In the early 2000s (2004?) I bought this mutant Asian multi-region player off Amazon for £25. This beast had every conceivable AV output for the time (Not HDMI of course too early for that) so the back of it was just a maze of obscure I/O. The build was sort of reminiscent of a VHS player from the 1970s, except of course with a disc tray. It was thanks to this monster that I got to see the Dead Zone TV Series and The Shield in the days when the UK didn't get DVD releases of these shows. I still own it and I believe it would work if I turned it on. It was one of the best purchases of my life. Where multi-region scenarios exist these players are amazing. (Now I digitise everything and put my files on my Plex server, data doesn't care about region).

The UK really did get boned with such long delays on certain dvd releases.
I see a lot of folks using Plex as an option now. Not something I’ve dipped my toes into yet. Although I do use a lot of digital content

@@PhillwithadoubleL I happen to be a systems developer so messing about with personal media servers was a no brainer for me, and it is totally worth it once you get over the set-up hell. I have 6TB of storage and the rosy glow of knowing that I have digital back ups of all my discs. Next upgrade for me will be to super expand my storage and get a couple of 10 or even 20TB drives to store media on. Those HD files take up a lot of room. (DVD files though are relatively tiny)

I'm UK based and I got a region free player to get the best versions of movies. Lionsgate especially often has sole rights to certain superior versions, like their version of Terminator 2 in 2015 and The English Patient in 2012. I also plan on getting the Lionsgate versions of Heavenly Creatures and Memento, both of which are region A locked. Not to mention all the Criterion releases, too, like Pan's Labyrinth

I’ve a multi region player for years now, great it just gives me so much more choice I have to be honest I import many more US releases than buy UK ones. If you like Criterion the UK choice is much poorer than US I buy all New Criterion releases hence my channel name, I was also able to watch the bluray of The Holdovers before it even released in UK cinemas. My favs are scream and shout factory, US Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome and I have all the Kino 4ks but the Blu-rays are region A so you need multi region to watch the features.

Absolutely agree. I only have 1 multi region player but that’s enough for what I need.
Love the flexibility of being able to order from anywhere in the world and not worry about region coding.
My main draw is usually the extras but there are still loads of titles overseas that we’re just not seeing locally.
Silence of the Lambs for example. US has had both a nice criterion release and now the 4k from Kino, no sign of anything beyond the basic Blu ray in the UK.

I did think about getting a multi region Blu ray player. However, a lot of releases are region free. 4K are region free too.
There are some US releases I want, but I’ll wait till we get a 4K release or it gets released in a European country and import it.
I’d also be worried about selling on Region A or C Blu rays, as not many people would want them. You also couldn’t trade them in to CEX and similar places. It would probably have to be on eBay or something.

If I’ve sold any Region A then it’s had to be eBay to be able to shift them. There is an interest there for buyers of region A but it’s only normally for the more boutique labels like scream factory or criterion.

I've been thinking about getting a region free blu-ray player for a long time. I've had a RF DVD player for years but have barely used it, since I rarely buy DVDs anymore. Wow! I didn't even know that VHS had NTSC & PAL versions. 😲 Here in the US, I see a lot of movies get blu-ray releases in the UK & Australia that don't get a release here. There are some titles that go OOP & sell for an arm & a leg on eBay. I go to Amazon UK & find out there's an international version for a reasonable price. Maybe going RF is another excuse for me to collect more movies. 🤷🏼😎

Region free gives you options at least. Sure, it can be costly to import but for me. Sometimes having that title from overseas that’s not available locally has been well worth it.
Another option if it works better cost wise is to import a player from the region you want, sometimes works out cheaper than a multi region player but then it means having another box under your tv.

