    Whats interesting is that Cell actually got distracted by Goku's presence. He legit put his ultimate goal for perfection aside and wanted to fight Goku instead. The cells of the saiyans pretty much influenced his decisions too.
    But still shows how godly Goku's representation is

      David Gonzales Yet still people will defend that dub and call Kai the bad one. Nostalgia is blinding old dub purist. They can't see past their childhood version. With their mindset you can't ever like new things. As it wasn't apart of their childhood. They don't care Kai is Dragon Ball they seemingly wanted it to be a carbon copy of the original dub. Even then they would bash Kai for not having a difference to warrant their time. You just can't win with those people of the fandom.

    • @montefisto
      @montefisto 8 лет назад +340

      +Naomi Washinton Agreed. It just sucks that each version of DBZ has its weaknesses. Kai would be amazing with Bruce Falconer, a Gohan voice actor that doesn't sound crazy high-pitched, and had all the blood in it. It sucks that we can't have the best of both worlds.

    Heres how i believe it could be done, if we were to have a version that would satisfy almost everyone!
    Animation: Kai wins this one, the modernized version is just to superior.
    Voices Actors: The Cast of Kai is better, however i would have Colleen Clickenbeard voice Gohan as little kid, THEN! I would have Stephanie Nadolny voice him when he's pre teen. That way Gohan will have an apropiate voice for a little kid and sound like a total badass when he turns SSJ 2.
    Dub: The old version sounds more natural and there are a lot of lines that i really miss... However the old version also contains lines that are (lets face it) pretty dumb, corny and senseless. Plus in terms of voice acting, the Kai dub is surperior.
    Music: Everyone wins!

    - Frieza Saga: Yamamoto score
    - Cell Saga: Faulconer score

    Falcouner's soundtrack is much, much more exciting, tense, and memorable because of its uniqueness. You have characters with otherworldly powers and abilties, aliens, cyborgs, genetic abominations and psychotic infantile demons. All with the capacity to destroy planets, conquer the galaxy, shape the universe. The techno and light rock creates a sense of dread and foreboding in the quiet moments, power and excitement in the battles. Goku's theme when he goes SSJ conveys rage, surging power, and transformation.
    The classical Japanese soundtrack is just...generic. You could place it to any animation or movie and get the same effect. It's not taking advantage of the setting and characters. It's not conveying Dragonball Z's uniqueness. It's orchestral woodwinds and brass. I'd even going so far as to say it's outdated for the show it's put to. It would better fit something from the sixties or even fifties. It takes no risks, and makes no effort to be recognizable. Some tracks fit sadder scenes better than Falcouner, but that's about it. From Dragonball through DBZ the Japanese soundtrack feels stock and recycled. Terribly recycled as certain battle tunes feel utterly indistinguishable from Kid Goku fighting King Piccolo to SSJ Goku fighting Frieza. Faulconer is unmistakable. Even if it isn't the best in some places, when it shines it really shines. Vegeta's theme, Gohan Angers, Pikkon theme, SSJ3 theme. These all signify iconic moments of the franchise. With the Japanese soundtrack all these moments are scored roughly the same with little to make the scenes stand out. That's where it fails the most.

      My issue with the Falcouner track. It never fucking turned off. Literally every second of the show had music playing when silence would've been better. It's not like Kai doesn't have rock music, but only in short bursts so it doesn't get old.
      Example, the fight between Cell and Trunks is fucking badass in Kai.

      Tiberius Kirk I get your point and I can agree on most of what you said (even though I do like the Japanese Soundtracks more), but as I said elsewhere, Faulconers Music (as functional as it is most of the time) doesnt mesh well with Emotional Moments like Vegetas Death(s) or Gokus sacrifice. Faulconers Music for these Scenes just sounded too cold and distanced for my taste.

    • @Donatello97
      @Donatello97 9 лет назад +30

      Tiberius Kirk A lot of people always tend to use the word 'techno rock' to describe the US soundtrack of DBZ, which is a little annoying. Faulconer productions uses synthesizers as their main tool which I absolutely love, especially for old school horror movies. they're a VERY powerful tool at creating emotion, atmosphere, driving a scene and being incredibly memorable.
      Anyways, no brainer...Kai's voice acting eclipses Z's in this scene. But that's not always the case. I find a lot of Z's dialogue to be larger than life, more memorable and to the point, where as kai's can often be a little overexplanitory, as if characters are relishing every single word they say as if they're reading from a script. 'Acting' is good but they don't feel like real people in kai in comparison to how they do in Z IMO.
      Also, the original JAP soundtrack is laughably bad here, corny and goofy. Faulconer wins again.

    • @Keurgui1
      @Keurgui1 9 лет назад +20

      ***** Falconer doesn't convey any emotion or atmosphere it's just an "in your face" soundtrack that just manages to get people's attention
      And the replacement music in kai pales in comparison to yamamoto
      And Z's dialogue means nothing, just hammy and corny speeches, that do nothing to plot or characterization, and I'd love to find out how that script sounds at all "real" to you
      Kai's actually characterizes them and isn't as forced as Z's.

    Although I'm a original version die hard, I actually have to praise the Dragonball Z Kai English dubbed version for doing justice to the original dialog. I know the original dialogue almost at heart so I know it's pretty accurate especially compared to the old English dub by Funimation. So yeah, the new dub is for teens and up, while the old one is for kids.

