Awesome work. This takes me back as 25 years ago my first published game that I worked on as a programmer was "Yoda Stories" on the original GameBoy. The GameBoy Color was announced at the end of development and all the existing black and white art needed to be converted quickly. We had to support both GB and GBC. The amazing pixel artist for the project was still in high school at the time.
Came here to mention Yoda Stories in the comments, but wow!! That was one of my favorite (and first) games a kid! And I totally went nuts for the character art--I remember getting to the level where you meet Han and Boba Fett and Jabba, and how cool it was seeing those characters in the Pokemon-like style. I didn't even have a GBC at the time, but the black and white sprites still oozed so much charm 😍
So weird you say that about the pixel artist being in high school at the time. I was a freelance pixel artist from 15-23 years old for licensed Nintendo ds and gba advance titles. I wonder how common that is.
While I've been making pixel art here and there, your videos inspired me to really get into it (not to mention learn from them) a few days ago I put up my first asset pack in the itchio store and made my first sale. It isn't much (not yet) but I'm happy to have made it this far! Thank you for the videos, Brandon!
One very minor thing I could add here- for the lightsabers, having the glow around the black outline makes them look a bit bulky in terms of the design, so I think rather than that, you could replace the black outline with the respective color. This keeps the glow look without the bulkiness. That's a minor thing, though, these look absolutely fantastic! This would've been an actually good licensed movie game!
When I saw Star wars in the notif for a moment I thought it was _that_ time of the year again and I was like "2023 just started man" 😭 That said, this is some nice scene composition
Aside from the obvious choices like the Trench Run or the Battle of Hoth, I think scenes like Luke's training with Yoda or the Millennium Falcon escaping from the giant space worm would be awesome to see. Also imagining a holo-chess minigame would be cool, though I have no idea how that would work out.
I love how much you lean into the rules/restrictions of the 'medium' (i.e. the console you're emulating). It makes it look super authentic, and it's something I often see get lost with other pixel art that attempt to look retro but doesn't commit all the way. Great job, I wish this game was real 😅
Wow the scope of this one is incredible! I loved how each selected scene showcases a different aspect of this hypothetical game. It makes it very believable to see features like speeder bike riding & lightsaber combat, but then to also see that a hud and dialogue UI has been designed too! And that this was accomplished "according to spec"; what an amazing level of detail! 👾 Also that was a great passage on the GameBoy Colour's...colours! I had no idea it had such a wide range of colours to chose from and it makes me want to be more conscious about how the colours are used in existing games 🎨 Which is also convenient cuz I've recently been taking an interest in older GameBoy hardware again hahaha
Thanks dude! Yeah it's fun to see how the different beats throughout an action movie can translate into different types of gameplay; they really make great action RPGs! 😅 I had fun learning about the specifications as well; despite appreciating the style for long time, it was something I didn't really know much about before going into this, so I'm gonna have to play some more GBC games as well, with these new things in mind!
Ever since I played the Lion King game, I started to imagine how each scene would translate as a game every time I saw a movie as a kid. This is exactly what was on my mind. Great work.
You videos are always such a huge inspiration. Im working on a GBC game and this just reignited the spark. I’d been clamoring for your Luke Skywalker follow up. I think a Dagobah stage where you run some platforming and puzzle obstacles with Yoda on your back would be a fun challenge. Stages where you have to leave him behind to press a button or unlock a room for access because you don’t both fit in the doorway.
always love watching you work and problem solve. You tend to have this very traditional style to everything thats neat to see. Congrats on 200k subs btw.
Love these! I’m on a major God of War binge right now and would love to see retro style-demakes of iconic GoW moments. You always capture the essence of the characters so well in every form, and I want to see a mini, rage filled sprite.
This video is a great exploration of what Return of the Jedi could look like as a Game Boy Color game! The artwork is amazing and the technical considerations are really interesting. Highly recommend watching!
Hey, Dude. I wanted to say thank you for all of the projects and exercises you post. If I'm having a "day," or I'm truly looking for inspiration, I can always find it here. Stay safe, and stay awesome.
So cool! I always learn something new watching your videos, and I really enjoy seeing the behind the scenes of your process on these larger projects. Now, I just want to plug this cartridge into my GBC, lol!
I would love to see the phantom menace. Maybe a world screen with obi, quigon and jar going through the planet core with all the giant fish, the gungan federation war fight and of couse, the Darth Maul dual. :D
As someone who does (hobby) gameboy color development, I think you nailed it. I don't see anything that couldn't be done on the gameboy color. Even the 10 (8x8) sprites per line limit isn't violated as far as I can see. The speeder bike scene could definitely be turned into a real game ROM with a bit of effort. The other scenes will require a lot more work to create actual gameplay and will need more sprite work.
It would be awesome to see famous star wars space battles in the style of a top down/side scrolling shooter up. Stuff like the trench run, both battle etc.
Imagine the cancelled Star Wars game 1313, a game about Boba Fett exploring the lower levels of Coruscant, as a gritty Metroidvania, You do some excellent sci-fi neon industrial cities, I think this could be used as a way to explore lighting and detailed, rough textures.
Order 66, players could play a whole bunch of final stands as various Jedi. I love those scenes in the movie, not just jumping from Jedi to Jedi but also planet to planet. I've always loved seeing all the weird worlds in games/movies.
There IS a gameboy color top down star wars games, you might want to look into it. Its called Yoad stories and its style is very bright with the UI on the lower part of the screen rendered in a blinding blue that I never made sense off.
Thank you! Yeah I really liked working with the lighthearted cartoony vibe; kinda reminds me of how the Lego games take liberties with the source material 😄
The artwork looks fantastic! I wish there really was a fully playable game in that style. Another game with a really nice pixel aesthetic for the Game Boy Color is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I think you'd enjoy dissecting its design, not to mention it might make for some great CRT time ;)
I love your videos, Brandon! You are such a talented artist :) Do you think you could maybe someday make a tutorial on how to create an overworld (maybe together with someone that knows about programming) that spreads over multiple screens? :)
These are fantastic! Makes me wish it was a real game I could play, lol. I suggest doing this with the prequels. Two epic moments, and one meme shot, like an in-game cutscene of Anakin professing his hatred for sand.
I'm usually a bigger fan of your 16 bit work, so when I saw it was a GBC style I was sorta disappointed, but seeing it being fleshed out was fun to watch and the pieces came out amazing! Really do wish it was a true GBC game. Though if you're still taking scene recommendations, gotta do the Han shot first scene. Think it would make a great mini-game scene. Keep up the amazing work!
The jabba scene looked really cool. For the speeder bikes I would change the animation slightly, so that you (Luke) are in the front and would have to run from the trooper. Atm the trooper is in front of Luke. I'd add some vertical displacement so the distance between the bikes get's bigger and smaller from time to time. Also maybe the shadows looked cooler, if the bottom corners are round aswell. In the throne room I wonder if it looked a bit better, if the space outside was darker. Overall, I'd really love to play this game. Hope you're doing more of those in the future.
im just gonna throw this out there as a suggestion: using the 3d software Magicavoxel (free btw) for one of your videos. i love whenever u try out other artforms and techniques with limitations! :)

