Lost dear Ian and now also Gordon. Both Canadian music icons that were part of so many lives for a long time. Hope their music continues to live on.❤❤❤
I was in Danang, Vietnam (67-68) when one of my fellow marines left for the states. He had this collection of vinyl records that included the first three or four Ian and Sylvia records and he gave it all to me. God, I'd listen to those records over and over till I wore the vinyl out (well I scratched it all to hell anyway). I saw them down in Greenwich Village right after I got our and they were changing their sound...more of a nashville tone. This is a great version. Both of them had sweet voices. And Gordon showing up...ahhh Just wonderful, all three.
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story. Viet Nam - all Americans should know this tragic story - I lost 2 high school friends for what ? I heard Gordon Lightfoot here in L.A. - 1973 - about to give birth to my daughter. The venue was small and very crowded. I could hardly fit by the tables. Hope life has turned out well for you. Sending hugs.
Amen. I was taken by Ian's voice when he first hit the music scene way back in the early sixties. Also a gifted song writer. Paired with Silvia's angelic voice it was heaven to listen to. I just stumbled onto this video and it actually made me cry at 76. I do often long for those simpler times when the music was, well, beautiful.
I met Mr Lightfoot almost two years ago as I live in his hometown. He autographed my book Lightfoot and I got some pictures of him that day. A Very fond memory for a Gordon Lightfoot fan. 🐾😀🌟🌈🦋🇨🇦🇨🇦
I remember when this first came out. I was in boot camp in Orlando, FL. We use to sit on the roof of the barracks listen this song, watching the planes fly over and think about home.
On 1May2023, Gordon Lightfoot left us, Ian in Dec2022. What a unique and wonderful moment this is, three great pioneers of Canadian music together. Priceless, thank you, all three of you.
Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson and Neil Young all plied their trade in Toronto at sometime during the sixties. What a world class group of songwriters!
@@primeaccount4122 except Ian Tyson wrote 'Four Strong Winds", which has been voted the greatest Canadian song ever written. Even Gord sang it, and Ian and Sylvia reciprocated by covering 'Early Morning Rain."
Well this is beautiful it’s hard to understand why other 18 year old kids like me to listen to music about guns and drugs when this is real music it talks about life and life lessons learned
I first heard Ian and Sylvia at a college special concert in Minnesota around 1963 or 64. I immediately bought the LP of Ian and Sylvia with this song. They were my favorite folksingers for many years until they split up. I think their version was my favorite. They were both very young when I heard them the first time. She was about 21, he was about 34. I was sorry when they split up, and also when they moved on to more popular music. The folk music fad declined, and many folksingers moved on.
Ian and Sylvia belonged together as legends, along with Gordon Lightfoot. Canadian Country is forever! And the best thing is that I am going to see Gordon Lightfoot again live in Cupertino, and this time, along with my father! Yahoo!
Thank you very much. We're proud to be Canadians though we sometimes feel in the States shadow. We are a country with over 35 million souls these days.
Hard to believe now but once upon a distant time Gordon Lightfoot was an 'unknown' song writer. I&S recorcded this tune, Marry Robbins did 'Ribbon of Darkness' and then everyone knew.
When I lived in Arizona I was 2 minutes from the carefree highway, and I was blown away when I heard the story of how Gordon came to write that song carefree highway, the world will miss his talent ,no doubt bout that.!
This rendition performance is close to being magical. Over the years I have kept track of the various performances of this piece, but, this is truly magic. Thanks for posting this piece.
Oh my gosh. Seeing my favorite Canadian country singers/ songwriters together in this mesmerizing concert! I wanted to cry because I missed hearing them so much. I listened to Ian and Sylvia on the records, but I’m so blessed and fortunate to see Gordon Lightfoot in concert two times! I am so saddened to hear of Ian Tyson’s passing including that of Gordon Lightfoot as well. To me, they will always be my favorites for many long years.
just now learning about Ian and Sylvia thanks to you tube- i was in radio for a couple of decades and played their songs by other people- man they do it best- glad i found them- met lightfoot once backstage- very hospitable offered free drinks but he never touched a drop- very huimble too
This song has a real touching quality, after all these years--it provides the emotional reward we long for from a song and leaves you wanting more of these artists. Goodness, this concert was what? 28 years ago, but they are timeless performers. I'm so glad for their artistry, and whatever produced it. Thank you, Ian, Sylvia if you happen to drop in! Really thanks!
A truly wonderful event here. I always loved Ian & Sylvia 's version of Early Morning Rain. With Gordon joining them and singing in their key is so amazing to see. Thank you for the music.
All the way from high School 1964 NY, the authentic duet, great catalog keepers of the flame, first guitar purchase, the first duty is to remember, Bravo
Loved this special when it first came out. I had it on VHS,now my VCR is eating my tapes. So glad you are showing parts of this reunion. I am hoping to see Sylvia in Orillia(Gordons hometown) in October. Love all thguests and their rich harmonies. Thank you. 😀🌟🌈🦋
Whoever sings with Sylvia will sound great. She is, perhaps, the greatest harmony and backup artist of that era. Gordon is smooth and rich as can be, and Ian has that cowboy authenticity. All three are great singers.
Sylvia Fricker to me. I adore her. Ian loved her too but found her "bossy". She can bossy me anytime . I love her forever template soul never die ♥ The voice of an angel.
Fantastic! I just go back nearly 25 Years for 2 times. First to 1986 and than 1965. A great track with so much feeling in it I wish to be on one of their concerts. How it would sound with Peter, Paul & Mary together?
I still remember Ian & Sylvia singing this at the old Cellar Door, back in the late 60s, early 70s. I saw every performance of theirs there except tor the 18 months I was sent overseas. Now, particularly, I am so grateful that I could see them live, close-up, and hear the staggering, raw power that Ian Tyson cut loose with at live performances. I like their recordings, but the true power and stage presence just don't come through. Ian's ability to absolutely grab and hold an audience is something you seldom see in music. Elvis had it, and a few others. It's a true loss to music that Ian's voice is apparently now gone, but he can still write, and we have a number of his performances recorded. I only wish that more of their early live performances weren't recorded for us.