      Which one is the original dialogue? Funimation right? I love the Kai dub too. The Funimation dub does seem like they speak slower as if kids were watching, but I hate the cuts that are in Kai. The original dialogue and most accurate one is located in the Japanese version, being an anime, of course that's where the original version is. Even Funimation admitted that this Kai dub is a lot more accurate compared to their first dub of Dragon Ball. There are many dub comparison videos out there. HAhaha Ooohh Kayyy Mr. mature.
      If anything, kids will never watch the old one because... why would they? They would have to buy DVDs or find videos elsewhere for a version that is... Older.
      While the 'New' version is on NICKELODEON (originally for US).
      But yes. I too praise them for adhering to stricter standards of translation, to do the original script justice here in the states. And that is awesome you know the dialogue by heart! Seriously.
      Though with that said, I somehow prefer the 'Old' version better. Maybe it is nostalgia, or maybe I really do feel more emotion and gritty tension from the original... Who knows?

      ***** Agree 100%. Whenever there's a discussion about Z vs. Kai, the "censored" version of Kai always gets brought up. Most people ignore the fact that there is an uncut version. The voice acting in Kai is superb as most of the voice actors have gained a lot of experience over the years since the original. For example that clip of Cell in the original sounds absolutely horrible but in Kai he's a lot more intimidating. I think people are letting nostalgia influence their decision too much.

  • @the-aspiring-creator4249
    @the-aspiring-creator4249 Год назад +18

    The Remastered dub improves a lot on the old dub to a degree... but I honestly think it doesn't do enough to beat Kai and I think in part it comes to that air of inexperience that these voices have. Take for example Schemmel's Goku. This was clearly during the era where it seems their line of thinking was Goku's voice should always sound kinda high in pitch. This is a problem that's present with a lot of the old dub performances I'm finding, actors were clearly given the direction to just do a voice and due to their inexperience they chose to try and maintain them... at the expense of their range. Here, it sounds like Goku's confused, like this is a man that kind of doesn't know how to actually be serious. In Kai, the voice actually has a different tone, it distinctly sounds like Goku still but it actually sounds serious and it makes the threat sound that much more impactful and then when Goku senses Piccolo? It shifts into sounding like actual surprise.
    The next problem is the music which to be fair is present in both but the difference is that for Kai it's understandable to a degree because the version of Kai from this point that's legally available is the one where they replaced the original Kenji Yamamoto score with the Shunsuke Kikuchi one... and rather hastily which results in moments where the score does not match the vibe of the scene. The Faulconer one clearly had more time put into it so it naturally at least sounds like it's properly timed to the scene... but then another problem comes up, the Faulconer score... does not fit Dragon Ball. This industrial drone mixed with synth just doesn't work for this scene and while it's not an issue highlighted with this moment? There's also the problem with the score never stopping at any point to let a scene breathe.

    To be honest, while Faulconer made some banger ost's, for me some of his songs don't fit with the overall scene and feeling of it. That's maybe the editors fault for not using a proper one for some scenes, this one included, but it sounds calm but uneasy at the same time, making me think that it should've been used for someone like Piccolo for a scene when he's meditating than this one *for example* (maybe they did and can't remember because it's been a while since I've watched the OG DUB and SUB) while Kai's song kind of maintains the original score's vibe from the OG Z ( the japanese dub which I like it more, might be biased but in this case, the feeling of what these scenes tried to tell, Faulconer's just does not fit for me). The newer score has this emergency yet grand feeling of what's happening right now and a build up towards what's about to come very soon. Cell is an absolute menace, so by just staring at him while being on the run to train and save others, gives you this feeling of danger. Now that I think about it, I might've heard it during the original japanese sub, it's familiar for me at least. Yup it is, just looked it up and it's BGM-M1405. Anyways, the japanese score in general fits more within DBZ than Faulconer's for the most part imo.

      jdg20042001 Someone not killing others for different opinions! lol, I've kind of always been a little on the fence as to which I actually prefer myself. My favorite soundtrack was the Kenji Yamamoto score from the earlier Kai dub, but between Bruce Faulconer and Shunsuke Kikuchi (composer of the original DBZs score in Japanese and for Kai now too) I think nostalgia aside it kind of comes down to the age old question with soundtracks in general, ie is it better to have a soundtrack with good music or a soundtrack that's well utilized. On it's own the Faulconer track is better than Kikuchi's clearly IMO, but with the Kikuchi score the directors for the series knew precisely what they wanted to convey at a given time and they were using Kikuchi, and that shows there so it's pretty clearly utilized better.

    Honestly, I don’t know which is better. I grew up with the original dub from Cartoon Network and the CD and enjoyed very much, especially with the Faulconer music going on in the show and the acting was great too despite the dialogue being a somewhat off kilter with the manga series. But even though I love the nostalgic feeling the original gives, there is a lot in the Kai dub that corrects the mistakes beforehand. The voice acting has improved significantly. Not to mention that the dialogue in it follows the storyline better than the original. However, the soundtrack (in my opinion) does not have the same kind of feeling as it does with the original dub. To me the music is better in the original than Kai. And the visual images changes visually looks odd. not saying it’s bad, the art looks great. Just it looks odd when the pictures switch from a rough 90s look to a smoother 2010s correction, then back to the 90s. All in all, each version shares some differences and they both have features that could be improved in some aspects, but both are awesome to watch. Why? Cause it’s Dragon Ball, dammit!!

      Sorry but as someone who just finished dragon ball again, I like z more as it fits that same style. If you're going from dragon ball to Z, it flows much better. The voice acting is better I'll give you that. But the way the lines are written feel closer to the style of the original dragon ball anime. Especially since the filler is cut out from Kai. So final verdict
      Kai: better voice acting, more plot/fight based.
      Z: smoother experience if you're coming from dragon ball/similar style

At first a thought Kai was a washed down Z, from what I had heard. But once I watched it it's very good. Kai definitely has very good voice actin and diologue.
