    Overall though, I think this is the best batch of games released for the C64 since the 'glory' days.. simply amazing what has come out. It just about feels like it did back in the day with this round-up..

      With all the new retro consoles and emulator enhancements coming out, I think it really is the best time ever for the c64 retro scene! I love the fact that carts, and physical things like posters, maps, boxes and books are back now. All of that makes the gaming experience so much more deep and immersive. Getting a game and getting all that cool stuff with it was part of it all for sure and much more "worth it"!

    I grew up with a C64, and although I don't own one anymore. I am fascinated by what modern developers and fans are doing. It gives me joy to see people still creating games for old computers and consoles. also showing the true potential of these old machines.

    Seriously, thanks for the great review of Pig Quest. That's a definite purchase for me tomorrow when it becomes available. I'm a fan of puzzles and action, definitely not a fan of platformers but this looks like just the right combination. It looks amazing too - well done to the developers.

    Pig's Quest is amazing thanks to the incredible amount of pixel animation and artwork in the sprites as well as the backgrounds. There are no shortcuts to creating a game with that amount of pixel art content, and it really shines through!

      I definitely don't regret using such an old medium to tell a story, adventure games are a bit obscure these days, but on c64 adventure games were very "in". So much coming out retro c64, Evo, the mega 65, the 64 mini/ maxi, emulation on mobile. Tons of handhelds, FPGA chips.

    One piece of feedback to Axiom Fantastica dev - please, please switch to a different font in the final version. The current one is both hideous _and_ hard to read. It's especially jarring since the other parts of the game look incredible good.

    • @rhyshovey-RPH
      @rhyshovey-RPH Год назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for the feedback and the compliment! And yeah, my quest to find a weird and interesting font has made some issues for sure, I just have not decided yet what direction to take with it, I just really needed to get rid of that c64 ROM font fast. I'll clean it up if I don't replace it all together, it's definitely grungy! Trying to capitalize on the entire 8x8 without leaving that edge and bottom really creates a mess sometimes. I know what everything says already so that's a bit weird. In a game with so much text the font may not be the best place to get junky. Thanks for your interest, this game is definitely good for some laughs!

    @curiousottman Год назад +1

    A Pig Quest was too darn hard for me. Bought it, flashed it to my Kung Fu and played it for a few hours. Wish there was a save or retry without starting over. Even a cheat code would help. I’d play it to the end if I could start where I left off. That’s where this game really fails imho. If it was more like Sam’s Journey allowing you to die but continue I bet more sales would be made.

    • @RetroGamerNation

      Yes that is right, when you complete a level you unlock the next one and what is saved is the levels you have unlocked.

    very much looking forward to Pig Quest and Yeti Mountain!

    • @RetroGamerNation
      @RetroGamerNation  Год назад +2

      You make a good point about PvZ. Given that it is mainly played as a time killer, is it convenient to play it on a C64 on that basis. For me I would say that I would be play it to chill for an hour or so but then again most of my gaming is on the C64 these days.

    A Pig Quest - This looks nice, but I can tell from watching this video, that it would frustrate the hell out of me and have me screaming obscenities at the screen. Any game where it's impossible to avoid taking damage from the enemies gets a pass from me.
    Axiom Fantastica - I hope they remove the four dots from around the player sprite as it looks really odd. Actually, it looks like the player sprite is bugged.

    • @rhyshovey-RPH
      @rhyshovey-RPH Год назад +2

      Ha ha, I can't believe you noticed those! :O I promise they will be gone, they are just temp crap so I can see the sprite edges. I'm doing all the graphics/tools/code so I've needed to prioritize. There will be quite a few enhancements left to come. I have a Google sites page that always has the latest on the project. Thanks for your interest, that's what makes it all happen for me!

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul Год назад +1

      @@rhyshovey-RPH I figured it was something intentional because of the way the dots formed a perfect square. I mainly noticed them because I was a huge C64 pirate back in the 80s and it wasn't uncommon to see cracked games where one or more of the sprites had extra pixels around them. I assume this was caused by corrupted data. I had a copy of Epyx Championship Wrestling that was perfect except that the sprite for one character would turn into a block of garbage every time it turned in a certain direction. :)

    • @danielmantione
      @danielmantione Год назад +2

      It is often not a matter of ignoring, but more failing. Especially nowadays developers hate NTSC incompatibilities just as much as users do, however, there exist technical realities. For example scrolling the screen along two axes is very hard to impossible to do on NTSC and many developers give up.
