Some people just do! Might be connections, or just finding the right company, and so on. I did not even try my first year but my sister (who is still in school as an M.E.) got an internship her second year and was at a community college.
Thats what I am wondering too. I am studying M.E and fortunately I could obtain 4.0 GPA for my first 31 credit hours, but after browsing some internship requirements, I feel like I am nowhere near to qualify to those, except the GPA ( sorry for my bad english, still learning it )

Your first year! You literally have nothing to lose by applying (besides some time lol). Chances are much lower of getting hired but who knows, I had friends apply their first year, got hired, and were getting paid very well.
It will have an affect, some companies will say you don't have enough experience. But if you get rejected from 50 companies and 1 accepts you then you have officially gotten an internship. They know where you're at and even as just a first year some companies will find stuff for you to do and it will be a lot of on the job learning. I didn't mention in this video but I asked a lot of questions during this project when I got stuck.
There are many people who intern at JPL the Summer following their freshman year so you have no excuse not to try. Also if you get that first internship, they're almost guaranteed to hire you as an intern for another 2 or 3 years.

All I really had was the classes I had taken at my university that were more design based and I included those projects on my resume. Everything else was more work experience, leadership positions I had on campus, and stuff like that. Most places looking for interns understand that you most likely don't have a ton of experience so even if you don't just include leadership and job stuff because they look for soft skills such as being able to work in teams and stuff like that.

This is basically the same for my experience as a Civil. My degree gave me the basic concepts. As an entry level, I didn’t run into anything that I have never seen in school, but I only had the basic knowledge. There was a lot of reading and learning in the first year exactly how you described. I only did autocad for the first 3 months. But received more design work after my autocad skills were sharpened.

I love learning the nuts and bolts of things, and any "street moves" that I can acquire (like applying for jobs that you're only half-qualified for, I never would have done that, especially in a STEM field, but now...) That was a peach of an internship, mostly because you got to design and build, which I think is what every engineering major lusts for. And it was cool that you were able to do soldering. I would like to know, though, did you leverage this internship into a career with this company or any other? Certainly it had to be great "resume filler" (experience) at the very least.
Thanks for the comment! I did not get a job at this company after school, my entry level job was much different (as you'll see in a video coming out soon where I go into detail on my first job). After the internship my boss told me to get in contact with them when I'm close to graduating about a full time position but there were many other companies I wanted to work at and once I got into one of those I didn't need to reach out to this company I interned at. But yes it was a huge resume booster that was a talking point of lots of interviews I did during my last year.
That was a cool project. Very different from my EE internship. I worked in a big factory, got to wear a hard hat and high-vis vest and basically do a bunch of small pet projects for busy people. Usually write documentation and small administration stuff. I also got to research expensive industrial electrical measuring equipment and pester a lot of sales people for info and price quotes by email and phone. (A very useful engineering skill they don't teach you in class. )

There are lots of free resources on the Internet! Even here on RUclips, there are many good Tutorials about Arduino and Coding. You just have to find them :D

Just adding to this a bit. Here in NC, Duke Energy has many different levels of internships within Engineering. Many are for seniors in high school. Others for freshman and sophomores in college, then jr's and seniors in college. Lastly, they have them for students going for their doctorates. So many opportunities, just have to start looking early and get ahead on everything.

He's referring to his major GPA. This is different than overall GPA. Major GPA is based off of the classes you take that fall under the engineering umbrella, i.e. Statics, Mechanics of Solids, etc. vs. a public speaking class

I also heard that I can have better chances at getting accepted in a smaller company for an internship (and that you learn more in a smaller one). Last question:Do you maybe know if companies accepts students from different countries? By that i mean if i can get an internship in another country? (probably a stupid question :x )
Small companies are great because you will probably be a bigger part of whatever you're working on. You can go to various company websites and apply through their "careers" page. I didn't really do that for my internship but I did for my full time job. And yes you can work in other countries but you have to go through the proper steps to legally do so and fill out all the necessary paperwork. Also for some companies it would be more difficult especially one's that work on defense projects for the government. At least in the US you need to be a citizen to get a clearance (there may be some exceptions to this but not totally sure).
Check the bulletin boards and talk to the various offices in your major's building. See if they offer any co-op or internship programs with specific companies. University often have relationships with certain companies.

Everyone has to go through that process. During that difficult time, it will determine who deserved to be an engineer and who is not. Since engineering is not for everyone. Sorry if I offended anyone that reading this commend.
Few years back, i remember watching your videos. Now, i will be having my internship (1st july) and im nervous but excited at the same time. Its funny because i literally have no idea what you was saying in this video about your project, like at all. Fast forward to present, huh, it all makes sense to me. I understand what youre trying to convey and do. Its funny how different and more mature of me as a person and as a future enegineer, to see how much have changed in the past couple of years

It's so wonderful how the more you learn about the STEM subjects, the more you realise their interconnection: for example, one of my mathematics lecturers works with biologists to model biological systems.

Thank you! And yes mechatronics engineers can do mechanical or electrical jobs. It's very hard to say what exactly they can or cannot do. But typically you'll hear of them working in robotics, or on control systems, and things like that. Like I'm sure they could help design the suspension of a car, but that's mostly mechanical engineering work (no electrical aspect) so a mechanical engineer might be ideal for it. But if there was some suspension system that had electrical components where it reacted to the curvature and bumps of the road (I talk about something like this briefly in the automotive engineering video), then a mechatronics engineer might be good for that.
I applied to a placement at Thales, and as soon as I submitted, they replied with an email on request to finish online aptitude assessment which I failed (all happened on the same day)despite practicing it for the past year of placement application process, and it feels like I am never gonna even get hired as I applied to over 70 placement and summer internships, only 3 got through to actual interview but were still rejected, what should I do?
@@Hmonks I didn't receive the internship, but got one during the summer, which was spent in Edmonton, Canada as a lab assistant/ intern for 3 months, then 12 months of placement year at a scientific instrument company focusing on use of optics, finishing my degree with my final year, and now 1 month my PhD involving in nanophotonics and metamaterial instrumentation
I don't know this as a fact but I'd imagine there's more competition for Any engineering position in Germany. It's a very engineering-oriented nation and culture.
It was more of an arduino project and I took an entire class dedicated to projects using the arduino in school. Remember what the handheld printer was. It was an arduino, a sensor, some random electronics, and an ink cartridge. Although I didn't know about a handheld printer specifically, I had experience with most of the things that made it up.
Can you make a video on how to get into Genetic Engineering Research? It's a big field right now with CrispR and everything so I'd like to see how someone could get started into it

It's not a required for u in first year but play with arduino for now is fun and will make ur final year project much easier.

The definitely a lot of overlap! And no soldering just takes a little practice to get it right but doesn't take long to learn.