@@astrorobinson3716 Can you speak more to that? How’d you break into the industry?
While I've been making pixel art here and there, your videos inspired me to really get into it (not to mention learn from them) a few days ago I put up my first asset pack in the itchio store and made my first sale. It isn't much (not yet) but I'm happy to have made it this far!

This is a nice asset pack you made there! I especially like the sand tiles. Keep it up!
@@gorbasnordwind2890Thank you for your kind words! :D
Ooh very cool, congrats! Thanks for watching and good luck continuing with future work and assets! :D
really nice work and doubly impressive if you're new to pixel art

Man I'm not even a Star Wars fan but I'd play a game like that it looks fun !
Your videos always creatively inspire me to go make my own art! They’re a very clean-burning creative fuel ❤
When I saw Star wars in the notif for a moment I thought it was _that_ time of the year again and I was like "2023 just started man" 😭
That said, this is some nice scene composition
Hahaha yeah this is more like 2022 spilling over into this year 😅
Aside from the obvious choices like the Trench Run or the Battle of Hoth, I think scenes like Luke's training with Yoda or the Millennium Falcon escaping from the giant space worm would be awesome to see. Also imagining a holo-chess minigame would be cool, though I have no idea how that would work out.
Great ideas! I love the idea of the chess minigame as well, that'd be such a fun detail within the full game :D
The force is strong in your pixels! Amazing work as always. :)
I love how much you lean into the rules/restrictions of the 'medium' (i.e. the console you're emulating). It makes it look super authentic, and it's something I often see get lost with other pixel art that attempt to look retro but doesn't commit all the way.

