It's been an insane journey, with hitting 1,000,000 subs and now a new milestone of 300 games. Time to kick off with new assets, formats, and much more to show you guys this year. Smash Bros Ultimate is unbelievable. With the amount of content, music, and extras stuffed into this game, the only bad thing I can really comment on is the online lag. But in order to COMPLETE this fighting game, I'm going to have to play through the campaign at least twice, and get those instant-win hammers along the way. This game is huge, but I love me a good challenge. I didn't grow this beard. I EARNED IT!

Love how this channel has always tried different things. New layouts, intros, the overall structure, its always changing. Which is odd right? A channel of this size you would think keeping things how they have always been would work just fine and keep people happy. And while I do think that would be the case, the effort that goes into these various "seasons" to differentiate them from the others is very noticeable and I think that's a big reason why the channel has made such great progress and growth. Congrats and here's to another 300, cheers.

To be fair, I’m sure we're all willing to agree Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port despite adding Toadette and her new powerup (which by itself acts as a whole new character)

Because it is a game that could have been made by copy and pasting the wii u game to switch and then adding extra stuff.

I say this as a _very_ long-time fan, probably since year one, this is probably the single best Completionist episode I've seen. Excellent pacing, some of Jirard's best voicework, this is the most engaged I've been in a Completionist video since probably the FFVII video series. Keep this format up, I love feeling like one of my top inspirations is better than ever!
Going to have to disagree on that one, waiting almost six minutes for any actual completionism is just to long a wait for the content I clicked on the video to watch.

I'm not a huge Smash guy at all, but that was worth a shot! (Hell, I was getting slammed by Smash fans for my video on Sony's Smash competitor just last week!)
I'm speaking as somebody who watches these videos as a video creator myself, and to me the game doesn't matter _nearly_ as much as the passion that goes into the work. I don't care for FFVII one bit either, but again, Jirard's passion shows in the delivery and the team goes all-out when writing and pacing videos when there's that level of investment. To each their own of course, but I haven't felt this actively engaged in a Completionist video in years, even though I watch every one.

Brawl: Amazing adventure mode, tons of fun extra modes, more characters and better-er graphics. With some gameplay tweaks and an online mode, we know it's a sequel!
Wii U: Even better graphics, more characters (some cut), a new form of event mode, DLC, and an awesome final boss in classic mode. It's a sequel.
3DS: The only one I'd say is a port. Smash run is great tho.
Ultimate: LITERALLY EVERYTHING FROM EVERY GAME IN THE SERIES PLUS A NEW BATTLE MECHANIC FOR AN ENTIRE SECTION OF THE GAME.
Totally a port. Definitely doesn't fit every criteria imaginable for sequel.

Your argument doesn't make any sense. Ultimate adds new characters, has better gameplay, and better graphics than Wii U, yet you say it's a port of that game, even though those were the reasons you said Melee was a sequel to 64.
HOW is this not smash 5? Almost every character has its moveset reworked entirely, this game has a single-player mode, spirits are something new to the franchise, classic mode has been reworked, I could go on...
Maybe he said it was a port once and now he cannot admit he is wrong. He's the kind of guy that makes a half hour video essay about how wrong he is on a topic trying to make it sound ok
Spirits are Stickers from Brawl except with stat boosts and such.

so even though they don't need changes, they are changed and have new animations. That's how a new game is made. In fact that's how sequels worked not so long ago. Is sonic advance 2 a port of 1? Is advance 3 a port of 1 and 2? The what about Kirby squeak squad? Is it a port of amazing mirror?

Yeah. They reworked almost everything. The combat is far faster, and there are fundamentally different mechanics, than Smash 5. The aesthetics are definitely closest to Smash 4 Wii U, and its fighting style (despite being faster), is most similar to Smash 4. Hence why some people figured it was a port.
But it's not a port. It's definitely Smash 5.

@@ShiNijuuAKL The change between games is pretty huge from a gameplay standpoint. Graphically, they look similar, but that really is all the two games have in common. Almost every part of the game has been reworked and improved. If this isn't a new game, I don't know what is.
@@benullrich6075 it is not, it feels 95% the same as Smash 4. There are like 3 new mechanics, that's all, basically a patch. New engine? wind waker wii u uses a new engine, is a new game? NO. I will give you that is a "new game" just because of the new characters and the Spirits mode (which is a piece of shit compared to the story mode from Brawl)

Great video, but Ultimate is totally Smash 5. Besides the graphical/lighting overhaul and, most importantly, the new physics and gameplay mechanics, this game is clearly a new installment, and not really the same as what Ultra Street Fighter IV is. I do wish there was more brand new stages though

Absolutely. I was honestly left pretty shocked when he at least implied that the game wasn't a full sequel at that point in the video. I believe, and such is the general consensus, that Ultimate is 100% not just a comprehensive upgrade, but a new game that can be considered its own installment in the Smash series that is distinct from the rest. I don't need to echo what you and so many others have already said regarding why this is, but it irritates me every time I hear this notion brought up that Ultimate is not a full sequel.