  • @Wildmutationblu

I have bought many, many region A blu-rays, mainly Criterion including The Complete Films of Agnès Varda and Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema. I was under the impression that all 4k players could play any region blu ray and put off unboxing my 4k player for many years as I was hoping to move to a nice home. It looks like that's vener going to hapen so I unblosed my LG 4k player on Christmas day. It is only multi region for DVD's!!! I can play any region on my computer as it has a BD drive and I've attached it to my 65" 4K tv so it's not all bad. Might buy one if I found some closerchome.
I do have couple regionfree dvd-players. Used to order many times movies and series from USA and Canada. Back then shipping costs were reasonable and you could order 30$ worth of stuff without custon fees. Today, shipping is way too expensive, if stores are even willing to ship stuff over seas. And goverment🇫🇮 desited to remove that taxfree-rule about year back, so , thats for that. But, the player is good to have, incase I find some imports from freemarkets or other places like that.

I considered having a second player under the tv instead of a region free machine. looked at importing a cheap player from that region to keep costs a little lower. Just didn’t really want that extra device under the TV.
Costs of importing titles now are getting out of hand. I don’t do it as much but when there’s a specific title I love that isn’t in the uk then I’ll pay. The Abyss will likely be one of them this year

I've been watching my 4k discs from an Xbox (very noisy device) but since I also decided to ditch Sky for good this year, I would like to replace their box with a 4k player and I'm leaning towards Panasonic. I know there are at least 2 companies in the UK (one that you mentioned and another called TPS I think) that mod brand new players and sell them on Amazon for like £50 more which is nothing if you're a collector importing expensive editions from abroad or simply like watching independent international movies. This only applies to blurays though cuz all 4k discs are region free now but I want to watch some smaller titles that might never get a 4k release like Palmetto recently released only on bluray and only in the US. Thank you for your advice and I will certainly look up that magic company.

Absolutely agree, still many many titles that are region locked and Blu ray only. It gives that nice flexibility. Also, the 4k is region free but when they put the extras on the Blu ray and not the 4k discs, if you’re not regional free then you could be locked out of that content. Obviously going region free is at a cost but just consider if it’s worth it to you.

I only have 3 Uk Bluray 's and 3 UK DVD's in my collection with Dutch subs that i only have because lucky to found it here. The 3 Bluray's that i have: Doctor Zhivago 2 disc BD from UK including not only include same BD disc as Dutch BD 1 disc release but also including earlier used bonus disc from very out of print 2 disc DVD. Pacific Rim 2 disc UK including missing bonus disc BD where i bought for in firstplace, but also include slipcover. I already own Dutch 2 disc 3D release. Due Date UK 2 disc set (BD with Dutch subs and dvd with English subs only) i bought for BD and only because it was first and only 5,00 euro. Igby Goes Down and Dick (1999) on DVD also because there be cheap and spot it before Dutch release and release from last turn out that time it be other way around UK this time use our Dutch/German disc for the English subs on the movie who also include Dutch/German and lot of other subs but only include Dutch and German on the extra's. Black Hawk Down 3 disc DVD,for second bonus disc with all include Dutch subs on movie (and English and Hindi) and extra's include commentary on disc 1. No English subs on disc 2&3 (Dutch, French, Italian & Spanish subs only), commentary (Dutch subs only). 2 Disc SE that be avaible here is not bad.
There stil some movie who get wide of UK release with Dutch subs but don't Dutch release: Speed 2 (Wide), Hitchcock the movie (Wide) and Hitchcock Volume 2 (UK in digipack, Volume 1 get release but also that one UK Is better because of digipack.) Whyle there is stil not BD release of it finaly The Color purple get BD in 2 disc 4K/BD Combo steelbook with earlier Bluray from UK with Dutch subs, of course price is thing. But with some other releases (Casablanca), warner making big mistake and including earlier USA BD with les subs whyle Europ version include same subs and much other subs include Dutch (Univeral did same with Hitchcock boxset V3 not avaible in my country where only movie get Dutch subs because America get same disc UK before). Some others are only 4K disc only because there not exist earlier BD with Dutch subs.
Avatar 2 not get Dutch 3D release in The Netherlands, stil hope to find German steelbook some day.
