One of the differences between the trophies in previous Smash Titles and The Spirits in Ultimate is The Descriptions for the Trophies. They tell you a little about about the Characters, Items, and locations that you get Trophies of. Spirits however don't have any information on them. At All.
The descriptions were invaluable for me back in the Gamecube days, as the internet was still formative and you couldn't just Wikipedia whatever trophy you got iirc. It even teased Animal Crossing before release since KK Slider was a trophy from a "future release" game.

Ultimate may have made this game irrelevant in many ways, but I’ll always have a fondness for it. This was THE game during my college years. It was first revealed the summer before my freshman year, and I enjoyed the reveals up until it was released my sophomore year, and beyond with DLC. I have a lot of great memories playing this with friends. We liked to hold tournaments together, and the time we spent involved some of the happiest memories from that point of my life. Plus, college is a great time for Smash since so many people wanted to play. Was easy to find a match.
Before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released in December 2018 I've kept hearing the main theme of that game countless times I completely forgot what Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's theme sounded like.
I bought my wii U in 2015 with this game. It was such a difficult time in my life and this game brought me such joy. That and your content pulled me through. Thank you again Mr Completionist!
Brawl was the first Super Smash Bros game I played but Super Smash Bros for Wii U was the First Smash game where I actually tried to get good at the game and try to fight characters on harder difficulties so it still holds a soft spot for me
That and the still active Virtual Console, and the backwards compatibility with the Wii. Oh, and loading all Wii eshop downloads to it. And the many, many, many amazing games. WiiU for life!
As far as I’m concerned, Smash 4 was the birth of modern Smash. It’s hard for me to go back to the first three games, but Smash 4 and Ultimate feel just right. And the Wii U version’s classic mode is the best in the series.
As one of the very few people who actually got a Wii U, This was my first Smash Bros game, and along with 3D World, it helped me get into Nintendo and Video Games.
Smash 4 Wii U was BY FAR my most played game on the system. Over 650 hours. Next most played was Mario Kart 8 at 170. College sure gave me a lot of free time to play this and I enjoyed pretty much every second. I haven’t touched Smash 4 since ultimate released but I remember it very fondly. Probably still my favorite Wii U game and this actually makes me want to go back and play it again for nostalgia’s sake
This is one of the episodes of New Game Plus that I genuinely thought we’d never get, due to the sheer amount of both Challenges & Trophies. I appreciate your dedication as always Jirard!
My best friend and I played the hell out of Smash for 3DS. We were able to bring our 3DS's to school and play Smash Run and customizing our characters' stats and moves were a breath of fresh air.
I love many of the modes in Sm4sh, both the U and 3DS editions, and would love if after all the Fighters' Pass additions, maybe the Ultimate team might consider porting some old modes to the new hotness. Who wouldn't love an Ultimate, online multiplayer Smash Run? A couch-co-op Smash board game whose name escapes me? A fresh take on Subspace Emissary? New battles with other boss monsters like Tabuu and the big shadow monster-turned-fortress guy? There's a lot we don't have in Ultimate despite it being.... Ultimate.
Ah Smash 4. I’ll never forget seeing someone try to enter their Marth amiibo, aptly named Roy in a tournament I was at and it was beating actual contestants in friendlies. Made for a hilarious memory
As a smasher, I mostly remember this game for its jank. There’s so many occurrences of moves killing off the top at like 10%, and ladder combos off of platforms that just kind of kill you. Ultimate toned back the jank a ton (but also introduces some other issues like the poorly implemented buffer system). Melee’s got a ton of jank as well, but it usually doesn’t look super janky when it happens. This game just has a bunch of stuff that works but doesn’t look like it should, and weird interactions.

