My internships 10 years ago were not offering this much. If I was a student now, I'd want to capitalize on these paid internships. Interning as a freshman at Amazon for 9K a month!!! That amount is so wild to me.
@@MessiestFort yup, and things like public transportation/general safety is way more expensive in the us. europe as a whole has more benefits, even tho you earn less there.
Some of the interns we get are honestly better than some of our mid level engineers. The level of competition is insanely high. The ones that get the offers have some of the most insane resumes I’ve ever seen. Starting companies, saving the planet, tons of awards, presidents of engineering clubs, FAANG internships their freshman year, etc. all before they are 20 years old. It’s humbling talking to them.
It's a huge advantage to attend these ivy schools as you get internships at Amazon, Meta Apple etc. and upon graduation you placed at these same companies. Otherwise it's very difficult to break into these firms as an experienced professional. The interview process is very brutal !!
As a computer science major Im must be doing something majorily wrong. Arent interships supposed to give little to no money? Why are they earning 2-3x more than i do with a full time job
Bro the salaries are insane. But I freeze up when it comes to technical stuff. I am a CS student but just the overall job environment is just tense. Hopefully I can land an Internship by the 2023 Summer 😬.
@@malcolmjelani3588 If you’re doing trivial stuff like changing colors then yeah it’s low stress but for anything else it’s tasking It wouldn’t pay so much if anyone could easily do it
As someone who is 29 years old finishing up my freshman year at a local community college for CS, this was pretty eye opening to say the least. I currently make $85-$187/hr as a utility contractor, however this is physical work, it's insane hearing how much these undergrads are making for their first job or internship. I can see I need to start working much harder.
Well, if you get into big tech, it'd be $100/hr ish to start and top out at $200/hr, beyond that it's just really unlikely, part genius and part right place right company right time. Salary doesn't really climb dramatically with experience like it does for most professions. Of course I have no clue on your financial situation, so I can't speak specifically on your risk profile and circumstances, but big tech is known to age discriminate. Someone in his 30s would be looked at unkindly by many companies. This is just an obstacle though, not something insurmountable, but it is a significant risk. Best of luck!
The internships these students have is definitely amazing since they are in silicon valley and go to very prestigious schools, but it is definitely not the norm everywhere else in the country. In the Midwest SWE internships are between $15-$25/hr (probably closer to $30 if you go for minneapolis/chicago)
All companies pay Interns in States? That's actually impressive. In Malaysia, not all companies willing pay Interns but taking Interns as cheap labor for them. If there are companies willing to pay interns, the interns only will earn around USD 80-200 per month. Not per hour but per month.
In the Netherlands, companies aren’t required to pay a salary for internships and they don’t. Instead they either don’t pay at all or they pay a reimbursement for minor expenses like travel. You’re considered extremely lucky if you get €1K a month. Most pay between no money at all and €300 monthly. Big companies like Ahold (biggest Dutch retailer) pay €500 monthly. ING (major Dutch bank) pays €750 monthly. Of course they’re not Apple or Amazon size but it’s still substantially lower, although college & university costs are far lower here
my first non-tech full-time job paid $18/hr during the pandemic. decided to work super hard to transition to tech in 2 years and went for a technical masters. landed my first internship paying 8.5k/month. my position isn’t SWE and do very little coding though. it was all worth it despite all the tears and sleepless nights due to the tech market downturn. you will get to where you want to eventually although it might take longer to do so.
I kinda wish I had a knack for software engineering but I never did. My major was OMIS and I was horrible at the coding classes. To know someone made what I make in a year over a summer is saddening and makes me wish I chose a different major. However the more I think about it the more I realize that I kind of like my job right now I am fresh out of college and just signed with the company making around 50K a year. It’s not bad, but hearing 45 bucks an hour for an internship is insane because companies did not even give me the opportunity to have an internship.
Uhh this video is old. There's plenty of people who are jobless after months of applying. Lots of fresh grads earning peanuts etc. Problem with tech is all these biased videos and tiktoks making it sound like it's easy, these people earn a ton because they are ivy league students who are good enough to participate in hackathons and do well to get into FAANG. Most people are not at this level. Most people can't pass faangs 4-6 round interviews. Don't believe me? Google it.
It would be better actually to share their experience with us , like how they made it and to share real and true parts of their life , the projects they worked on ..these stuff