That is a great memory and story. Thanks so much for your service and for sharing this story !!!
Our famous Canadian, cowboy singer, Ian Tyson, dead today at 89.
Thank you Ian for your music and your songs. 😢

Rest in peace Ian. Rest in peace Gordon 😪🇨🇦
Best thing about RUclips is finding gems like this - live performances by great artists. Gordon Lightfoot is one of the best songwriters ever.

Wow, what a treasure.
How good was Gordon Lightfoot? He was John Prine's song writing hero.
Hey man im a former soldier from Canada be proud my friend and i love gordon too

The core of great Canadian folk music. So proud to be a Canadian tonight.

Some of the absolute best singing and music. Three unsurpassed artists.
brought me to tears . . . "feeling" songs like this. Your songs Gordon and Ian will live on forever! Thank you.

Right on. And I once had the privilege of meeting Gordon Lightfoot at a Canadian concert. A cherished memory.
Relationships, jobs, seasons, Love?? all end but great music can last forever and this touches my soul on soo many levels
So unusual to see Gordon sing without a guitar! He's sounds amazing in this clip.
Sometimes, no matter how busy I am, I have to stop and listen to the music. Love this rendition.
What a voice Gordon had !

So much genuine talent in these three people, it’s awesome.
The singing gives me goose bumps.
So graceful and beautiful. Music history and memories unfold.
You can feel Gordon's heart touching yours, & it brings water, to my eyes.
Canada has produced so many great musicians and composers/writers for a country of 20 some million people. What a rich and beautiful legacy.

Indeed, a real gem. I saw Gordon Lightfoot sing this song in Hartford, Conn. in the 70s. Such a magical song.
God, I had forgotten this one. So great to hear again after decades.
One of the greatest songs ever by a duo that was the best.

Is truly best version of this song I've ever heard as well
classic old folk music for us old folkies...
I loved how Ian has to recuperate and gather his thoughts as he's wowed by just how much "bossier" Sylvia has become.
Signature song of another iconic legend Gordon Lightfoot.
It just doesn't get much better. thank you Johnny!
my favorite rendition of this song, by far ... thanx
Rip Gord and Ian ... you will be missed badly
Great Canadian singers. Love them all..Ian, Sylvia and definitely Gordon.
Such rare talent! To make us all feel like we were present with these guys from the beginning. :]
I love Gord's little wink at Ian.

"Early Morning Rain" (sometimes "Early Mornin' Rain") is a song composed and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.

Maybe Lightfoot's best song, and this is the best cover I've ever heard. Tysons voice is almost the equal of Gordo's. Just a perfect version.
So beautiful. Sylvia looks so so lovingly at Gordon. B
I notice that. Perhaps she left ian for gordie
