First off, thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! This was the first episode of the new season that wasn't remotely competitive. I did like the way that Rajan joked with the losing team, he seemed to try to make it somewhat of a positive experience for them. The winning team had a huge score, and it featured one of the strongest individuals I've seen this season. Bad luck for the losers, and a great effort for the winners. My best to each contestant on both teams.
Emmanuel: great performance. Alagar seems to have reversed varifocal lenses. She tips her head back when looking far away and holds it naturally when looking at her team mates. I've never seen that before! I think she should get them checked by a qualified opticiaan.
I did quizbowl in the US and we often used "defer," but it's the first time I've heard it on UC, and from an American-I wonder if there's a connection.
@@arvindhmani06I'm one of those: I was thinking "Avakaya is usually a mango pickle, but what does that have to do with cashews? Must be that it has a different meaning too" 😅

so interesting to learn about how the UK refers to certain foods. i said “eggplant” in my head for baba ghanoush just to learn here that in the UK it’s called “aubergine” 😅
He is clearly not suited to the job. He not only forgot to give the answer, he doesn't even know the alphabet, which is ridiculous for a BBC presenter! Several times he has said the non-existent word Haitch instead of Aitch.
@@Alan_Clark It is important. He lacks gravitas. The Brash set makeover is awful too. I feel Sorry for the rest of the crew. This is only the third presenter in 61 years of the show. How DID the beeb get this call so wrong? What's going on over there? It's all goin' to 'ell in a 'and basket...
A lot has been said about Harrison, all of which is deserved, but the rest of Emmanuel wasn’t too bad either. Sutton had a lot of good answers near the beginning, and it seemed like Alagar came through well at the end. Chen had a couple crucial answers as well. With Harrison buzzing like that, they are my favorite for the finals for sure.
Thanks again CosmicPumpkin. As usual, got a few that none of the players got. When one team has a member from Alabama and another has one from Pennsylvania - I know where my money is 😁(and I'm from Louisiana!) And don't be shy, Alagar - PA is a big place. Give us a city/town (or at least a county).
Harrison, in his communicative endeavors, exhibits an inclination towards an exuberant and extravagant abundance of linguistic expressions, often tending towards verbosity that, amusingly, bespeaks a proclivity for the utilization of an extensive and copious array of words to convey his ideas, thoughts, and sentiments.
Wow, great performances from Alagar and Harrison with the other two chipping in too. But were Jesus just a buzzer shy team which made Emmanuel look amazingly good? Thanks so much for the upload from down here in Mexico
For the first time in this series, it felt like heels were being dragged, and the fast pace fell off a bit - might've been due to more starters for 10 being dropped than there have been - very impressive from the winners, but I now reserve judgment until the second round is complete on any teams - seen enough 1st round smashings and then a not as good second round to not pin down front-runners at this point.
I feel like one of the last couple of episodes was slower with the leading team noticeably slowing things down. But series in general has been extremely quick.
Is there any question that Harrison doesn't know? I don't want to jinx but from his first impression I feel we can get another Brandon Blackwell. Also Sutton was amazing with the bonuses. A very strong team, can see them in the semis.
He's definitely the stand out so far. But he's no Brandon as yet. Many of Harrison's attempts were incorrect guesses even during the team consultations... Brandon was always astonishing to the degree that he seemed to always be on the money... even when pulling a guess answer out of the ether!
What a fun episode! Thanks for uploading :) I'm seeing people comparing Harrison to Brandon from a few years ago, but tbh I'm just hoping for another St John's vs. Merton kind of year. They were just extremely good 😂
Their nails had all been painted. Presumably, he'd noticed it off-camera and thought that they might like to get the chance to show it since they wouldn't be returning.
Amol Rajan wastes time by repeating every correct answer. Yet for the answer to one of the questions -- "2d Vienna School" -- he neglected to say the correct answer after both teams got it wrong (they said "Vienna School" and "Berlin"). He shouldn't r needlessly repeat every correct answer and save it for the ones the contestants get wrong.
@@grimftl Yeah but are the hyperbolic functions thought of as 'trigonometric', which implies a relation to triangles? There are connections b/t hyp. functions and triangles, both euclidean and hyperbolic, so now I'm not really sure. Thanks!
The presenter is just superb. Calm and collected. The right guy to replace Jeremy Paxman.
I agree. Bunch of whining in the other comment sections. But I have to say that the screen instead of cards is a bad choice.
Harrison is a beast!
See how he goes against a fast buzzer team - you can see he thinks long before giving a slow, heavy downward push on his.

Wow. Harrison was amazing. Thanks.
Second time we had a question where answer was 'mango' and 'fruit in cashew family' was part of the question. Must be Amol's influence!
and second time he quips about how great they are
Living in Brazil, a bonus question I can answer!! Lol
Strong showing from Emmanuel. What a beatdown.

A nice way to reinforce the fact that mangoes are in the cashew family for the non-botanists out there 😋
