    I always thought these "exploded view" art pieces looked cool. just wondering what it means by decommissioned. I would assume it means broken, as I'd hate to see working Gameboy parts just collecting dust. still beautiful though, and it'd be cool if they brought out a version that let you put a screen behind the front plate and play an animation, or run an emulator.

      That's my understanding as well; that they're only from damaged units / ones that no longer work. Wouldn't want to see functional units get harvested 😢
      Would love to have a small screen in the display; it'd save me from having to break out the tweezers to change over the art 😅

    Hey, congratulations on the sponsorship, dude! Also, that screen art swapping functionality is really cool! I remember watching the Cowboy Bebop video you did and being really impressed. I'm glad you used that for some of the custom screens!
    Maybe you could try doing some other animes in a pixel art format? Perhaps something like Mobile Suit Gundam or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

    Hypothetical question: If one were to assembled the GameBoy from this Art Frame Kit, would it work? Like is the platine a working one or just a cosmetic replica?

    • @mouseman2540
      @mouseman2540 Год назад +7

      I assume it wouldn't since he said the motherboard was decommissioned and the foam blocks glued to the back of it would probably mess some of it up as well.

    • @BJGpixel
      @BJGpixel  Год назад +5

      This was the first thing I wondered too! As I understand, the electronic components are sourced from non-functioning units - there was also no LCD screen. Still, I thought it would be funny to put a sticker on the frame that says "in case of emergency, break glass" 😅

  • @radry100
    @radry100 Год назад +6

    That thing is extremly overpriced though for a broken console, fake shell, a printed sheet and a cheap frame. This is worth $50 at most.

    There's nothing quite like actually seeing your GBC-styled pixel art inside a physical Gameboy screen to demonstrate just how well you nailed the look

  • @CKTDanny
    @CKTDanny Год назад +17

    Oooh that was a satisfying assembly 😌 The screen swap system you built out of foam is very clever too, it looks perfect from the video's angle!!
    Imagine if one of these kits came with an LCD and a hidden chip to run some firmware that lets you remotely change images! _Come to think of it, your patented display tech here probably does a better job than that considering how hard it was to see the original screens_ 😆

    • @BJGpixel
      @BJGpixel  Год назад +7

      Thanks! The _Screen Swapper_™️ was equal parts engineering and luck; I ended up getting some extra stability from the underside of the shell 😎 Would love to have a nice screen in there - but you're right, we'd have to swap it out for one of those bright LED displays like the Game Boy customizers do 😅

    Cool, congrats on the sponsorship! I can't really 'feel' it, as I never had a GameBoy, but I guess it fits among your other collectibles on the shelves :) I'm glad you included some of your artwork in the frame.
    I was a bit surprised to a black-neon-gold card inside and it not being part of the final display (I thought it was the background with labels, looked a bit cooler than a white background).

    It's very unclear if this is a sponsored video, or if you were sent the product for free but the company had no other guidelines or say in the contents of the video.
    I enjoyed it regardless as always, but I really hope you're a bit more transparent and responsible with the way you present content that has outside money either directly or indirectly involved in the future.

    As much as I think it's great you got a sponsor, it seems like a bit of a scam. The Gameboy set is more than £100 over what you'd pay for just a GBC, and I doubt that a frame and some foam covers the rest. I would also be bummed out if these boards actually worked, and the company sells them as 'decommissioned' to make a profit. It wouldn't surprise me though.
    I think a cooler idea would be to get some kind of LCD screen mounted behind a repro GBC shell that can display stuff. That'd make a nice dynamic display. This just feels like a waste.

    • @Junkuza
      @Junkuza Год назад +2

      Considering the age of the tech there's likely a lot of gbcs that don't work anymore, much like OG gameboys, so while I get what you're saying I think there's probably enough duffed up gbcs out there that this is viable.
      Also, from what I can gather, the price is because essentially the circuitry and buttons are likely the only things authentically from the gameboy- the shell is a reconstruction, so you're paying for the design, printing and finishing of that piece.
      All that aside though it's good to be careful- it's a lot of money to part with, especially in this economy for something like this.

    • @mintpalmer
      @mintpalmer Год назад +5

      @@Junkuza you say that, but unless the board is damaged to a crazy degree, most of the time it's repairable. The only things I would consider unfixable would also affect the look of the board - cut traces, melted board, etc. Even those with a lot of work can be repaired. Most of the time swapping components would probably bring it back to life.
      Repro shells are dead cheap these days. You could probably get one for £5. If anything, it's probably cheaper for them to buy cheaply made shells than clean up the existing ones.
      I don't think the extra cash is worth the presentation if I'm being honest, especially when the console is either working, or can be brought back to life with a little bit of work.

    • @Junkuza
      @Junkuza Год назад +1

      @@mintpalmer fair points, I guess it depends if you want to put the work into fixing it and/or outsourcing the bits to fix it up rather that just ... Pulling it apart and selling it as 'an art piece'.

    • @mintpalmer
      @mintpalmer Год назад

      @@Junkuza on a personal scale, I would totally agree. For a company selling most likely repairable tech for a massive markup... I dunno. Seems pretty scummy.

    That's a cute project to do, and it's a fairly neat idea too, you often see controllers in those shadow boxes so a disassembled console is a good idea. I'm sure gamers will go mad over it.
    On another note, they need to sort out their website, I was going to browse it and it got blocked by my anti-virus.
