  • HPD Acting Chief of Police Larry Satterwhite briefs the media on an officer shot at 6000 Hollister.
    Preliminary information:
At 7:58 pm on Monday, July 8th, HPD received an Assault-in-Progress call stating that an elderly disabled couple was being assaulted by a male at the above address. Officers arrived at 8:07 pm and were flagged down by family members who stated the suspect was assaulting people around the corner. As officers approached the area, they heard someone yell that the suspect had a gun. Officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect instead started firing multiple rounds at the officers, striking one officer in the upper thigh. The officers did not return fire because the suspect quickly surrendered. He was taken into custody while the officer shot was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
(4:07) Chief Satterwhite also discusses the loss of HPD Technology Services employee Russell Richardson, who drown Monday after driving into floodwaters at I-45 and Houston Avenue.

The wounded officer, Fernando Garcia, 36, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to Memorial Hermann- Texas Medical Center in stable condition.