I just got my first internship as a junior (switched to CS as a sophomore), but it's at my university which pays minimum wage for student workers. So I'm making $12/hr but I'm happy that at least I have something relevant to put on my resume now.
just got into coding and listening to this is pure motivation. When i finished my first apprenticeship i made 26800 Euros a year. Crazy to hear what they make over a summer or even an hour. I was at like 13.50Euros or so per hour
to all of you who feels bad about these intern making a lot of money, dont. They come from Berkeley, one of the most prestigious school for comp science and there are only a number of limited spots each year. They are high flyers and even though it sucks to say this, but most of you (probably including me) won't be able to reach their potential statistically speaking. Just do your best and improve everyday.
@@namanhkapur this is downright copium if your parents weren't rich enough to make you a legacy and you are too stupid to get accepted / scholarship you will quite literally never make the same amount as some privileged kid who got this opportunity. you will be playing catch up and will lose at every turn.
I definitely agree with you because they graduated from one of the best university in the world. I worked at startups for 2.5 years as full stack developer and at the same time I worked at the retail store. Now, I'm making my another internship today as a blockchain developer for free. If you have at least 4 years experience, you can reach their level.
As a sophomore who didn’t start coding until I began college, hearing the internships these people have done makes me both hopeful and hopeless at the same time. Is it normal to feel as if you are not prepared even though you’re on the right track?
This is exactly my situation, I feel the same way. I recently got some advice from a Software Engineer at RUclips who's been in the industry for 3 years now; he told me that since everyone is on a different track, instead of comparing yourself to the people around you, compare yourself to yourself yesterday. That totally changed my outlook on this kind of thing being surrounded by so many smart people who seem to all have it together.
Same here! As a CS major who knows more about programming languages than most of my classmates (even helping them with their schoolwork), I still got a much lower pay job than my classmates and even got rejected by the same company they applied for. Sometime bsing through interviews helps I guess lol. So my advice here would be, know enough technical skills to do your job and focus more on your communication and speech skills, they will get you through a lot.
I didn’t officially start coding till uni, and unis are 3 years here, landed google for second year intern and after third year full time at amazon, totally is possible to get in good companies
Game design/development is the main reason that I wish to get into CS for. This is very motivating. Although yes, non of them might actually be game developers, rather they're most likely to be software engineers. Still, very motivating.
This video is inspiring, thank you my friend. I can’t help but feel a little dismayed hearing some of these interns make more in a summer than I did in a year, working my ass off as a carpenter. Good on them for making good decisions. And good for you for showing what’s possible❤
I got my first internship because of a resume workshop where the guy who helped me clean my resume became my manager for the summer. Also good to note that i had a recommendation from a teacher…so networking and knowing ur people is a bonus
And then here in Spain, you make 1k a month for a fulltime intern - realistically less after tax. About 5$ an hour. And that's if you're qualified and lucky to get a placement.
As a senior who initially went in for computer science but ended up switching majors so many times because I wasnt sure what I wanted to do, I kinda wish I just stuck with computer science. But now Im ready to pursue computer science as my major even if it will take me a couple more years 👍
Never went to college, but got a tech internship nonethless at a big tech startup. I guess I'm kinda good at solving problems because they let me stay after 3 months, making $30/hour
Dang!!! I work for a cheese company and get payed $21.15 and topout is $27.50 plus $1.50 for nights. I'm deciding on either software engineer or network engineer.
This was cool! I am an accounting major already working in the field but I liked seeing this. Can’t believe how many of these internships pay off the bat. Especially that much. But it seems like they don’t hire them very often as they had a lot of internships. So high pay, but not very consistent?
@MonicaKumaran-jz5pt that’s crazy to me. Sounds like easy money too lol I guess I went the wrong path. I have it pretty easy though. I don’t know how the work is for that
Some Majors reasons 1. Some states are more expensive to live in, so salary tends to be a bit higher, not staggering but a little bit more 2. Most Interns work the summer only, with just a few excpetions, so the pay rate is adjusted for about three to 4 months ish, instead of a full year 3. Computer science is in high demand and alot of the work they do is in high demand, so paying alot of benefits and perks comes with that demand 4. It is a field that is growing and growing in diffrent ways, you have to keep ya self updated on everything, its a field that is changing quickly, you cant just practice and perfect one thing. You have to be a multi tasker, capable of doing multiple complex and rigiourus tasks at once
