Thank You all for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed this one. Although I grew up a Southern Rock influenced guitarist (besides Beatles, and Classic,Symphonic Rock, of course) I think I am just a Balladeer at heart. That is where I am very comfortable. Here's to a better, healthy and safe 2021. Thanks for listening to us, F and F, and everything inbetween!
Thank *you*, Darwin. Your work is a gift to all of us. (But we do try to give back via the tip jar, the merch purchases, etc.) And this one is just really, really special!
Darwin I have been a F&F fan for a couple of years and always came back for the great harmonies from the Foxes. However, ever since this video came out, I start my F&F binge right here. I hope we can hear more from you in the future
Darwin: I am 62 and grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot sing this classic song, my Mom is 85 and also loves Gordon Lightfoot. When I stumbled across you singing this I was instantly transported back to the late 70's/early 80's. When I shared it w/my Mom... your singing brought tears to her eyes. We have compared your easy, mellow style of singing to Glen Yarbrough, who was a wonderful balladeer until he retired. We both think you are incredibly talented and as a guitar player myself, I absolutely love your instrumental riffs in the middle of this song. Please consider recording more ballads like this one... as lead singer for F&F. You are the reason that I explored F&F and became a huge fan forever. Thank YOU!
As I revisit this RUclips page and performance, I want to reiterate my appreciation for all of the kind words and comments re: 'Early Mornin' Rain'. As I previously mentioned, a lifetime of Music, mostly in the Southern Rock genre, has led me to the awareness and knowledge that as I've aged, so has my style changed.(in a positive way, and I hope you all agree) These days I'm more of a Wandering ('Wondering') Minstrel. And I'm ok with that and hope you all are too. THANKS VERY MUCH!
This song done by the wandering musician is real nice. I think what happens is we begin to mellow as we grow older, changing music style and choices not a bad thing at all.
As a young Second Lieutenant, I sat in the waiting room at the airport at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, one cold, dark morning in February 1971, and watched a long line of even younger soldiers slowly working their way out the door toward the aircraft waiting to take them to Viet Nam. This song and also "Leavin' On A Jet Plane" both played at one point or another. The expressions on their faces were so sad that It was almost more than I could bear to see. I was on my way to Germany. Lucky me. Damned lucky. 24 months later, I got to come home alive and in one piece. I still wonder how many of those young men I watched that day didn't.
I have to agree with you about back in the days of Vietnam. I went over in 1968 just in time for the Tet offense. I was with the 4th infantry division located in the central highlands. On February 5th my birthday we lost eight guys from my company clearing the NVA out of the city of Kontum . Later in April we got our ass kicked at a place called Chu Moor Mountain. Every time I hear this song it makes me reflect back to Vietnam and the thoughts we all had while serving there and being trapped over there. I would do it all again for the right cause. Last but not least I have come to be a big fan of F&F. and this guy not only sings great but can play the hell out of his guitar. Thank you so much for the music and memories. I am U.S. Army Retired MOPH.

They really are amazing!! That Bass is so good!! I saw Gordon for the first time during his tour for “Summertime Dream” and it struck me then and the many times after what an amazing sound he and the band had! They replicate that really well!! So impressed!!❤️
This is the first time I've heard Darwin sing solo. He is always a part of the back up singers doing harmony. Darwin you have a beautiful voice. You guys are amazing...the Foxes too.
FYI, that brick building in the background is where Tim and Darwin went to high school. At that time it was Hapeville High School. It's an elementary school now. Tim quarterbacked the football team and he and Darwin were playing together back then as well. Yeah, so it’s facetiously funny that Tim says at the end “I’ve never heard of it before .... best kept secret in Atlanta”! I’ve been there on a trip to visit the former Fujicolor Processing Plant - don’t think it’s still around, but it must have been a major employer there. I was once a trainer for FUJIFILM, USA.
Best rendition of Early Morning Rain on RUclips! I just noticed the drummer playing an electric guitar while keeping time. As a drummer, I admire his talent!
That's part of what makes them so good! Classic Rock artists and the younger voices with great harmonies! Love Gordon Lightfoot, and this is really good!
