen again, during our life anyway...
The world will never ever see another singer/ songwriter like Mr. Gordon Lightfoot. I'm a major fan.
Big 707 set to go❤

OMG his voice still rocks. wow! I miss this kinda music.
He's Music will live on forever ❤️ RIP Gordon Lightfoot 🤍
One of my all time favorites and Gordon gives the best rendition I have ever heard.
Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song.
RIP Gordon Lightfoot. One of the GREATEST Canadian singers of all time.
The greatest IMHO because he was a singer and song writer and remained true to his roots.
I would include Burton Cummings and Celine Dion on that list of great Canadian singers.
I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot. Saw him on the Johnny Cash Summer Show a long time ago and my Mother recorded this because she wanted to save Johnny Cash while I wore the tape out playing Gordon Lightfoot. Luvya, Mr. Lightfoot. Rock on.

Gordon Lightfoot your are the GOAT!! No one wrote a song like you! I hope to meet you in the next world sometime on the future.
Saw him live in Minneapolis, MN in 1985. One of only a few live
concerts I've bothered to go to and probably the only one I
really enjoyed. Nuff said.

A great marriage of song and words
No one ever matched his performance of this song.
