    I'm a sophomore, majoring in civil engineering. Took all the needed calc, physics, and science class but just now taking Introduction to Engineering (which I shouldve took a long time ago). My first career fair is coming up next month- I dont have any experience related to projects (because those projects will come from my Intro to Eng. class which just started last week) and I'm trying to create a resume.
    My only experience relates to being in the band for my church- I'm one of the "worship leaders (singer)" and this has been going on for years. I'm fully committed to it, I spend hours each week per Sunday service. Next, I played the flute for 6 years and have been "flute section leader" in high school for a while Based on this info, should I write how I'm committed to some of these activities even though its not related to my field? How do I relate all of these different jobs to make me somehow stand out? Thanks for reading this long comment.

      You seem to show leadership in your activities. Since you’re still a sophomore, I would just put everything down on your resume to fill it up. Once you start working on projects related to your major, you can start replacing less relevant work for more relevant work.

    Hi, quick question. I'm a 3rd year mechanical engineering student and I am looking to get a summer internship. My question is a lot of companies for mechanical engineering don't really specify too much into what you'll be doing so writing a section with relevant skills is a bit harder as you can do a variety of different projects in one company, so should I write some more general points in terms of skills and qualities? Thanks.
    Also just found your channel today and I think it's awesome been watching a lot of your videos 😀👍

      Thanks for the support!
      If there isn't a job description, I would focus more on writing as many technical skills as possible. If it's mechanical engineering most likely there will be a need to know CAD, so I would list projects related to CAD and other similar software.

  • @LabibaIkram

    Can you please make a video about the engineering software skills which will be helpful for our future jobs as an electrical engineer? Thanks...

    HI @GoBeyondEngineering , I would like to ask if it is worth mentioning non-engineering related projects such as projects related to higher education advocacy? Thanks.

    • @RelearnMath
      @RelearnMath  6 лет назад

      Hi Jomari,
      It depends. If you have empty space in your resume I would list it. Otherwise I would stick to technical experience.
      When I look at resumes, I personally look for related experience/technical skills and during the interview, topics such as advocacy usually come up.

    The whole "1 page" thing and "objective" is no longer accurate, and hasn't been for a while apparently. If you need more than 1 page, then page 2 better have at least half the page used. An objective is outdated, and a summary of qualifications is preferred. That's the new recommendation.

  • @nishitagarwal8614
    @nishitagarwal8614 3 года назад

    There shouldn't be a objective
    Only necessary when you are particularly applying for that position and you're are not from the same field.

    Just wondering. If you are applying for several positions at one job what should your objective be? Im qualified for several of the positions and would love to do any of them.

    • @RelearnMath

      Good question! In that case I would keep it general.

    What really screws people over is not having a really involved internship or a contract job that ends without renewal (both happened to me). Then you don't have much experience or much in the skills section which is pretty much all they look at. If it is an entry level you best have like a 3.5 or higher otherwise you'll get looked over too Honda, Marathon and lots of other big companies even ask you that straight up. I had a 2.7 because I switched majors (but they don't even ask about that) and always get passed on after a phone interview even if it goes really well.
    So yeah you pretty much have to have 2-3 nice internships and a great GPA to get anywhere.

      @@RelearnMath ok, thanks. Also, at the beginning I didn't really have an interest and felt kind of lost about where I was going so I got some bad grades. The last 3 semesters I've been doing great to bring my GPA up and have finally reached a 3.0, but I only have 2 semesters left. My Engineering GPA is a 3.3 though, should I use that as my GPA instead? Or just exclude it?

    • @RelearnMath
      @RelearnMath  4 года назад

      Yes! You should use it! Anything above 3.0 should go on your resume. Many employees have a 3.0 cutoff.

      @@RelearnMath ok, so it wont look deceitful or anything like that to use my Engineering GPA 3.3 instead of my overall GPA 3.0?

    All depends on the recruiter. Could be one or 4 pages.
    If the recruiter doesn't like your name because his wife cheat on him with a guy same name as you you are screwed. If the recruiter have a favorite friend for a job you are screwed if the recruiter already choose the one. you are screwed if the recruiter prefer a girl you are screwed if he prefer younger candidate you are screwed if he prefer olde candidate with experience you are screwed and so on.
    I alway do my 3 pages sometimes I get hire sometimes I dont mostly I always get job
    What really matters is your experience and try to be clear and specific also if you send the resume first that matter big time
    Also depend how desperate is the company for your skills. Other is time and season too
    Its not just about resume one page or 3 pages its like going to buy groceries you never know the apple you gonna bring home.
    Same concept you try the best and that's it.
    Good luck