Nah, Wii U's online is better. They had it right with "For Fun" and "For Glory". Nothing is more annoying than wanting a 1v1 on FD and getting a 4 player free-for-all with items. Also in Smash 4 you can fight CPU's with a friend online! Try doing that in Smash Ultimate.
bayonetta 2 was what pushed me to finally get a wii u. smash 4 3ds and smash 4 wii u have completely different trophies and music selection. the 3ds version has more music and trophies from handheld games and smash 4 has more music and trophies from console games. i miss trophies especially the final smash trophies for beating all star mode.
All Star mode was a homage to Kirby Super Star as both series were created by Sakurai along with many many other hidden themes and homages. Like how Master Hand is also another Kirby reference
10:16 The Event matches mode were originally from Melee, and were the highlight of that game's 1-player stuff for me. Finally beating "The Showdown" with Giga Bowser, Ganondorf, and Mewtwo was an incredible feeling as a kid.
I'm so sad everyone hates this one. I've played all the Smash games to date and I've gotta say that Wii U is my favorite, if I could bring a couple of stages, Byleth, the Belmonts, and directional air dodging I probably wouldn't go back to Ultimate.
He says when was the last time you thought of smash 4. Me I legit talked about it yesterday because of how all wii U games are basically on switch and there is literally no reason to buy a wii u but smash 4
Honestly, I still use my Wii U to play a lot of Nintendo’s classic titles since Nintendo didn’t just drop the ball with releasing classic titles on Switch, they buried that ball 6 feet under. I’ve recently been playing a lot of Earthbound on it.
16:40 YESSSS! Bring back the individualised target levels. Those levels were my obsession back in 2000, took my so long to figure out each target for link, but that retrospectively was a great training experience!
What a well done video I also agree with the fact that singleplayer content is done better in Smash 3DS/Wii U. Ultimate is better for sure, but there’s also some things that it’s previous installment did better too. You also make some interesting points about things like classic mode and the extra stuff. Like some people have said already I played this game a lot from 2014-2016 when I was finishing middle school to the earlier years of high school
Smash on the wiiu was the definitive edition of the two I ended up playing way more of the 3ds for one reason. Smash run. It felt like a new version of city trials from kirby air ride, a forgotten gem on the gamecube. But it was the 3ds for smash so I do understand why people weren't happy with that. I wish they brought it back like the way it was
This game holds a special place in my heart. My brother and I would play this together all the time and i have many many replays of us together. He took his life in 2019 but thanks to this games replay features i can view his ass whoopings anytime.
I liked the custom moves, and wished they had returned. I also enjoy the Amiibo aspect in that, as someone who doesn't play against others often, it's nice to have a computer that is capable of surpassing your base abilities and allows you to get better without online functionality
I liked the custom moves too, and am sad that they removed the feature instead of making it more universal. Would also have liked to see the amiibo FP feature expanded, so people could have FP characters without having to own the physical amiibos. It added a huge element to the game, but people mostly couldn't use it because it was locked behind an expensive and inconvenient hardware dongle system.
Why are the top 5 rows of the challenge board either a strict time limit, a brutally hard thing or something that will take way to long or a combination or 2 of those things
You're the first person I've seen praising for Wii U's Classic Mode. While I prefer Ultimate's version where each character gets a tailor-made route, I also enjoyed the freedom and surprise elements present here. The one thing I miss the most are custom moves. I understand implementing them again would've been unfeasible because of Ultimate's roster size, but changing moves to allow for better recovery, more stage control, better kill power etc. depending on your preference was honestly pretty cool and I hope we'll see it return later in the series in an even better form (moves unlocked from the start, giving each character completely different moves instead of just variations).
