    Maybe running Ubuntu touch on another compatible device with higher specs and doing some googling about the last error will give you a better experience.

      Either the hardware on the Pinephone Pro is under-powered or the drivers are under-cooked. The opengl implementation is so rudimentary, you need to run Blender with software rendering.... so I wouldn't be surprised if that is what's happening.
      Someone on a bug report for Waydroid assumed it was probably the specs on the phone. So it might be a combination.
      In any case, if you get a fully supported device for Ubuntu Touch, the experience including Waydroid is probably going to be much much better.

    Tip on UT's terminal, you can actually swipe with one finger to simulate arrow keys. One tap will simulate Tab for autocomplete. 2 finger swipe to scroll. These were not mentioned anywhere in the app so it's very missable 😄
    As for Waydroid, separate window per app has always been very buggy in UT. It's better to always use the full UI mode.
    Waydroid Helper is a nice tool for installing and setting up Waydroid. Not sure how well it'll work on the Pinephone but maybe worth trying it out from scratch.
    Waydroid is very much usable on other devices. I have a video on Pixels 3a where I even played heavy games 😄

      Thank you for the insights! I was getting a feel for things as I was going... realizing how much I don't know yet.

    Respect for going through all that for this video, unlucky that it didn't work out. Hope your time on UT gets better from here!

    I have POCO X3 NFC that supports UT great and PMOS(No camera, gps). I tried UT but gestures are bad, UI is a bit laggy, there is small amount of apps, Libertine didn't work, small control over Camera and etc and you cannot install another DE like in PMOS or any other regular GNU/Linux distro.
    PostmarketOS didn't normally boot when I tried to netboot it and installed on SD Card, I got "ERROR boot partition not found" both of the times. I tried dualbooting that way flashing kernel to recovery.
    There is edk2 and u-boot abandoned port that do not support SD Card.
    Dualbooting using edk2 is possible but you have to repartition and there is no guide and I do not want to lose any data of Android I currently use.
    No I daily drive CrDroid with MicroG and KernelSU. I do Linux things in Termux but sometimes Termux is not enough.

    Ooh, you have the Pinephone Pro... I need to upgrade, but my standard Pinephone running Mobian still gets the job done.
    I've considered polluting it by getting it to run Android apps but... nah.
    Of course, developing for Android on it could be interesting...

      I've heard the regular Pinephone is more mature and usable than the Pro from a friend. I haven't tried it myself... but I'm curious.

      @@bitterepic I've heard similar... not surprising, really. I may eventually get a pro, but I love my current pinephone.

    You should use ADB -e instead of shell.

    Question: do games like Pokemon Go or MHnow run into problems with this? Does it trigger some anticheat?

    • @bitterepic
      @bitterepic  Месяц назад

      I assume it would be fine, because it is a full android stack. However, I'm not sure the GPS actually works so you probably wouldn't be able to play pokemon go.
      I believe Pokemon Go primarily tries to catch people if they are warping to different location instead of checking the software stack.

      nearly all android phones use modified kernel versions, android itself barely counts as linux, and android apps are APKs not binaries, you need a java vm with android apis to run them

    • @techofebd
      @techofebd Месяц назад

      Indeed but only the tailored kernel layer including Google ToS for Android and most of the apps are proprietary or freeware or even FOSS.

    • @awuuwa
      @awuuwa Месяц назад

      It uses a modified version of Linux as it's kernel. No operating system *is* Linux, since a kernel is a component of an operating system. Android is a complete operating system which runs with Linux.

      About as much so as a Boeing 787 is a Rolls Royce because it has an RR engine. You wouldn't say you've rode in a Rolls Royce because you've flown a plane, and you wouldn't say you're a Linux user because you have an Android phone.

      @@jamiedavinci1328 this is a really good comparison! I'm going to use that next time I have to explain "but it's linux"

  • @awuuwa
    @awuuwa Месяц назад +1

    You should call the OS on the phone "GNU+Linux" for the sake of clarity since Android itself already uses Linux.

  • @stavros3006

    Or you could just get an Android phone, install a de-Googled ROM on it and throw that piece of crap Ubuntu Touch where it belongs, to the trash.

    • @bitterepic
      @bitterepic  21 день назад

      The funny thing is, there are a ton of in-betweens for the extremes. You can install Linux on your degoogled phone. You can install android on your Linux phone. You can get an expensive librephone where all of the parts are made in the US, or you can buy a generic cheap pixel to install Linux on. Choose your poison.