Keep in mind the cost of living in California is triple most other states. So those figures are absolutely adjusted for that reason. But software engineering in general is crazy stupid good money.
Keep in mind most of these internships are likely located in Berkeley where the cost of living is $3-4k a month. So in reality these $25-50 internships are not as pleasant as they sound.
Wow seriously impressive! I specialize in marketing in the entertainment and publishing industry, it’s really interesting to see these transparent numbers from college students in a different field of interest!
I'm just here in my 30s, trying to get into a company, got let go recently at a startup as a SE, tough when you didn't study in college for this and you graduated from a bootcamp and companies don't want to take chances. I'm still going to give it my all and achieve this dream and the salary that comes with.
I just graduated in December with a master's degree in software development and now I'm currently in a boot camp for QA engineering. I'm hoping that having the boot camp stacked on top of my master's degree will help me in getting an interview
And then there's me, who did an internship in a big consultant company in Portugal and received 1,2€/hour. And most companies don't even pay for internships. I was already considered to be "lucky".
This video was inspiring but also a hard pill to swallow. I haven't done any internships but I did GSoC this year and did hackathons. Great video Namanh!
Damn. I was Mechanical engineering with 3 internship during college. My highest earning was for $23 and hour and the lowest being $30 a day (really worked for free. They essentially gave me 30 for gas and food). I’m missing out…….
You got to remember they are in California and to live their is not easy financially so the money that seems a lot is really not enough in the grand scheme of things. But nonetheless I think this is a great way to show others pursuing higher education to start early with the internships because the more experience and knowledge you can attain the better.
I am reminded of the fact that my town's local authority tried to pay me 60 euro per MONTH for my Software Engineering internship until finally settling for 180 euro s month.
Man software is so GOATed. I’m an EE in the aerospace sector-I made $25/hr at my last internship and I make around $32/hr at my current one. Would kill for $40+ an hour lol
I feel you. I chose EE because I was more interested in the Hardware side. Got an internship at a top company for Analog Electronics, but videos like this make me question my decision.
After applying to more than 850 internships and only getting 3-4 interviews and one offer from a shady company that I won't join. I am about to give up. PS: I am a Masters Student at one of the best CS school in the world plus I have 3+ years of software development experience.
I am studying nutrition and dietetics and the 1,200 hour internship we are required to do is unpaid. Sometimes they cost money too. Watching this I had to take some deep breaths haha.
They are very lucky. I was unable to get an internship due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, I graduated with BS in MIS during the time of the pandemic. The worst part is that I could not get a tech job due to being hard of hearing/deaf. I am stuck in these situation problems. I was now thinking of entering a master in business analytics/data analytics program. Do you think it's worthy? Please advise
OMG, it looks like that first internship from the second guy learned really quickly Bio-Engineering didn’t pay well and switched course quick!😂😂 I just find that hilarious!!😂😂😂
And I'm from greece..currently looking to start my internship in CS, and some companies dont want to hire interns, because by law they are obliged to pay 300euros every month.
Question: I am 40 years old. No college degree and am interested in getting into tech. I live in the Bay Area and I am comfortable with computers meaning I fix my own computers and deal with software issues when they arise on my own equipment but never have done it for a living. I am a blue collar worker and always have been. What avenue should I take to get into tech that would be fast and preferably the cheapest. I left college because it was too expensive and I didn’t qualify for any grants because I always worked full time. I was considering getting some certs and starting out in help desk and seeing where that goes but so many people online trash help desk work plus the pay is low. So I hope someone here can point me in the right direction
As N N said, you should just learn on your own and be a project-based learner. The projects will be helpful to put on your resume if they are good enough. This is the order that I learned the skills: JavaScript HTML CSS Webpack Git C++ TypeScript React I only learned the ones needed to be competitive. The most competitive right now are TypeScript and React (as in, very good to learn). I also have made a couple of REALLY strong projects (months of development) so I put those on the resume (only the really good ones). You can practice with smaller ones, but you should have at least one "big" project to show off as many skills as possible. I have the final interview step of applying for Amazon on Friday as of the time of writing. You can get far being self-taught!