But Smash Ultimate is Smash 5, Jirard. Also nobody was wondering where Smash 5 was since...Smash 4 had so recently come out. If anything this surprised people by coming out sooner than expected. Yeah some asked about porting Smash 4 over as a way to tide us over but it wasn't some long-lost game.
The thing is, people were expecting a port like how MK8 was ported, as opposed to a new game outright.
This is Smash 5, 100%. Nintendo said it’s a sequel and all evidence points to it being a sequel.

I agree. This style works a lot better without the section breaks. (Though I hope there'll still be spoiler warnings for endings.) And honestly, I was getting tired of the jokes where the punchline is over-explaining it afterwards for an uncomfortable amount of time.

I don't want to be negative, but I want to be honest. I disagree. I do not like the new writing style. It may grow on me, but this first episode didn't sell it to me. Still look forward to future episodes episodes. As for why? I was a fan of the jokes and the road map styled videos with bullet points. This felt more like an essay of completing the game.

Your port point is entirely wrong. This is most definitely smash 5 because not only did characters get added as well as a new story mode, but there were tons of mechanics that changed, making it far superior to smash 4

Jory Johnson well....put it like this....1 has a bunch of cutscenes that covey a story with the characters interacting with each other, while going through a level by level structure, the other has minimal story stuff, but has a humongous open world that you can explore, with spirits and bosses you fight at your own pace, whilst using spirts you gain from battles to create a team that boosts your fighter for other battles. Both are different, and people are gonna have preferences. I personally like both (even though i haven’t you played Brawl, i enjoy the cutscenes) People might even like World of light more because of the strategy that comes with making spirt teams for battles, maybe others will like Subspace more because of the character interaction and adventure. World of light isn’t your cup of tea? Alright then, but just because YOU dislike it doesn’t mean it’s automatically awful man. Not everyone is gonna like it dislike the same thing.

Good video. But man, Smash Ultimate isn't a port. It's not an upgrade. It's not Smash 4.5. It's a brand new game. A port doesn't rework the entire fighting system (every single character has been changed from Smash 4), use an entirely different engine that results in the game being built form the ground up, completely change the collectibles, add this much new content, and an entire single player campaign on top of it all.
Sorry man, it's Smash 5 (or 6, if you count the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash 4 as separate games).
Every single character has been changed is not a good measurement. First of all, they didn't change that much. Then, if you go thru the patches in smash 4, you will notice that a lot of characters were changed with the time. We still called that game smash 4.

This is the best format the show has taken yet. I very much appreciate the little individual breakdowns you did of each completion stat at the end. Instead of just listing the stats of how many things you collected or how many times you died and how much time it took, you actually explained a little of how you felt doing all that work in each category. That adds a lot to that segment and the overall final feeling you're left with at the end of the video. This video flowed well and felt good.
I keep on forgetting how much Jirard loved the Boondocks, hopefully we'll get Uncle Ruckus as a spirit eventually

The mechanics were changed soooo much that this would DEFINITELY be called Smash 5 and not 4.5 or something like you implied. Lest not forget we got Melee 2 years after 64. The similar art style and system power is fooling people into having the port mindset
@Bit Bite Chomp DK, Link, Peach, ICs, Zelda, Sheik, Pichu, Falco, Fox, YLink, Ganondorf, ZSS, Snake, Ike, Pokemon Trainer, TLink, Wolf, Wii Fit? I mean literally *all* of the characters have a lot of redone animations as well.

"no new features or technological enchancements" yeah no. The Engine was entirely written from scratch, the only thing they reused were the models on some characters. Mechanics wise pretty much everything changed as well.
They reused Snake's codec calls from brawl
If you read some tweets and interviews from the team it sounds like the graphics were rewritten but the core logic was ported over.

Look at how much it's updated. The roster. The music. The singleplayer. The other modes. There is much more here than a simple port could ever dream of.
One thing is that near the beginning it seems like your trying to make this seem like it's not a new game. This is a new game. This is smash 5. This is not smash 4.5 this is smash 5.
The word ultimate is always used for enhanced ports
No one is claiming it's Smash 4.5. The point is whether it's considered a new entry entirely, or a special side entry meant as a compilation/celebration, like Monster Hunter Generations.

