    Thanks for the video. 'Clockwise' means the way a clock hand moves . . . to the right. Counter-clockwise is to the left. Must be because the Scots drive on the wrong side of the road!

    Thank you so much for this video…just installed it in my 2023 ID.4 Pro. Like others have commented, removing the first cover was the most challenging as the pins are in a different configuration than the ones in the video. In the process I nicked it up pretty badly ( I used a thin butter knife to prey it off) and knew that was going to really bug me. Before I replaced the trim pieces I used a nail file and nail buffer to smooth out the nicks. I would not have attempted this without your video. Thanks again!

    It took me longer to program the garage doors than to install the mirror. It is a vast improvement and installed easily with no tools in a few minutes. I had three rolling code garage doors so had to press a button on the door unit and then the remote. There are instructions online from Homelink for all the various combinations of installations. Nice work! Thank you for posting.

Luckily I saw your video before the part came in so I got a refund and found the same mirror online from another VW parts dealer for $195 shipped! Installed in 10 mins. So easy! Hi, I just installed it watching your video a few times you are a very skillful person as far as it comes to mechanics and if you got tools for iPhones to take apart, you definitely are very skillful. I was able to do it, but it took me one hour, trying to get the first plastic piece piece off Was rough it didn’t come off easy and then finally the two plastic parts came off at the same time. OK no big deal just take it apart and unsnap them both the second part was putting that mirror in the alignment so it stays up that was torture, but I did it, so it was pretty successful. Thanks to you I commend you on your skills.

    FYI to others looking for this part within the VW network... They are very very backordered according to multiple dealerships and part suppliers. My original order was canceled due to serious backorder with no delivery date. I got one by calling around until someone was willing to tell me which dealership had one in stock. Then I called the dealership and they mailed it to me. As of Jan 2022, there were at least 100 orders waiting to be filled in the VW parts network with a bunch of dealers waiting on theirs as well.

    This was very helpful, thanks. I was originally going to buy a separate homelink and install it somewhere in the headliner but this is much much better. Now if only I can fit Brembos on it. I don't use regen. It would be nice if I can install a steering wheel paddle to engage regen on/off...

    • @kiltedtexan
      @kiltedtexan  2 года назад

      That would be a neat trick. There may be a way to trigger that through software. Essentially the paddle would just be a momentary switch set to trigger between ‘D’ and ‘B’ modes. Interesting concept. Don’t know if Brembos would work. There would be a lot of drill and tapping to place a few sensors in this calipers and rotors. Glad you liked it.

    Have a 2023 Pro S AWD and we assumed it had the home link feature when we purchased..... Any way the home link mirror cost under $200 (from a dealership in Oklahoma City). The biggest issue with the installation was getting the first cover plate off. Don't know if the 2023 cover plate has a reinforced clip but I had to use two pieces of thin stainless - pry the plastic apart enough to get them in about a quarter inch, then use a long flat screwdriver between the two pieces of metal and twist to get each side off - I would have totally deformed the plastic edges had I not used this method. I noticed that when you took the piece off you only had to pry one side and the other came off without prying.
    Thanks for posting your video - I would not have attempted the installation had I not seen you do it first.

    • @kiltedtexan
      @kiltedtexan  Год назад

      I'm glad you found it useful. Although my 2023 did come with a Homelink mirror, I did have to drop the mirror to get my dashcam tucked away like I wanted. That being said, I did notice that the cover plate was a little more stubborn on my 2023. I had to use my trim tool on both sides. Maybe a manufacturing difference on the 2023.

    • @kiltedtexan
      @kiltedtexan  Год назад

      Unfortunately, I already installed a VIOFO camera into my ID.4. The beauty of the FitcamX is that you don't have to run external power (on a single camera setup) since it just runs off the mirror power. I run dual cameras in my ID.4, one internal and one external. This requires you to run external power to the camera (both FitcamX and VIOFO). Since I was already familiar with this process on the VIOFO, I went that route for the VW. I am probably going to install the FitCamX in my Audi eTron though. I won't need an internal camera on that vehicle so I think it is ideal for it. Thanks for the suggestion! Have a great day.

    Slightly different topic, but I was wondering if you have had any experience with the lane keep assist that made you want to turn it off permanently (i.e. so it does not re-enable itself at the next startup)? I know that by taping over the camera on the windshield it does not result in an error message on the screen. So, I was thinking that I could simply unplug the camera and that would be that. I liked your video showing the steps you took to get the installation done. It's actually a better design on the ID.4 than the Passat (I have). I just don't have the pry tools to attempt it and have some hesitancy to try it since it is a new car.

    • @kiltedtexan
      @kiltedtexan  2 года назад

      I completely get your hesitation. I once did a new head unit in a brand new Chrysler 300C I had. I used a butter knife to open the trim panels. I really thing the same thing could be used to get into that seam and remove the trim around the mirror. I don't want to tell you there is NO risk to the panel, but the plastic seems to be pretty resilient.
      As far as the lane keep, I haven't noticed it being too intrusive. I just completed an 1900 mile road trip from San Antonio, TX area to Nashville, TN. I used the travel assist the whole way and I found it made things way easier. If you disconnect the camera and or tape it over you would also lose your adaptive cruise control. I'll be honest, I think 80 percent of the decision for me to buy the ID4 was based on the assistive driving features.

    • @ksorsomeplace
      @ksorsomeplace 2 года назад

      @@kiltedtexan Appreciate the reply. I was just out yesterday and every time I left the lane keep on it operated the steering wheel when it should not at least once. It has trouble in city road construction zones and when you move over to avoid an obstacle in the lane and when steering into left or right turn lanes (typically a signal is not required to do this). In one instance the AEB came on with an audible warning when for a brief moment I was driving straight on a curve that has a v-shaped median (you can continue right or left), but the AEB system thought I was going to go and crash into the median. It can't accurately distinguish all road situations. That's why, especially, in town I want it to stay off permanently and not reactivate each time I start the car.

    Thanks for the intro. I don't really care about the homelink. But is this one really frameless? And is the standard mirror a framed one?

    • @kiltedtexan
      @kiltedtexan  2 года назад

      The standard mirror has a very noticeable edge around the glass where the HomeLink mirror has only a millimeter or two of rim surrounding the viewing surface. Also the HomeLink mirror is a slightly different shape. It is like an inverted trapezoid. It is also larger. My view in the mirror seems to be substantially better.

      @@kiltedtexan thank you sir. I actually prefer to have a separate remote that I can take in home. I do not want people who break into the vehicle can also open the garage door. But I do want an edgeless mirror. Is there a way to deactivate the home link from settings or somewhere?

      @City_hunter the nice thing about this installation is that the homelink buttons do not work unless the car is in a ready state (I.e.: turned on/running). If someone broke in and hit the button, it would not operate the door. It is different that the homelink setups in my Excursion and my Cadillac which operate independently of the key.