@@finalsmash9607 same, i started with the zero series so that design will always be my favorite but the og zero with a alternate skin would be my number one most wanted character
I haven't watched much of your videos, but am pleasantly surprised that a big-name RUclipsr is giving Smash 4 some love! You see, I maintained a huge love of SSB4 since release. I am attracted to its colorful aesthetic, variety of modes, trophy text, and even the giant starting roster. Outside of the N64 game, Super Smash Bros. games have never been ones I have completed 100%. Instead, I simply focus on unlocking every fighter, stage, song, and fighter trophy. With Smash 4, I have enjoyed doing all of that. This is one of the few times where I didn't hear any ripping on Classic Mode. I have always found the Wii U version of it enjoyable. Granted, I typically just fight Master Edges and Master Shadow. I like the option of choosing what match you partake in. As for the modes, I find almost every one fun. All-Star is the best in the series IMO, Smash Tour is something that I get a kick out of doing, I like the types of battles done in Special Orders, and things like the Home-Run Contest, Target Blast, Trophy Rush and Multi-Man Smash are cute time sinks. Again, let me clarify that I am _not_ a completionist. No, I simply play Smash just for basic amusement. Both Wii U and 3DS comprise my favorite game in the series. Great video!
What I really enjoyed with Smash 4 was how you could look at all the trophies lined up together whether it was in the trophy board or the big display. Really wished they had that in ultimate
I haven't watched the video yet, but just by reading the title, I can say that I didn't forget Smash 4. I still play it because it has better online than ultimate. The match making is better and the lag is just as bad, but the online is free, so it gets a pass
Not really forgotten as much as overshadowed. Between the technically impressive 3DS release, with modes like Smash Run and having better overall stages, and the absolutely massive Ultimate including every character, almost every stage, thousands of songs, and further polishing the gameplay, it's easily overlooked. Especially on Nintendo's worst selling home console
@@Grassdewd Ohhh that's what he means! Kinda true then, I think the only clear identity was been the best online smash thanks to For glory. The problem is, in order to play online, you need people to play too, and since Ult have pretty much has all the popularity well......his only identity now it can't be used, or as big as it used to. As for Brawl, maybe it is considered the black sheep competitively, but at least has the subspace.
The thing I miss most are the little blurbs you get with the trophies. I loved going through them and learning a little bit about the characters and what game they were from. And spirits have absolutely none of that.
This one was good, but I found myself playing the 3DS version more often because of Smash Run. My wifi was terrible too, so I never got to play online.
The one thing I hate about Classic Mode is the ridiculously difficult Master Core at max difficulty. It's impossible. I still haven't beaten it and gotten that achievement..
I played this for hours on end on 3DS. Like damn I was 14 and after mainly playing melee and brawl growing up getting that at Christmas was massive. I absolutely loved it and the DLC only made things better. This era of smash was when I got into that hype phase along with the RUclipsrs that came with that. The reactions, directs, new characters, online betting on fights. Stupidly fun and pretty nostalgic tbh.
Why do you have to hate on custom moves, there were some characters where I preferred their customs over their normal moves, for some it was because their move sets got replaced, but custom allowed for you to use them. Can't remember off the top of my head, I think Luigi had a move replaced, I know adding wolf's standard special to Fox was cool since Wolf didn't return.

I think this is one of your best videos and you should be proud of the work you put into it. I really enjoyed the nostalgia trip of that Wii U cold open as well.
I love the set up you did for the episode, with the implied "dusting off" of the Wii U. XD Very clever
Brawl was the first Super Smash Bros game I played but Super Smash Bros for Wii U was the First Smash game where I actually tried to get good at the game and try to fight characters on harder difficulties so it still holds a soft spot for me
Man, I miss trophies
Smash 4, Wind Waker HD and 3D World are still the only reason that I dust off my Wii U today, I’ll never forget them.
The WiiU with Nintendon't is amazing. Highly recommend.
“Super Smash Bros Wii U: The forgotten gem”
Super Smash Bros Brawl: “Am I a joke to you?”
A lot of people remember and love Brawl for Subspace Emmisary and introducing third parties . Smash 4 was thrown to the wayside for Ultimate.
nope, everybody loves brawl
Stop acting like wii is forgotten, it isn't
@@diegone080 Competitive fanbase dislikes Brawl for some reason
Brawl is still getting mods even after Project M's development shut down.