Of course, I will pay money or tomatoes right now to spent live time with them. Lol, the Ladies are like flowers that sprang up from a rich fertile soil of talent, adding a wonderful fragrance to a garden of handmade music. Having an offspring to teach and to help carry forward a treasure of musical genetics would seem to be a man's summit in life. Lol But all I continue to see are more and more dynamics created by that Father of that Lady that has become so brillent with her hard work. 😏
Have you heard and seen Darwin on the first song of the first set of the first public performance by Foxes and fossils ever? ruclips.net/video/S23VK1v9dB8/видео.html
Maybe the F&F our Happy just doing what they Do, But If they have an Agent maybe they they should get a Super Agent to take them to the Top into Major Concerts! No reason why they cant Open for a Big Name Act in a Big venue after Covid. But One thing I'm Good at with Music, is Listening!!!
Tim's almost constant smile during this song says a lot about his love for his old friend, Darwin, and his love for what he is doing. This is what makes a great performance- musicians who love each other and what they are doing.
Yeah... there are some groups where that mutual love & admiration really shines through and it makes the experience all the better. Darwin, Johnny, Tim: You guys are exceptionally gifted and seasoned artists.
Darwin does such a beautiful job. The feeling he puts into this song sounds like he’s actually sitting in the early morning rain with a dollar in his hand.
I almost feel guilty for adding my two cents here, but I was one of the lucky group that got to witness this event in person. I had just gotten out of the hospital from major surgery , and to say the evening of pure joy and great music was a gift would be a gross under statement. Sorry most of you only get to hear this short excerpt from a wonderful experience, It was just what an old man needed. A great big thanks to all the F&F. (Including the pretty ones)

I'm closing in on 70yrs old and I wanted to tell you guys I simply can't get enough! I sit on the couch with my tablet and headphones and play your music over and over. Im fortunate to have stumbled on your work! Thank you!
I just hit 70 in December '20 and have been a Gordon Lightfoot fan since 1966. This cover is the BEST I've ever heard. Al three musicians - and I use the term properly - are incrediby talented. I'm now a fan forever.
Just a 68 year old kid, but sure love Gordon’s songs and always have. Darwin and the band aced this one as they always do. I’d love to hear them do more Lightfoot. Love that Rainsong , Darwin! I’ve got the SG shorty.
I’m Canadian too and have seen Gordon Lightfoot in concert a few times. I think Gordon would definitely approve of this version of his song. Well done gentlemen.👍👍
The problem is, they all have great voices, so no fair benching one to make room for another. And I guess the solution therefore must be, more videos so everyone has plenty of mic time. (I obviously have no appreciation of the effort that goes into making a really good video....)
I first commented 7 months ago on this cover of Gordon Lightfoots’ song. I have never posted a second comment ever. I have been a F&F fan for many years. I have to admit there is something special about this cover song. Maybe it’s the way Darwin, Tim and Johnny just blend their talents so seamlessly. I find I keep revisiting this video because I so enjoy Darwin’s version, even better than the original. Those ladies are mighty sweet and sing like angels, but when I hear this song I say get those talented fossils in more of these type songs out there on video.
Same here - I was about to write a second comment (I guess I just did). I always loved this song but Dar gives it something down to earth and really special. I listen to this about once a day.
I'm Canadian, so I've listened to a fair bit of Gordon Lightfoot, attended his concerts over decades, heard many of my contemporaries cover him. This rendition is as faithful to the spirit of the song as any I've heard. Nice job on the vocal, Darwin, and the lead was simply outstanding. And Johnny Pike, the one-man rhythm section, really kept the feel of the song in a nice pocket. This is really fun to listen to.
@@robertsadler1766 Depending on what you're listening to. In the original version, the guitar is strummed. I much prefer Darwin's Travis picking. The vocal at times is reminiscent of Willie Nelson. I don't know, did Willie ever cover this?
I've seen this before, but hadn't noticed that Johnny was playing bass while playing drum pedals. 4s on the bass, 2s on the hi-hat, and dotted somethings on the kick drum! Great stuff!
