  • Super Smash Bros Ultimate has held the spotlight for so long these past few years that it's easy to forget the impact Smash 4 made. Not only did it provide such an extensive and lengthy challenge for Completionists out there, but it single-handedly saved the Wii U console. Now when I last completed this game I as focusing on getting the episode out as soon as possible, and in doing so I missed a lot of my own opinions and voice about the game. With both the Wii U and the Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS completed (they are both basically the same game don't let Sakurai tell you otherwise) I can do the proper Smash Bros review I wanted to.
Let me know what you thought about my Smash 4 review! What was your favorite fighter from this game?

Completing this game with no golden hammers is one of my proudest gaming moments to date. I would say one of the few things that Smash 4 excels better at compared to Ultimate (speaking from a competitive standpoint) is the controls and buffer system. Smash 4 actually controls decently well and you can still feel precise with proper timing and inputs. However, bc Ultimate has a huge buffer window, it makes misinputs much more frequent and can lead to actions that you don't want a lot more times than you think. It makes Ultimate very clunky and unresponsive for precise play.

@@ericmay560 I would agree with you to some degree. The mechanics are arguably better in Ultimate, but at the cost of control due to terrible buffer system, awful c-stick and loss of cool movement options like perfect pivoting. Worse controls makes Ultimate arguably worse than Smash 4 imo.

One of the differences between the trophies in previous Smash Titles and The Spirits in Ultimate is The Descriptions for the Trophies. They tell you a little about about the Characters, Items, and locations that you get Trophies of. Spirits however don't have any information on them. At All.

I like how the description says the 3ds version is basically the same game despite what Sakurai says, even though they have completely different game modes. Classic mode is different between the two games, a good percentage of the Achievements in 3ds version are exclusive to that version as well. Not to mention a different Stage list, which isn't going to come up when your only goal is to complete the games. I honestly like the 3ds stages better than the WiiU stages. But in all seriousness, the reason Sakurai says 3ds is a different game is because they had to make it from scratch separately from the WiiU version. For most of the content they could just take the WiiU version and just downgrade. So both versions essentially got a full game development.

Everyone always forget about the 3ds version because it isnt HD like its Wii U counterpart. in my opinion the 3ds version was more fun to play then the Wii U version, i even still play it from time to time to this day i almost never play Smash for Wii U these days. Honestly, I think of smash 4 kinda frequently. It was the smash that got me more into competitive, it was the origin of the epic trailers, DLC and those EPIC “Master” boss fights are one of my favourite parts of the game. Those hype final smash trophies are worth collecting for me because they’re just so epic and I absolutely LOVE some of the custom moves (collecting those was always a pain due to rng tho) in the end, Smash 4 made Ultimate possible and for that, I am truly grateful 😌
Also Jirard, every time you mentioned “features that aren’t in ultimate” you showed a clip of home run contest which was added in ultimate in a patch after the game came out

As a smasher, I mostly remember this game for its jank. There’s so many occurrences of moves killing off the top at like 10%, and ladder combos off of platforms that just kind of kill you. Ultimate toned back the jank a ton (but also introduces some other issues like the poorly implemented buffer system). Melee’s got a ton of jank as well, but it usually doesn’t look super janky when it happens. This game just has a bunch of stuff that works but doesn’t look like it should, and weird interactions.

The one thing I miss the most are custom moves. I understand implementing them again would've been unfeasible because of Ultimate's roster size, but changing moves to allow for better recovery, more stage control, better kill power etc. depending on your preference was honestly pretty cool and I hope we'll see it return later in the series in an even better form (moves unlocked from the start, giving each character completely different moves instead of just variations).

I completely agree that this game deserves to be remembered. While I have been playing Super Smash Bros ever since Melee and Brawl, this game is what truly grew my passion for Smash Bros as a whole. It's what got me excited to watch Nintendo Directs too! Both this and Smash 3DS gave me the best memories from 2014-2016! Also, you gotta give this game credit for being for the most part, welcoming to the newcomers. This time the roster felt a lot more balanced to the point where almost any character had the potential to take on anyone. And this Smash Bros in particular actually felt fun for the most part! Flowed well, ran well, and controlled just fine! Smash 3DS/Wii U may be dominated by its predecessor, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but I will forever cherish those moments from Smash Wii U.
And the game didn't really die. Excluding that incident at EVO with the two Bayonetta players, the game as a whole was just kind of... left to rot. You can disagree with me all you want, but Bayonetta isn't what killed the game. We cannot let things such as this affect the overall impact the game had on us. It's just the fact that, after the final presentation and final update for Smash 4, Sakurai and his team just discontinued making patches and updates sooner than later, completely leaving it behind. Its heyday is over, but the memories and the impact it had will live on.

I haven't watched much of your videos, but am pleasantly surprised that a big-name RUclipsr is giving Smash 4 some love!
You see, I maintained a huge love of SSB4 since release. I am attracted to its colorful aesthetic, variety of modes, trophy text, and even the giant starting roster.
Outside of the N64 game, Super Smash Bros. games have never been ones I have completed 100%. Instead, I simply focus on unlocking every fighter, stage, song, and fighter trophy. With Smash 4, I have enjoyed doing all of that.
This is one of the few times where I didn't hear any ripping on Classic Mode. I have always found the Wii U version of it enjoyable. Granted, I typically just fight Master Edges and Master Shadow. I like the option of choosing what match you partake in.
As for the modes, I find almost every one fun. All-Star is the best in the series IMO, Smash Tour is something that I get a kick out of doing, I like the types of battles done in Special Orders, and things like the Home-Run Contest, Target Blast, Trophy Rush and Multi-Man Smash are cute time sinks.
Again, let me clarify that I am _not_ a completionist. No, I simply play Smash just for basic amusement. Both Wii U and 3DS comprise my favorite game in the series.
    Great video!

I always thought the old all star mode could be reworked in ultimate. Have everything work the same, except the player endlessly fights randomly selected spirit battles with an occasional boss fight. The player retains damage from previous fights and has limited healing items, so the challenge comes from managing resources to last as long as possible.

I sincerely miss the special orders so much, Ultimate's single player really starts lacking once you have almost all the spirits and see a ton of repeats. I spent so much time in crazy orders as a fun time waster
I loved the classic mode on Smash 4 too, each run was different and you had choices that impacted your matches, plus intruders would show up sometimes to make things interesting. Then master core really made the final boss actually FEEL like a final boss
Ultimate has cool classic mode callbacks yeah but honestly a lot of them could be better and they start blending together. The lack of form changes for master and crazy hand means that for a big portion of the cast you'll be fighting one or both way way too much

This is my favorite Smash game, hands down. I know Ultimate is better, but I just love this game. I have so many memories of this game. It's quite possibly one of my favorite games.
Also, I love the Wii U. It had such good exclusives, and rivals the Switch in my opinion.

Jirard: When was the last time you thought about smash 4
Me: As a Cloud main, I think about smash 4 an unhealthy amount.

I'm just very disappointed and mad at times that trophies didn't come back in smash ultimate. That was my favourite part of playing smash games. Collecting those virtual figurines and reading all the information too.