@@PeruvianPotato "some reason"
It's trips and allowing for endless grabs with a bunch of characters.
As well as Meta Knight.
This is one of the episodes of New Game Plus that I genuinely thought we’d never get, due to the sheer amount of both Challenges & Trophies. I appreciate your dedication as always Jirard!
Shoutout to everyone who still plays this game
ty
So like 2 people?
Sup. Take care
I used to play this on the bus to school with a friend forever ago, really great times with this game for real!
The music choices for this video is top tier
My best friend and I played the hell out of Smash for 3DS. We were able to bring our 3DS's to school and play Smash Run and customizing our characters' stats and moves were a breath of fresh air.
I loved the custom moves it was honestly a ton of fun
+1 ... was a great way to keep the game interesting. I miss it.
Ultimate.
Forgetting? Smash 4 had some of the hypest reveals dlc and the main reason i bought the wiiu besides more fun game's were coming to the wiiu
Ah Smash 4. I’ll never forget seeing someone try to enter their Marth amiibo, aptly named Roy in a tournament I was at and it was beating actual contestants in friendlies. Made for a hilarious memory
My kids still play this on occasion: they like the contrast with Ultimate, and the bright colors.
Ok not gonna lie, was NOT expecting this on my Saturday morning. It looks so slow, Jesus.
How is it Saturday morning for you? If you’re in another time zone, then it would be Sunday morning

This one was one heck of a journey on Twitch for you haha. Hope you're having a good time dude. Can't wait for that 400!
Also SB Wii U's online was FAR more enjoyable than Ultimate's.
There the exact same people think it's different only cause ultimates faster and requires faster inputs
Really? I had a hard time with both, but ultimate was very much preferred
Yes because you can use different characters with the same player
Nah, Wii U's online is better. They had it right with "For Fun" and "For Glory". Nothing is more annoying than wanting a 1v1 on FD and getting a 4 player free-for-all with items.
Also in Smash 4 you can fight CPU's with a friend online! Try doing that in Smash Ultimate.
@@Ansemthewise59 never happened to me since the first time i got the game. It should be better though
bayonetta 2 was what pushed me to finally get a wii u.
smash 4 3ds and smash 4 wii u have completely different trophies and music selection. the 3ds version has more music and trophies from handheld games and smash 4 has more music and trophies from console games.
i miss trophies especially the final smash trophies for beating all star mode.
I played this game to death the until I got a switch this Christmas.
Same. Even when I did get a switch I still played it until I got ultimate
i always play this game
i don't have a switch
I didn't forget this game... at least, I hope I won't forget this game...
The events in Smash 4 are better than Smash Ultimate’s Spirits.
He says when was the last time you thought of smash 4. Me I legit talked about it yesterday because of how all wii U games are basically on switch and there is literally no reason to buy a wii u but smash 4
There are reasons
Wind Waker HD for now...
xenoblade chronicles x is the only reason i have one
Honestly, I still use my Wii U to play a lot of Nintendo’s classic titles since Nintendo didn’t just drop the ball with releasing classic titles on Switch, they buried that ball 6 feet under. I’ve recently been playing a lot of Earthbound on it.
16:40 YESSSS! Bring back the individualised target levels. Those levels were my obsession back in 2000, took my so long to figure out each target for link, but that retrospectively was a great training experience!
First 10 seconds: Coughing at dust blown off old console. And I laughed for 5 minutes because that happens all the time when I bring out the Wii U.
Friendly reminder that the Wii U actually had some great games (games that tons have applauded when ported to switch 👀)
Yeah, but it's more probably because very few people had the chance to enjoy those games, so it was reasonable to have them ported to Switch
You're the first person I've seen praising for Wii U's Classic Mode. While I prefer Ultimate's version where each character gets a tailor-made route, I also enjoyed the freedom and surprise elements present here.