Tim is an awesome multi-talented architect of F&F but also a band member/leader of the Mustangs and is the production genius of video/audio .. Darwin has always had focus on music but also had a day job career too .. this video makes it clear what leads the F&F Band and it's stunning to watch them give selflessly the front credit to each of the foxes in their own way .. they're family without ego dividing them .. and a musical group that are beyond pro .. they are a unique production factory of music industry masters that are not controlled by the music industry .. thanks to all of them
Great job gentlemen. I would be honored if you guys would watch my RUclips video. Jerry Ruffino Solo. Same type of music 🎶 you play. Keep up the great work guys.
In the 3 years since this rendition was released, I revisit it at least once a week. I feel Gordon would give his stamp of approval on this one. Much love F&F.
And once again Darwin demonstrates why its well worth keeping him around. Great voice and wonderful guitar work as usual, and always a special treat to listen to one of those Darwin solos. Had no idea Johnny plays bass - AND plays drums at the same time!
Johnny is also an accomplished guitar player. The living room of his house is loaded with instruments. He also plays the keyboards from time to time, so does Darwin.
Holy moly... These "Fossils Only" tunes are outstanding! Darwin's singing and vocal tone are just beautiful and so gentle and comforting, and then he picks a lead guitar part that is just spectacular. What talent. Not even mentioning Johnny playing bass and drums simultaneously. Once again, great job guys!
On November 7, 1989 I became sober. And on that day I listened to Gordon Lightfoot's rendition of this song for the entire day... from waking up to going to sleep. I set the CD player to repeat and hung on for dear life. It did the job. There but for the grace of God, that would have been me in the early morning rain.
Ahhhh, this is like my 5 time watching/listening to this over the last few months and I only just realized the bass player is simultaneously the drummer! Awesome!
I’d love to see Darwin do a solo album of songs like this. I think it would be a blessing to all those who spend a lot of time traveling on the road to be able to pop in a cd and relax to his soft and smooth voice.
In love with Darwin. His voice curls around your soul and takes you on a willing journey. His quiet, humble demeanor sets the stage for the great impact of his coaxing voice and amazing guitar skills. What a treasure...
I don't think I've come across such a brilliant and versatile group of musicians since the Eagles. Just like the Eagles the musical chemistry works sublimely too.
i’ve turned to youtube rather than news. and now sports too. although i’ve listened to new and very old music, i come back to these guys every night. every night. they’re talented, humble and i am saving my airline miles to fly wherever they next perform. thank you!!
It's two in the morning. Fighting back a pain of love in the heart. The voice is as Lightfoot as ever. And too the the unforgettable combination of alone & song & nothing better. Thank you. It was a long time coming but it was I who wasn't there. God bless.
Good God Almighty, that was great. One on my favorite songs, mainly because my father played it a million times on our old cheap stereo. Darwin did a great job on that on vocals and guitar. Tim's background singing game it depth. If the "crisii," ever ends I'm coming to Hapeville or where ever to see yall. That's a great deal of talent on that stage. Everybody be well and be safe.
NEVER underestimate an old, bearded guy playing Lightfoot tunes on a graphite guitar. This is the best cover I've ever heard! There are even echoes of Red Shea's original leads in there and a really tasty updated break!
Sammie , so nice to see you , you're beautiful as ever , so you getting ready to go back to campus to finish your Master Degree. Sammie be safe if you do, love ya girl💜💋🤗. Tim the 3 of you guys sound fantastic as per usual, can't wait to hear more , the best independent group I have listened to, Foxes and Fossils, completely the best. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💜🎸🎙🎼👍👍👍☮😎👏👏👏
Just donated $100 to you guys. This is the best song only upstaged by Judy Blue Eyes which you carried as well!!! You are all so good and have provided so much enjoyment to me and my family.

Darwin .. stands in the background for 20 years .. and He can sing like Willie!!! Plays like anyone !!! Like the Best! Sings the Same! Salute Dar!!! L U !!
Tim's smile is still infectious, Darwin's singing and picking is uplifting and Johnny's basses keep the beat going long after the song. Thanks Guys I need this kind of fix these days but I still miss the foxes, they made me feel young again and I can hear how they'd harmonize in the back ground.
Legend has it that Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song in Goose Bay Labrador , a military town in the north of my home province. This, I think, is my favourite version outside of the original recording by Mr. Lightfoot himself. Well done gentlemen
Been lovin Foxes and Fossils for awhile now........never thought I could like something without any of the foxes on board.. but boy was I wrong.... Darwin did the best version of this song I have ever heard...goosebumbs for a 70+ guy....... just a totally enjoyable song to relax and listen to.... :))) Thank YOu!

