- Narrowing is a core concept in the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods and one that may be a bit abstract when first coming to the method. So, we had Juliu give us the most basic explanation. According to him, it’s elongation and extension and you must experience it to really understand it.

I’m a yoga teacher, and one of my students mentioned Gyrotonic in class today, saying she thought I’d make a great teacher. Naturally, I had to do some research, and I’m so grateful for this interview!
I first came to yoga through kundalini (though I now teach vinyasa). I experienced something akin to a kundalini awakening and honestly thought I was going to be institutionalized-it was a terrifying experience without a master teacher present. Thankfully, I had enough of a spiritual background to ground myself. However, that experience made me hesitant to teach kundalini, as I believe it SHOULD require the consistent presence of a master teacher to guide students safely through the intense energy that can arise.
Hearing about a safer practice like Gyrotonic and listening to Juliu’s explanation is incredibly inspiring. Thank you for sharing this!
So wonderful to hear more clarity on narrowing! Thank you for sharing this! Time to practice!
Makes so much sense. Is that because I dance? Maybe, maybe not. Imagery can help those who aren’t dancers and if you practice meditation, that helps visualize and feel the nuances, of the breathing/ movement.
This is incredibly helpful. Thanks for posting! 🌀
I wonder why there are yoga studios and Pilates studios all over the world and you never see a Gyrotonic studio anywhere? You can ask Pilates instructors who have been teaching for 30 years and they have never heard of it.
There are Gyrotonic studios. Infact I work at one. But I feel like it may not be as known because it is much more contained practice method within the legal licensing. Alot of people are teaching Yoga and Pilates without being masters at it, and the machines in pilates haven't been patented the same way Gyrotonic has done. So there is alot more access to counterfeit machinery allowing for more people to find and get into those practices. Yoga just a mat.
But Gyrotonic you cannot get counterfeit machinery, price is more expensive and technique acquisition also takes aloooot longer.
I find that many people have difficulty understanding how important it is to experience the techniques with awareness of the nuanced details and become successfu in their own bodies quickly.
With the other 2 techniques aren't as detailed and focused on, also the enforcement of their techniques is rather lax. So people may find it easier to just get in and move with those practices because their is less mental work on their part to feel like they "achieved" something.
That's just why I think it's not everywhere, it also takes the average person 5-10 years to truly get the technique if they had never even been a dancer before.