Apply to smaller companies especially fintech companies, they still pay really good and aren’t as competitive. I not the best cs student but I’ve been able to land good paying internships ($30/hr+). Fintech is not as saturated and is a good field to break into especially now.
god damn i should've gone into comp sci. i'm a EE. i make just under $60 an hour. unfortunately the one class they make you take for EE at my schools was C/C++. When that'a your first introduction to programming it's a real buzzkill lol. i do some programming for fun at home, like made a discord bot that would create postmates accounts, and refer themselves so you get the $25 referral credit and basically eat free (assuming your order is $25 or under, or want to put in multiple orders). that project was a lot of fun
@@can1beatme I would but they patched it when Postmates got bought out by Uber. Last I checked now Postmates and UberEats only gives you a $10 credit. They also updated their system where you have to actually get a delivery to get the referral credit. Back in the day Postmates screwed up and let the referral work for pickup orders so you could order something cheap like $0.25 or under and mark it picked up in the app without even having to be in proximity to the store

Interning as a freshman at Amazon for 9K a month!!! That amount is so wild to me.
I'm graduating in December and currently have one internship. And it only pays $15/hour. You guys out there make $50/hour. That's insane.
something to work towards!
I'm exactly the same haha. Graduating in December with only 1 internship. Here's to both of us making more in the future!
These internship salaries are phenomenal. Wages in Europe are not even comparable! (I live in France and top firms only pay 2k€/3k€ per month)
You also have to factor the fact that ; the safety net is more robust in Europe. Healthcare is very expensive in North America.
:)
Omg ! That’s very humbling
Where do you work?
It's a huge advantage to attend these ivy schools as you get internships at Amazon, Meta Apple etc. and upon graduation you placed at these same companies. Otherwise it's very difficult to break into these firms as an experienced professional. The interview process is very brutal !!
As a computer science major Im must be doing something majorily wrong. Arent interships supposed to give little to no money? Why are they earning 2-3x more than i do with a full time job
When something is too good to be true it isn’t true 😂
This video is most likely a lie
Bro the salaries are insane. But I freeze up when it comes to technical stuff. I am a CS student but just the overall job environment is just tense. Hopefully I can land an Internship by the 2023 Summer 😬.

Hey, lots of money in Chicago from the quant firms actually
Very true, that's how it is here in ohio
All companies pay Interns in States? That's actually impressive. In Malaysia, not all companies willing pay Interns but taking Interns as cheap labor for them. If there are companies willing to pay interns, the interns only will earn around USD 80-200 per month. Not per hour but per month.
Its become more of the norm over the last decade because applicants couldn't afford to take an internship.
It's generally illegal not to pay interns in the US.
That's awesome. Congratulations to you. 🎉 May I know what your role is, please?
Google it.
It would be better actually to share their experience with us , like how they made it
and to share real and true parts of their life , the projects they worked on ..these stuff

I just got my first internship as a junior (switched to CS as a sophomore), but it's at my university which pays minimum wage for student workers. So I'm making $12/hr but I'm happy that at least I have something relevant to put on my resume now.

Is it normal to feel as if you are not prepared even though you’re on the right track?
it’s 100% normal, i felt the same way - important thing is being out of your comfort zone and slowly you’ll feel both more confident and competent
I don't know if I want to do web development or something in the cs field. Can I get some advice?
Game design/development is the main reason that I wish to get into CS for. This is very motivating. Although yes, non of them might actually be game developers, rather they're most likely to be software engineers. Still, very motivating.
De be warned though, game development is the lowest paid, worst culture & work/life balance category in software engineering.
I do game dev using unity just as a hooby but I will never make the mistake of choosing it as a career
Game design I heard has a horrible work culture so tread carefully

This was cool! I am an accounting major already working in the field but I liked seeing this. Can’t believe how many of these internships pay off the bat. Especially that much. But it seems like they don’t hire them very often as they had a lot of internships. So high pay, but not very consistent?
@MonicaKumaran-jz5pt that’s crazy to me. Sounds like easy money too lol I guess I went the wrong path. I have it pretty easy though. I don’t know how the work is for that
Some Majors reasons
1. Some states are more expensive to live in, so salary tends to be a bit higher, not staggering but a little bit more
2. Most Interns work the summer only, with just a few excpetions, so the pay rate is adjusted for about three to 4 months ish, instead of a full year
3. Computer science is in high demand and alot of the work they do is in high demand, so paying alot of benefits and perks comes with that demand
It's not triple lmao. It's maybe double at best. I would know, I'm paying it :'(. But it's not as bad as people make it out to be.
Keep in mind most of these internships are likely located in Berkeley where the cost of living is $3-4k a month. So in reality these $25-50 internships are not as pleasant as they sound.
Are you sure ?
many of them were remote

As N N said, you should just learn on your own and be a project-based learner. The projects will be helpful to put on your resume if they are good enough.
This is the order that I learned the skills:
JavaScript
HTML
CSS
Webpack
Git
C++
TypeScript
React
I only learned the ones needed to be competitive. The most competitive right now are TypeScript and React (as in, very good to learn). I also have made a couple of REALLY strong projects (months of development) so I put those on the resume (only the really good ones). You can practice with smaller ones, but you should have at least one "big" project to show off as many skills as possible.