Every time I perform this is always my first song. Thanks for the memories.
Best version of Early Morning Rain I have ever heard including Peter Paul & Mary and Elvis. Fantastic job! Thank You.
I Think Elvis did "Kentucky Rain" But I'm not a Big Elvis Fan. Of Course, Elvis has done Everything..Twice!!
Best Version is by Gordon Lightfoot....
Sounds heavily influenced by the Ian & Sylvia version - similar licks, some of the same word changes ...
I agree.
I agree but when you get a chance you should take a listen to Bobby Bares version too.
Darwin is a cross between smooth voiced Glen Campbell and Willy Nelson. The best of both
hear willie nelson clearly
Love his guitar playing also. Hear a touch of Jerry Garcia (check out 3:25 -- )
@@maryrigotti2924 Indeed I hear it too
Blue Sky Flyer that’s saying a lot about his talent, but I can’t disagree.
Yes!
I've seen this before, but hadn't noticed that Johnny was playing bass while playing drum pedals. 4s on the bass, 2s on the hi-hat, and dotted somethings on the kick drum! Great stuff!
This brings sunshine to my Scottish ears...Perfection!
Excellent. I would like to hear a Fossil rendition of Lightfoot's "Sun Down" - might include the Foxes 😊
R.I.P. Gordo. Thank you Darwin, this is a gift - my favorite version of a timeless masterpiece from one of the greatest storytellers ever to do it.
AMEN!!!! 👍🏻☮️🤘🏻❤️
Very well said, I love the real people of this world, they excel way beyond those that achieve "fame".
Fabulous song! Darwin has the perfect voice and the guitar licks to cover this song beautifully.
In the 3 years since this rendition was released, I revisit it at least once a week. I feel Gordon would give his stamp of approval on this one. Much love F&F.
MAN WHAT A VOICE. BEAUTIFUL
And once again Darwin demonstrates why its well worth keeping him around. Great voice and wonderful guitar work as usual, and always a special treat to listen to one of those Darwin solos. Had no idea Johnny plays bass - AND plays drums at the same time!
See the "Hey Ho" cover.
Well, maybe not at the SAME time, lol.
I always suspected true drummers have an extra set of hands.
@@c.a.rankin7426 One of the few I havent seen because i dont care for the song, lol
Johnny is also an accomplished guitar player. The living room of his house is loaded with instruments. He also plays the keyboards from time to time, so does Darwin.
Takes me back over the years to another time and place.
You guys are amazing. My first time to hear you on you tube and im stuck to it just listening to your wonderful brand of music.
Yeah, that's impressive doing the bass drum and high hat while playing the bass guitar. That has to be hard.
Proud for you man
So proud of you! Stay safe and well!
fknA dude!!!!!
Way to go and GOOD LUCK....... ALWAYS!
Ahhhh, this is like my 5 time watching/listening to this over the last few months and I only just realized the bass player is simultaneously the drummer! Awesome!
Actually the drummer playing bass.
Darwin has a great voice!! Have him do some more lead singing/solos!! Yee haw!! Great band!!!!
I’d love to see Darwin do a solo album of songs like this. I think it would be a blessing to all those who spend a lot of time traveling on the road to be able to pop in a cd and relax to his soft and smooth voice.
How did it evolve?
In love with Darwin. His voice curls around your soul and takes you on a willing journey. His quiet, humble demeanor sets the stage for the great impact of his coaxing voice and amazing guitar skills. What a treasure...
Pure excellence is all I can say and that from a musco that's been gigging nearly 50 years.
Darwin, You should be Awarded a Grammy for this Performance! Phenomenal!
Not much music gives me chills and/or brings me to tears...but yours? Exquisite!
Grew up in Canada listening to Gordon Lightfoot, what a beautiful rendition.
Might just be the world's best group!!!
I keep returning to this performance. Soooo good!
What a great voice. Not too much, not too little.
Sitting on my porch in Stanwood Washington listening to the Fossils and content as can be.
Thanks guys.