The one thing I miss the most are custom moves. I understand implementing them again would've been unfeasible because of Ultimate's roster size, but changing moves to allow for better recovery, more stage control, better kill power etc. depending on your preference was honestly pretty cool and I hope we'll see it return later in the series in an even better form (moves unlocked from the start, giving each character completely different moves instead of just variations).
ive been obsessed with mega man my whole life and when i saw the smash reveal i literally screamed so loud my mom grounded me
I prefer X, if it was zero at least i would’ve screamed too
I'd have grounded you too.
Why would she ground you for that? That's dumb.
Let's be honest smash tour was a lot better than 80% of people thought
Yeah, so fun with friends
I really miss the trophy room. After years and years I finally completed the room. It was the most satisfying thing I’ve ever done.
I was thinking of smash 4 the other day. How I almost mastered the entire roster but now barely play half in Ultimate.
Using the Wii U menu as a means for transitions is such a cool idea :O Man how am I already so nostalgic for that lol
Jirard: When was the last time you thought about smash 4
Me: As a Cloud main, I think about smash 4 an unhealthy amount.
The match making is better and the lag is just as bad, but the online is free, so it gets a pass
i replayed smash 4. all i can say is that just like alpharad, i tried to do ultimate thing because it was what i was familiar with
Finally A POPULAR RUclipsr sees the gem in SSB4. I still play it today since I haven't a Switch yet XD
Smash 4 was one of the best games made by nintendo, the game shaped me as a person and it’s a game I’ll never forget
yes yes yes
a video w more opinions
i enjoy your content for the opinions you share along the way, more than the completion process
Every person who makes a wiiu video starts off with a blowing away dust joke
Not really forgotten as much as overshadowed. Between the technically impressive 3DS release, with modes like Smash Run and having better overall stages, and the absolutely massive Ultimate including every character, almost every stage, thousands of songs, and further polishing the gameplay, it's easily overlooked. Especially on Nintendo's worst selling home console
I would say it's a bit of both
Truth is that this game got pulled too far into the scrutiny that is the competitive smash community.
I beg your pardon?
Facts, toxic competitive mindsets have tarnished this and Brawl’s name
@@Grassdewd Ohhh that's what he means!
Kinda true then, I think the only clear identity was been the best online smash thanks to For glory.
The problem is, in order to play online, you need people to play too, and since Ult have pretty much has all the popularity well......his only identity now it can't be used, or as big as it used to.
As for Brawl, maybe it is considered the black sheep competitively, but at least has the subspace.
The thing I miss most are the little blurbs you get with the trophies. I loved going through them and learning a little bit about the characters and what game they were from. And spirits have absolutely none of that.
I would say that untill you remember rage and Bayonetta.
That Wii U startup intro was so nostalgic for me. I remember playing the first Splatoon and Smash 4 so much 🔥
This one was good, but I found myself playing the 3DS version more often because of Smash Run. My wifi was terrible too, so I never got to play online.
I forgot I bought a Wii U just for smash, this video reminded me
It's ironic that he likes the classic mode when everyone hates it.
The one thing I hate about Classic Mode is the ridiculously difficult Master Core at max difficulty. It's impossible. I still haven't beaten it and gotten that achievement..
I liked the classic mode in smash 4 (wii u) too to be honest
Classic mode was super fun. Loved the challenge, 9.0 was so hard
Smash 4, AKA the one where people started complaining about “too many Fire Emblem characters.”
I blame Corrin
which then evolved into Ultimate as "Too many anime swordspeople"
I think that the Schafrillas Productions video explains well
It's even worse when many of those people complaining don't play fire emblem
I think some of the customisable moves were a really good idea. I loved the references in each moveset and that is what I remember smash 4 for.
I was literally playing sm4sh as you released this.
*"When was the last time you even thought about Smash 4?"*
uhhh yesterdayyyy
I got a new 3ds last weekend to relive some nostalgia and playing smash 4 for the first time since ultimate released just hit different
