A Look At The Meike 6-11mm Fisheye Zoom

- No-one could accuse the Meike 6-11mm Fisheye Zoom of being conventional, either in function or looks. A focus ring that reads Near~Far rather distances, anyone?
It's a specialized lens as are all extreme focal length Micro Four Thirds lenses, whether 6mm or 300mm. Could you find a use for it?

David - your videos are always a must-see - it's criminal that you don't have 100k subs!
Thanks - I'm probably working in too specialist an area for 100k but it'd be nice.
"For people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they will like"
LOL
:-)
@@DavidThorpeMFT That remark made my brain zoom in and out and in
A zooming brain sounds nice. Does it trombone or is it internal zooming :-)
@@DavidThorpeMFT I heard it works even better with a cold
For people who like David Thorpe, this is the sort of David Thorpe they will like.
:-)
The best pre Christmas present yet. Thank you David.
Thanks you, Michael!
If I hadn't already got the Panasonic 7-14mm F4, I'd be ordering one of these right now. I LOVE ultra-wide lenses!
Now there's a man who knows his own mind - I knew this would really appeal to some photographers!
I am gambling this is the final of 2018 but if Kempton is anything to go by, an Olympian ring at your door delivering the latest and may be greatest M4/3 offering yet for 2019 is with you. If not thank you for all your videos and long may they continue. Happy new year.
Happy New Year, Michael! I don't know anything about an Olympian offering but we shall see!
I didn't know he was a mad magazine fan! I have over 100 mad mags and books. Too late to discuss now, though. :-(
Another good video. I like the Meike lenses.
:-)
I just tested this lens, it's really odd. I came away with the feeling that Olympus or Panasonic would never release something like this because of all of it's quirks, yet I find I like it. The hood gets into the image for a third of it's zoom range, and the focus only says near-far because it changes drastically with focal length. That said, I found this lens has some wonderful abilities that others don't. Close focusing at 6mm is really, really close, as in less than 1cm from the subject. Add to that the depth of field at f8 and it becomes an almost macro lens with the flat field of a funhouse mirror.
One of the things I love about your reviews is that they often come back to the size of the camera outfit, and the idea of the perfect kit. I often travel with the Meike 6.5mm circular fisheye and the Rokinon 7.5mm fisheye, and sometimes the Rokinon 8mm fisheye, which is massive. I was looking for one lens to replace all my other fisheye lenses, and after using it for two weeks, I'm still not sure if this does the job...
My conclusion on this lens (along with the Meike 85mm macro) is that it doesn't fit with the Micro Four Thirds system because they're just too heavy compared to other lenses that do the same thing. I can't see riding my bike somewhere with that lens on my back, but I could see going to the botanical gardens with both of those lenses and a really sturdy (heavy) tripod.
As always, thanks for the review. Your style is a welcome change in a world of in-your-face you RUclipsrs.
Thanks Ed ! Odd, absolutely but it will fill the bill for some. Your conclusions sum up the conundrum with lenses of this type. Overall, I like Meike because they give us more choices, as you say ones that Olympus and Panasonic would never do. And if anyone doesn't like them, they don't need to buy one.
Your wonderfully laconic drift took me wandering, again...into The 360^ Mirror World of the Amazing Jan Van Eyck oil on Oak..picture of Giovanni Arnolfini & his Missus..c. 1434....And I thought would our Jean Van E..have done with a Fisheye lensed camera..? But goodness, just look what he did with his bare hands..Arnolfini picture is in our National Gallery..Free to view..worth the Trip ! As is Velasquez’ pix..he’s my real hero..Same gallery.
Brilliant how your vids provoke. Thank you very much.
I follow a Stanley Unwinesque boffin, an Engineering Genius here on RUclips, called AvE..Who mesmerises, as you do..Just talking about simple but complex issues..Cheers !
Thanks so much, Verdi! I must take a look at Ave.
Pretty interesting but mad lens. It's heavy negating a major benefit of m43 yet is versatile for people who love it.
Yes, not a carry everywhere lens! Quite specialist, as you say.
Interesting, what does it cost?
It wasn't priced when I got mine - it's about £229 on Amazon amzn.to/2Sd7Aan
How can you really have 180 degree angle circular view with a hood?
You can't! I didn't even try.
I didn't know the hood was removable. Glad to see it is. A very odd lens.
Its size makes it unsuited for mft. Too bad, because the focal range is interesting. The meike 6mm for circular fisheye and the samyang 7,5mm for diagonal fisheye remain better choices.
Given the size, you'd want to know that you were going to use it before putting it in the camera bag.
👍😃
I though the railings on 2:38 were bent by the lens.. >_< ) but as always your reviews are pleasing..
I didn't spot that - too familiar with the location!
Do you have it for sale?
Afraid not, Pawel.
@@DavidThorpeMFT Nevermind. I tested it and returned. It squeezes image on edges too much. I recently found out that the only fisheye lenses that are usable for me are Samyang's stereographic 2.8 fisheyes. I gave generic 7.5mm 2.8 APS-C model with MFT mount and it must be enough.
So it's not really a MFT lens....it's an ASP-C lens with a MFT mount....
That's right. It's not ideal but it's better to have it for Micro Four Thirds than not.
That is an odd one!
Sure is!
Just buy a 6.5mm and crop as needed
You have a good point there, Bob.
The cutting off at the top and bottom of the fisheye is still a deal breaker for me. I'd rather pay more and be happy with my photos.
Perfectly understandable - but the Meike is still nice for those photographers who don't have or don't want to spend the money for an uncropped fisheye.
A short video!
And all the better for it? :-)
I try to use it with sony a7lll, it was bad experiment. I don’t know , who like this lens? It’s bull shit👹
My channel is for Micro Four Thirds only.