Awesome Brandon!
This is one of my favourite movies, and I loved watching this video! Thanks, this made my day! :)

Great work.
Amazing and inspiring video. Keep up the good work man!
Fantastic art! Really love seeing the game boy style with star wars. Maybe because I played a few on GBA when I was younger.
you are my hero, anything you do is gold. Along with Deceiver, my favourite pixel artist ever and main font of inspiration
Every video is like a birthday. Rarely but pleasantly👍🏿
I wish I could play this. Awesome work.
Fantastic work as always!
I'm still waiting for "hello there" scene from Episode III. Every time your videos start I think of how it would look.
Haha yes I was thinking about that after making this! That needs to happen!
You videos are always such a huge inspiration. Im working on a GBC game and this just reignited the spark. I’d been clamoring for your Luke Skywalker follow up. I'm lucky that I find the problem-solving to be the fun part haha! Always appreciate your support btw, thanks so much! ✌️😎

Dude this is seriously the best! I want to see the whole movie in your pixel art style lol
Amazing and beautiful! Well done, very inspirational.
Fantastic work as always, friend!
Amazing video man! Love the fact you tried to limit yourself to the gbc palette, makes me want to try that too
Really nice job! This made my day. Keep it up!!
That is awesome!
My favourite video by you!
This series is super inspiring! Thank you so much!

Faaaaantastic Brandon!
Thanks dude! ✌️😎
Looks awesome, Great job!
Podracing would 100% be awesome haha
Ooh I love that idea! :D
okay, i never know how much i wanted actual star wars games in this style
It would be cool to see the backgrounds and sprites imported to GB Studio to run on a Gameboy cartridge haha. Great work!

Oh wow that's wild, pretty much what I was trying to do here! I knew about Yoda Stories for PC but didn't know about this GBC version 😱
Lovely!!! ♥♥♥
Really nice work! Love it. I did the Cloud City landing platform on my channel, had fun with it!
This has massively inspired me to make something based on some of my favourite films. Love your videos 😁 16:15
You're definitely getting more proficient! And it's always so inspiring to see 😁awesome work and thanks for making such great content!
These videos are like a massage for my brain
i think a pov of an xwing pilot avoiding meteors would look great in this style
beautiful pieces
this is so awesome!
the end of episode 1 of the mandaorian would be awesome to see in this style i think
dude I love your videos
Another Amazing work! I wish that could be scenes from a real game! ❤😍
Thank you! Yeah I really liked working with the lighthearted cartoony vibe; kinda reminds me of how the Lego games take liberties with the source material 😄
Love it!
Darth Sidious being a bit too cute for me 😄
A nice pod racer scene would be sick
someone really should make this game the world needs it
These are great. Was looking forward to seeing a Bib Fortuna in the palace scene but alas 😅
The artwork looks fantastic! I wish there really was a fully playable game in that style. Great job Brandon! How about doing a The Mandalorian themed game mock up? I'm can't wait for the 3rd season to come up :P
This would look cool as a game
He did the epic
you are amazing!

Love your content! Where should I start to learn on how to make 8-bit sprites and how to animate them? Simple stuff.
Return of the Jedi has gotta be my favorite
at a time where many youtubers strive for laughs and mrbeast/pewdiepie esque videos, I appreciate these videos. A good breath of fresh air
Pod racing has gotta be done
I am in no way interested in star wars but i will watch you draw anything so thank you for the cute video!
Gorgeous! Well done and thanks!
Now, someone make this a real game :P
The jabba scene looked really cool.

Please, teache us how to make a spinning character sprite
You are the best) Tell me, do you know what the base tile size is for Genesis?
im just gonna throw this out there as a suggestion: using the 3d software Magicavoxel (free btw) for one of your videos. i love whenever u try out other artforms and techniques with limitations! :)
Do the Yoda vs Count Dooku fight.
Are these open source?? May i make a game with them? 🤔 beautiful work
I think this would have worked really well if it was actually a game.
How do you do your CRT time segments?
Hello there
FYI A game for gb/gbc that looks a lot like this does exist, it's called yoda stories :) hidden gem.
10:27 made me laugh
Could you do the force awakens next? I think it would be cool :3
I like the part where he said his name was Brandon and then he made pictures out of tiny squares and I learned things
I literally couldn't care less about Star Wars, but seeing these, I want to play this non-existing game
Hey what software do you use?
Ok, give me half a year for 100% time of work and I'll do a GBC game for you in GB studio 😎👍
I want to play that game :'(
Now for the prequels? 😳👉👈