When I listen to this I feel I’m walking down a quiet road, misty rain falling, reflecting on how nice this song sounds.
Great rendition of a great song. The drummer is simultaneously playing bass guitar too! They are amazing musicians
Another Canadian chiming in here...Darwin you need to tackle the whole Lightfoot songbook, please!
I second that from USA
Agree, I'd love to hear him do Edmund Fitzgerald
Great suggestion!
ThankYou. that is a very high compliment. I've always loved Gordon's songs, and later Tony Rice's versions. he's one helluva picke, that TR...
And then, Ian & Sylvia with the Foxes.
Beautiful performance. I'm really impressed with Johnny playing bass and drums at the same time! So crazy much talent in this group.
Best cut on Early Morning Rain I have ever heard. It don't get no better than this.
Fossils turning back time with some Gordon Lightfoot! Wonderful performance, and it sounded amazing!👏👏🙏🎶
I don't think I've come across such a brilliant and versatile group of musicians since the Eagles. Just like the Eagles the musical chemistry works sublimely too.
This is one of my favorite song.
I listen to this song two or three times a week, just love it!!!
i’ve turned to youtube rather than news. and now sports too. although i’ve listened to new and very old music, i come back to these guys every night. every night. they’re talented, humble and i am saving my airline miles to fly wherever they next perform. thank you!!
Two shows scheduled, December 29 & 30 2022, Hapeville Georgia, near the Atlanta airport. Stay tuned for details.
Yes, us old Grays have to stick together. And I love the Rainsong for performing. Full, glassy tone, and pretty much indestructible. Thanks!
Best version of this anywhere on RUclips
Sammie , so nice to see you , you're beautiful as ever , so you getting ready to go back to campus to finish your Master Degree. Sammie be safe if you do, love ya girl💜💋🤗.
Tim the 3 of you guys sound fantastic as per usual, can't wait to hear more , the best independent group I have listened to, Foxes and Fossils, completely the best. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💜🎸🎙🎼👍👍👍☮😎👏👏👏
Hope for better days for humanity. Love from 🇨🇦 Canada ❤️
Fark, I love this song, great version of 3 mates jammin on a Sunday arvo and enjoying their own company
Wow, he's an amazing singer and that guitar playing! Wow! What a beautiful cover. These men are so talented.
Just donated $100 to you guys. This is the best song only upstaged by Judy Blue Eyes which you carried as well!!! You are all so good and have provided so much enjoyment to me and my family.
R.I.P Gordon Lightfoot. I've tried to find performances that pay the best kind of tribute to him, but I just keep coing back to this one.
If you haven't check out Ian and Sylvia's version, it's worth a listen. ruclips.net/video/FyhZXdJ_4l0/видео.html - as is Eva Cassidy's - ruclips.net/video/P9U_g7ftEyk/видео.html
Three good friends making beautiful music together. Don’t get much better than that.
Thanks for sharing it with us.
Does anyone know why Darwin mouths "Thank you" to Tim near the end of the song?
What a stunning voice.Its a brilliant cover.
I love Gordon Lightfoot's music but this is by far my favorite rendition of this song. Beautiful 😍
I love this song, one of (if not the only) greatest versions ever. These guys are great.
Darwin .. stands in the background for 20 years .. and He can sing like Willie!!! Plays like anyone !!! Like the Best! Sings the Same! Salute Dar!!! L U !!
I was thinking Willie also. But richer. Just beautiful.
@@frankjones4550 Thanks 4 That! They Killed this song... and wow Can Dar play the G ? God Bless my friends playing on the 4 th!
@frankjones4550 Thanks 4 That! They Killed this song... and wow Can Dar play the G ? God Bless my friends playing on the 4 th!
Dar wasnt with F&F from 2011 - late 2019 except 2 shows that he subbed for Toby. He had always been active solo and in other groups.
Thats gotta be the most moving singing, bass, guitar, sound. Absolutely beautiful
Darwin is absolutely awesome with vocals and musicianship!
Darwin, your voice is as smooth as aged bourbon. Great job. One of my favorite videos.
I’ve watched this so many times and love it more each time
If ever you need a "pick up", then this is where you come to listen to a great rendition of a great tune. Always puts a smile on my face.