@@wakethedrake4904 Generations is very much more of a celebratory thing with how many classic villages they use, along with lots of classic returning monsters. Also pretty much an end of an era, with newer games very likely to follow the MH World format (The one being developed for switch I'd guess is very likely to be a spinoff)

@@marcushoglund5893 Songs can be obtained through the World of Light, Challenge Board and the shop in the vault, make sure that you opened every chest in World of Light, completed the entire Challenge Board (although music is hidden in only certain challenges, but you can easily obtain hammers) and that the shop doesn't sell music anymore. That way, you've gotten every song the game offers thus far (new tracks will come as DLC).

I have to say that I have waited and waited time and time again. Saying to myself. "Today is the day I'm going to load up SBU." But then I just switch to yet another Switch game. Now because of this video. I am going to dive deep into the Smash-y goodness and start my Journey/World of Light.
Yeah the sheer size of it is intimidating, but the game can be played as much as you like, fights are quick so the pressure is low.
This is Smash 5, it is not an upgrade. They are totally different games that play completely different.

They are actually new assets.... besides if reusing assets are your only argument then that would mean Majora's Mask is just an "upgrade" of Ocarina of Time. Same engine, same mechanics, and reused assets yet no one will say Majora is just an Upgrade. SSBU has way more differances. SSBU is not an Upgrade, it is a sequel. Saying anything else is an insult to the creators.

@@JohnDylan0506 Majora's Mask cant' be an upgrade of Ocarina of Time because it doesn't take everything OoT had and build upon it. You're in a completely different world doing a completely different adventure. If Majora's Mask also included the Ocarina of Time campaign onto it then it could very well be considered an upgrade to Ocarina of Time.

Personally, I considering completing Ultimate as getting every song, mii clothing, spirits, and completing all challenges. But it makes sense to complete all classic modes in single-player and co-op and century smash with every character... I just didn’t want to suffer as much as Jirard!

why would this not be a sequel? it's got a far different gameplay system, being both faster and smoother, with new AT. it's got a brand new story, a bunch of new characters, and a slightly different art style. the only true similarities are the many moves have stayed the same. even then, so much has changed, like most of doc's moveset. it's a smash game. this is more of a sequel than brawl to sm4sh

@@TheGloriousLobsterEmperor Spirits is just a reworked trophy system, but I can respect the crazy amount of work into it, but I can't find much enjoyment in it. World of light is just an over-hyped subspace emissary. What killed it for me was the loss of co-op, making it completely boring when you realize you have to do over 600 battles of practically the same thing alone, minus those random missions that are insanely hard and the bosses.

How in the world do you not consider this smash 5? It is so obvious that games like ultra sf4 are an upgraded version because it reuses a lot of the assets and the gameplay stays largely the same with a few tweaks. Sf5 is clearly a sequel as it changes the system, all new assets, etc. How is smash ultimate in any way like that? What did you want from it?

I agree. I have no idea how people still see this as an updated port. The only argument I can see is that the overall engine is very similar. But even the gameplay feels different enough from smash 4 to me

It's not a particularly hard Smash game to complete. I nearly finished the entire thing within my first week. Compared to previous titles it's a cake walk.

@@FreakinSweet1987 Agreed, it's by far the easiest Smash game to 100% imo. Mostly due to Classic being super short, and All Star being absent. Even the challenges are really quite easy.

for those of you unaware, this game undoubtedly has enough new mechanics to be considered “smash 5”
its a new entry that ditches old mechanics and picks up new ones, and if you have any background in smash, you know full well that it doesnt feel like smash 4 at all
if you dont believe me, believe the record count of melee players that enjoy the game, and the absurd amount of smash 4 players that arent feeling this game at all
the hitstun is very different, the movement is very different, and the favored mechanics are very different (shield grabs are terrible, way more shield stun, no bury kb subtraction [granted it didnt turn out to be /that/ bigof a deal], etc)
basically this is a new game, it meets every qualifier to be a new game, and this is a very anal comment in an awful comment section, the end.
This is definitely not an enhanced port of Smash 4. There are so many new mechanics and the game doesn’t even play the same as Smash 4. This game is a whole new one. Just because they added “Ultimate” as a sub title, doesn’t mean it was ported like MK8 Deluxe was.

This video needs an update, since there's been a lot of new updates for this game. When an updated video i don't know, especially since, at the time of this comment, the 5th DLC character hasn't been revealed, let alone released to the public.
And now we're on DLC Character 10/12. Crazy.
I will never. Ever. Ever forget the first week I got smash ultimate. I was having daily rehearsals for a choir show, and I played non-stop. Me and all the other kids who had the game would compete for who could get each character first. And that. Collecting each character (from crazy tough npcs) was just too god damn fun
